Yesterday, the House passed a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security, despite President Bush’s veto threat. The White House objects to a provision that would require DHS contractors to “pay their employees at least the local prevailing wage.” It also “funds the hiring of 3,000 new border patrol agents, rejects the cuts President Bush sought in the training and equipping of first responders, and improves aviation and port security.”

Is we safer yet?

June 16th, 2007 at 7:48 pmWhy does Bush hate Americans?
Obviously then, this would mean that Bush is trying to make us less safe by rejecting funding for things that would make us more safe. hard to argue with that one, trolls. And why does he object to the bill? Too expensive? No. Not enough funding for border patrol, training and first responder equipment? No. It’s because the government would have to pay workers hired by DHS a fair wage. THAT’S why he is threatening to veto it.
C’mon, trolls. Defend your emperor! Explain how by vetoing this bill just because it benefits workers in a way he and his corporate cronies don’t like is halping to make us safer.
Just a minute! Let me get a snack and a soft drink and get comfortable. This should be good!

The last thing you want in your security staff are people who are being paid a living wage. Much better to let them make up their salary in some other manner — like taking bribes.
Typical Bushness: try to get everything on the cheap so your rich buddies can make more money.

Now, the goal is for the children to eventually be able to ride with out Daddy holding on to the handle bars and with out training wheels. So, if y’ look at it that way, Bush is really just showing how proud he is and how much confidence he has in us (the children), that is why he is letting go of the bars and leaving us to ride with out training wheels.

The House bill, brought up for debate on Tuesday,
was stalled by Republican amendments designed to
protest the Democrats’ decision not to disclose in the bill
legislators’ favorite spending provisions, or earmarks.
so what’s THAT about?
June 16th, 2007 at 10:12 pm…
Their own rank hypocrisy. They refused to disclose their earmarks when they were running the show. Now, suddenly, this is immoral behavior because they are no longer doing it themselves.
A distraction, katy. Nothing but a distraction. They’re desperate.
June 16th, 2007 at 10:24 pmkaty,

June 16th, 2007 at 10:53 pmFirst an article that completely mischaracterizes what the bill says and what the President would object too, and then a bunch of commentors who never investigate anything to learn the truth. Yeah, if that’s ‘progress’ then I don’t want you folks running this country.

June 16th, 2007 at 11:44 pmFrom the WaPo article
“Perhaps the most hotly contested part of the bill is a requirement that department contractors pay their employees at least the local prevailing wage. The provision, part of broader Democratic efforts to enact legislation being pushed by unions, would allow the president to waive so-called Davis-Bacon restrictions only in times of national emergency.
The House bill also withholds financing for the department’s new personnel management system until litigation with unions and employees is resolved. In early 2005, they filed suit, asserting that the system would give managers undue power to reward, punish and reassign employees.
Republicans failed in an effort to remove that section from the bill. They also objected to restrictions imposed on the $1 billion allocated to constructing a fence along the Mexican border. Before the money could be allocated, under the Democrats’ plan, communities in the area would have to be consulted.
”
I too am pissed that once again the Dems are hiding the pork. I have emailed Jay Inslee demanding disclosure of earmarks.
Why do republicans hate communities?
June 16th, 2007 at 11:47 pmMy email to the Hon. Mr Inslee…
I applaud your vote passing the Homeland Defense appropriation.
June 16th, 2007 at 11:56 pmOne question however, who is responsible for hiding the earmarks contained in this legislation.
The news articles just say “the Democrats”.
If you can shed some light on this, I’d like to know who “the Democrats” responsible for this are.
Let’s make these earmarks visible, accountable and public.
Thanks!
RU, earmarks are standard procedure. I would ask that a$$ why he was hindering the state’s impeachment movement. What he did during the Washington grassroots was so bush league. That guy needs to go.
June 17th, 2007 at 12:01 amJPark, as I understand the issue, earmarks could and should be made public record, not hidden away. I know they’re standard procedure, but why the secrecy?
June 17th, 2007 at 12:08 amI’ve had many an email conversation with Inslee over impeachment, and his argument that it would somehow cause a groundswell of support for Bush is hogwash. But that’s his stance. I’m attending the 1st District Dems meetings this fall to see if we can find someone to run against him in 08.
I absolutely agree. Earmarks should be made public and the lawmaker that introduced it should be attached to it. I am afraid there are only about 30 million people who actually give a d^mn about politics, though. There was one Senator who actually read the Patriot Act before voting on it and that was my man Feingold (I am lucky to have such an incredibly moral Senator). With the majority being morons I don’t think recording earmarks would make a difference.
It is good to see you are working against that toad, Inslee. I wish you the best of luck.

M12, why did you conveniently leave George Bush out of this? It’s his bill and he is the one who desperately wants it passed. I am at a loss as to why the Democrats are supporting it. I support the provisions to allow the immigrants to become citizens. But, all in all this bill is a giant give-away to corporate america. And it will ensure that there will be many more lost jobs for the people who live here. When Microsoft can hire an Engineer from India to work for $12,000 a year when they would have to pay an American $48,000 a year, which do you think Microsoft will do? First we export our jobs to India and now we are importing people from India to do our jobs here.
June 17th, 2007 at 11:36 amBush’s point here is that these dollars are needed to support covert private corporate armies that are operating quietly (with his knowledge and support) around the world in the name of corporate, not US interests. The idea of using taxpayer dollars to support our troops with amour, or their families with food stamps, or our returning vets with adequate health funding to cover expenses relating to their injuries, or the adequate funding of our first responders is simply not a good use of taxpayer dollars and requires his veto. Now, GET BACK IN LINE AND SHUT UP!!!
June 17th, 2007 at 11:39 amReal issue… do we need another 12- 20 million of non english speaking people in the United States.
Just because a person does not speak English, it does not make them any less of a human being. If this truly is, for you, the “real issue”, then I would suggest that you should consider your own xenophobia to be a bigger issue.
And 12-20 million more people (when did the estimate go from 12 million to 20 million, anyway?), would also be paying into the system just like everyone else. It’s not like they might become citizens but the rest of us would still have to totally cover their expenses.
June 17th, 2007 at 5:06 pmLet him veto it…he has no damn credibility.
June 18th, 2007 at 11:12 amBush is nothing but a lying fraud of a leader! How anyone can support that thing is beyond me! Bush and crew use gestapo tactics to get their way! The one they use most frequently was perfected by the chief Nazi propagandist Josef Goebbels with “Tell the people a lie long enough they WILL believe it!” Sound familiar? Anybody who supports this lying piece of s_it is as Un American as they come!
I know the bush happy repukes are out there big time just looking for progressives like me waiting too attack! Go to any message board and print some anti bushie message and you will see what I mean!
It is my opinion that we have a schizophrenic running the country! People who hear voices telling them to do something is Not God as with the bush claiming that God told me to attack Iraq! I remember when all the repukes were claiming bush was the second coming of Jesus Christ! What a bunch of friggin losers!!!
It is also my opinion that the bush managed to steal not one but two presidential elections. Election 2000 was DECIDED by the extreme court! He wasn’t voted in by the voting Americans! Election 2004 it is my opinion that the chairman of diabold electronic voting rigged electronic voting machines with a simple program that miscounted the votes! It has been proven that that could have happened!
He has been quoted on more than one occasion that he would see to it that the bush got a second term! Guess what! Bush got a second term! To believe otherwise would mean that America has more idiots than not and I refuse to believe that!
There were to many inconsistencies with the votes in Ohio and the exits polling didn’t match the results! Repuke thugs the new gestapo were out in force to disenfranchise democratic voters. Claiming many voters were felons and couldn’t vote and the list goes on and on!
I know I’m right but of course can’t prove it.
Oh, and bush’s grand pappy Prescott Bush was convicted of trading with the enemy. He was the chairman of a metals company who made munitions for the NAZI war machine made with forced labor by the Jews! With that kind of tract record how could anyone vote for that lying piece of garbage!
Only in America???

I may be just a dumb, liberal, libertarian, humanistic atheist, but is it really credible that God would tell someone to invade another country? I thought God wanted us to love one another. If you’re into that sort of thing, doesn’t it seem even the teensiest bit more reasonable to believe that it was the Devil who told Bush to do these things, and not God? That would make a lot more sense to me. If I believed in that sort of stuff. Which I don’t.
