“The Army now admits

By Nico on Jun 12th, 2007 at 2:02 pm

“The Army now admits»

that it secretly dumped 64 million pounds of nerve and mustard agents into the sea, along with 400,000 chemical-filled bombs, land mines and rockets and more than 500 tons of radioactive waste - either tossed overboard or packed into the holds of scuttled vessels.”

    Congratulations.

But no matter what, do not do anything other than to rosin up your bow because you cannot make a difference and it’s all the fault of our evil government. Which is a representative government of the people so, by extension, it is the fault of our evil people.

Welcome to the fruits of our apathy.

  27. Jackie Says:

While Americans are worried about another attack and scared of Bin Liden looks like the White House has a plan of it’s own on how to kill Americans.
That’s one way to reduce the Social Security problem, just kill people.
Now Connie Rice made a big deal about Saddam possibly having Mustard gas yet never said a thing about the US having it. Bin Liden was right when he said no one would ever have to attack the US again, looks like he knew the White House plan. Our troops are dying based on lies and now the White House will kill Americans with dirty poison water. The GOP will blame Iran or Al Qaeda for the deaths and yes Americans will believe that lie too.

    Comment by Juan C — June 12, 2007 @ 2:21 pm

Nah, a military can’t be ran by private companies, sort of defeats the purpose. As far as this mess goes it looks like a join Republican/Democrat venture. So glad we were all fighting for those controls on companies in the 70’s and 80’s to improve the environment. Yup slam the companies and have the government doing this.

    Good point Juan

  38. 1970cs Says:

That they kept it secret for years tells they knew what they were doing was wrong. But whats even more incredible is that they dumped it in the areas worked by commercial fisherman and directly in the gulf stream.

  39. Marie Says:

There is little more to say here — we are the world’s worst polluters.
I am beyond disgust, I am beyond anger — it is time for revolution.

  42. Fed the Fcuk Up! Says:

So the tune of choice is definitely “the evil government did it.”

Goodness gracious, how did we fall under the reign of this monstrous and immoral government who is the source of all of our troubles and the root of all of our evils?

Who are these evil people? Where did they come from? Who hired them? Who put them in charge? Who?

  43. Jay Randal Says:

Oh great the Pentagon has poisoned the Atlantic ocean, and said nothing about it till now, so we have eaten contaminated seafood.

  44. Yup Says:

Well, it’s bothersome, but so long as that stuff was only dumped along the Atlantic seaboard, it’s OK by me. Just don’t go messing with the west coast, that’s all I ask. And I’m sure the armed forces never would, ’cause they’re OK, and I should know. I’m a patriot, too.

  45. pissedofliberal Says:

That explains the sea level rise.

The Repubs were right, it’s not global warming! EVIL just pure EVIL people.

  47. Chris Says:

thats why liberals are so whack in that part of the country.

  48. Zooey Says:

This has been going on since at least 1958, according to a picture on the linked article, which shows the SS William Ralston being sunk with 301,000 mustard gas bombs and 1,500 1-ton canisters of Lewsite, off the coast of San Francisco.

  49. pissedofliberal Says:

Yup — it’s not just the East Coast. Cali is affected too along with Hawaii and Western Florida.

  50. Jay Randal Says:

Yup > The Pentagon probably dumped stuff on the West Coast too. Remember scientists have reported a huge dead area off of Northern California and Oregon, so maybe it was caused by radioative waste and chemical bombs being dumped there.

  51. Tom3 Says:

“Just don’t go messing with the west coast, that’s all I ask.”

    Too late.

“for thirty years, a 365 square mile area around the farallon islands (27 miles outside the golden gate) served as the nation’s primary nuclear waste dumping ground… this area is now the farallon islands national marine sanctuary… from 1945 to 1970, when nuclear dumping at sea was prohibited, an estimated 47,500 barrels of radioactive debris from nuclear labs such as lawrence livermore labs were dumped in the area…”

    (from the article cited above)

  52. margaret Says:

In light of this revelation, I’m wondering if global warming is in fact Mother Earth coming down with a bad fever due to the ravenous parasites crawling all over her called humans!

  53. Rocker5150 Says:

Whoever did this should recieve a life sentence for gross endangerment of the planet, if not the death penalty. What do other countries think of such an act? Do they all dump chemicals like phosgene in the sea??

    From the article:

“Hundreds of dolphins washed ashore in Virginia and New Jersey shorelines in 1987 with burns similar to mustard gas exposure. One marine-mammal specialist suspects Army-dumped chemical weapons killed them”

Nice. Probably has an interesting effect on those who eat seafood living in such waters. Maybe a study should be done to see if unusual instances of cancer or other rare conditions can be traced to such crimes.

You guys think this is news? I heard about this way back in high school.

What’s going to be interesting is when seawater finally corrodes through the containers this crap was dumped in, and the resulting release of poisons causes a massive phytoplankton die-off.

Phytoplankton accounts for about 45% of the world’s oxygen production. If a significant percentage of the world’s phytoplankton is suddenly killed off, it’s going to make the wholesale destruction of the world’s rain forests look like an overzealous gardener overpruning an apple tree.

When my family and I were taking a guided tour of Sandy Hook (an old naval base) in NJ–one of the older men in the group mentioned that old ordinance and nuclear materials had been dumped by the military right off the coast. At the time, we took that information with a grain of salt, but I guess it was true.

That must be why we have such a high cancer rate in the NY/NJ area.

  90. Rogera Says:

Now we know why “Oceans no longer protect us”.

  91. NoOneYouKnow Says:

We’re not the only ones. Y’all should hear about what the Russians have dumped in their parts of the oceans. Some nerve gases break down over time. Mustard gas remains dangerous for decades (there are fields in Flanders in which you don’t want to sit), but the nuclear stuff… well, that’ll be around for hundreds of thousands of years, long after we primates are either extinct or, with a lot of luck, evolved into a creature a lot smarter than homo sapiens sapiens.

  92. dbadass Says:

“the solution to pollution is dillution” mentality lives on. As a teacher of oceanography I obviously will be identified as “not highly qualified” under NCLB unless a get onboard and turn my back on what until this administration was called Science. Well better get back to teaching to the test so that “we can be sure are students is learning”. As far as I understand they have been doing it within the confined waters of the Delaware Bay as well. Maybe this has something to do with a certain chemical related family in Delaware? Better go easy on the raw oysters and softshell crabs. Freakin’ douche bags!!

  93. dbadass Says:

  96. freedomrings Says:

Bush didn’t do this by the way. Ocean dumping has been going on since WW1 and nuclear bombs and missiles have been dropped there by mistake. There is no way to clean it up by the way. Yes drums of mustard gas there since WW1.

Don’t worry; Washington State has 1 million gallons of high level nuclear waste that leaked from a WW2 processing plant into their drinking water. Their plan is to gather what is left and cast it into glass and then dump that into the ocean too.

  97. jeffreydj Says:

  111. Aaron Says:

People will always be lazy, will always look for shortcuts, and will always abuse collectively owned property like the oceans. The problem isn’t our government in particular, it’s that we place a lot of power in the hands of a small group of people and the only realistic way we have of regulating them is by voting, hooray. Plus, you don’t even vote for the military, and you have to pay them whether they do a good job or not.

Compare this to private companies, a lot of which are feeling the market pressure to become greener and changing. Yes, corporations can suck, especially when they buy government power in order to screw people over. But the biggest corporation by far is the government, and you control it far less than you think you do with your tiny little vote — that vote really doesn’t change very much, especially since you are forced to pay taxes even if you think the government is doing a terrible job.

All I’m saying is that any private company that did this would find a lot of people boycotting it and lose a lot of money. But how many people are going to stop paying the military to punish them?

  112. k Says:

Does anyone know where I can find more info on this?

  113. ANARCHY-TV.COM Says:

We’ve found the WMDs! They’ve been dumped secretly into the sea to avoid inspectors by… oh wait… *turns finger around and points at US military*

The U.S. military has been doing this crap for a long time. There is a little neighborhood in S.C. where in the 50’s they tossed such crap wholesale out in the backwoods at the end of some dirt road… and 50 years later the neighborhood spawl went right over it. And everyone started dying and getting deathly sick from these nerve agents. They’ve been dumping this junk in the ocean a long time. Not to mention, detonating nukes in the ocean all the time with the resultant radioactive fallout. Where’s it going to go? Where ever the ocean currents take it, which is everywhere.

So you go swimming on the California Coast, or down in Florida, or on the Eastern Seaboard, or take a vacation to the Bermudas. Man, look at that beautiful white sand, and crystal blue water. Now guess what’s in that water that you don’t see. How many parts per million of various toxic or radioactive waste is in that picture pretty water, and how many molecules of nerve agent are you getting in you everytime you (or your kid) accidentally swallow a mouth full of water. How much gets absorbed into the fish you eat, who constantly live in the water, and this stuff accumulates in their cells? The ocean is big… but these are millions of pounds, not thousands.

So that’s one of the reasons for the diminishing supply of fish in the seas around the world.

Think we need to go back in time a bit, then learn who authorized the dumpings (yes, there were several ranking officers). Those bastards should be shot in a public execution.

Reality suggests that our illustrious congress would be entirely too preoccupied with other “major” problems such as flag burning, covering up their own misdeeds, writing earmarks for the favored few, the number and size of their parking places or stalls in the restrooms, etc.

    http://www.davistownmuseum.org/cbm/index.html

This day you are upset by the fact that starting in WW1 our military started dumping chemicals that don’t break down in water like mustard gas.” Well they are talking about attempting to get that stuff up and at the same time intend to cast nuclear waste into glass blocks and dump those into the ocean.

Proof that we and the Earth or running out of game. Some of these wastes have 1/2 lives going to beyond 50,000 years. I will embolden this to make a point…

1,000,000 gallons of liquid nuclear waste leaked into Washington State’s drinking water from Hanford Reservation that started in WW2. Part of the cleanup effort is to cast the remaining wastes at Hanford Reservation into glass blocks and drop them into the ocean.

Does that even remotely sound like the government has a grip on this to you? The one thing I have learned is that people will have to maintain growing amounts of nuclear and chemical wastes for thousands of years to come. There have been numerous careless acts, broken arrows, intentional acts since the dawn of industrialization.

All of this real world chaos and people still can’t agree on abortion, homosexuality, illegal aliens or change the government. Honestly read the link about Hanford Reservation above. 1,000,000 gallons of high level nuclear waste leaked and made it to the drinking water. Do you know what that means? For starters it means cancer, birth defects and death on a wide scale and that is the tip of the iceberg.

They admit that all they can do is convert the remaining waste into glass blocks and dump those into the ocean. The escaped 1,000,000+/- gallons of waste can’t be cleaned or retrieved. The east coast has metric tons of debris, waste and old weapons in aging steel drums… The east coast has broken arrows, 3 mile island and sunken nuclear ships.

What doesn’t have a chemical or nuclear something or another has an oil spill. The next stop I’m afraid to say is…

You Europeans better do something about it too. WW1 was waged over oil as was WW2 and the rest. Industrialization creates dangerous waste.

France has more nuclear waste than it knows what to do with. England has reactors running that should have been decommissioned 10 years ago. Russia has Chernobyl and many other disasters hidden and apparent. Basically all you need are people and oil and combination alone is a disaster on wheels. It isn’t the USA it is everyone.

Although this was over a long period of time and some of the waste itself has decomposed into its harmless component chemicals, it’s pretty astounding what we humans will do without thinking. Even if only, say, 1% of what was dumped is still potentially harmful today (and I submit that there is even MORE waste not admitted to in addition to my made-up 1% figure being way too low), we are putting future generations in unnecessary harm’s way. Even if only one life is taken, was it worth it to be so cheap instead of disposing properly? We are essentially dumping these chemicals on our children and their children and so on. How can people be so uncaring and thoughtless? It’s absolutely astonishing. I can gaurantee you that this still goes on today and is being recorded in top secret documents that future generations will uncover. 50 years from now you’ll hear about all the crazy dumping we did in the early 21st century. It really makes you think why the USA receives so much support from other countries.. Im sure that money and power have nothing to do with it

What source can you site for your claim that these chemicals do in fact decompose into harmless component chemicals and what are those harmless component chemicals? My next question is where did you obtain your percentages like “1% of what was dumped is still potentially harmful today?” My understanding is that, “Bulk MUSTARD can persist for decades in soil or water. When exposed to sea water, mustard forms a thick outer “crust” over a core of mustard which allows the mustard to be brought to the surface where it can injure unsuspecting fishermen who may snare plastic lumps of mustard gas in their nets.
MUSTARD and a number of its hydrolysis products are oxidized (air, oxygen, hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, nitric acid, potassium permanganate, and chromic acid) to give the less toxic sulfoxide and sulfone analogs.
MUSTARD and its hydrolysis products do not significantly degrade in sunlight and are stable at less than 49°C.”

It is also my understanding that, “Cover with vermiculite, diatomaceous earth, clay, or fine sand and neutralized as soon as possible using large amounts of 5% sodium hypochlorite solution. Scoop up all material and place in an approved container. After sealing, decontaminate the exterior and label. All leaking containers should be packed with sorbent (e.g. vermiculite) and placed between the interior and exterior containers. Label and dispose according to regulations. Conduct general area monitoring.

If sodium hypochlorite solution is not available then use the following in order of preference: Calcium Hypochlorite and Super Tropical Bleach Slurry (STB). WARNING: Pure, undiluted Calcium Hypochlorite (HTH) will burn on contact with liquid blister agent.”

This is just the “mustard gas” that was dumped and it will, “corrode steel at a rate of 0.0001 in. of steel per month at 65 °C.”

I have not mentioned radioactive substances in all of this. There is no mention of other chemicals like nerve gas. I still what to know where those numbers came from.

Well in short VX is bad news! As it happens here is a process that can be used
    http://www.nickelinstitute.org/ index.cfm/ ci_id/ 14231/ la_id/ 1.htm
VX is not water soluble and here is some direct data…
The best way to sum it all up is that ocean plants and animals cannot tolerate these chemicals. The EPA would measure parts per million and establish an acceptable tolerance allowed that is greater than the existing ratio. Should the level rise to be the same or greater the EPA would simply establish a new limit of acceptability. Ultimately the oceans will be too toxic to support much life if any and our work will be done.

    May 22, 1968/At Sea, Atlantic:

The submarine USS SCORPION (SSN-589) sank May 22, 1968 in more than 10,000 feet of water about 400 miles southwest of the Azores. SCORPION is in two major sections. The forward hull section including the torpedo room and most of the operations compartment is located in a trench that was formed by the impact of the hull section with the bottom. The sail is detached. The aft hull section including the reactor compartment and engine room is located in a separate trench that was formed by the impact of the hull section with the bottom. The aft section of the engine room is inserted forward into a larger diameter hull section in a manner similar to a telescope. There were two Mark 45 ASTOR torpedoes with nuclear warheads aboard SCORPION when she was lost in 1968. The warheads were low-yield tactical nuclear weapons. The special nuclear material from the warheads has not been recovered.

    Pu239 has a 24,100 year ½ life.
