C-SPAN Gets Savaged By Right-Wing Radio Listeners»

Last week, right-wing radio host Michael Savage was presented a Freedom of Speech award at Talkers Magazine’s annual New Media Seminar. C-SPAN, which aired portions of the two-day event, chose to not air Savage’s acceptance speech because the conservative talker only appeared in a pre-recorded DVD speech.

Savage is now claiming he is a victim of censorship. Repeatedly attacking C-SPAN this week as “fascists” and modern versions of the “brownshirt movement in Hitler’s Germany,” Savage encouraged his listeners to call and email CSPAN about their supposed “blacklisting” of his speech.

On Washington Journal this morning, host and C-SPAN CEO Brian Lamb read aloud some of the emails he has received from alleged listeners of Savage’s show. The emails defending Savage are filled with personal attacks, referring to Lamb as an “ass loser Communist,” “pervert,” “bed-wetting commie,” and worse. Watch it:

Screenshot

Michael Savage is obviously not responsible for the content of these emails. But it’s worth noting that such attacks are standard fare for Savage’s radio show. According to Savage, MoveOn.org members are “rat-bastard Communists,” supporters of the Fairness Doctrine are “Nazis” and “no different than the Bolsheviks in 1917,” and Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) says things that “Goebbels would be proud of.

As Lamb notes in his introduction to the emails, Savage is also using the faux controversy to make money by charging his fans $20 apiece to buy a copy of the supposedly censored speech.

Again underscoring his ultra- reclusive nature, the “Savage Nation” host unexpectedly failed to appear at a ceremony where he was to pick up an industry honor.

Selected to receive this year’s Freedom Of Speech Award at the New Media Seminar held over the weekend in New York City, Savage instead substituted a hastily- made YouTube- style home video.

    LOL!!!

Americans support an active government that tackles problems, provides services, and aids those in need.

Americans support increasing the minimum wage and strong unions, and believe the wealthy and corporations don’t pay their fair share of taxes.

Americans support legal abortion and embryonic stem cell research; opinions on equal rights for women and gay Americans have grown dramatically more progressive in recent years.

Americans support a progressive approach to national security, emphasizing strong alliances and diplomacy over the indiscriminate use of military force. On domestic security issues, progressive approaches to crime and gun control enjoy wide support.

By enormous margins, Americans favor strong environmental protections, a core progressive belief.

Americans support energy conservation and the development of alternative fuels.
Health care - Americans clearly favor universal coverage and are more than comfortable with government solutions to the health care problem.

    http://mediamatters.org/progmaj/

Of greater concern for Republicans generally, however, is the party’s weak state heading into the 2008 election. By 52% to 31%, Americans say they want Democrats to win the presidency next year.

An Official Announcement from the RNC Troll Dept:

In response to several concerns about the errant messaging behavior of CompTROLLER V-1, we regret to announce that CT V-1 went “offline” several weeks ago. We sent out several technicians but as they are skilled only in the latest technology, they could do little with the antiquated programming architecture and physical plant of CT V-1.

As near as we can tell, its fact-distortion algorithm was corrupted when it actually tried to grapple logically with a fact-based argument from one of TP’s longtime posters. When the facts kept adding up against the position held by CT V-1, it apparently blew a circuit board, which is why we now advise all trollson staff against actually addressing arguments head-on.

Our field ops told us the best thing to do would be to let CT V-1 roam the blogosphere, and its batteries would probably run out of juice before its screwed-up logic did too much damage to our side. Unfortunately, the batteries were the only thing that were built well on the thing. They’re the same batteries that the Mars Rover had.

Therefore, our best recommendation is, if you enounter CT V-1, please try not to draw any attention to it. It can only hurt our side.

    Thank you.

  39. Rosencrantz Says:

I find it highly ironic that ANY right-winger would even be considered for a “freedom of speech” award. Freedom, by it’s very nature, only exists if it exists for everyone. There is no such thing as freedom if only some people have it.

Similarly, the right-wing noise machine, ranging from Savage and Limbaugh to Fox news are not interested in Free Speech. Every word they say and every action they take is designed to SILENCE free speech, and especially the free speech of anyone who has a different viewpoint from them.

To argue that Savage is an example of free speech is like saying Bush is an advocate for peace…or someone that incites a riot is an advocate for order. No. It doesn’t work that way. You can’t actively work towards silencing other people, whether that be through being loud or by demeaning others or by having your viewers/listeners threaten them, and then say it’s free speech. It can’t be free speech if you are encouraging a system of widespread social behaviour that oppresses the very thing you are hiding behind.

There is a strong difference between dissenting opinions and disagreements, and spreading hate and encouraging ignorance to suppress dissent. Contrary to what people like Savage would have us all believe…freedom is NOT slavery.

My guess is that Savage wasn’t on C-SPAN because he sent a DVD and C-SPAN is in the business of covering events and public affairs. Since he didn’t show up in person to speak, C-SPAN probably decided against videotaping a video display.

By the way, how come when a Democrat doesn’t want to go on Faux news, he’s a “coward” but when Savage doesn’t want to go anywhere in public he’s a “right-winger that doesn’t hold any punches”?

Why do you assume that they didn’t air it because they didn’t “agree” with what he said?

It’s very likely that the video and sound quality would have been substandard when played through whatever playback system was set up (probably hastily) and C-SPAN would refuse to air it.

Last I checked, C-SPAN didn’t make its programming choices based on what it “agreed with” or “didn’t agree with”. That’s Faux News.

  64. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

    The Savage Weiner is “reclusive?”

Right. The Savage Weiner is a frightened little excuse for a man who couldn’t stand up to an angry Nun. The little coward is afraid to leave his own house. He needs to broadcast from his basement studio and sends his wife to the store for him because he fears he will be confronted by an angry citizen of laid-back Marin County. The last time he left his house in Marin, a woman yelled at him and he called the police. Conservatives. Trust me on this. You really don’t want to throw your lot in with this little huckster who used to be a Marxist before he was hawking food supplements on late-night infomercials. The more you learn about him the more you’ll understand.

Be proud, conservatives. Be very proud to have such an exemplary human being as one of your spokespersons.

Those emails sound like they are coming from the trolls here.. poor language, poor spelling,…. just plain filthy emails.

It just goes to show the hatred influence weener has on his audience. The 10 - 15% brain washed by these right wing hate America talk show hosts are in need of some serious therapy. Very sad.

  94. Squonk Says:

If Michael Savage wants to see a brownshirt, he should look in the f*cking mirror!

The “have a nice day, d*ckhead” comment shows just how trailer trash his listeners are. Rush Limbaugh. Michael Savage. Glenn Beck. Bill O’Reilly. Ann Coulter. Sean Hannity. It doesn’t matter. The same army of neanderthal rednecks listen and listen religiously. Makes your stomach churn.

  95. gooderservice Says:

TP left out a few facts in its abbreviated paragraph. One, C-Span’s program director decided not to air the speech because it was a DVD, and C-Span doesn’t air DVDs.

Two, C-Span offered to air Savage’s speech live (later time) and Savage refused. (I think, but I’m not sure, that Brian Lamb also said C-Span offered Savage to come on the show or air a part of his show, but don’t remember exactly the scenario.) I do know that C-Span offered Savage live coverage after the fact and Savage refused.

Three, Savage’s people who emailed C-Span, the majority of the emails read that their tax money should no longer go to C-Span, since they refused to air the speech. Some were contacting their congress people. Funny thing, though, is that C-Span is 100% a private company and receives no taxpayer money, whatsoever. And for those who are regular C-Span viewers know that… as it is said continually by the hosts.

Four, I don’t know the impetus for this, but Brian Lamb showed the entire email, with the sender’s email address included. Unless I’m mistaken, he’s never done that before. When people emailed in support of C-Span live during the show, Brian showed those emails, minus the abbreviated headers, (not showing the email address). I think that’s hysterical, and I suspect that will be another thing Savage gets savage about.

Five, it was pretty funny when Brian pointed out a misspelling in one of the emails: “sensor”

What is it about the unhinged right-wing fringe that they constantly claim a supposed ideological enemy is both a Nazi AND a Stalinist?

Is it really that hard to discern that the Nazis and the Stalinists fought a war against each other? I believe it was called World War 2, but then again, what the hell do I know, I’m a goddamned Yankees and Red Sox fan.

  99. johnsom Says:

There’s just one thing all you left wing coolaid drinkers are forgetting: namely, Savage is right. Just about everything he says above is true. That’s what we’re up against, and you fools are too brainwashed to know it. Or know it, and are fighting it as hard as you can. But you’re idiots. That’s what we have going for us.

  100. Jay Randal Says:

GOPers are getting more shrill now. I guess because Bush has only 18 more months as president.

  101. Maeven Says:

Michael Savage is obviously not responsible for the content of these emails.

I would argue about that, given that Savage gave his listeners false information (”CSpan is taxpayer-supported”) and falsely implied that CSpan refused to cover the live event of Savage delivering a speech, instead of the fact that Savage wasn’t even present, and it was a DVD recorded speech that he’d mailed in. Just about every one of the letters that Brian Lamb read included “CSpan is taxpayer-supported” as the basis for their anger and sense that what CSpan did was “unfair.” These are the same people, Savage included, who argue that it’s a corporation’s (Clear Channel’s) right to ban the Dixie Chicks, and block access to the public air waves to anyone it wants.

What Savage did is the best argument for restoring the fairness doctrine.

The chief support of a democracy is an educated people.

  102. HumboldtBlue Says:

What the hell is coolaid? Get the damned copyright name correct, and use some facts you blithering fumbledick. What is Weiner right about? That he hates himself for homosexual experimentation and drug use as a young man? That referring to fellow citizens as Nazis makes him a sage of our time? It’s always the same with the intellectual midgets — we good — them bad. Junior high rhetoric from junior high minds.

  103. Russ Says:

I may be an optimist but Brian Lamb is a respected C-SPAN host and this will not set well for very many of his republican watchers. It could be a wake up call for those not yet outraged by the RWers.

  104. WC Says:

Savage is a son of a b* that endorses violence.

Several years ago I was listening to his radio show (stopped briefly on the station while scanning the frequencies to see what shit he was spouting that day) and he was talking about a soldier in Afghanistan who said that it was fun shooting the Afghani men because of the way they treated women in that country.

Savage called the soldier an American hero.

  105. WC Says:

The message in the e-mail shown in the screen capture at the top of this thread is indicative of the intelligence of many people in this country, especially those Rightwingers who couldn’t debate themselves out of a paper bag.

Instead of offering thoughtful debate on the subject and suggesting why they thought C-Span was in the wrong, they resort to childish name calling and offer nothing substantial.

In all fairness, yes, I’ll call you a name if I think you deserve it. Dickhead is one of my favorites, especially for idiots on the road who display poor driving habits. However, as many of you know, in most cases I’ll also offer up what I call food for thought and invite discussion/debate.

  106. iggy Says:

Lets see now, Rush’s followers are called dittoheads. Savages REAL last name is WEINER, so would that make his followers WEINERHEADS?

  107. JTitor Says:

These guys all learned from Joe Pyne was an American radio and television talk show host, who pioneered the confrontational style of hosting in which the host advocates a viewpoint and argues with guests and audience members. Pyne was confrontational with guests on his show and often attempted to throw them off-balance by opening the conversation with an insult. One occasion when this backfired was when he began a dialogue with Frank Zappa by saying, “So I guess your long hair makes you a woman.” Zappa responded with “So I guess your wooden leg makes you a table.”

Then there was Wally George. Wally George was neo-conservative before there was a word for this illness. At the height of its popularity in 1984, fans of the show would wait for several hours to get a choice spot among the studio’s 80 audience seats, where they waved U.S. flags and chanted, “Wal-ly! Wal-ly!” on cue. George engaged guests whom he called “ludicrous liberal lunatics” and “fascist fanatics,” including 1960s drug guru Dr. Timothy Leary and Tom Metzger, a white supremacist leader. Skinheads from Orange County made up most of his audiance.

Morton Downey, Jr. In 1989, as fascination with Downey’s show had begun to wane, he was involved in an incident in a San Francisco International Airport restroom in which he claimed to have been attacked by neo-Nazis who painted a swastika on his face and attempted to shave his head. Some inconsistencies in Downey’s account (e.g. the swastika on his forehead was painted in reverse, suggesting that Downey had drawn it himself in a mirror), and the failure of the police to find evidence supporting his story, led many to suspect that the incident was a hoax and a plea for attention.

They come and they go. If you want them off the air then call their advertisers.

“this will not set well for very many of his republican watchers”

You could be right, but I think part of the exercise Brian went through today was to set the record straight. He did it over and over again. I don’t often give republicans credit, but I think the regular C-Span republican viewers know better and won’t hold C-Span at fault. I think Savage’s followers are too on the fringe, so outside of one of them killing somebody, I think they really have no power. I hope I’m right.

It was so refreshing considering all the other msm was gung ho for war. (just a meaningless little rant there)

Are you referring to Alan Berg?

  118. Patty Says:

People in this country are naive to what today’s conservatism is all about. Savage’s listeners are just Limbaugh fans without the deceptive bone that allows them to hide what they have been TRAINED to become. The letters to C-span are just a little window into what the right has been breeding down on the farm for a couple of decades. You ever listen to Savage’s show? This will all get much much worse. If you think it will stay at letter writing you are a fool.

Savage and Rush condition their followers like cult leaders do - a steady diet of “we are being persecuted” - “it’s us vs. them” - “we know what the real America is and they do not” - this is how cults operate and CONTROL the minds of their followers.

This country is tubes. Bush is pissing on the constitution everyday - the man of lawlessness is at hand - and being cheered on by the mouth breathers who have been coinditioned into an alternative reality; a treasonous, trained group which WILL continue take us all to hell.

Talkers magazine must be the biggest fraud to roll into town in long time.

There’s no doubt in my mind that maniacs like the anthrax mailer get their marching orders from listening to Savage and his ilk, just like he got them all angry about CSPAN.

Even Trent Lott has seen the light about right-wing radio.

  125. JPark Says:

brianS, I agree with you on Savage. I think Limbaugh and the Fox boys are pretty minor (I don’t think their listeners are likely to go nuts, well, more than they are). Savage is truly hateful in the McVeigh way. It is only a matter of time til he gets his audience to go violent.

    Comment by JPark — June 16, 2007 @ 1:40 am

Of course they don’t want it back. It was the elimination of the Fairness Doctrine (thank you, President Reagan) that made a Rush Limbaugh, Michael “Savage” Weiner, and Sean Hannity possible. If it were still in place, I’m sure we never, ever would have heard of any of them.

But give them a chance to spew their venom unchallenged over the airways, and they know they can find an audience for it. You rarely, if ever, hear a dissenting voice on any of the top three talk radio shows (the three I mentioned, and all conservatives.) But you constantly hear dissenting views on the liberal talk radio shows. And the host always destroys their arguments, often quite easily because the dissenting conservative isn’t tuned into the truth and, therefore, the arguments he makes don’t stand up.

  131. JPark Says:

Wayne, I absolutely know they don’t want the Fairness Doctrine. There is nothing fair about the Limbaugh control (I don’t know why. Who would trust that a$$hole?)

Change “Stalinist” and “homosexual” for “hillbilly” and “industrialist scum” and you have the same emails from the other side. If people don’t like something because of perceived injustice they tend to send out insulting emails, which are sometimes hilarious in their wording - is there really a story here? Seems par for the course to me — free speech for all, and if ya don’t agree with them or Savage, ignore ‘em.

He is just one of the mouthpieces of hate on radio these days wholoathes gays, lesbians, liberals, women, muslims, East Indians, abortion, atheism, intellectuals, minorities, Buddhists, pacifists, Quakers, and any animal he can’t cook in his oven and eat. He is the radio’s Jewish Josef Goebbels.

  148. Lucy Sommer Says:

Savage is just so stupid. Does he even know the English language?

I agree with #6. Savage is a non-issue and not worthy of conversation anywhere at any time.

  149. EllsworthT Says:

I don’t get it: The Dems are always calling the Republicans fascists. For every one piece of what you would call “fascist” legislation sponsored by a Republican in the last 60 years, I’m sure I could count at least a dozen bills sponsored by Democrats that use the coercive power of government to control how people behave or how they live their lives. New Deal anyone? The difference is that you people support Democrat-sponsored coercion (i.e., genuine fascism) because you think the intentions are good and anyone who doesn’t is just a fascist, racist, misogynist, polluter, greedy right-wing nut who deserves it. The result is you dumb morons freely give up your freedoms (and mine) faster than any Republican “fascist” ever could. Michael Savage, McDonald’s, Exxon, and whatever person or organization of people you hate can’t put you in jail or a gun to your head.

  150. azbill Says:

And they call themselves - christians. HA They are fascists who don’t know the meaning of the neo-fascist Bush crime family. Anybody who even listens to the savage is just a Kook Aid drinking idiot. No critical thinking skills, the Kook Aid took care of that.

God you trolls are just pathetic. Why are you not all serving the oil war in Iraq??? Oh that’s right, you reich wingers are just all show and no go when it come to fighting for more oil for the Bush crime family.

  152. azbill Says:

Opps sorry, I forgot to mention that these “christians” are following a closet case gay person in “the savage”. They vilify gay people and then they turn around and worship someone with the morals of an alley cat, like savage and least we forget, matt drudge is also a closeted gay person. Are all the reich wingers closet gay people?? No, I doubt it, maybe only 1/2 are.

If I had to choose between living in a society filled with people who believed in the Golden Rule or people like yourselves who believe individuals are the property of the State (or “society” or “the common good” or whatever Socialist utopia), I’d choose the dumb but well-meaning Christians.

And if I had to choose between people handing me copies of The Watchtower or telling me I should follow Jesus (all of whom I can just ignore) and a government that can put me in jail if I don’t pay social security taxes, send my children to school, or refuse to hire the right kinds of people, or whatever well-meaning real, genuine government facism you morons support, I’d choose the annoying but harmless Christians.

All of you idiots bashing Christians, real and the hypocrites, are fighting the wrong enemy. Only the government can harm you. Harness your energy limiting the role of government, not supporting Democrats in expanding it!

As far as laws preventing what he has said? That is a dangerous place to go because then it becomes who’s judgement to decide what “hate speech” is? Freedom of Speech is a bedrock of a free society. But you can’t have the good without the bad. There will always be someone like Savage. You can’t let one bad apple (or two, or three etc) spoil the whole bunch.

  160. Floon Says:

I used to run Savage’s show on the radio. I still liked him better than Hannity, but I like food poisoning better than Hannity.

Anyway, Savage would often seem to forget how to do a radio show. At least once every week or so, he would just keep talking through the end of his show. No wrap up, no verbal indicator that he knew the time was getting short… he would just keep talking until the sounder cut him off. It was a weird thing, and it only happened at the end of his show. Maybe his producers aren’t signaling him at the end? Maybe he loses his mind completely? I dunno, but it was weird.

And he loves his little dog. He would bring it into the studio and talk to it on the air. Some awful, awful radio there…

Dr. Savage is a gift from God. There’s no one out there that’s as articulate, perceptive, honest, knowledgeable and fearless as he is. We live in times where it’s become fashionable to slam and marginalize Caucasians. Many Liberals in the media, like Ted Koppel, made a career out using their far-reaching soapboxes to poison the minds of millions with the message: “White people, especially white men, are holding you down and treating you like crap!” As a result of their lies, we now have black-on-white crime that has reached epidemic proportions (though the Liberals have made sure to keep it under wraps, i.e. out of the national spotlight, as in the case of the “Wichita Massacre”, for example). Very slowly, many of us (Caucasians) are coming around to what these shameful Liberals are doing, and so it’s with much gratitude and joy that we love hearing the brilliant Doctor Savage keeping us informed of what the evil-doers are up to. We’re so angry with them and all of the crap they’ve done to us over the decades, and so now — finally!! — the pendulum is starting to move in the other direction! God Bless and protect Dr. Michael Savage!!!

Of course, reality and truth don’t matter to a zipperhead — it’s all about fomenting hatred, and no lie is too egregious as long as it whips a zipperhead into a mouth-foaming frenzy.
