Politico Hedges Its Bets, Claims Conservatives Will ‘Back’ And ‘Bolt’ From Giuliani

On May 28, Politico’s senior political writer David Paul Kuhn wrote an article with the headline “Social conservatives bite bullet, back Rudy.” Kuhn’s lead declared the conservative base was increasingly falling for Giuliani because he was perceived as “most electable.”

bullet

In just two weeks time, Politico’s Kuhn turned the story on its head and wrote a piece with exactly the opposite lede. In an article entitled, “Conservatives would bolt over Rudy,” Kuhn declared the conservative base was threatening to take flight from the Republican Party if Giuliani were to win the nomination.

bolt

As a staff writer, Kuhn is not responsible for the headlines on his articles. That’s the job of Politico’s editor, John Harris. Harris famously patted himself on the back for conceiving the inartful and inaccurate characterization of the Democrats’ supposed “slow bleed” Iraq strategy. Harris later explained:

You can understand my pride of authorship. Editors labor in obscurity. Our job is to keep reporters from looking bad, and to let them take the credit when they look good. Rarely is there tangible evidence that we are having any impact. But in 20-plus years in the business, I can scarcely recall an instance when words typed on my keyboard have had such a loud and immediate echo.

Harris need not worry. He is certainly having an impact. Whether Giuliani ends up winning or losing the support of social conservatives, we’ll know one thing for certain: Politico had it nailed…and they had it completely wrong.

Rudy is a land-mine for the GOP, because he is a cross-dresser/drag-queen and ultimately Americans will not vote for somebody like that for president.

Aren’t I such a brilliant political pundit and soothsayer?

  5. Unvarnished Truth says:

Depends. Many of them won’t vote for Rudy in the primary but certainly will support him fully against the corrupt appeaser Hillary Clinton.

  6. TripMaster Monkey says:

Does it really matter who “the American people” will vote for?

Did it matter in 2004? Did it matter in 2000?

Then I guess Hillary is doomed.

Truly a schizoid party now the poor, poor GOP. They are truly a divided house eating their own in a terminal civil war. The Xenophobe troglydytes who have had a staple diet of fear and derision these past seven years are HORRIFIED that ‘darky’s’ illegals ‘be granted amnesty’ While the corporate masters stick a shiv in the base for the corporate agenda. All the while the Christian Taliban writhe.

Truly entertaining to see them eat their own imploding under derision and failed leadership. it is expected they look to an actor, an impressionist again as their Savior. The schizoid flaling is certainly expected.

So, there were no wars under Democratic Presidents? wow, go figure, during my Presidency there was…

Somolia and Kosovo and countless small scrimages around the world.

Well, thanks Tobey Tall, I am glad you are ignorant, you will always be one of our voters.

If you look at USA history, some of its biggest wars happened under Democratic Presidents.

  24. cynicalgirl says:

I don’t give the clowns at Politico 3 months past the election. They lost all credibility months ago with their false reporting and then solidified it after the last debate. That paper is toast.

  25. Rosencrantz says:

I think conservatives do this kind of crap on purpose so that no matter what happens, they can look back and say, “see! We were right! We speak for the American people and therefore have massive credibility.”

Which then leads to the media beleiving the POlitico has credibility and speaks with the people, so they treat the POlitico as a credibile source on all things.

Osama bin Laden attacked the US AFTER Bush was elected. It happened on Spetember 11, 2001.

  33. valiant venus says:

Let me be clear – I LIKE Rudy Guiliani. I think he would be a FAR superior President in the field of National Defense than Hillary, Barack or John Goodhair. (Ostriches like these Dem candidates have a tendency to miss the obvious threat because their collective heads are in the sand.) Should he be the nominee of the Republican Party I will support him.

Unfortunately, many conservatives (myself included) disagree with Rudy’s stance on the intrinsic evil of abortion, support for the the 2nd Amendment, etc. (I am not a Romney supporter because I’m not sure what he stands for……..today.) For this reason, MANY of us enthusiastically support Fred Thompson. (I can envision a Thompson/Clinton debate…..folksey, sure-footed Fred and shrill-Hill…..)

Faiz, as somebody who works with the press on a daily basis, I can tell you from personal experience that only up tight jerk wads use “lede” the rest all use “lead.” Journalists that use “lede” are trying to make themselves sound smart. All it does is make them appear to be nit wits.

Did you read the page that you linked Faiz?

    lede

    noun
the introductory section of a story; “it was an amusing lead-in to a very serious matter” [syn: lead]

Even the dictionary reference page you sent us to uses “lead” in the definition.

Now, feel free to stop using “lede.”

    It’s pretty simple:

    GOP = Bush = War = Death

Any vote for ANY GOP candidate is just more of the same failed policies and Americans dying in a pointless, unnecessary war. They’re all slices from the same loaf of bread. Some just have more mold and some are the heels.

  44. ecoast says:

Lede is an old newspaper slang term for “lead”. When the typeset was done in ead metal, they used to use “lede” to distinguish it from the typeset lead. Our military is crumbling in Iraq. The world hates us–and is beginning to sneer at us. Gas is $3.50 a gallon. Health care prices continue to skyrocket.

The public doesn’t want a daddy. The public wants things fixed. The candidate could look like George Clooney with Vin Diesel’s muscles and James Earl Jones’s speaking voice, and if he’s going to give us four more years of George W. Bush, Dennis Kucinich in a tutu would defeat him.
