Conservatives May Target Schumer As Retribution For No-Confidence Vote

mcconnell.JPGTo counter the fallout of an Alberto Gonzales no-confidence vote, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has repeatedly said he will bring an alternative resolution to the floor. Today, Roll Call previews what that alternative, targeting Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), may look like:

“He may get a dose of his own medicine,” said Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott (R-Miss.), adding, “Schumer is clearly way out of order. … This isn’t going to be free.”

One Senate Republican source explained that such a resolution would not name Schumer directly, but instead instruct the Senate to vote on whether a Senator who runs a campaign committee should be “using his political capacity to run the show” on an investigation such as the U.S. attorneys scandal. Schumer is the chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

“My sense is, we’re going to let them get cloture, and we’re going to talk about it,” the source said. “We have more dirt to throw at them than they have at us.”

This line of attack — that Schumer has a “conflict of interest” because he is investigating the U.S. attorney scandal while also serving as chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee — was first raised three months ago by Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA). It’s a complete distraction.

Schumer has no conflict of interest. The investigations led by the Senate and House Judiciary Committees are focused exclusively on the Executive Branch and not on Congress. Potential investigations into improper behavior by members of Congress would be conducted by the respective congressional ethics committees, as they should be.

Moreover, for many senators, the resolution is deeply hypocritical. None of those who previously attacked Schumer complained about the apparent “conflict of interest” that was raised in the 1990s, when then-Sen. Alfonse D’Amato (R-NY) was chairman of the Senate Whitewater Committee investigating President Clinton. As ThinkProgress previously noted, during that time, D’Amato was serving as national co-chairman of then-Sen. Bob Dole’s (R-KS) presidential campaign, as well as chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

McConnell is a little smartass that talks with a lithp.

Lott, you already got a taste of your own medicine; want some more?

Schumer can take this heat; no problem. But anything to obfuscate, deny or distract,eh?

McConnell is like the Trolls here. Job #1 is to change the subject, deny wrongdoing, get even or just outright lie.

    Gonzo is going down, baby!

  4. Tom says:

Little Mitchie is well-acquainted with impeachment, no-confidence and other such votes. He was one of the ring-leaders in the Clinton witch-hunt. When he talks about how the Gonzo vote “isn’t going to be free”, he’s right. After all, he wrote the book on retribution.

    What a crock!

  5. linda says:

perhaps the democrats should return the favor. so far, arlen specter has enjoyed political cover and not called out by his colleagues for inserting the provision that bypassed senate confirmation of u.s. attorneys.

maybe now is the time to highlight that particular favor senator specter did for bushco.

I’m beginning to think this “no confidence” vote might have some merit — since the crooked Repukes are trying so hard to thwart it. Hmmmm…..

  7. Krazny says:

I don’t see how the no confidence vote, aside from throwing a bone to democrats could mean anything. Unless Bush is impeached, Gonzalez will stay. Bush won’t replace him. A no confidence vote doesn’t mean much, because congress to the best of my knowledge cannot fire the AG, only the president can.

  8. Ben Dover says:

You know we have them by the short hairs when they continue to resort to 5th grade school yard bullying tactics. Gotta love it. The new Repugnican motto should be “We’d Rather Be Slobs That Grow Up”. Jerks

  9. dogjudge says:

Simple solution if the Republicans go down this road.

The Democrats should scrap the no confidence vote (which is stupid anyhow) and push for impeachment AND criminal charges.

More to the point, I have yet to see anyone in the House or Senate address the issue of all these attorneys who are now in career positions who obviously want to push a political agenda at the DOJ.

  11. Grand Moff Texan says:

Uh … why are they protecting Gonzo? Thanks to him, the actions of the Justice Department are an open joke. We now know that it’s nothing more than Bush’s bunch of thugs. If they investigate someone, it’s because he’s a Democrat. If they don’t investigate someone, it’s because he’s a Republican. Two such case have already been literally laughed out of court on appeal, they were so transparent.

The Dept. of Justice has no credibility and it happened on Gonzo’s watch. So why are the Republicans throwing their little hissy fit? Are they supporting the corruption of Justice?

Good. One more nail in their coffin.

We should exercise care in dredging up the GOP conflicts of interest dating so far back as D’Amato. I realize that they highlight the hypocrisy of these current moves, but they also run the risk of lending some credibility to the breathless “but…but…Clinton did it, too!” arguments with which the trolls plague us daily.

I’m beginning to think this “no confidence” vote might have some merit — since the crooked Repukes are trying so hard to thwart it. Hmmmm…..

Indeed. The smartest thing the Repukes could have done regarding this “no-confidence” vote would have been to simply abstain from voting one way or another, claiming that they refuse to legitimize the “partisan stunt” by participating in it in any capacity. After all, the vote is meaningless in anything but a symbolic sense, and if the Repukes could short-circuit that symbolism by claiming the moral high ground, it would be completely meaningless.

Fortunately, most Repukes aren’t all that bright. The more they vow to sling mud to try to shut the Dems up, the more legitimacy they hand this “no-confidence” vote. The Repukes are remarkably adept at digging themselves deeper and deeper…

  22. DM says:

I think the Democrats ought to jump on board and support it in a bipartisan manner, in an expanded format – not only should no member of any investigation be an officer of any political committee, but no sitting member of Congress should be a member of any political party or be allowed talk to anyone who is. In fact, to preclude the opportunity of being able to let money influence their political decisions, no member of congress should be able to talk to anyone with any money whatsoever.

Yay! It was hard work, but I managed to top their stupid.

And for all the Republicans who say that it’s a political vote and they shouldn’t express their opinion of the AG, will they abstain? Doubtful. They will vote against – showing that they are also political even as they accuse others of being political.

Bottom line is Gonzo is a f*ck up, and none of this would be necessary if the administration had any dignity at all. But because they don’t, it is necessary.

  32. smafdy says:

I agree with Krazny: Impeachment is the only way to go. It’s called “killer instinct” – when your opponent is reeling, you have to finish them off. If they get their second wind, your chances of success decrease. Defensive posturing in the face of a dangerous and disadvantaged enemy does not advance the cause.

The dems need to go nuclear. They also need to police their own and maintain dicipline – individual concerns about reelection need to be addressed and put into context for the rank and file. The leadership must take a parental stance over their own members, as well as those of the minority. God knows they should be treated like children.

Let’s call this what it is: desperation. McConnell and other Republican senators are being lobbied hard by the White House. There are deals being made and they’re being urged to block this thing any way they can. They have to keep Gonzales in there. If he leaves, the only way a new AG is going to get confirmed by the Senate is if it’s someone who is absolutely not going to help the White House cover up its crimes. If that were to happen, it’s over for Rove, it’s over for Cheney, and it’s over for Bush. The end.

Can’t wait to get McConnell’s ugly mug out of the US Senate?

Check out http://www.ditchmitchky.com We’ll be ready for Nov. 2008.

  108. JosephW says:

Leave it to the Brain-Dead (aka RepubliCONS). Gonzales is fair game as the target of a “no-confidence” motion since the man is NOT an elected official. Schumer, on the other hand, IS an elected official and faces his own “no-confidence” motion at the voting booth (in 3 years, if I’m not mistaken).
It was the SENATE which confirmed Gonzales, and it should be the SENATE which now says “We don’t have confidence that you’re able to do your job any longer.”
