Reid Pledges Amendments On Iraq Timeline, Readiness Standards, Feingold Bill
In an interview with ThinkProgress, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said publicly for the first time that an upcoming defense spending bill will include votes on several key Iraq amendments, including a timeline for withdrawing U.S. forces.
The Senate is expected to take up the 2008 defense authorization bill in a matter of weeks. Reid said yesterday that the legislation will have amendments covering a timeline as well as readiness standards for U.S. soldiers sent into combat. He also promised another vote on the Reid-Feingold legislation that removes virtually all U.S. forces from Iraq by April 1, 2008.
Similar provisions were stripped from the emergency war spending bill signed last month by President Bush. But Reid said the new push would be different. “We’re going to focus the defense authorization bill on things that we couldn’t” with the emergency Iraq supplemental, Reid said, “because on the supplemental, the president kind of had us over the barrel, because it was the funding of the troops. He doesn’t have us over the barrel on the defense authorization.” Watch it:

REID: The escalation, of course, is not working. We see that with the death of five more soldiers yesterday in Iraq. We have a report coming out July 15 which will be a help to us. It’s a benchmark, we’ll see what happens with that.
We’re going to take up the defense authorization bill, which will have amendments on it — timelines, readiness. We’re going to focus the defense authorization bill on things that we couldn’t, because on the supplemental, the president kind of had us over the barrel, because it was the funding of the troops. He doesn’t have us over the barrel on the defense authorization. We’re going to set some standards for the defense authorization, starting it on the first day of October of this year.
Of course, we’re going to renew the Reid-Feingold amendment again, saying that there should be a transition of mission and we should be out of there, out of Iraq, on April 1, except for counterterrorism, force protection, training Iraqis.

Here’s a though Harry, revoke the congressional authorization that allows Bush to operate the Iraq Genoci…er…”war”. As I understand it, the authorization can be revoked with a simple majority vote in both houses. Since it is a congressional authorization, it does not require the president’s signature and cannot be vetoed.
I know that there is no bribe money available in that solution, Harry, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t do it.

What is infinitely more interesting than Chimpy’s alleged wristwatch theft is the curious nature of his welcome in Albania. I found this description of the crowd’s adulation here.
Now isn’t that interesting. In this country, the only people allowed to even approach King Chimpy are previously vetted and cleared Bushiveks. Protesters aren’t even allowed near his travel routes.
But in a foreign country, the Secret Service allows crowds of people to touch and grab Chimpy at will, only exerting enough control over the situation to keep the Chimperor upright.
Interesting, isn’t it? It’s even more interesting when you consider that all of Chimpy’s alleged “spontaneous public scenes”, like the infamous “town meetings”, are carefully scripted.
And finally, just some food for thought…the Secret Service who was so unconcerned for the President’s safety during this Albania visit is the same Secret Service who blithely stood by and allowed Chimpy to finish reading “My Pet Goat” after it was known that a) an airliner had just impacted the North Tower, b) three more airliners had been confirmed as being off-course and unresponsive, and c) the itinerary of Chimpy was public knowledge. The Secret Service had (allegedly) no way of knowing that one of those other hijacked airliners wasn’t diving on Booker Elementary at that very moment, but they placidly stood by and exposed the President of the United States to danger…just as they stood by in Albania and allowed complete strangers from a foreign country to manhandle him.
It’s inconceivable that the Secret Service is this incompetent. Only one other explanation presents itself.

It’s a tough lesson and a very depressing one, to say the least but ultimately this new awareness will set one free….free from the continuous manipulation that someone will finally do the right thing…..free from the belief that anyone in Washingto actually cares about the peope. Senator Reid has a ONE vote majority. If you will observe the vote on Gonzales, we have about 54-56 votes in the Senate — NOT enough to override a veto, and not enough to declare cloture.
The defense bill is a standard appropriation with far greater leeway democratically. The 109th didn’t even finish (or attempt) its standard appropriations (too busy mopping up the bloody cash) — so it’s a much more negotiated political context. The minority cannot simply pull a fillibuster on these large bills.
• On the second front, the INDICTMENT front, the Senate and House have just about completed investigations that have revealed indictable acts of major officlals. We may be able to restore justice to the Justice Department, and the effect of that accomplishment would be DEVASTATING for Bushco, and another huge boon to the American people from the Democratic part of the Democratic party (to quote Dean).
ALL gov’ts have to negotiate with monied power and with military factions, and certainly this one does, to the point of nearly losing its democracy in a series of conspiracies (including massive vote fraud).
To pretend it’s possible to simply wave the magic wand and eliminate the opposition is a special psychosis of the Left. You just wave the Constitution in the air, and the powers fall silent. If Harry Reid gave a damn, he could get that declaration to cease hostilities at a date certain onto the Senate floor for a vote [budget reconciliation bill which can’t be filibustered, etc.], pass it, and return sanity and the Constitution to America.
Instead, Harry Reid is busy ordering DEMOCRATS in the Senate to include Republican crap in the Energy Bill before he’ll bring it to the floor, and PLEADING with President Bush to revive the Immigration Bill SO REID CAN BRING THAT BACK BEFORE bringing up the DEFENSE authorization bill (priorities you know).
