Tomorrow, the Senate will introduce a no confidence resolution on the management and credibility of embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Rarely used throughout American history, the resolution, if passed, would be a “historical black mark” on Gonzales and the Bush administration.
On Fox News Sunday today, White House spokesperson Tony Snow said that if the no confidence vote is passed — even with bipartisan support — it will have “no effect” on President Bush’s confidence in Gonzales. Snow claimed “nobody [has] found anything untoward in terms of what happened” in the attorney scandal. He added, “there’s an attempt to pull this [resolution] like a piece of taffy, seeing if there’s any political advantage in it.” Watch it:
The only people twisting the resolution “like a piece of taffy” are those conservatives trying to provide political cover for Gonzales’ incompetent management at the Justice Department.
Roll Call reported last week that Senate conservatives are trying to “thwart” the resolution using parliamentary procedures:
Republicans are likely to tie up the Senate floor with all kinds of procedural mischief and introduce any number of amendments, including perhaps one on whether the Iraq War is actually “lost” as Reid has suggested.
One example: Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), who has previously called for Gonzales to resign but refuses to support the no confidence vote, will introduce an unrelated pet amendment, “expressing ‘no confidence’ in Congress’ ability to cut wasteful spending or balance the budget.”
Transcript:
WALLACE: By the way, real quickly, on the vote of no confidence on Gonzales, if you get a number of Republicans joining in a vote of no confidence, will that shake the President’s determination to keep Gonzales on the job? >>
SNOW: Not a bit. Purely symbolic vote.
WALLACE: And no effect on the President.
SNOW: No. what you’ve got here is a senate that’s had a great deal of difficulty delivering on any of its promises. Furthermore, it is perfectly obvious that the President has the right to hire and fire people who serve at his pleasure. Nobody found anything untoward in terms of what happened. Therefore, as a consequence, there’s an attempt to pull this thing like a piece of taffy, seeing if there’s any political advantage in it. There’s not. So what we’ll end up having is people burning off a day expressing their opinions and then we’ll have an opportunity to move on.
Nothing has any effect on someone who is insane. Bush is insane.
Q.E.D. This Congressional censure with a "no-confidence" vote will have no effect on Bush.
Tony Snow is probably right, but so what?
Keep on pushin'... Eventually this illegitimate complicit regime will collapse.
June 10th, 2007 at 4:42 pmWorthless piece of legislation from a worthless Congress, that has shrugged off their constitutional duty to check the Executive branch.
June 10th, 2007 at 4:42 pmThis shows the complete and utter lack of character or integrity, let alone commitment to the good of this country and what it is founded on, by Bush or Gonzales in ignoring this vote of "No Confidence". By both of these men ignoring Congress and the rest of this country who are trying to protect our system of government and justice so that people in this country won't lose faith shows just how low these men are. They do not stand for America. They are not fulfilling their sworn duties to uphold and protect our constitution and our democracy. They are protecting themselves and all the shady dealings they are pulling that go against what this country wants. They are criminals with too much power. They need to be impeached, charged, and tried as criminals (along with Cheney).

Who gives a damn if you actually think Gonzo should be gone and isn't worthy of the job he holds, but ohhhh noo heaven forbid we actually hold the man accountable by voting no confidence and suffer from the wrath of Rove. Gawd...how effin pathetic...These tools don't need Bush to make a mockery out of Congress or make themselves irrelevant with signing statements. No obviously they are quite capable of doing it just fine on their own. What a waste of a branch of gov't, just another bunch of useful idiots of kkKarl's and apparently damn proud of it. Fascism is alive and kickin in the halls of Congress. Here's to another Bush flunkey...who continues to fulfill Bush's soft bigotry of low expectations legacy...heckuva job.
June 10th, 2007 at 5:26 pmOff subject for just one post: I purchased a 6pack of Buckler non-alcoholic beer, yesterday, like what Pres. Bush supposedly drank in Germany. I have a set of beer glasses exactly like the one Bush drank out of too. So today I poured the beer sloppy into the glass like Bush did in one pic and it produced a thick foam top. The beer is a very pale yellow-amber color and has a very good taste for a 0.5% alcohol beer.
If you compare the glass of beer I have to the one Bush is drinking in the press pics of him, in Germany, they are NOT the same. The beer Bush is drinking has a amber-brown coloring and dirty foam head. Buckler has a snow white foam head and the color is more yellow than brown.
Most average regular beers in Germany have the amber-brown coloring, so my belief is that the Buckler beer bottle was put on Bush's table as a prop and he was drinking regular alcoholic beer. Therefore that is why he acted tipsy in the pics and had a hangover the next day.
I wish the American corporate press would do their job, so bloggers like me would not have to do the investigations of Bush's actions.

The US has different standards which beer need to meet, so even if it is the same brand, imported beer is often different. I don't know if this applies to to non-alc. but I would assume so, because it is still brewed.

(hint: the 'public' became 'consumers,' 'good' gave way to 'greed' and the 'constitution' got outsourced in the interests of the 'company' that now runs our government.)

Drinking the heavy alcohol content beer, in Germany, can make you sick to your stomach the next morning, just as Bush claimed he felt sick. When I went to the Hofbrau house in Munich, Germany, I drank too much and the next morning I did not feel well. The beer ferments in your belly from all the German yeast in it.

I don't even know where to start; your comments about beer are so utterly and totally wrong that I am speechless.
Well, not speechless. Not on the subject of beer.
Wrong. Most "average" beers served in Germany are pils and are nothing at all like "amber" or "brown". Gold, yes, but not very dark except when compared to, say, Coors. I'm not going to argue with you about the photo of Bush, because it's clearly a matter of perception.
"Regular" beer in Germany is not much different in alcohol content than US beer, between 4-6% abv. There are stronger beers, of course, like bocks and doppelbocks, but those exist in the US as well.
If you drink too much, it's quite possible not to feel well the next day; it's happened to the best of us. There is no "German yeast" in the beer, because it has been lagered and filtered. The only time this would be a possibility was if you were drinking unfiltered pils (not in the Hofbrau Haus) or if you were drinking hefeweizen. Yeast is a great source of Vitamin B, but it can make you a bit gassy.
I know you're hot to convict Bush as a sneaking lush, but you're barking up the wrong tree in your beer "research."

If you want to take this offline, I'd be happy to give you my q.v. on the subject of beer. I've been brewing for more than 20 years, and have made my living selling equipment and brewing supplies for homebrewers and commercial breweries alike.
You know far less than you seem to think about beer and brewing and everyone of your comments reveals this.
June 10th, 2007 at 6:42 pmYeast is used in the brewing of beer, and most of it is removed strained out before bottling, but its residue remains in the beer, more so in the dark brews.
My first post about this on this thread refers to NON-alcoholic Buckler beer versus regular beer. I compared my glass of Buckler beer to the pics of Bush drinking one. They do NOT look the same, but somebody can claim otherwise.

i gotta argue that point with ya, TP…
i can’t help thinking that it’s ALL a very deliberate and
purposeful management, and not just of the justice dept…
the whole bushco plan is unconstitutional, even criminal…
but i doubt it’s incompetent…

thank you, Katy. Exactly what I was thinking. Please put to bed the thinking that these people are stupid or incompetent. They know exactly what they are doing and nobody is stopping them. Only impeachment will put a wrench in their plans. Now, not later.
How many paid Rovebot posts can you count today? I am so sick of this schtick. It's really stupid, really boring, and not at all effective. Go away.

Lets hope TP will posts the entire rosters' vote in a plain and simple format so ALL will take note of their share of this problem. If your rep stiffs you with his/hers vote, you better be heard.

The only real way to get Gonzalez out would be through impeachment. Rumsfeld was ousted only after years of negative news articles, generals complaining, and a 2006 midterm-loss. The President likes his good friend, doesn't want to see him unemployed.

No, he's correct. There's nothing wrong with selecting something made in America.
June 10th, 2007 at 7:12 pmGonzo speaks tomorrow at the Miami International Nuclear Terrorism Law Enforcement Conference, the purpose of which "is to enhance cooperation between nations participating in the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism." (GICNUT?)
To feel not so powerless, I suggest messaging local and international media and the Federal Business Council via their websites, to remind them that Gonzales doesn't legitimately speak for the American people.
June 10th, 2007 at 7:13 pmZooey > having a discussion and picking a fight are two different things. Me and Mr. President were bantering about whether Bush drank real Buckler non-alcoholic beer or not. We were not trying to discuss how beer is made, nor if it's light pils, lager, or bock. I wish gummitch well in his beer equipment trade. Home brewing is being done alot in the US now. I am more into wine now and hope to bottle some of my own this summer.

June 10th, 2007 at 7:20 pmApplesolutely America.
June 10th, 2007 at 7:21 pmThe president cannot let Gonzalez go, because Gonzalez is key to preventing the judiciary from prosecuting the president's corrept colleagues. Gonzalez will never resign, he must be impeached and removed. Unfortunately some of those who would be called upon to impeach him would be those who might be investigated for corruption when Gonzalez leaves.
June 10th, 2007 at 7:21 pmA vote of no confidence won't have any impact on Bush, but the rest of the world will at least see that the people's representatives repudiate the actions of their Attorney General. That means something.
June 10th, 2007 at 7:23 pmNot much, but better than nothing.
Could be a first step toward aligning for impeachment of AG, VP and chymp.
Mr. President, I suppose, has. Heck, he's gotta come back. I'm not creative enough to do his dirty work.
(FREE PARIS! Alberto Gonzalez should do the first right think in his legal career and grant Paris a reprieve!)
June 10th, 2007 at 7:26 pmEverybody who posts on TP are good, wholesome intelligent adults with a grand lists of accomplishment. All of you should be proud of yourselves.
June 10th, 2007 at 7:37 pmHis daily confessions must give him a great deal of confidance, because he looks more at ease in his libelist nooze conferences. Will his place in Hell be right behind Shrub or Cowardly Cheney?
June 10th, 2007 at 7:42 pmDid anyone actually expect a "no confidence vote" by a "little-do Congress" to have ANY impact on a "no confidence president"?? It's a "no briainer" to me.
June 10th, 2007 at 7:50 pmAhem.
June 10th, 2007 at 7:50 pmIf what the people and congress express WOULD have any impact on this lameduck president, then I'd really be thinking that he had a true "epiphany" which is highly unlikely in his lifetime.
June 10th, 2007 at 7:51 pm"The 110th back-down Congress."
June 10th, 2007 at 7:52 pmIt's a group of know nothings doing more of nothing to express that they have no confidence in one of the highest offices in this country. That said, what the hell does it mean? Where are it's teeth?
June 10th, 2007 at 7:52 pm#111 Bush's Gonzo "mantra" is this: What webs we weave when our intention is to deceive"....just imagine how many legal scrapes and hideous things Gonzo knows about Bush and has gotten his sorry butt out of over the years? (shuddering as I type because the devil whom we know is bad enough....but the younger devil whom we don't know HAD to have been much more heinous)....
June 10th, 2007 at 7:54 pmIt's certain that if there really is a "hell", Bush and Gonzo will be down there for a very long time.
June 10th, 2007 at 7:55 pmBush will hear the No Confidence Vote and utter his infamous words immediately following it: "Now watch this drive!"
June 10th, 2007 at 7:55 pmHEYOOO!
June 10th, 2007 at 8:09 pmMy husband just called from Colorado airport where he said they announced they just raised the alert to "orange". What's that about? I haven't seen anything in the press. Suppose they will come up with another major terrorist plot that will take over all the wire services and TV news stories in order to overpower or play down any press concerning the vote on Gonzales tomorrow? Isn't that the way it usually plays out? About the same time something goes bad, they suddenly pop up with another mojor terrorist plot??

Good night, everybody.
June 10th, 2007 at 8:18 pmJG > Bush Regime wants lots of diversions tomorrow in the press. Paris Hilton thing cannot divert enough attention away from Gonzales vote.
June 10th, 2007 at 8:22 pmI thought the Attorney General was to serve the citizens of the USA, not George Bush. So what's this crap about serving at the pleasure of the president?
June 10th, 2007 at 9:08 pmThere is one thing the chymp could certainly do with the vote of no confidence.
June 10th, 2007 at 9:35 pmTwist in into a long thin cylinder and shove it up his ... you get the idea.
If I were in the Congress, I'd sure be reminding my Republican colleagues that Bush and Gonzales will not be in office forever and when they are replaced, as they inevitably will be, the damage that will be done to the Republican "brand" when an independent AG actually investigates the shennanigans of Gonzales and Co., will be far, far greater in 18 mos. than any damage that may accrue NOW. There best strategy is to cut their losses and the sooner the better. They may win the battle in the short term, but if they're banking on the American people forgetting the current AG's unlawful activities after the 2008 elections, they're sorely mistaken. HOLD. FEET. TO. FIRE!!!
June 10th, 2007 at 9:42 pmI thought the Attorney General was to serve the citizens of the USA, not George Bush. So what’s this crap about serving at the pleasure of the president?
Comment by hope — June 10, 2007 @ 9:08 pm
Exactly.
June 10th, 2007 at 9:43 pmBush and Co have corrupted the job description, and have since tried to convince us that the AG serves the president.
The AG serves AT the pleasure of the president, but still is tasked with serving JUSTICE.
Alberto Gonzales has been Bush's personal slate wiper for many many years now, and has simply continued to fulfill that same role.
If the White House and Republicans weren't worried about a vote of no-confidence on Gonzales, they wouldn't be working so hard at trying to prevent it. The fact of the matter is that Senate Republicans up for re-election next year will be put on record as either supporting or opposing Gonzales. For those, like Sen. Coleman (R-MN), who already said publicly that Gonzales should resign, they'll have a tough time explaining to voters how they still have confidence in him. They don't want to have to vote on it. Binding or not, it puts the matter back in the public eye and points out that Gonzales should be gone by now and would be if Bush, the least liked president in history, weren't standing in the way. Impeachment becomes more palatable to the general public every day.
June 10th, 2007 at 10:57 pmI thought GW only listened to Billy Graham, directly to God, Uncle Dick Cheney, his mama, and Karl Rove.
Of course God has been giving mesasges of no confidence for some time now. Get the rest to speak no confidence and maybe he'll listen....but I doubt it.
June 10th, 2007 at 11:49 pmFunny thing is that this scandal hasn't really opened up yet.
When it does break, you will find more corruption in the Justice department regarding elections and election cycles that there are drag dealers in prison.
This story is HUGE! and it will ALLLLLLLL come out.
June 10th, 2007 at 11:52 pm...or drug dealers either.
Sorry, bit tired. goodnight.

June 11th, 2007 at 12:25 amI'm a bit confused. Given that the US Congress does not follow European style parliamentary system, what good is a vote of no confidence, really, besides political grandstanding?
June 11th, 2007 at 12:25 amYou people need to take a deepppp breath.

June 11th, 2007 at 1:03 amwhat happened to the beer debate?
June 11th, 2007 at 1:25 amWould that the US were more like Britain's (or any other) parliamentary system in which a "no confidence" vote can be held against the Prime Minister and bring down the whole government. The real beauty is that a "no confidence" motion can be brought against the Prime Minister for virtually any reason, even if the PM himself--or herself--is not the direct reason. Of course, the parliamentary system "no confidence" motions are most likely to take place only if the Loyal Opposition is strong enough to pull enough of the PM's MPs on their side.

June 11th, 2007 at 6:43 amNow I am really getting pissed off at my neighbors and fellow workers who voted republican in 2000 and 2004!
It was obvious to all of those who voted for Gore and Kerry the Dubya was and is an idiot. Those who voted for ass-wipe Bush are bringing us all down.
This idiot must be removed from office.
June 11th, 2007 at 7:47 amwhy hasn't anyone posted bush's complete comment about how the vote will not have any bearing on how he runs "his government" - that line was absolutely infuriating!!!!!!!!!
June 11th, 2007 at 7:52 amBush doesn't listen to anything these days. Can't we just impeach him and Cheney before they do any more damage?

June 11th, 2007 at 9:32 amBush's rebuffing of the no-confidence vote will do him in.
June 11th, 2007 at 9:35 amA no confidence vote if passed is meaningless to an administration who considers the Constitution and Bill of Rights as non-binding.
June 11th, 2007 at 11:28 amYeah and remniscient of the "decider" comments he again proudly declares that it's his government and he has both the right and the authority to overrule any futile adherence to a democracy.
My God. We're not talking about the worst president in History. In many ways we are talking about the survival of our system of government.
Of course whenever one takes the president to task on the decisions he has made regarding Iraq, Katrina, etc. we hear Snow hollering the "blame game" lines.

This is what happens in a world where the intellect rules supreme.
It seems to me that there is no room for intelligence or awareness of any form now. Is Bush's attitude a manifestation of all that is wrong with the world? He really is a bit dark. Kinda Shadow like...isn't he?
