Whatever one thinks of Senator Lieberman’s statements on Iran, implying as the Drudge Report does, that Senator Lieberman made his proposal based not on his views as a United States Senator but on his relationship to Israel is despicable. …. That picture has no relation, either temporally or substantively, to the statement Senator Lieberman made on CBS’ Face the Nation on Sunday.

But the bottom line is that population control will be something that politicians will have to face in the very near future. You think there is hand wringing about global warming? Wait until the next forward thinking politician (that would have to be Al Gore’s son) comes out promoting population reduction by substantially reducing the birth rate. I would first like to say that I do disagree with my friend Joeseph Lieberman regarding the issue of Iran and Iraq, however, I am deeply concerned about a few of the responses I have read on this forum. I would encourage a few members to take a critical look at the Israeli/Palestinian issues before making remarks that might be slightly offensive for some. One may disagree with Mr. Lieberman about Iran, as I do, but please do not automatically assume he is acting only in the interest of Israel instead of what he personally believes is best for America. Additionally, some members on this forum have articulated that the strong Israel/US relationship may not be such a positive thing. The United States is a longstanding ally of Israel because of shared democratic values and strategic interests including the rejection of terrorism. While myself and others have disagreed with some policies of Israel, it is important to recognize the significance of a strong democracy in the heart of the middle east.

I know most of the fellow posters have positive intentions and goals, and I appreciate what this web site has done as far as allowing important debate on many significant issues of our time. For the past several decades, and especially since the Six-Day War in 1967, the centrepiece of US Middle Eastern policy has been its relationship with Israel. The combination of unwavering support for Israel and the related effort to spread ‘democracy’ throughout the region has inflamed Arab and Islamic opinion and jeopardised not only US security but that of much of the rest of the world. This situation has no equal in American political history.
Why has the US been willing to set aside its own security and that of many of its allies in order to advance the interests of another state?
One might assume that the bond between the two countries was based on shared strategic interests or compelling moral imperatives, but neither explanation can account for the remarkable level of material and diplomatic support that the US provides.
Instead, the thrust of US policy in the region derives almost entirely from domestic politics, and especially the activities of the ‘Israel Lobby’. Other special-interest groups have managed to skew foreign policy, but no lobby has managed to divert it as far from what the national interest would suggest, while simultaneously convincing Americans that US interests and those of the other country – in this case, Israel – are essentially identical.
Since the October War in 1973, Washington has provided Israel with a level of support dwarfing that given to any other state. It has been the largest annual recipient of direct economic and military assistance since 1976, and is the largest recipient in total since World War Two, to the tune of well over $140 billion (in 2004 dollars). Israel receives about $3 billion in direct assistance each year, roughly one-fifth of the foreign aid budget, and worth about $500 a year for every Israeli. This largesse is especially striking since Israel is now a wealthy industrial state with a per capita income roughly equal to that of South Korea or Spain.
U.S. support for Israel has led to such disasters as America’s status as the No. 1 target for Islamic terrorists; and that such an otherwise inexplicable departure from good sense can be accounted for only by the power of “The Lobby†(their capitalization), an overwhelmingly Jewish force abetted by some Christian evangelicals and a gentile neocon collaborator or two, who have hijacked American foreign policy and controlled it for decades.?

Hey Rabbi or whatever the hell you guys call yourselves. Does Israel have the right to attack unarmed U.S. warships like the U.S.S. Liberty and kill American military personnel. Congress does no investigation of this matter in 1967 and Israel never apologizes to the American family members of this ship. Surviving crew members have only recently sued Israel for reparations. Does anyone know of a so-called U.S. ally that commits an act of war such as this and gets away with it???? How come Pollard had such easy access to our country’s secrets? Me thinks other countries don’t have those kind of luxuries with the U.S.

I know most of the fellow posters have positive intentions and goals, and I appreciate what this web site has done as far as allowing important debate on many significant issues of our time. I have read many of these “blogs†for quite a while, but I don’t normally post a response.
We may have dissagreements about the policies of Israel and the middle east, but I would again respectfully encourage every person to be educated, and review the history of the conflicts in the region from a variety of sources.

There is a belief, that many of our leaders are jumping to the conclusion that Iran should be attacked on the flimsiest of evidence.
That being the case, I believe that most of the posters here, are bringing into question where Lieberman’s loyalties really lie, regarding this matter.
I personally can’t believe that attacking Iran is in the best interest of the US, and that we should at LEAST try negotiating with them first. If that fails, then perhaps more aggressive measures need be taken.
War should be the option of last resort, not the first.

When it comes down to it, I’m not sure if war with Iran is even in Israel’s best interest.
From what I gather, the majority of Israeli’s are actually against going in this direction too.
I think that extremists, in both US and Israeli camps are taking this on, as a misguided and EXTREMELY dangerous plan.
