Sen. Arlen Specter proposes a deal

By Nico Pitney on Jun 13th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

Sen. Arlen Specter proposes a deal

to obtain the testimony of freshly subpoenaed former White House officials Harriet Miers and Sara Taylor: “He’d prefer that there be a public hearing and that the hearing be under oath, but said that’s not necessary, given that it’s a crime to lie to investigators, even if it’s not under oath. But Specter said there needs to be a transcript — otherwise it would be much more difficult to hold an aide to account for lying.”

Are you starting to squirm about in your seat for some reason, Mr. Specter?
You got off easy on Monday with the no-confidence vote on Gonzo, is this one getting a little closer to home?

  2. Mr. President says:

    OK, here’s the deal,

We get ta do what the fukc we want, when the fukc we want to do it,

    You… well…
    You can go fukc yourself!

  3. beemer says:

Hey, Arlen, you’re not in charge anymore. So sit the f**k down and shut the f**k up. You can’t cover for your co-conspirators anymore.

  4. little d says:

This may be the last offer that Congress will make, though I doubt the White House understands that or will accept it. These issues will not be resolved in court, and I think Arlen Spector knows it. This seems to be the preface to the long walk Spector will undoubtedly be part of to let these crooks know they must resign or be imeached. I think they will choose impeachment, and this will begin before August ends.

  5. JPV says:

What has this two-faced weasel Specter, got up his sleeve this time, I wonder.

  6. JG says:

Helloooo…. I think that is the whole point. They don’t want any records or transcripts period that would be able to be used against them and hold them to account.
Man, I would give anything to clean house and start over again with all new people. I can’t hardly bear to see what they are doing to our country and our system of government, our laws and judiciary. What I hate the most is breaking the faith and trust of the American people. I think that is the hardest thing to restore.

Do you realize how many years it will take to fix what they have dismantled or distorted 9let alone destroyed)? If it is even fixable..

  7. katy says:

” … otherwise it would be much more difficult to hold an aide to account for lying.”

and there WILL be some LYING …

oath or not… … it’s. what. they. do.

  8. dixie blood says:

Specterum is the useless sentator from PA that allowed a staff member to place a tricky little modification in the Patriot Act that led to the ENTIRE USA SCANDAL AT THE DOJ!!!

Specterum needs to answer some serious questions!!!!!! How did this happen Hayseed Specterum??

Are you too old to control your staff? Too stupid? Too slow? WTF old man? Your office ph*cked all of us here!!!!

  9. rfinca says:

Specter: I’d prefer that there be a public hearing and that the hearing be under oath, but that’s not necessary, given that it’s a crime to lie to investigators, even if it’s not under oath.

    Democrats: Okay.

  10. Mike says:

Arlen Sphincter talkin’ out his ass again

What the hell? OMG … maybe Specter needs to be looked at too.

  12. Gregor says:

How about another Gang of 14 compromise? The Dems are spineless suckers for just about anything these days as long as they get their cash from the military complex lobby.

  13. dixie blood says:

maybe Specter needs to be looked at too.

    Comment by had enough — June 13, 2007 @ 10:07 pm

Exactly, it was his office that put the language in the Patriot Act that facilitated the entire DOJ corruption and criminal activities!! He needs to be investigated up the yazoo!!!

This man is either STUPID to the core or CORRUPT to the core!! Take your pick trolls!!!

  14. Jay Randal says:

Specter was once a prosecuter so he knows that testimony not under oath is hearsay and worthless. So for Arlen to say they can testify NOT under oath is hypocrisy.

  15. Mr. President says:

    Comment by dixie blood — June 13, 2007 @ 10:11 pm

    Oh yeah, you’re totally right.

If he had anything to do with anything in the US govt, the Dems need ta get out their flashlights and shine it up is a$$hole.

    Totally.

  16. Tom3 says:

Arlen Sphincter is just another lying, cheating Republicrook.

So who are y’ gun git t’ shine a flashlight up the Dems’ a$$holes???

  19. Jay Randal says:

Rep. Leahy runs this committee now, so he needs to hit Specter on the head with the gavel.

  20. Jay Randal says:

Senator Leahy I mean > lol.

  21. Tom3 says:

    Leahy needs to cram t
    at gavel up Arlen’s Sphincter.

  22. Jackie says:

Spector knows that he has to save his friends as he is loyal Bushie. We’ve had so many White House officials lie under oath and even the Attorney General has lied under oath. Spector was told to save Miers and he is doing his job as he was ordered. The good thing is Spector doesn’t have the last word on this. I know alot of GOP supporters in jail would have loved that deal. Maybe Libby can ask the court to let his lies under oath be treated like Miers.

  23. Zooey says:

    Public hearing.

  24. veritas says:

Another typical Specter stunt! He poses as the tough front man (the barker) and then lets them slide off the hook – either they are under oath or forget it! We’ve seen how they lie when not under oath (and even under oath as the case with Libby) so it’s “no deal” but thanks for playing, Arlen!

  25. veritas says:

Absolutely…..and Specter knows full well the “track record” of these lying thugs – so it’s incredibly important for it to be public, under oath, and with full transcript! These weasels cannot be trusted to tell the truth unless it is done appropriately.

  26. veritas says:

If Congress permits this “deal” to be made, then I believe that more Democrats will jump ship as I have recently done. And this aint’ going to be pretty when they do. Grow some balls, Congress and make your demands. Don’t permit a Repuke like Specter to call “your shots”!

  29. had enough says:

Why is Specter opening the door for more lying and nonsense? This is incredible. Leahy will not put up with it. And Conyers… he is also getting ready – he has had meetings with Greg Palast(sp?), news investigator and author of Armed Madhouse, and has acquired more info on this scandal. We will see some spine.

Would be nice but isn’t going to happen, there is not an ounce of non corruption anywhere up there. they all know each others dirty little secrets and all play ping pong to keep all of us off the trails. Pretending to look into each other, then getting blocked and pretending to do something else. Ohhh lets get tough, oh nevermind.

  32. dixie blood says:

    OT,

I’ve been watching Lorita Doan testify on CSPAN…(rerun)

    What a ph*cking moron!!!

She actually is trying to out think/talk a boat load of smarter people and she’s drowning in her own stupidity!!!

  33. Jane E. Schneider says:

I don’t understand how Specter could possibly suggest that it would not be necessary for Miers and Taylor to testify under oath. Yes, it’s a crime to lie to Congress, even if one is not under oath. But I don’t believe that Specter would have the guts or integrity to actually charge Miers, Taylor, or any of the others who have already lied to Congress, with any crime.

  37. Jay Randal says:

Specter would allow Alberto Gonzales to NOT testify under oath, when he was committee chairman, so he hopes he can still convince Leahy to go along with that crap. No member of the Bush Regime should be allowed to get away with hearsay testimony.

  44. Marie says:

Here we go again. Specter speaks the right words at the beginning, but in the end he wants to “deal” (read, give them what they want) and he backs off his tough talk.
If I were on the SJC, I would say No, a thousand times no. We have been down this road before. Oath. Yes. Transcript. Yes. No bargain. No compromise. Who the hell does Specter think he is?
He’s not in charge any more though he may think differently. He has betrayed the trust of the Dems before – he is a repugnican – no deal. No way.

  45. Tundra says:

If it’s no big deal whether or not they testify under oath, why are they so reluctant to testify under oath?

    Comment by Briseadh na Faire — June 13, 2007 @ 10:37 pm

Because the amount of lawsuits that they are named in is huge (as is every administration). You don’t as a matter of principal just show up and start answering questions everytime someone asks (Or you would spend all day every day doing that). If they really care and want you they will subpoena you (which will never happen because they are all cowards and let them get away with whatever they want)

  46. Gus Smith says:

Testimony requires being under oath – it is that simple. Why bother to NOT administer an oath? What is your point Sen Specter?

  47. 1970cs says:

This isn’t the first time WH counsel Fielding has avoided Leahy and dealt directly with Specter.

  48. Jay Randal says:

Sen. Leahy has a reputation of being easily pushed around, partly because he did nothing when VP Cheney said to him “Go f–k yourself.” Leahy should have told Cheney off, but he did not, so now the GOPers expect himto roll over for Specter.

  67. Paul in LA says:

Specter may have ideas for the Senate process, but the House Judiciary Committee does NOT take unsworn testimony under its current leadership (Conyers).

  68. Paul in LA says:

“Sen. Leahy has a reputation of being easily pushed around, partly because he did nothing when VP Cheney said to him “Go f–k yourself.”–Jay Randal

That’s utter nonsense. Senator Leahy has been in the Senate for nearly 30 years. His reputation is not related to the criminal VP’s cowardice, or the Bushco disrespect for our democracy. He is an excellent investigator, a clear-thinking attorney, and one of our best national representatives. Why don’t you attack the REAL criminals, instead of slandering one of our best public servants with NONSENSE.

  69. Paul in LA says:

“This may be the last offer that Congress will make, though I doubt the White House understands that or will accept it. These issues will not be resolved in court, and I think Arlen Spector knows it.”

On the contrary, I think the federal bench would readily rule in the Congress’s favor within a few weeks after subpoenas have been filed. That’s why the Bush Shitehouse lawyered up last week.

“This seems to be the preface to the long walk Spector will undoubtedly be part of to let these crooks know they must resign or be imeached. I think they will choose impeachment, and this will begin before August ends.” –little d

Impeachment will not occur, because we don’t have the votes to secure a conviction. That could change, but it would have to change before any such process will get out of committee.

The disaffilated (angry) left and pretending right here in the Comments may not like it, but TODAY WAS A BIG SUCCESS, and it is revolting really to see so many FOOLS trying to shit on the birthday cake.

Both Houses filed subpoenas on the Shitehouse! Sound the horns!

You can take a timeline of the Nixon admin. and lay it against this one. Attorney General who will “never” be fired — only to be gone from office a few months later. Approval ratings in the toilet. Stagnation of WH policies because of the scandals. Loss of support by President of his party.

    • Subpoenas to the White House is a KEY moment in the drama of the U.S. Democracy vs. George Bush, et al.

And all the angry left can do is try to piss on the parade.

Bravo Chairman Leahy! Bravo Chairman Conyers!

    Force the bastards to RESIGN!

Paul, put your research skills where your mouth is. Who are the members of the ruling class? Who are the War Profiteers? Who owns stock in those companies?

If we don’t attack the monied interests behind WAR, we will always have war.

We need to make PEACE more profitable than War.

  71. JPark says:

Thanks BnF, I am not the one to call people out. Some like to throw things around without actually digging (ok, me). I can start the War Profiteer list…Halliburton, KB&R, Blackwater, Exxon, Aegis, Qualcomm, Lockheed Martin. I think we can make a larger list.

  72. liz says:

tell Arlen to take an oath sometime.

  73. trippin says:

Well, in the interest of justice, thankfully Senator Sphincter isn’t in charge. He’s the guy who insisted Gonzalez not be put under oath while the Republican syndicate was in charge. But, Senator Sphincter, elections have consequences, as we all hope you’ll learn next time your punk ass is in the barrel.

  74. sacdog says:

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems as though when a public official testifies, or even gives an interview, they are speaking to the American people, and it should be as binding as if they are under oath.

  75. Paul in LA says:

“Why don’t you attack the REAL criminals, instead of slandering one of our best public servants with NONSENSE.

So you’re claiming that Senator Leahy is a war profiteer?

That’s HILARIOUS. Post your evidence or your links, you slanderer.
