Reid, Pelosi acknowledge Iraq ‘disappointment.’

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) pledged yesterday to take new actions to begin withdrawing U.S. forces from Iraq, “ending the silence that followed the White House’s outmaneuvering of Democrats last month” to pass an war spending bill with no timeline.

“They’ve been driving this debate very well,” Mr. Reid said later, speaking of the bloggers who have been pushing for Congress to end the war. “I understand their disappointment. We raised the bar too high.”

It has been nearly three weeks since Democrats have held a formal Iraq debate or voted on an Iraq proposal in the House or Senate. Not since they assumed the majority in January has there been such a lull. During the three weeks, Congressional approval ratings have fallen, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she knew why.

“It’s the war, I believe so, it’s the war,” Ms. Pelosi said in a brief interview on Wednesday. “In terms of the issue that the American people want to have resolved, the war is three or four times higher than any other issue.”

So will Rip van Winkle finally wake up and show some spine?

  2. veritas says:

#1 If wishing only makes it so…..If these guys do not develop some spine soon, they will take the brunt of all of these disasters. As you know, the last one with their hands in the debacle takes home the trophy!!

The supreme “cave in” of the Dems to stand up to Team Bush on Iraq has turned the public sentiment against them. Then add to this the ridiculous cloture vote where three of their candidates fail to show up to even provide moral support and/or symbolic support (Biden, Dodd, and Obama) and you’ve got a ‘democratic disaster in the making’ going on.

Most intelligent americans really don’t know what to think at this point in time.

It’s beginning to feel like a case of the “lesser of two evils” to me.

    Time for a third party…

  4. shane says:

So Pelosi and Reid are closing the barn door after the horses are gone. Good job you two.

“Some Democrats understand that we don’t have the signature and we can only do so much,” she said.

Well, Nanci, perhaps with impeachment back on the table you could kill two birds with one stone. That is another issue that would increase your approval ratings and perhaps solve the “signature” issue.

  5. veritas says:

EVERYONE knew that this new plan of Team Bush didn’t have a chance in hell of working so the Dems failure to cut the purse strings is doubly troubling for them. It became a totally symbolic gesture on their part whose toll (in terms of additional deaths) will be on the hands of the dems now. So, essentially, they caved for nothing, as it’s turning out….except to now have “blood on their hands” in this war as well. I don’t get it. Guess that’s why Cindy Sheehan threw in the towel??

  7. nanlichi says:

Honestly, what can they do? The Petulant Chimp will veto any legislation that he doesn’t like and the Repugnicunts will vote lockstep with the scat flinger.

And the 28% religious carnies will continue to support him.

We are in Iraq until mid 2009, and maybe beyond. We will continue to throw soldier’s lives, honor and money at Iraq rather than the Repugnicunts showing anything close to self respect.

They and their defenders are worth less than the maggots in a road killed cat.

  8. veritas says:

#3 I agree wholeheartedly on it being time for a third party because, clearly, our two party system is out there functioning on it’s own with the “independent party” being the fastest growing non-party in the country…..right now the public is somewhere in the 47% vicinity with being “independent” which is quite telling. Amazingly, the MSM doesn’t even address the thoughts and will of this 47% of americans when it conducts it’s polls which include ONLY our two political parties.

Where is the will of this rapidly-expanding 47%???

It IS beyond time for a third party in this country. Our 2 party system is a true “dinosaur”!

  9. Harry Reid says:

Jeez Nancy, you’d think we people ctually expected results from us when they gave us the majority. Why wont they buy the ‘we need a veto proof majority’ line? I guess they are smart enough to realize tht we didn’t have to send the President a bill at all.

I wish they would understand that we can’t get anything done as long as we allow the Republicans to frame the debate for us.

  10. veritas says:

According the the MSM, almost half of all americans are not included in the political conversation……47% and expanding…..is a significant voice not being heard at all.

  11. veritas says:

google it for yourselves. I just did yesterday and discovered that 47% is the number for people considering themselves to be independent.

  12. Blue Healer says:

it failed because you raised the bar too high?

Uhm – no. You didn’t raise it at all moron!

  13. veritas says:

Nancy Pelosi has been a ghost of late and Harry Reid has absolutely no stature at all when he speaks (no pun intended). The Democrats clearly need a new voice if they intend to have credibility now.

  14. Blue Healer says:

It failed because you raised the bar too high?

Uhm – no. You didn’t raise it at all moron!

    STOP NEGOTIATING WITH THE DICTATOR!

    YOU WORK FOR US!

  15. Karim says:

Reid and Pelosi need to show some guts.

  16. Rosencrantz says:

Raised the bar too high? The dems pussied out of passing even NON-BINDING resolutions asking for a timeline for withdraw. Nobody is really expecting the dems to pull troops out the second they went into power. But COME ON! The dems backed down the SECOND Bush challenged their authority.

It was a non-binding resolution and when Bush said he wouldn’t sign, the dems backed down and signed the blank check. That is absolutely pathetic and why people are angry. If the dems won’t even pass non-binding resolutions then Reid has no right to say the bar is set too high when clearly there is no bar at all.

  17. veritas says:

Our best chance for doing something noteworthy was with the Iraq spending bill because there were plenty of Repubs who stood clearly against this war. That and the mandate of the people was scaring the Repubs into sobriety, logic, and honesty….when the Dems caved, public sentiment began to shift so the Repubs no longer feel compelled toward any sense of honesty and integrity and, as we witnessed last week with the cloture vote on Gonzo, they are now strengthing the party line. So, the Dems totally bungled their ability to get anything done henceforth with their caving in to the purse strings on Iraq. Now the Repubs will hold their party line stronger than ever.

  18. veritas says:

The Democrats bungled more than just the Iraq spending bill when they caved in and gave Team Bush a blank check; they bungled the presidency in 08 as well….sorry to say.

  19. veritas says:

And, with the wave of support they had during the midterms and their promises (albeit empty promises as we’ve learned the hard way) they appeared to be a “shoe in” for 08…..now the jury is out on that probability and it’s “anyone’s race” in 08.

The only savior to this horrendous gaffe on the Dems side of the fence would be the entrance of Al Gore into candidacy – he cannot be held accountable in any way, shape, or form for what’s occurring right now….

Al Gore in 08 can not only save the planet but can save this sorry Democratic party from ingesting itself.

  20. Sharon says:

My Dear Madam Speaker Palosi, You are only half right “it’s the war”, the other half of the correct answer is the very cause of this war, the present administration…

When you took impeachment off the table you lost half the democratic support, then the dem’s caved and gave Bush a blank check, yet again…In going against we the people you have lost our support…To regain our support the dem’s must show strength, start investigation’s for impeachment of Bush/Cheney/Rice/Gonzales and all the rogue goverment that has distroyed our once great nation, caused war’s, allowed 9/11 and abandonded the people of the United States such as Katrina victom’s…We the people will no longer wait for inabeler’s and stalled tactics in removing these law breaker’s and warmonger’s…

You had better move swiftly Madam Speaker and it’s past time to carry a big stick.. We demand result’s or we the people will vote in new people that will accomplish the job…..

  21. unbelievable says:

Reid: “We raised the bar too high.”

No you didn’t. You can’t say that and expect us to think you’re not caving in.

If I’ve learned anything from my students it is that if you don’t raise the bar high enough, nothing will ever be accomplished. Granted, there is a point in which expectations become unrealistic, and no one will ever meet them, but you have the majority now and getting our troops out of Iraq is NOT unrealistic.

Don’t cave now Harry… We can’t afford that.

  22. Harry Reid says:

    veritas

“now the jury is out on that probability and it’s “anyone’s race” in 08.”

I would agree with you, if the Republican were at all in line with mainstream America right now.

They are out of touch on Health Care. None of their candidates is supporting universal health care. 70% of Americans want it.

They are obviously out of touch on the war. Those will be the two biggest issues.

They are out of touch on fiscal responsibility. So much of their base is furious that they did nothing to reign in spending. In fact during the 6 years while it was all them, they increased discretionary spending by nearly 50%.

I think that only the nomination of Hillary Clinton can give the righties any chance at winning. This is only because she has such high negative numbers. The right wing in this country has done such a good job of demonizing her (unfairly obviously) that it her nomination could actually galvanize their base somewhat.

  23. unbelievable says:

Well, Nanci, perhaps with impeachment back on the table you could kill two birds with one stone. That is another issue that would increase your approval ratings and perhaps solve the “signature” issue.
    Comment by shane — June 14, 2007 @ 10:30 am

Absolutely! It’s not the act of impeachment, but the threat of impeachment that will control Bush. Neocons don’t like to be disliked, so they avoid anything that could indicate that they were not approved of.

They don’t want to be impeached, even if they wouldn’t be charged, just because the act itself is a condemnation the neocons find as unpalatable as anything that follows it.

Just putting it on the table is the same as a parent putting the wooden spoon on the table. It buys them a lot of authority they rarely have to use after the fact.

They allowed the President to win the PR War when it came to funding and, don’t ask how its even possible, were outsmarted.

  26. Jay Randal says:

    AMERICANS ARE ANGRY AT SENATE
    Thursday 14th of June 2007
    by Jay Randal

President George W. Bush has very low approval, by overwheming majority of the US population, but the Congress has even lower approval than Bush Regime.

Americans are unhappy with the Congress, because of the logjams in the Senate, so are getting frustrated at the entire membership of Congress because of Senate.

Impeachment of Bush and Cheney are being thwarted by the Senate, which operates more like an elite club than elected group, with Senators acting like royalty.

The framers of the Constitution gave too much power to the Senate, so relegated House of Representatives to a lower status, which has shackled democratic ideals.

The Senate has also become a bastion of protection for the wealthy elite, by coddling their every whim/desire, enabling them to abuse the working class Americans.

Note: If the Senate does not change its behavior, then Americans might call for abolishment of the Senate and overhaul of the House of Representatives.

(Jay Randal, political activist and writer in Georgia, USA.)

The two of them need to figure out a way to keep the past from repeating itself. Unless the dems can work past the republican media machine, they’re not going to get their full voice out there. Dems are still going to be pegged as anti-military even when they vote for addl funds and soft on national security even though they voted to go to war twice!

If I recall, A certain LIEberman is as close to aturncoat as you can get, and the Republicans are either so complicit or afraid of retribution they fall in lockstep with our Chimpy-In-Chief. SOOOO..
    Quit bitching and moaning.
Put your hatred where it belongs, In the Idiots who still support the republican party. Get involved in getting the rest of the Republicans voted
out of office, or anyone who tows Bush’s line-
Obey said it best: “we just don’t have the votes”. SOOOOO.
that means don’t think that “the Dems have failed us” for not “getting us out of the war in Iraq”.
    that is a lame argument.
The Democrats are trying to fix 6(OR 13) years of some of the worst governing in probably America’s full history.
    Chill.

  31. unbelievable says:

Let’s not ignore the Republican accountability in this mess either – they are following party lines and refusing to listen to their constiuency (I just get patronizing form responses to my letters, and they never break from what Rethuglican leadership wants them to do).

It’s both the Democrats who are weak and the Republicans who are sycophants that have created this problem of impasse in Congress.

In 2008, we vote out more Republicans, with the caveat that if the Democrats don’t perform, they will be out the door next.

I’m all for additional parties, because I think valid Independents (Lieberman is not a valid I) at this point are our best hope of reform.

  32. chimpeach says:

Nancy Pelosi voted against the supplemental spending bill and pushed for its defeat. Here’s what would have happened if the bill had been voted down or if another one had been submitted with a timetable for withdrawal and Bush had vetoed it: without a supplemental, Bush wouldn’t have been forced to withdraw troops. He’d have kept them there. He’d have taken funds away from food, medical care, armor, bullets, anything that benefited the troops directly, and used them to keep the military there. Then he would have blamed their lack of food, medical care, etc. on the Dems and the MSM would dutifully report exactly what he said without question.

The point is this: Pelosi was right about them setting the bar too high. The supplemental was not a good opportunity to try to hold their ground. It was a no-win situation for the Dems. There are other bills where they can do the same thing without Bush being able to hold the troops hostage. The defense spending bill coming up before July 4th is one of them and Reid says he’s going to use it.

Some of you people whine when the Dems don’t stand up and support a measure that’s destined to fail, that’s essentially a meaningless gesture (supplemental spending bill). And, then you turn around and whine when they do (AG no-confidence vote). Why even take the time to read the articles? Just put your anti-Dem whines on autopilot. Whatever’s going wrong, it must be the Democrats’ fault. If only they had a backbone, like these gutsy bloggers typing with all their might.

I’m all for having a third party. But, all it’s been good for in the last couple of decades is helping Republicans get into the White House. That’s the #1 problem we have right now.

Both of my Repuke “Representatives” are up for re-election in 2008, and I’ll be doing my best toget people to vote against them (if I still live here). This is Georgia, so I doubt we’ll get any substantial Democrats to run, much less actually win, but I want to scare them with a close call.

Even the states who have little to no chance of going Democratic in 2008 should try for close races, to send the Republicans a message that they are losing their authority as a result of their actions.

We just have to combat the voter caging by getting more moderates and right of center Republicans to join our cause, by telling them our values. People, after all, tend to vote their values, not always their self-interests.

  38. faith says:

Ridiculous. Pelosi and Reid should address the egregiousness of the war in Iraq every single day. Even if they do not get support or affirmation. Every single day.

The fact that Pelosi and Reid have both simply stood quiet after the vote demonstrates two things: they do not have the backbone nor staying power to engage in an honest and true difference of opinion with the sitting president. Two- they do not have the leadership skills to continue in their respective positions. They listen to others, consider Rahm Emanuel – a worthless politico who has proved that he does not have the no war in Iraq and Iran values of we the American voters. The war is immoral, illegal, and completely dishonest. Yet, Pelosi and Reid see no way to change the course? Murtha and Wes Clark should become the leaders. What they lack in polished political skills they both more than make up in truth and leadership. So, step aside Reid and Pelosi. You had your chance and you both failed miserably. FAILED. Shame on the both of you. A

Obviously, we do not have strong leaders in the Dem party right now and, obviously, the Repugs have become a party of debouchery, lies, and deceit – but does that somehow exonerate the Democrats from showing up even for a symbolic cloture vote??

Does that somehow exonerate the Dems from even posturing toward impeachment when they realize that it is their “responsibility” do to do and not their “choice” when impeachable offenses have been and continue to be committed??

In my book, it certainly doesn’t absolve them one iota. One can argue that what they propose will be shot down or vetoed; however, does that mean that they completely turn into whimps and do nothing??

I don’t think so…..and this is basically why perhaps the entire Congress needs to be impeached at this point.

Clearly, this Congress does not represent the will of 47% of the population (registered independents) so precisely whom do they represent?? 28% Republicans for sure…..25% Registered Democrats???

Iraq – Gave the President what he wanted.
Attorney Gate – Various laws are broken. No confidence vote that fails. (So what about all those new Republican attorneys with agendas that are going to be subverting the DOJ? What are the Democrats doing about them?! Not the AGs who serve at the pleasure of the President. The career attorneys!)
GSA Scandal – Despite breaking the law, best action from the House? Suggestion that she resign.
Democrats allow their programs/ideas to be thwarted by Republican procedural maneuvers. (And someone want to tell me why the Democrats didn’t use these same maneuvers with the Republicans?)

Scandal/problem. How about the Democrats cutting funding to that Department until the President/DOJ takes action?

The Democrats are being TOTALLY controlled by the Republicans. If this continues, they are going to be in REAL trouble.

The Republicans are abandoning Bush because of the immigration issue and STILL the Democrats don’t take advantage of the situation.

It is no wonder that Congress — and the Democrats — are held in contempt. Plenty of posters above echo my sentiments perfectly. Pelosi, Reid and company are playing perfectly into the Repug’s frame — Dems are weak. If they can’t stand up to this little tin despot, how in the hell are they going to stand up to foreign enemies, let alone stand up for America? Why are Pelosi and Reid acting like KKKarl’s best friends? Are they really that stupid? Are they really the best that the Democrats can put forward?
