Major polluters lobby White House in meetings.

Major polluters lobby White House in meetings.»

“For the second time in a week,” lobbyists for major polluters visited the White House last Friday “in an effort to influence the US EPA’s upcoming proposed standards for smog.” Representatives of the Edison Electric Institute and the American Chemistry Counsel met with White House officials to lobby against tighter smog standards.

Earlier last week, lobbyists for the electric power, oil, automobile, and diesel engine industries met with OMB. Also sitting in on that meeting was a representative of Vice President Dick Cheney, long considered the go-to guy for big industries opposed to tougher environmental standards. … It’s pretty rare for someone with the Vice President to sit in on a meeting like this. It suggests that industry has really sought to elevate this politically.

No surprise here. Can’t Cheney push fu@king up this planet a little faster. He must be getting slow in his old age.

  2. oldtree Says:

I wonder if there is a list of these people so that they can be investigated if we get a government by the people back. see what happens to these oil slicks if the people ever get angry

  3. veritas Says:

And Bush will award them a medal for being “stewards of the environment”…. Orwellian speak.

  5. had enough Says:

recipe to turn this country around:

Lobbying should be illegal. That is a no brainer.

Campaign finance reform should become law, then we could choose our leaders from a larger gene pool other than the rich.

Let’s have a real media not a circus infomercial for the republicans, so all can cast their votes on the facts, not bias and smears.

If this country returned back to We the People, respect for others, morality, justice, everything in the preamble of the constitution would also return.

You’re absolutely correct. Flush the lobbies.

What the hell are those people doing in the White House anyway?

  9. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

What I want to know is did anyone from the administration talk to anyone from any pro-environment groups, or was it just the anti-environmentalists mentioned above?

This is precisely why I believe that the theory that the president should be allowed to keep the advice he gets (advice on public policy mind you) a secret from the public is bullshit. Nothing in the constitution gives the president (and especially the vice president, also known as “the president of vice”) the authority to do this. Nothing. [And if you want to refute that statement, please cite the Article and Section of the constitution that gives him this authority. I’d like to see it for myself, since it wasn’t there the other dozens of times I’ve read the constitution.]

OT: For those who care, I wrote on my blog about a war protest march we had in my home town. All are welcome to come see it. In case I don’t get back tonight, have a good night all.

  10. Toxic China Says:

Fight back. Write and call your reps. Send the article and tell others to send it. We have to keep fighting. We know what is happening. Cheney is a monster, Chimpy, an idiot. The EPA has been dismantled. These parasites are living off the health of future citizens and the average idiot in this country doesn’t at all give a shit. You hear any of the candidates saying, “Perhaps we have to chnage the way we measure economic performance”,,, “Rather than GDP growth, how about smog conditions, the cancer rate, early child developmental disorders, prison and mental health center populations, - these are all benchmarks of a healthy environment so instead of growth by current measurements, let’s grow by our own standards of healthy living…”.

By the time someone gets in to office who says this, it will be the 2030s and it will be too late. The entire planet will be one giant science fiction _cking nightmare - just like China is now.

    Must still fight though…

Well the year 2012 will be rolling around soon and well, it will be a huge catastrophy. I think I’m gonna party liike its 2011 for the next few years.

  12. Devil's Advocate Says:

Easy! Every one of these companies has promised a CEO job for Cheney, along with a fat Golden Parachute, when he is ousted for poor performance.

Cheney, as the head of Haliburton, was so incompetent that he “forgot” to push his people on doing due diligence on a company that Haliburton was acquiring. Guess what? That company had asbestos liabilities up the wazoo… Haliburton was not doing well at all until the scumbag Veep gave them unlimited no-bid contracts for Iraq reconstruction. So far, their performance has been a disgrace.

Meanwhile, Cheney is enjoying his deffered payments from Haliburton and is sitting on options that have gone up 3000% since the beginning of the Iraq misadventure. And counting, since Cheney, in accord with Lieberman, wants to strike Iran…

You know how the “in” words are no longer “in” once adults and/or white people start using them?

I get the feeling the whole “global warming” hype has jumped the shark with Bush and Cheney talking about it.

Good point, muckdog. Every last blasted thing Brush touches turns to shit almost immediately. What better way to give the whole idea of global warming The Kiss of Deathâ„¢ than to have America’s CEOâ„¢ embrace it wholeheartedly?

  15. lieinveigleobfuscate Says:

I have to point out that Clean Air Watch is making assumptions without using ANY sources, which is something we bloggy types usually make fun of the MSM for.

  16. Karim Says:

    These people are shameless.

  17. do your homework Says:

Before you go calling the electric utilities the “major polluters”, you need to remember that WE are the ones using all that energy. WE are the major polluters. Each one of us pulls more and more power every day, with every tivo, blackberry, portable dvd player, ipod, iphone, icar, ihouse, ibrain, that we buy. If you want electric cars, that will use exponentially more electricity.

Running and maintaining power plants is really expensive. If they build brand new power plants, no doubt those plants would be cheaper to run, and more clean. But power plants are about the most expensive thing in the world to build, and they don’t have that kinda money. Do you want to pay for the new plants? I’m sure they’d like some help. Write your representatives and let them know you’re interesting in donating $5 of your tax return to building new electricity infrastructure. Tell them that should be a checkbox option on next year’s tax forms.

We use the power. We need to pay for it.

You know how the “in” words are no longer “in” once adults and/or white people start using them?

Such a stupid racist thing to say, as if words (slang) is even remotely close to new or ‘in’.

  19. chris Says:

I love how everyone negatively criticizes politics, yet they really do not stand up for what they say. Want action??? Stop complaining through blogging, get off your butt and get active with your state and local government. You want change? Become the government, don’t just become another passive wart that watches the world go by.
