Jim Burroway fact-checks Holsinger’s 1991 report that warns of the “dangers” of “anal eroticism”:

The whole point of Holsinger’s paper is to draw a sharp contrast between gay relationships and heterosexual relationships. But to do so, he he culls his evidence largely from papers which describe injuries from nonconsensual intercourse to denigrate consensual relationships, he describes odd sexual practices that are enjoyed by heterosexual couples to denigrate the minority of gay couples who indulge in those same practices, and he misleads his readers by padding his bibliography with more references to papers explicitly describing injuries experienced by heterosexual men and women to imply that they describe gay men instead.
In other words, to describe gay sexual acts, more often than not he turned to papers which describe injuries sustained through heterosexual activity … Whatever pretensions Holsinger may have had to presenting a scientific argument, this paper does not rise to that level. In fact, Holsinger deployed many of the same tactics other anti-gay extremists use in writing common anti-gay tracts.
Dale Carpenter has more.

Daryll!!!
June 11th, 2007 at 2:11 pmBut Doctor, “taking it and shoving it” is just a figure of seech. No one actually expects you to…
June 11th, 2007 at 2:15 pmSo, the truth does have a bias against the “good” Doctor’s prejudices.

June 11th, 2007 at 2:23 pmI don’t mind having to wait till our mission to the Brazilian beaches this December to “create a seed” as he puts it, but I really want to try some other form of birth control.
After reading a report on how many major American companies are outsourcing good paying American jobs overseas, Holsinger reportedly screamed, “Those damn illegal immigrants!”
June 11th, 2007 at 2:25 pmButt, butt . . . it says in the Bible.
June 11th, 2007 at 2:25 pmBush leaves Europe for trouble back home
YES YES YES YES YES YES ,,,,,,,,, please take his passport away from him
June 11th, 2007 at 2:27 pmBush admits hes gay
“Bush said of Gonzales, a member of his inner circle from Texas.”
June 11th, 2007 at 2:29 pmHolsinger is gross. He finds excuses to research said topics and spend time writing about it.
June 11th, 2007 at 2:30 pmEvery time I finally STOP thinking about the gay sex, TP puts up another Holsinger thread. Oy…..
:-D
June 11th, 2007 at 2:30 pmWow, a Bush nominee lied or used deceptive means in order to further his own personal, discriminatory-filled agenda. I know I’M shocked!
June 11th, 2007 at 2:30 pmTiffany, c’mon over to my place babe.

June 11th, 2007 at 2:39 pmI wonder if Holsinger injured himself when he shoved his head up his. . . . . .

June 11th, 2007 at 2:51 pmYep, I’ve got $1 that says Holsinger is a deeply closeted, self-loathing gay man.
June 11th, 2007 at 2:54 pmHeckuva Job, Holsingerie!
June 11th, 2007 at 2:57 pmNothing like a homosexual thread to test TP servers out. Heh :’)
June 11th, 2007 at 3:01 pmTP bs story again.
June 11th, 2007 at 3:04 pmThey must have a chubby for this guy.
This guy is like a Paris Hilton tabloid story here.
June 11th, 2007 at 3:07 pmDaryll’s Gay-Thread-O-Meter must be out of whack….
June 11th, 2007 at 3:07 pmI truly hope he DOES get a confirmation hearing, where all this dirt can be spread out and have him deny or confirm his sources.
June 11th, 2007 at 3:21 pmThen we can do the nation the courtesy of flushing his nomination into the sewer where it belongs.
Wow this sounds an awful lot like the old “scientific” studies trying to tell us that all black people have inferior intelligence.
That he says something like this isn’t really news. It certainly doesn’t make him special. That anyone important listens to him… Now that’s important.
June 11th, 2007 at 3:27 pmFolks, I know we all like to beat up on Bush appointees, but this guy I happen to know. The report being bandied about was hardly intended by Holsinger to be a “scientific study.” In fact, it was a literature review written for laypersons based on the available literature 20 years ago. Holsinger does not lay out “his position” in the paper. When I asked him about the paper, he readily admitted that a literature review from today would yield very different findings since a good deal more information is available. What is so disappointing on this is that, given Bush’s tendencies to nominate via cronyism, with Holsinger we have a remarkably good recommendation. If only we progressives who consistently decry the religious right’s tendency to focus on one or two hot button issues would not allow ourselves so easily to be drawn into the same trap…..
June 11th, 2007 at 3:33 pmchuck
Point taken. However, has Mr. Holsinger disavowed any of this?
June 11th, 2007 at 3:53 pmMy guess is Holsinger is also a butt-hole buddy of “Focus on the Family” Dobsen and the other wack-jobs in the Uber-right!!
June 11th, 2007 at 4:08 pmChuck,
Are you also saying that Holsinger would be able to keep his strong religious beliefs out of his work as SG? If so, maybe he could show the WH how to do the same!
June 11th, 2007 at 4:11 pmHolsinger does not lay out “his position†in the paper. When I asked him about the paper, he readily admitted that a literature review from today would yield very different findings since a good deal more information is available.
Comment by chuck — June 11, 2007 @ 3:33 pm
What PLC said. Didn’t lay out his position????? He puts his name on something, we have no choice but to consider that his opinion until he says something different. If he thought it important enough to do a paper on, and he thinks times have changed and the data has changed, where’s his ‘corrected’ paper? I’m not saying he still believes that drivel, but he better get his ducks in a row if he’s up for such an important position, or we have no choice but to believe his first reccomendation still stands.
June 11th, 2007 at 4:34 pmI wonder if he himself is gay.
June 11th, 2007 at 5:15 pmJesus Christ!!!!!!!!!
TP who wrote this garbage:
“But to do so, he he culls his evidence largely from papers ”
Feeling a little e… emotional?
Do y… you n… need a t… tissue?
June 11th, 2007 at 5:26 pmchuck,
regardless of how anyone puts the situation, holsinger needs to explain this paper. no matter how many folks come forward talking about his credentials, the fact of the matter is that he manipulated credible studies to demonize gay men.
He needs to explain how he can be trusted to be fair to the lgbt community.
June 11th, 2007 at 6:55 pmWhat’s the problem, here? Doesn’t this guy have to get Senate confirmation for his appointment? He’s not going anywhere, folks.
June 11th, 2007 at 9:31 pmAnother example of the Rovian tactic of throwing out for initial consideration a totally unworthy, and controversial selection to fill his cabinet posts and appointees.
June 12th, 2007 at 9:05 amIn the ensuing furor, the truly sinister candidate is slipped in, and Congress feels obliged to confirm, due to their (warranted) objections to the first offering.
This has happened over and over again in the course of this administration.
