My fellow citizens in the DFW area are spilt on this. A lot of us do not care about who the mayor is sleeping with, or what his pref’s are. BUT…this is Texas (RedState Heaven, home to the 28% Bush supporters) and I see lots of ugly meaness coming out. They even have African American ministers supporting the other guy because he isn’t gay when their congregations would benifit much more from Oakleys policy’s. This place is a trip…and not a good one! And no I won’t leave, I am going to stay and fight to make it better!

Lots of African Americans have a problem with the Democratic Party wanting them to give up their moral values in order to get policies that help them. The nerve!
I just moved from LA to Dallas and believe it or not Dallas is more progressive and diverse than LA on many fronts. When I heard one of the mayorial condidates was gay I wasn’t at all supprised. South Mid Cities Dallas-Forth worth along the 360 is like a upper class UN…
#13 I am an educated, black man with a great job, a wife and 2 kids. We lead a very comfortable life. I promise you when I survey the landscape of our community, sexual orientation, gay marriage and abortions are not the top issues we are fighting. Black ministers in large part need to get a clue. They have often left their their brains at the altar of Bushes’ faith based MONEY! They know who they are.
What BTW is immoral about having a gay mayor? Do you have knowledge of some immoral behaviour by him??? If you do you have been invading his privacy, which in itself is immoral. Provided of course he is doing somthing immoral in private. The GOP offers not much for blacks, it does offer a haven for closeted bigots and those who would shroud their intolerance under the word CONSERVATIVE. THAT word is our new CALL TO ACTION word on the battlefield for justice. That is based on my experience, if you have a diffrent experience, fine. Know this, we are not aligned with the DEMORCRATIC party because we are idiots. Even if you think we are.
I would love to vote for Ed, unfortunately Oakley is the type of big money Democrat that drives me crazy. He’s used his position on our city council to line his & his friends pockets (Texas Democrat, the Dallas Observer has come out on their blog and said that Oakley has completely misrepresented their article on Leppert’s construction company). On top of that he is a major backer of the Trinity River boondoggle (which would line his pockets even further).
His plan for Dallas’ ever growing crime problem is to tear down low income apartments (evidently his solution to our homeless problem is to make more).
The amount of hateful crap floating around had me rethinking my position, but love of my city keeps me from voting for him simply because he sleeps with other men. I am a lifelong Democrat and Tom Leppert will be the first Republican I have EVER voted for.
Just letting you know homophobia isn’t the only reason he would lose. A lot of progressives like me who would love to have a gay mayor to go with our lesbian sheriff just can’t get past his cronyism.
Homosexual marriage is a fraud/counterfeit.
Lets play house.
Husband = man
Wife = man?
Homosexual marrige – I now pronounce you husband and husband?
Bisexual marriage – I now pronounce you husband and wife and husband?
I now pronounce you wife and husband and wife?
“Dallas has a lot of political dirt on both sides of the isle.” absolutely they do and if it’s the lesser of two evils, or the evil of two lessers I will always go with a Democrat. After six years of Dubya the governor followed by eight years of Dubya the presnit I gotta say I’ve had enough of the black hearted WASP brotherhood.
#20 Lets play house describes a lot of hetero marriages too. I am not a proponent of gay marriage, I just don’t think it deserves the status of BIG PROBLEM in our community. I favor civil unions or some other legal arrangment.
I’m in Dallas and think it would be sort of fun for the city to have the distinction, but I really don’t think Ed is the best candidate. What really make me mad is gay people insisting that I HAVE TO vote for the gay guy (logic: eveidently only because I too am gay.)
REALLY? Is that how we want it to work?
I look forward to the day when everyone looks at the person and their policies . . . not their religion, race or sexual orientation.
I live in Dallas and have been following the blogs. Dallas is famous for its sublte media homophobia. Only the local gay Dallas Voice has come out in support of him.
The Dallas Observer, our alternative paper is managed and edited by a Pentecostal extremist who claims to have prayed away her lesbian ways. The Dallas Morning News might as well be written by Fred Phelps.
Now they have brought in the Heritage group to make phone calls making sure voters know that Ed Oakley is “openly gay”…………
Many local political blogs will not allow dissenters to post.
It is too bad because the gay candidate has worked hard for this city for a long time and the other guy just moved here.
I would like to add that the Dallas Progress, which has a post listed here is about an extreme right wing blog.
If you don’t believe me, try and go post something pro Ed Oakley and see if it gets through……….
The Dallas media outlets are experts in the art of sublte bashing in their verbiage.
One of my favorites is……I love Ed Oakley (gay mayor) but I think he is a sleazeball and a liar.
#20 Flaco, I never got a straight answer out of you yesterday:
How does gay marriage damage (I believe the word yesterday was “redefine”) my own heterosexual marriage? How does it affect your marriage, or your ability to marry?
I guess Providence, RI doesn’t count as a major US City… (my poor little Rhody – even your state capital means nothing)
June 15th, 2007 at 1:39 pmthis implies that rudy guiliani is straight.
TP, please correct this inaccuracy.
June 15th, 2007 at 1:40 pmOh the irony. Molly Ivins has got be enjoying this.
June 15th, 2007 at 1:44 pmWell it’s that or the crook.
Hmmmmm I wouldn’t doubt my fellow Dallasites will vote in the crook before an Egad! gay person.
Backward assed country f*cks.
June 15th, 2007 at 1:48 pmA gay major… in Texas?
Kind of reminds me Blazing Saddles and the first black sheriff moment…
June 15th, 2007 at 1:48 pmTempe, Arizona had an openly gay mayor. I don’t suppose it’s a major city, but it’s part of the Phoenix metro area.
Of course, there was a recall election pretty much entirely because he was openly gay, but it failed.
June 15th, 2007 at 1:54 pmThat’s FABULOUS, Dallas! :)
June 15th, 2007 at 2:03 pmWhat about Ed Koch? New York isn’t big enough? Or he wasn’t openly gay?
June 15th, 2007 at 2:12 pmit should read MAYOR not MAJOR
June 15th, 2007 at 2:15 pmTypo correction needed: gay “major” should be “mayor”…
June 15th, 2007 at 2:15 pmrotflmao! That is one classy website TP is linking to. It just gets better and better!

June 15th, 2007 at 2:43 pmGood for you Texasjuice…
…killing conservatism is the only way American democracy…
…will survive…
…and the people can move forward…
…conservatives are THE ENEMY!
…kill conservatism before it grows…

June 15th, 2007 at 4:31 pmAustin had a scantilly clad cross-dressing homeless man run for Mayor, and he didn’t really do that bad.

June 15th, 2007 at 5:04 pmThanks Zooey.
There’s a grass-roots, big push happening in the Liberal movement here in Dallas, thanks in a large part to the gay/lesbian community.
But, Mr. Oakley has not won yet!
June 15th, 2007 at 5:47 pmIt is interesting to note that Dallas County went Democratic in the last election.
June 15th, 2007 at 6:12 pmDallas, Texas? That was where JFK got gunned down. Best for the Gay mayor to never ride in an open motorcade in that city.
June 15th, 2007 at 7:37 pmA gay mayor? In red texas? Wow. Hot damn.
My bigot aunt will be squirming in her pants. (She lives in Dallas)
June 16th, 2007 at 1:26 pmDallasites were true to form, electing the straight candidate by a healthy margin. I knew they would do the right thing.
