Snow: Intense New Levels Of Violence In Iraq Are ‘Signs Of Success’

The Pentagon yesterday released its first quarterly report assessing President Bush’s escalation strategy, confirming that overall levels of violence in the country actually “increased throughout much of Iraq in recent months,” as attacks “shifted away from Baghdad and Anbar” and into “cities and provinces that had been relatively peaceful before the Bush administration’s troop buildup.”

Political reconciliation has almost entirely stalled, suicide bombings “more than doubled” from January to April, sectarian deaths have increased beyond pre-escalation levels, and U.S. troop deaths are spiking.

During his press briefing yesterday, White House spokesman Tony Snow said the increasing chaos was a positive sign. The new levels of attacks “fit a pattern that we see throughout the region,” he said, “which is that when you see things moving towards success, or when you see signs of success, that there are acts of violence.” Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/06/snowiraq614.320.240.flv]

Also yesterday, Snow sharply downplayed the importance of the September Iraq report from top U.S. commander Gen. David Petraeus. Just last month, President Bush said September would be an “important moment” in the war because “Petraeus says that’s when he’ll have a pretty good assessment as to what the effects of the surge has been.”

Yesterday, Snow described Petraeus’ report as merely a “first opportunity” to “have a little bit of a metric” to “see what happens when you have all the forces in place for the Baghdad security plan.”

Digg It!

Transcript:

Q Let me follow on that, because I think some American officials have called this an act of desperation. And I’m wondering how this is seen as an act of desperation. Does that mean that the terrorists are so concerned that they’re sort of being shut down, and that the surge is so effective that they’re now desperate to make a statement?

MR. SNOW: Well, I think, again — a couple of things. It does fit a pattern that we see throughout the region, which is that when you see things moving towards success, or when you see signs of success, that there are acts of violence. We saw that, certainly — we’ve seen that in Lebanon, once again, today, tragically. We also saw it earlier in Lebanon. We have seen it on a number of occasions where, when Israel and the Palestinians seem to be getting close to a deal, there are kidnapings and acts of violence.

+++

Q Tony, whenever you, or the President, or anyone in the administration is asked about assessing how the surge is going, you point out not everyone is there yet, it’s going to take a while — 30 or 60 days. Are we going to see any softening of the September deadline for a pivotal assessment on how this is going?

MR. SNOW: You call it a pivotal assessment — there are going to be regular assessments of what goes on — what has been going on in Iraq. And I think in September you will have the first opportunity to have a little bit of a metric to see what happens when you have all the forces in place for the Baghdad security plan. I mean, that I think — if you want a definitive judgment, I’ve warned from the very beginning about expecting some sort of magical thing to happen in September.

This is a war, and it is the sort of thing where you want to make sure that the measures that you are taking are producing results. And I think at that juncture you’re going to be able to have a little more granularity, as they say.

  2. Crump's Brother Says:

Here we go. They really have to stop doing this

We will never leave if this is the measure of success.

So when the violence goes down, and people are staying alive, that menas things are going poorly? UNBELIEVABLE!!!

  3. Candyce Says:

At the President's Dinner last night, W said, "As a matter of fact, I talked to General David Petraeus today. The final troops have just arrived."

So, we won't be expecting any more troops, or any more splurges? Is that his final answer?

  7. joe Says:

That would be a great theory - it's not completely implausible to say "they know they're losing, and trying one last desperate offensive to stave off defeat." Heck, that's what the Nazis did in the Ardennes in the Battle of the Bulge. It's not, on its face, completely implausible.

Except that the Republicans have tried that line before, and the uptick in violence was followed not by success, but by even worse violence, and a deterioration of the mission's chances of success.

  8. raynman Says:

You're a bible-thumper, right Tony? Have you ever considered the possibility that your cancer and its recurrence is God's way of saying that you're a lying sack of shit and the things you say to prop up our American dictator and perpetuate the killing of thousands upon thousands of innocent people are repulsive in his eyes? Hmmm? Ever think of that, Tony? I wouldn't, because I'm agnostic, but I'd expect a "God-fearing" right-winger like yourself to ponder that for a while.

  32. Chris Says:

It just underlines the total disconnect between the words they use and the reality of any given situation. They aren't trying to convey information (and definitely not truth), they are trying to manage the masses by saying whatever works in order to control what people are seeing and thinking while they continue doing what they want.
    Words are used to manage.

  39. Blu Says:

"when you see signs of success, that there are acts of violence"

Wow, this must be the most successful war ever! I didn't realize things were going so well until Snow explained things for me.

Seriously, this is what was referred to in George Orwell's 1984 as Doublethink. It's defined as "the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them". It's amazing to see the parallels in 1984 and what kind of spin Snow throws at us all the time. I'm not sure what is scarier though. That they keep saying the stuff, or that people actually but it.

    Comment by Sharon — June 14, 2007 @ 11:09 am

Because people were referencing it so much in 1983, I wanted to know what they were talking about, so I read it. That book blew me away then, and I thought how great it was that we lived in a country that would never behave that way.

In just 24 years, it's sad how that has changed so much...

You'll hate the ending. I cried about it for weeks... And I was only 16.

  41. JG Says:

Do you think these spokesmen for Bush honestly believe what they are saying?? I have such a hard time with that one. Do you suppose they can only do it so long and then burn out. Perhaps that is why Bush has gone through so many of them.. I would love to get the whole list of spokesmen since 2000 together in a room with a hidden camera and see what they have to say to each other..

  42. Jay Randal Says:

That is why he is called SNOW-JOB.

  43. G.W.SuperChrist Says:

I just wish some reporter would stand up and ask… if more violence is a sign of success… and less violence is a sign of success… what circumstances if any could arise that would cause you to assess the “surge” as unsuccessful?

If there’s no way to be unsuccessful – success itself is meaningless!

Is there any objective “metric” that would cause you to not “stay the course?

  44. Greg Says:

Tony Snow rocks! If I was dying of cancer this is just the way I would want to go out, lying my ass off to millions of people on television. This is no time to stop and smell the roses, just keep "catapulting the propaganda" as our Dear Leader says.

  45. margaret Says:

per Tony (he looks like hell!):

"This is a war, and it is the sort of thing where you want to make sure that the measures that you are taking are producing results. And I think at that juncture you’re going to be able to have a little more granularity, as they say."

    Granularity?

Judging from this definition, "The extent to which a system contains separate components (like granules). The more components in a system -- or the greater the granularity -- the more flexible it is", I'd say that Iraq is pretty flexible. Not sure if that's a good thing or not though.

  46. Russ Says:

So, maybe in Sept. we'll see much more bloodshed meaning that the surge is working really well. WTF

  47. RUCerious Says:

In more late breaking Bullshit, black is now white, and white is now ebon.
Up yours with barbed wire, Tony the Traitor.

  48. chimpeach Says:

Snow is the master of logical fallacies. He uses almost all of them in just 30 minutes behind a podium. I'm not sure what category to put this one in. Maybe "questionable cause"?

The premise is faulty: When U.S. troops are successful, violence increases (any evidence for that?).
And so is the deduction: Violence has increased, therefore the troops have been successful.

  49. gkam Says:

Tony Snow has completed his metamorphosis into an American Baghdad Bob.

    What should we call him?

  50. Joel Says:

    what a whack job

  51. Pete Bogs Says:

it's official - Doublespeak is the new American language...

  52. G.W.SuperChrist Says:

I guess if all violence were o stop tomorrow… Tony would have to stand behind his podium and tell the world our mission was a failure?

  53. Erroll Says:

Another parallel to Vietnam. People like Robert McNamara and McGeorge Bundy and Walt Rostow, et al, would measure success by the number of Vietcong who were killed while never acknowledgeing that the Vietnamese were going to keep fighting until the Americans were finally driven from their homeland. It is a sure bet that the Iraqi people feel the same way.

  54. gummitch Says:

The new levels of attacks “fit a pattern that we see throughout the region,” he said, “which is that when you see things moving towards success, or when you see signs of success, that there are acts of violence.”

All I want to know is: where does this pattern exist elsewhere? Where else have we any evidence of "success" or even "signs of success" (WTF?), regardless of whether there is violence or not? Because if "acts of violence" are a part of a pattern of success, the whole damn Middle East is jumping with success. Who would have guessed?

  55. Grand Moff Texan Says:

A truly Soviet performance by Snow.
    .

  56. Chris L Says:

So, if we are not supposed to rate the success by the levels of violence, then how do we rate it? What are the "signs of success" he is talking about? Personally, I would think that if more troops are dying and the Iraqi government is becoming more and more unstable, that would not point to success.

Okay I want to know: just what IS in the kool aide these freaks are drinking? Get our troops out of there now, if only to pull back to boardering counties to regroup.

Remember in the movie Aliens (#2) when the platoon was first attacked and in shambles? And the lowly corporal who suddenly found himself in charge? He ordered, at the top of his lungs, "Marines we are leaving!!!" They left, they regrouped, and they came back and kicked a$$. What is so terribly wrong with that strategy?

Hell, we might even find out we don't need to go back and kick a$$.

How long was he at Fox News? "Logical fallacies" are their specialty at Fox along with spin, blatant lies and supporting Bushco at all costs. Maybe Tony has been indoctrinated so deeply that he doesn't know what he'd doing. On the other hand, he's probably just a bald-faced, lying sack of shit.

    Like this question of yours:

'Is there any objective “metric” that would cause you to not “stay the course?'!

Great comment. Great example of a non-falsifiable poposition. If all evidence is proof that the surge is working, there is no way to prove that it is or isn't.

Praise Tony's cancer, let's hope it spreads to the rest of his cabal.

Sorry, but Tony is dedicating what's left of his life to sacrifice more soldiers' lives. May he and the whole administration rot like a wet potato.

Once Bush/Cheney are out no more stolen money for Tony and others. That's why Fred (Law/Order) joined in for the money. If Rudy wins we'll have both a woman/man President rolled up in one. Alot of cross dressing will be going on in the Rudy White House. Rudy will make sure the Mob beats out Big Business. Is John McCain awake yet.

Or try not writing down what they say, then not reporting it. Especially when their questions and followups are not answered adequately.

Or better yet, they collectively all stand up and leave the room in protest until they start hearing something that sounds remotely like the truth. Or even better, don't show up to a news conference in protest (and disgust).

This is true… but the Democratic leaders could have told W that he would take funding with bench marks and draw down dates or he would get no funding at all.

Instead of helping to spread the false meme… that if they did not provide the war funding our troops would be stranded in down town Baghdad fighting the terrorists with rocks and sticks… they could have taken a stand and told America the truth… that despite what the Republican say – defunding the war will NOT cause or troops to be left defenseless in Iraq – but instead will cause the last bit of money to be spent to bring them home.

They did not do this… instead they decided to embrace their inner weasel!

  105. Bush Turd Polisher Says:

Don't forget, there've been many "signs of success" in Lebanon and Gaza lately too.

  106. kasinca Says:

Tony McSnowjob, the White House Spokesliar, is still full of shit. Cancer is bad but so is being a liar.

  107. tomcat Says:

umm, is there any doubt that they are making this stuff up as they go??

  108. Briseadh na Faire Says:

Why, yes, if the Iraqis keep this up, we'll continue to succeed. I mean, at some point, there won't be any more Iraqis to blow up... all their cultural and historical artifacts will be destroyed, and the only things left standing will be our fortresses....

  109. powkat Says:

Everyone in the white house is so stupid and ignorant and a bunch of liars. I'd be suprised if anyone there would even notice if their pants were on fire.

...and I think in September you will have the first opportunity to have a little bit of a metric to see what happens when you have all the forces in place for the Baghdad security plan.

Apparently he was at the doctor when the 'generational war', and the 'think of Iraq like South Korea' talking points were distributed.

  114. VL Says:

Does that mean that the terrorists are so concerned that they’re sort of being shut down, and that the surge is so effective that they’re now desperate to make a statement?

And is that an unctuous toadying sycophantic rhetorical question from a White House Press Room Whore eager to score points with My Man Tony?

Intense New Levels Of Violence In Iraq Are ‘Signs Of Success’

So I guess 9/11 was a roaring success against terrorism?
    Huh?

  118. deport neocon filth Says:

when will a reporter ask hermann munster the real hard hitting question " do you actually want us to believe the shit you're telling us, and do YOU actually believe it"?

  119. RS Olive Says:

sorry for double post, error message made me do it!

  120. Billlong Says:

Tony Snow was a breath of fresh air when he first took his job. Although he did his best at mission impossible (trying to make Bush look good), he actually inserted a little truth into the press conferences from time to time.

All that is history now. Why the press continues to show up at these spin fests is beyond comprehension. I guess everyone has to be somewhere. And why we continue to listen to and read about these continued insults to our intelligence is also incompreshensible. The only thing that matters now is how fast we can get to 1/20/2009!

  121. fkay Says:

People the Bushes are stalling until they get out of office. The USA is going to be in Iraq for decades. What do you think that massive embassy is being built for?

  122. Blu2Purple Says:

Does anyone else think Tony Snow is starting to look like Baghdad Bob?

  123. NurseRiches Says:

So... by Snow's absurd logic, today's developments in the Gaza Strip means everything's going fantastically well, then!

  124. NurseRiches Says:

So... let me get this right... by Snow's absurd logic, we should be up there celebrating with Hamas in the Gaza Strip because that situation is obviously just about to go REALLY, REALLY well for everyone...

  125. NurseRiches Says:

Damn! Double post! Error message, btw.

  126. Chris Says:

He reminds me more every day of the Iraqi Information Minister, running around on the rooftops saying to the press, "The Americans have been destroyed".. if these guys weren't so absolutely sick, this would be kindof funny.

  127. Cstrut Says:

Didn't Rumsfield and Cheney use this same lie once? Yes they did but by now those statements have fallen down the memory hole of the MSM.

  128. Gorgeous Bush Says:

Tony is making Baghdad Bob look like Noam Chomsky. To get up @ a presser and spew such arcane insanity should be a crime. These guys must worship Satan or something. I'm wondering what else is up the sleeves of these fascists (besides more brown shirt material). It's getting to the point where they have lied so much and so blatantly that this thing has to be about more than just getting the Iraqis to sign an Oil law and for Bush to set up a dictatorship here in America. What they are planning must be so perverse that it defies comprehension by any rational mind.

  130. Gorgeous Bush Says:

Sorry for the double post but with so much doublespeak going on these days ... well you know... these things just happen

  131. colonius Says:

There's no real double-speak or absurd logic here, folks. Remember, the trademark failure of Bush's War is that he has never (until now) defined what success in Iraq actually is.

So yesterday, Tony finally told us, in a rather cryptic fashion ... paraphrasing only slightly, "the war is a success when there is more violence".

Finally, we have the administration's truthful definition of that they regard as success: violence, chaos -- in other words, no less than perpetual war.

They keep telling us, in barely veiled ways, this same goal of theirs, over and over. But we keep refusing to believe them when they tell us this, this truth as they see it. We keep thinking, there must be some more reasonable, constructive goal that they really have in mind, they are just having major trouble achieving it.

Simply take them at their word -- what they believe is, violence, destruction, perpetual war, is good. $$$$$.

The correct journalistic response is to simply tell this to the people: "Tony Snow, on behalf of POTUS, is telling us, finally, after more than 4 years, tens of thousands of deaths, and trillions of US taxpayer dollars, the objective of this war: more violence."

  132. colonius Says:

Sorry, I meant to say, "hundreds of thousands of deaths." Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

  133. Melissa Says:

    Granularity?

  134. Melissa Says:

    Granularity

  135. Leftside Annie Says:

If lying caused cancer, the entire Bush administration would be dead.

  136. Cole Says:

This thread has it all wrong. It is all in the definition of "Success".
If success does not succeed then do the logical thing--broaden the meaning of "success".

If in doing that you allot a value for "success", and you find that the value is quantity of bombs dropped, bullets shot then it follows that increasing violence is putting large funds into the pockets of those who need it most-----the munitions makers---and is therefore "Success"!

You know the old story of destroying a village in order to save it--? --the classic "success". Iraq is slowly becoming that village.

  137. Kenny Says:

The goal of this adminisration is to keep the middle east in the dark ages. A free and democratic Iraq or any middle easterm county would only mean less oil for us. Our only goal is to keep the oil supply comming to US.
Now that so many other countries are consuming more oil, we cannot afford to let Arab nations consume as well. The lies of the Bush Adminitration that the surge is working will allow us to remain in Iraq FOREVER. Hence the huge U.S. embasy being built. Soon the oil fields will be gone and we can finnaly leave the middle east. Just wait for it.

  138. ozarkBison Says:

didn't they give the same exact rationale a couple years back about more violence means things are getting better?

  139. Dick 'the Dick' Cheney Says:

YES TONY...... VOILENCE IS A GOOD SIGN, LIKE CANCER IS A GOOD SIGN THAT YOUR BODY IS WORTHY OF BEING ATTACKED.

SEE.... IF YOU WERE DEAD... NO CANCER.

CANCER IS THE PROOF OF GOOD.

does all this thinking make your head hurt??
------that is good too... it means you still have feeling in your head.
