NYC firefighters slam Giuliani.

The New York Times has published a review of interviews with more than 50 NYC firefighters and department officers who server under former mayor Rudy Giuliani. “Many firefighters praise his years in office, citing his success in reducing crime and his leadership after the terrorist attacks. Others harbor a resentment for what they describe as his poor treatment of the department before and after Sept. 11.”

Some still speak bitterly about a contract that left firefighters without a raise for two years. Some also say Mr. Giuliani has exaggerated the role he played after the terrorist attacks, casting himself as a hero for political gain. The harshest sentiments stem from Mr. Giuliani’s decision nearly two months after 9/11 to reduce the number of firefighters who were allowed to search for colleagues in the rubble — a move that he partially reversed but that still infuriates many firefighters. [...]

The International Association of Fire Fighters, an umbrella union based in Washington, spoke out against Mr. Giuliani in March. The group is also preparing a short DVD outlining its grievances that it plans to send to fire departments across the country. [...]

Officials with another union, the Uniformed Fire Officers Association, said they planned to work against Mr. Giuliani’s campaign. “I don’t think the person in Nebraska has any idea yet how we feel,” said John J. McDonnell, a battalion chief and president of the association. “He probably assumes that we think he’s great.”

The level of fraud, perfidy, and criminality perpetrated by the Rethuglicans (the entire party, top to bottom), makes it hard for any reasonably responsible person or organization to support them. I’m not surprised that the first responders aren’t supporting Rudy – as they have been up-close-and-personal victims of his political buggery.

I like my candidates being true to who they are and if that means they like dresses, then so be it. Unlike your garden variety troll, I’m not homophobic :)

That being said I am more of a Ron Paul fan. Leave alot to local governments and let the people effected make most of the choices.

I lived in NYC before, during, and after 9/11 – and at all times I LOATHED Rudy.

But TP… why are you only giving the negitive snipets? I mean, I’m glad you left in at least SOMETHING positive with the ““Many firefighters praise his years in office, citing his success…” quote, and as always you link to the full story.

But something seems, I dunno.. dishonest about not putting in a blockquote, ANYTHING positive that was said about him.

Of course, I don’t agree with the positive statements, but still I want to be able to say that TP is fair.

TUNDRA – Your party hates gay people, and are offended by cross dressing (minus the candidate we’re talking about now). So why, if you’re not homophonic, siding with them?

And let’s not forget how many of these “heros” fought for camera time instead of actually helping out.

Let’s also NOT forget that Rudy shipped off the remains from 9/11 to be destroyed. Yes – Rudy DISRUPTED A CRIME SCENE, a crime on a scale which has never been seen before in the US

  9. Tundra says:

Since when did the Libertarian Party ever have a negative stance on Gay rights of any sort?

Ron Paul is definately more of a real conservative that the republican jokers in office.
It’s his racism I cannot stomach.

And dress wearing jokes aside, Rudy’s Kerik/mob connections make me real leary of him. We have had enough of the criminal things going on with Bushco in the WH.

  15. VerbalKint says:

I’m not sure what to make of these firefighters’ complaints, but I am sure that Giuliani has received far too much praise for 9/11. Perhaps what made him look so good then was the fact that Bush was fleeing, hiding, and cowering like a pussy while Rudy was more or less holding his ground.

My original poorly worded post about glad to hear Many firefighters are pleased with him, was supposed to mean that they are the ones he should have been worried about (As opposed to the rest of the country) and if a good number are pleased, that’s good.

Leaving that part out of course was used to see who reads and comprehends vs assume I am a Bush Loving etc and call me anti gay and “your party” type stuff. (Not you of course as we have been around awhile)

  20. veritas says:

Guiliani was the “annointed successor” of Bush – handpicked by the GOP, that’s clear. The fact that he was made to appear the “hero” was part/parcel of the Annointed’s “role” which he continues to play to the hilt. When all is said and done, there are more negative reports about precisely what Guiliani did (more like what he failed to do) so he’s definitely NOT a hero by any stretch of the imagination in the minds of New Yorkers (See Bloomberg/Guiliani poll of NY citizens) or the rest of the country.

Having said that, he doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of ever residing in the White House. Bernie Kerik’s affiliation with him has tarnished what was “supposed to happen” to das annointed one…..

Factor in his complicity and knowledge that Oxycontin was definitely “addictive” when they claimed that it was not – a Board of Directors he currently sits on – and he’s toast.

    …..ttttttthat’s all folks……thufferin’ thuccotash!

Operation Iraqi Freedom, a neo-con lefty cum righty idea, was supposed to free those Muslims from a oppressive secular dictator, remember? Shaha Riza, who probably meant well, also was onboard with freeing the oppressed women in Afghanistan and Iraq. Borks daughter, which is not widely known also sat on the board of AEI and it’s plans of war with Iraq since 1998 or so. This war, freedom operation is not so much about religion as you and the pundits try to make it out to be as some kind of modern day armageddon.

Don’t even get me started on the funding of Reagan ear of “freedom fighters” during the Russian Afghan war which helped to give rise to the extremist problem today. As well the WH plans to arm Iraqi insurgents, another quite questionable tactic. Oil has undeniably played a part in funding this radical extremism.

Joker, I think, seems to be a good moniker for your post as the people here seem to fall into the anti-war category and not the pro-muslim diatribe your dallying on about. This quagmire is/was voted on and for by both the elected Democratic and Republican parties. To say the elected left or the right is pro-muslim or anti-war is disengenous at best.

Lets not forget that this debacle also risks reigniting a cold war with Russia.

Fear of Rudy? Please. I feel that he is simply not up to the task to the enormity of the problems at hand. We need a person skilled in dialogue and a uniter not another ‘fear based’ sky is falling divider beholden to the apocalyptic crowd.

Grant the Democrats are still owned by Corprate America, but they rule better, even when owned than the Republicans do. They seem to keep some sense of their humanity that the Repugs willingly abandon.

  41. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Rudy’s doing well right now in the polls, but that’s meaningless for several reasons. First of all, we’re nowhere near the conventions and there could be others (Fred thompson, at least) who might enter the race. And secondly, if he maintains his lead then he will be the natural target for attacks, and there is so much about him that people outsiode New York don’t know yet. And we’ll make sure they hear it.

Also, for the Republican Party, which swept the Newt into power on a family values platform, to nominate Rudy would be just another example of the rank hypocrisy they emit. He has often been a target of criticism from the right because of his socially left-leaning views. About the only thing about him that appeals to them is his authoritarianism and the myth about what a hero he was on 9/11.

  56. PaulB says:

Why does Rudy believe he has a snowball’s chance in hell to gain the Republican nomination?

    Three reasons:

    1. There’s an amazing amount of hypocrisy among Republican voters. They are far more concerned about Democratic shenanigans than they are about Republican. Rudy is a “good person,” so the fact that his personal life has been a fiasco just doesn’t register. Compare, for example, Rush Limbaugh’s reputation among Republicans against the reality of his self-indulgent and out-of-control personal life.

    2. He’s an authoritarian figure. And Republicans, in general, go apeshit over authoritarian figures. If you watched the debates, you saw the various candidates trying to top each other with how “tough” they would be.

    3. The press is giving him a free pass, both on his personal background and on his “credentials” on national security. Instead, they’re speaking admiringly of “America’s mayor” and just how “tough” and “authentic” he is.

Republicans, more so than Democrats, are still terrified by what happened on 9/11 and are still looking for “daddy” to keep them safe. It’s what keeps so many of them still in Bush’s corner, despite the manifest failures of his policies.

What’s interesting about the campaigning thus far is what has not happened: everyone who has watched Rudy for years keeps expecting him to have one of his patented meltdowns. He has a (justifiable) reputation for being short-tempered and arrogant. Thus far, though, the long-expected blowup has just not happened.

So, unfortunately, Rudy is probably justified in thinking that he has both a chance at the Republican nomination and a real shot at the presidency.

  90. HBTDad says:

I was in the O.E.M. when Gulianani found out how dirty the site really was and the level of hazmat involved.

His first words where- “It will ruin the economy” not “we have to evacuate the population”. All else follows from there. He is not someone we want to govern the “people” of this country. When those who knew advised to evacuate the civilian population of lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, the next word from his mouth where “We can’t, they will loot, and riot and kill each other”. He had less faith in the people of NYC then all of us. The people of New York are at their finest when the world is falling apart.

This is not a man we want in any office; let alone the highest. The safety of the people of New York was never his priority, just there mony.
