Breaking: Fifth Top Justice Official Linked To Attorney Scandal Resigns»

Mike Elston, chief of staff to Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty, has become the fifth Justice Department official to resign after being linked to the firings of several U.S. attorneys:

Elston’s resignation is effective at the end of next week. Reached Friday afternoon, he confirmed his plans to leave but would not say why.

Elston is a key figure in several recent Justice Department scandals:

– Last month, Elston admitted that at the direction of McNulty, he placed calls to four fired U.S. attorneys calls that three of the prosecutors say involved threats not to testify before Congress about their dismissals. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) said that Elston’s calls were one of many examples in this scandal that have the “whiff of obstruction of justice.”

– Former Missouri U.S. Attorney Bradley Schlozman recently testified that he had consulted with Elson about filing controversial voter fraud indictments a week before the 2006 election. Former Justice Department officials have said that Schlozman’s call to Elston was “inappropriate” and may have been part of an effort to “pressure” Election Crimes chief Craig Donsanto into approving the indictments. [Link]

– Elston came under fire for allegedly politicizing the DoJ Honors Program, a highly selective program for entry-level DOJ lawyers. A group of anonymous Justice Department employees complained that “Elston rejected hundreds of potential applicants to the program last year seemingly based on their political backgrounds.” [Link]

This is normal staff turnover during an administration.

Elston wants to spend more time with his family, that’s all.

There is no evidence of any obstruction of justice. None. That is all hearsay.

These show trials embolden the terrorists.

Look over there! Nancy Pelosi’s Approval rating!

  3. Bob Says:

Wow. That’s a lot of people resigning over “nothing wrong”. Lots of short-term memory loss, mis-managaement, stone-walling investigations, even an official pleading “the 5th”, and ‘nothing improper or illegal’ was done. Ya, right.

Anyone want to buy some ocean-front property? It’s in Arkansas.

  50. veritas Says:

Mikey r: Relative to my last post, I believe Comptroller V (for Viper?) and Mr. President may be one and the same village idiot troll. I make it a practice to NEVER acknowledge or respond directly to a troll. It’s what they want: Their lives are so empty and devoid of legitimate social contact that when they active a blogger, they receive a surge of vitality which tells them that they are, in fact, still alive.

We try to assist each other with some of the schizophrenic trolls who have known multiple monikers. Every now and then one surfaces with a new moniker so it takes a while. Anyone with a background in linguistics and patterns of expression, typing style, and actual vocab used nails the trolls in their tracks though.

  51. Spudge_Boy Says:

Just keep telling yourself that you fu*king lunatic.

Why would somebody spend all day on a blog where nobody likes or gives a fu*k about anything they say.

That is the definition of lunatic, you piece of sh!t. Somebody should lock you up for being insane.

  52. veritas Says:

#49 In the business, Mr. President is called a “hijack troll”. That’s their main function - to distract and otherwise derail any intelligent discussion on the thread. Do not be tempted by the indiocy and mediocrity they exhibit here. None of them are worth a moment of anyone’s precious time.

Ignore the slimebags and they will eventually realize that they are dialoguing with themselves….something not entirely alien to them in “their world” anyway….hahaha!

  53. Buck Fush Says:

Mikey r - they are complete and total idiots and totally not worth anybodies time to respond to, I never respond to their crap. I just try and get others to realize that they are wasting their time responding.
They are extreme losers in real life, and are hated by everyone they know, so they come here to get attention, and to take their immature hatred out on others thinking that they are cute and clever, they suck.
Glad you realized your mistake by responding to them.

IGNORE THE TROLLS - Debate good, Trolls suck

  54. bogtrotters Says:

Hmmm. This would seem to contradict Mr. Decider’s repeated assertion that Mr. Gonzales has done nothing wrong. I could be jumping to a hasty conclusion, however.

  55. veritas Says:

When anyone pushes another’s buttons and makes them feel that they need to respond and do so in a fashion departed from their typical style of conduct, then the troll has “taken away your power”. In other words, they win simply by making you do or say something which is out of character for you. Similarly, ANY form of response give them a personal high that their ego so desperately craves. Don’t be tempted to do it - you will only lower yourself to their abysmally low standard of existence if you do.

  56. Mr. President Says:

What is this a meeting of Troll Haters Anonymous.

I’ll let the meeting commence, and come back later when all you pussies are gone.

  57. veritas Says:

Actually, most of us here simply scan their posts and don’t even read them at this point. They have nothing credible to add to any intelligent discussion and are simply spewing their necrotic detritus all over our otherwise interesting threads here.

  58. veritas Says:

So the trick is to ignore the $hit out of them which, in turn, yanks their emotional chains and not any of ours….

  59. RUCerious Says:

A real unpaid troll is the guys that we see come in here and post one or two things to inflame us, then go away. People like Mr. President and jake are paid to sit here all day and attack us.

So, you guys ignore all you want and I will use the trolls to keep my blood pressure down.

  65. Buck Fush Says:

Thank you Veritas for your support in my drive for people to IGNORE THE TROLLS. I have been at it a while now and it is beginning to take hold and the Trolls hate it.

Note what Mr. Pres said there - you pussies - this is the sign of a punk troll - one who would totally get his a$$ handed to him if he did it in real life. Learn to recognize them by their lack of style.

Also note that he claims he will be back later cause his fun is killed now.

    Comment by Mr. President — June 15, 2007 @ 6:51 pm

    Nobody gives a fu*k idiot.

  67. veritas Says:

They’re either disgrunted Rethugs whose views are rejected by their own party or, as in the cases of the more articulate trolls (won’t see many of them here though) they are paid operatives whose charge is to hijack an otherwise serious discussion. We all have to wonder why they bother to come to threads which they oppose however - but it provides critical clues for us as to how sick psychologically they actually are. They’re angry and probably function in abusive environments and cannot spew their anger on more conservative blogs.

Every last one of them has a profound “anger management” problem which is always subsurface and ready to rear it’s ugly head when provoked…..so the concept of “not feeding the sicko trolls” prevails here; that is, unless you have nothing better to do with your time than argue with fools, charlatans, nincompoops, and morons.

  68. Spudge_Boy Says:

Also note that he claims he will be back later cause his fun is killed now.

    Comment by Buck Fush — June 15, 2007 @ 6:54 pm

He is leaving because even working for Karl ROve, these fu*kers have to take a lunch break.

  69. veritas Says:

Hey Buck! BTW, I LOVE your name! Too great! Yes, I can see how easily folks take these turds at face value and engage with them. Sooner or later, they say things in anger that they wouldn’t normally utter and it cannot be a great feeling. These turdtrolls’ main objective is to yank people’s chains and take their personal power away. It’s such a twisted, counterproductive game that it’s difficult to imagine how some folks can’t see right through it.

  70. Kriss Says:

#58, veritas. As a ‘lurker’ have been scrolling through Pres. Clinton ,Mr. Pres. and CompTROLL for a while now. These ’snoozetrolls’ are taking up 50% of the threads & you really have to hunt for worthwhile comments at this point.

  71. Spudge_Boy Says:

    Comment by veritas — June 15, 2007 @ 6:54 pm

I will say this again too. If I was at a party and some right wing moron started spouting their lies, I would say something. I would say it loud and in their face. I wouldn’t ignore them. I won’t let a lie sit still. Ever.

  72. veritas Says:

Hi SpudgeBoy! Great posts, as always! Anything on our multiple moniker Mr. President? I know he uses other aliases - what do you come up with? Ever watch the show “numbers”? It’s a shame these idiots don’t realize how transparent they actually are and how easily one can see their patterns of behavior.

  73. Buck Fush Says:

Veritas - right you are…they had being ignored. And I do believe that some of them are paid to do this, just log the hours they post, you will notice a “Shift” pattern.

  75. veritas Says:

And it’s good that you do, SpudgeBoy, if that’s the way it works best for you. All I am intimating here is that folks unfamiliar with the modus operandi of a troll can get, unwillingly, sucked into their slimey vortex of putrified lies and BS. As for me, I have a personal policy of never replying to or dialoguing with a sicko troll. That’s what works best for me. Obviously, until I can observe the pattern (linguistically and mechanically) I may actually dialogue with one until I realize who they actually are.

  76. bob (not the hacker) Says:

George W. Bush is the face of a Neocon cabal of TRAITORS to the USA, who have done EVERYTHING to favor rich and WARMONGER/CRIMINAL including start ILLEGAL WARS, LIE, and damage NATIONAL SECURITY by exposing COVERT CIA SPIES.

May he, and ALL his supporters, enablers, financial backers and apologists BURN FOR ETERNITY.

NOT from a “troll machine” (which is a diversion like Paris Hilton).

From a REAL American who is sick of TRAITORS like Bush, etc.

P.S. May Libby serve his FULL TIME, and not be allowed a MINUTE of peace-of-mind for that ENTIRE TIME. That’s what TRAITORS deserve.

  80. veritas Says:

  81. Briseadh na Faire Says:

  83. Namtillaku Says:

    Among many other things Elston did;

    – When Carol Lam, the former U.S. attorney for San Diego, asked to stay on the job longer in order to deal with some outstanding prosecutions (the expanding Duke Cunningham case among them), Elston told her not to think about her cases, that she should be gone in “weeks, not months” and said “these instructions were ‘coming from the very highest levels of the government.’”

This is the 2nd instance I can remember where one of these boobs is pointing the fickle finger of fate directly at the Whitehouse.

  84. Jay Randal Says:

Yeah, but when will Alberto Gonzales resign? Those under him are small fish, but Cheney is a big fat juicy fish to go after.

  85. me Says:

I heard that he quit to run for Senator from Montana.

  86. ForTruth Says:

Most folks don’t know this guy, won’t hear about, don’t care. That sucks too.

  87. veritas Says:

Since Alberto VO5’s laquered hair spray has obviously seeped into the hair follicles and into his grey matter, why the heck is someone mentally handicapped still doing running DOJ? I thought it was Alzheimer’s but I’ve heard that it has to do with his switch from Alberto VO5 hairspray.

  88. veritas Says:

Gonzo and Bushitco are flaunting his remaining on the payroll “of the people” in the people’s faces while shooting us all the bird.

  89. veritas Says:

It’s not that adding another dumped attorney to an already huge scandal doesn’t mean anything but “enough is enough already”! If it only involved a singular attorney, the people would still have a case. Adding more just makes it more deplorable and dispicable that Gonzo is still in his paid position.

Taxation without representation, folks! Your tax dollars at work to enable the Bush Cabal to destroy this country.

  92. GOPrCROOKS Says:

THEY’RE GETTING CLOSER AND CLOSER TO BUSH & CHENEY. SOMEONE IN THE DOJ WILL HAVE THE INTEGRITY & KNOWLEDGE, AND BE SICK OF BEING A PART OF THIS FILTHY CORRUPTION. AND, IT WILL ALL COME OUT. THIS IS THE MOST CORRUPT ADMINISTRATION IN HISTORY, EVEN REACHING THE DOJ. BUSH & CHENEY BELONG IN PRISON.

  93. Trollsitting Services Says:

    Yo, non-troll TP posters,

Mr Presnut and the SCUMtroller are a couple of bored college kids! Their mommies and daddies pay their tuition, and they take easy courses because they don’t want to learn anything but only get a degree.

Ruthless in demanding attention, they seek anonymity on the net. Of course, such caustic personalities attract the kind of real world attention they don’t enjoy. I suggest that TP set up a separate area, somewhat like Jimbo Dude enjoys at McDonalds, where the kids (trolls) can safely play.

  94. ForTruth Says:

I agree this has got to be the most blatently corrupt administration in history. Crossing boundaries which seemingly have not been crossed. Becoming increasingly brazen. Shucks, I guess it’s just a Post 9/11 Worldâ„¢.

  97. Kate Henry Says:

“that Elston’s calls were one of many examples in this scandal that have the “whiff of obstruction of justice.”

Ya think. It’s more like the stench of obstruction of justice. If we don’t end up with some convictions in this scandal our rule of law in this country will be compromised for years to come.

I really don’t understand why Congress has not appointed an Independent Council to get to the bottom of this mess. Give them the same power that Ken Starr had. Then, when witnesses lose their memories or simply refuse to testify, the Independent Council can throw their asses in jail for contempt of court and let them stay there until they are ready to testify. That’s what Ken Starr did to Susan McDougall when she refused to lie about the Clintons. He let her rot in jail for over a year.

I have to say that when I first started a policy of ignoring trolls, it was mainly out of boredom and frustration. I didn’t expect it to work. But it does seem to have some effect. Good on you for the sponsorship of the campaign. I’m on board for the most part.

However, I also must admit that, like Spudge_boy, I occassionally enjoy a good game of Whack-a-Troll.

I guess it comes down to “don’t take ‘em too serious”, huh?

  99. Shane Says:

I will say this again too. If I was at a party and some right wing moron started spouting their lies, I would say something. I would say it loud and in their face. I wouldn’t ignore them. I won’t let a lie sit still. Ever.

    Comment by Spudge_Boy

I’m with you SB. I find that arguing with idiots like MP and CT relieves tension and frustration. Since we can’t tell Bush how he’s ruining the country telling idiot trolls about it is the next best thing. And the fact is they don’t go away if you ignore them, they just keep spewing. But every body should do whatever is best for them.

I must say Veritas and Spudge Boy I didn’t think you could function without being directly engaged with troll-talk for that long.

(I know, I know, in post #81 Veritas begins by acknowledging a troll post, but I’ll give it to ya anyway)

  102. Angry One Says:

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has lied to Congress - again. Despite Congress’ passage of the Preserving United States Attorney Independence Act of 2007, Gonzales has once again used the interim hiring authority for U.S. attorneys rescinded by that bill. Sadly, this is precisely what Gonzales promised Congress on January 18th - under oath - he would never do.

“I am fully committed, as the administration’s fully committed, to ensure that, with respect to every United States attorney position in this country, we will have a presidentially appointed, Senate-confirmed United States attorney.”

I thought the now-deceased Senator was from Wyoming. Were you’re referring to someone else, or am I completely off base here?

Besides, Senators don’t get confirmed, they get elected. Or did you mean “subpoena” instead of “nominate”?

  119. chimpeach Says:

    #1 Mr. Presidunce

    Didn’t do much wrong:

Fired U.S. Attorneys for 1) not prosecuting Democrats enough, 2) prosecuting Republicans who did commit crimes, 3) not pursuing bogus voter fraud cases, 4) defending Native Americans against attempts to disenfranchise them from voting.

Lied about the firings, claiming they were for performance reasons.

Rigged the system so that new U.S. Attorneys, chosen by partisans in the DoJ who were taking orders from the White House, wouldn’t have to go through Senate confirmation.

Lied, saying that Griffin could be replaced by another attorney of Sen. Pryor’s choosing.

Lied, saying that system wasn’t rigged to bypass Senate confirmation, but that’s exactly how it was used and e-mails prove it.

Threatened fired U.S. Attorneys, saying that if they talked to the media they’d get smeared by the DoJ.

Hired and fired career attorneys at the DoJ on the basis of their political party and whether or not they were suitably “Bushie”.

A.G. attempted to shape Goodling’s testimony by telling her his recollections while the investigation was ongoing.

A.G. lied, saying he hadn’t spoken to anyone in the DoJ because he didn’t want to interfere with an ongoing investigation.

Pushed bogus voter fraud cases against ‘liberal’ targets within a few days before the election, exactly what DoJ guidelines said not to do.

I’m just getting warmed up here. You want more?

When one remembers that the constitution requires these people to take an oath to support and defend it, how could anybody argue that what they were trying to do did not violate that oath? Even after Johnny “Soaring Eagle” Ashcroft rebuffed them, they still tried to go through with it. It was only after several people threatened to quit that they agreed to modify it.

  127. JPark Says:

Wayne, even without the Constitution their actions were despicable (spelling was not so good, I would guess).

  128. JPark Says:

Wayne, they don’t care about the Constitution. Ashcroft of all people told them no and they went ahead with their facist plans. Come on, if Ashcroft tells you you are going to far you have a problem :)
