“Insurgents disguised themselves as cameramen so as not to raise suspicion while planting explosives at a major Sunni mosque near Basra early Friday morning. They detonated the bombs shortly after they left, destroying the mosque, and raising fears that sectarian fallout from Wednesday’s Samarra mosque bombing is stretching deep into southern Iraq.”

According to Tony Snow, this is good news.
June 15th, 2007 at 1:43 pmI thought the insurgents were Sunnis. Why would they be blowing up their own Mosque?
June 15th, 2007 at 1:44 pmAlso 3 Sunni Mosques Torched –

June 15th, 2007 at 1:45 pmHey, didn’t Tony Snowjob say that more violence was a sign of progress? They are succeeding, I guess?
IGNORE THE TROLLS – Debate good, Trolls bad
June 15th, 2007 at 1:45 pmTina Susman and Suhail Ahmad of the LAT provide ample anecdotal evidence that a lot of Baghdad Shiites are buying the conspiracy theory that the American military was behind the explosions in Samarra.
Iraqis blame the U.S. for planting the seeds of sectarianism and for the spiraling inflation and deteriorating conditions.

Asked who was to blame for the attack on the Golden Mosque in Samarra, the second in less than 16 months, Maithan, who feared giving his surname, was quick to respond.
“The American occupation,” he said.

June 15th, 2007 at 1:49 pmCameramen, hmmm…? Obviously a plot by the liberal media to make President Bush look bad.

June 15th, 2007 at 1:52 pmThe British encouraged infighting during their occupation in the 1920s. Recall too that Saddam’s party was a secular one and wouldn’t care at all about blowing up Sunni or Shia mosques as long as it brought grief to the Americans.
June 15th, 2007 at 1:52 pmspit take,
It’s working better than anyone could have imagined.
June 15th, 2007 at 1:53 pmNANLICHI,
You’re totally right. I said it was working, I told you it would work.
The more violence the better.
It’s just like VP Cheney said. We are seeing a spike in the violence because the insurgency is in its last throes. It’s working!!!
June 15th, 2007 at 1:56 pmwere # 1!!, were #1!!, were #1!! were the #1 dumb ass’s in the world. the only question left, is can we get even dumber?

June 15th, 2007 at 2:03 pmThis isn’t news. This sh*t has been happening day in and day out since the beginning of the Iraq Genocide Project over four years ago. (yes, that is over 1,500 days EXACTLY like this or worse).
Even though the US and ENTIRE WORLD know that the reasons for invading Iraq were bogus and wrong, and even though the “anti-war” segment of the US population now holds a majority in congress, the USA is still fully and deliberately perpetrating this heinous atrocity.
So, then, what is truly the “news” is that the citizenry of the United States of America has determined that it is okay to be murderers and oppressors as long as it comes with the stamp of the red white and blue.
The retaliatory attack that we are begging for is coming, and it is well deserved.
That’s the real news.
June 15th, 2007 at 2:03 pmComment by Kay — June 15, 2007 @ 2:00 pm
Exactly my thought when I first heard of this. Wasn’t that mosque protected by about 150 members of the Iraqi “security forces”?
Again, remember, folks…the administration here in Amerika and its puppets over in Iraq have no interest in trying to make Iraq a better place, and every interest in maintaining the status quo of chaos and mayhem.
When you take this into consideration, the administration’s shocking ‘failures’ in Iraq suddenly make perfect sense.

June 15th, 2007 at 2:07 pm#18 thank you, as a viet nam vet, please let me tell you it’s all an side job. this war is a whore for profit, and some day? maybe the poor smucks that fought in this farse will understand that. it took me 20+ years to come around, and face the truth. when your 19 or 20 and full of piss and vineger, and with out a education. your easily fooled.
June 15th, 2007 at 2:13 pmno dead…no injured? the mosque was empty when bombed?
June 15th, 2007 at 2:18 pmRe: the Samarra mosque bombing two days ago (check out how beautiful the mosque was/is) -
‘Former Iranian president Seyyed Mohammad Khatami sent a letter to Iraq’s top Shia cleric Thursday condemning the bombing, and arguing that the occupation forces have responsibility for protecting the Iraqi people and their possessions.
He expressed hope that the Wednesday desecration of the holy Shia shrine has not been a plot devised by the occupation to fan the flames of conflict among Muslims.
Part of the letter read, “When a land is occupied, all the responsibility for ensuring the security, interests and welfare of that territory rests with the occupiers.”‘

June 15th, 2007 at 2:23 pmAnd according to Tony Snow, President Bush was right there on the front line when it happened.
Why didn’t you stop it, Mr. President, why??
June 15th, 2007 at 2:24 pmMuqtada al Sadr is right…
the hand of the U.S. occupiers is responsible for the mosue bombing…

June 15th, 2007 at 2:30 pmWait…there’s still Sunnis in Basra?
June 15th, 2007 at 2:35 pm“Insurgents disguised themselves as cameramen so as not to raise suspicion while planting explosives at a major Sunni mosque near Basra”
News reporters have the lowest life expectancy of anyone in Iraq. What a great cover for planting a bomb.
June 15th, 2007 at 3:05 pmI cant prove it, of course, but this is the work of trained death squads. Thanks, Negroponte.
June 15th, 2007 at 3:15 pmPROOF THIS IS AN INSIDE JOB.
From the linked article:
“Suiciders” would have blown up the bombs while they were inside. What greater way to show your true devotion to Allah than to destroy a sacrilegious Mosque? 72 virgins guaranteed.
June 15th, 2007 at 3:15 pmI agree, Trip. More violence more profits for war/gun companies. Business is good…
June 15th, 2007 at 3:17 pmI thought the insurgents were Sunnis. Why would they be blowing up their own Mosque?
Comment by OxyCOn
I think that instead of “insurgents”, what they meant to say, was “mossad agents”.

It worked for the French in Algeria, didn’t it?
June 15th, 2007 at 4:03 pmSince we just gave the Sunni insurgents all kinds of new weapons, they should not have any problem retaliating. Maybe that’s what they used at Samarra. No wait, they promised, didn’t they?
June 15th, 2007 at 4:25 pmAs long as the violence rages, we keep our troops there.
June 15th, 2007 at 4:35 pmSo in whose interest is it to see the violence abate? Not those who want the oil, that’s for damn sure.
The surge is working!
June 15th, 2007 at 4:44 pmHEY,
June 15th, 2007 at 5:15 pmTHAT MOSQUE ISN’T DESTROYED. THE LIBERAL MEDIA STRIKES AGAIN. WE COULD STILL COOK A HOT DOG INSIDE OF THAT SPACE. WHERE’S JAMIL?
There’s one less place to blow up in Iraq! Can’t we all agree that’s progress?
June 15th, 2007 at 5:37 pmHEYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember seeing the Muslim Shiteaters ™ all cheering after 9/11 and then I think of how civilized us Americans are, I mean, all the reaction this gets from me is a half-assed “HEYOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

The decency and humanity of common people, something you will never comprehend.
All we can do is try to keep what remains of the decent American heart from being corrupted and consumed by men like you who have become crippled by hatred and given their souls to evil.

Would you characterize those people as Muslim Shiteaters ™ ?

May God have mercy on your soul.
June 15th, 2007 at 6:49 pmNo, not “stretching deep into southern Iraq.â€.. stretching deep into the entire muslim world. There are protests as far away as Indian Kashmir over the bombing.
June 15th, 2007 at 6:55 pm#38… the Shrine was a Shia mosque, not a Sunni one.
June 15th, 2007 at 6:57 pmTP headline has this one wrong.. the Mosque is a Shitte shrine, not a Sunni one.
June 15th, 2007 at 6:58 pmMy bad.. .didn’t read the linked article closely. I mistakenly thought this was reffering the Samara mosque blown up on Wed. Disregard my post upthread.
June 15th, 2007 at 6:59 pmInsurgents disguised themselves as cameramen….
right…. not that long ago, British newspapers carried a story….insurgents disguised themselves as Indians destroyed the cargo of several ships belonging to the East India Tea Company….
June 15th, 2007 at 7:12 pmPhotographs of the shrine near Basra showed that the big structure was leveled, a result that would have required huge amounts of explosives — more than even several men could have carried into the mosque concealed in television equipment bags.

looks more like a soccer game reprisal than sectarian strife to me…all part of the fun of soccer breaking out all over Iraq.
June 15th, 2007 at 7:37 pm.
Faire > it appears that US special forces might have blown up the mosque dressed as Iraqis. I have no idea why Bush would think blowing up religious sites is a good idea, unless he believes it might draw the violence out of Baghdad, but in my opinion it will make it far worse.
June 15th, 2007 at 7:43 pmThis is good news for the Republicans!
June 15th, 2007 at 8:03 pmIt’s all part of the plan.
June 15th, 2007 at 10:09 pmIt wasn’t “destroyed”, there’s still a little of it left.
June 15th, 2007 at 11:26 pmJay,
From the point of view of an occupying country with designs upon appropriating another country’s natural resources, the more the indigenous people kill off each other, the better.

June 16th, 2007 at 9:13 amlooks like that arming of the sunnis is paying off already
June 16th, 2007 at 3:44 pmLets see, that was a Sunni mosque, right?
So I imagine they’re pretty pissed right about now. And whats the plan?
Oh yea…., we’re giving them guns.
:|
That oughta turn out well.
June 17th, 2007 at 7:28 pmWell, I’m sure they’d never turn the guns we give them on us, right?
True, they are the group thats been planting IED’s now for 4 years and killing our soldiers, but…. they only act that way with IED’s.
Just because they blow us up with IED’s, doesn’t mean that if we give them automatic weapons, that they’d shoot us with them….. right?
:|
I’m sure it will be fine…
June 17th, 2007 at 7:33 pmWhy do I feel like I’m in the middle of a Mel Brooks movie?
