In his latest ABC News podcast, former senator Fred Thompson suggests that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) criticized outgoing Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Peter Pace last week to appeal to “fringe” anti-American elements “who think the 9/11 attacks were an inside job.”
Reid “made his statement about General Pace on a conference call with fringe elements of the blogosphere who think we’re the bad guys,” Thompson says. “Whether he means to or not, he’s encouraging our enemies to believe that they are winning the critical war of will.”
Thompson also compares 9/11 conspiracy theories to claims that the war in Iraq was a “sinister Republican plot.” He says, “Reid has led the attack on the administration, with Nancy Pelosi, charging it lied and tricked America into supporting the war.” Thompson claims that “multiple hearings and investigations into pre-war intelligence findings” have “debunked this paranoid myth.”
Thompson’s attempt to link Reid to conspiracy theorists is completely baseless. Thompson also gets his facts wrong. In fact, multiple hearings and investigations have conclusively shown that intelligence was manipulated to send this country into war. Among many examples:
– The Pentagon’s inspector general found that former Undersecretary of Defense Doug Feith developed, produced, and disseminated “alternative intelligence assessments” to falsely claim that a relationship existed between Iraq and al Qaeda.
– The White House set up intelligence stovepipes to “get information they wanted directly to the top leadership.” Vice President Cheney and company relied on information provided by the Iraqi National Congress, an exile group headed by Ahmad Chalabi. “Chalabi’s defector reports were…flowing from the Pentagon directly to the Vice-President’s office, and then on to the President, with little prior evaluation by intelligence professionals.” State Dept. intelligence expert Greg Thielmann said that prior to the Iraq war that “garbage was being shoved straight to the President.”
UPDATE: Bob Geiger, one of the bloggers on Reid’s conference call, responds to Thompson HERE.
Transcript:
Well, you’ve heard by now that Senate leader Harry Reid insulted one of this country’s brightest military minds, Marine Corps General Peter Pace — calling him “incompetent.” Let me take a few moments to put this in context.
First, Harry Reid voted for the war, like a majority of our legislators. America decided as a nation to free Iraq and the region from Saddam Hussein’s tyranny. I have friends, both Democrat and Republican, who questioned the decision at the time, but the Republic made a commitment based on constitutional and democratic procedures. So they are now a hundred percent committed to moving forward in a way that’s best for our country. None of them, by the way, believe surrendering to the forces of terror in Iraq is what’s best for our country.
Harry Reid, though, has taken a different route. He made his statement about General Pace on a conference call with fringe elements of the blogosphere who think we’re the bad guys. This is a place where even those who think the 9/11 attacks were an inside job find a home.
And why shouldn’t they think that? Reid has led the attack on the administration, with Nancy Pelosi, charging it lied and tricked America into supporting the war. Ignoring multiple hearings and investigations into pre-war intelligence findings that have debunked this paranoid myth, they accuse an entire administration of conspiracy to trick us into a war.
I suppose that’s easier for some than admitting that they’ve flip flopped — but the fact that Reid says this sinister Republican plot is going to help him elect more Democrats ought to be raising a few flags. Saying General Pace is incompetent doesn’t even rank near the top of his bizarre statements.
How could anyone possibly believe, as Reid charges, that our commanding general in Iraq, David Petraeus, is out of touch with what’s going on. Surely someone in Reid’s position would know that Petraeus is briefed daily on all aspects of Iraq — from civil to military. Surely he has to know that Petraeus is a true warrior scholar who literally wrote the Army’s book on counterinsurgency warfare.
But Reid’s comments are not meant for logical analysis. He proclaimed the war lost some time ago, and the surge as a failure even before the additional troops were on the ground. The problem is that every one of Reid’s comments I’ve noted here has also been reported gleefully by Al Jazeera and other anti-American media. Whether he means to or not, he’s encouraging our enemies to believe that they are winning the critical war of will.
“a conference call with fringe elements of the blogosphere”
is he referring to l.g.f.?

Dang. “Law and Order” Fred isn’t even officially IN the race yet, and he’s already so bereft of ideas that he has to resort to this? Republicans are well and truly politically bankrupt.
June 19th, 2007 at 1:03 pmWow, it’s true. Fred Thompson IS lazy.
June 19th, 2007 at 1:05 pmSo how do all the 9/11 “Troofers” here at TP feel about Thompson linking you all to Harry Reid?
June 19th, 2007 at 1:05 pmThe administration either lied about the war, or they are astoundingly incompetent, or both. There really isn’t another option.
June 19th, 2007 at 1:05 pmAll the repubs will utilize the Rovian practice of putting out whatever they think their supporters want to hear and will confuse non-supporters regardless of the truthfulness. The repubs control the press in the country and any retraction or “correction” will be found on page 87 of the want ads, several weeks later.
June 19th, 2007 at 1:07 pmBesides being lazy Fred Thompson is showing a real talent for recklessness. Maybe the two traits go together.
June 19th, 2007 at 1:07 pmBetter Fred than dead!!! Thompson 2008!!
June 19th, 2007 at 1:08 pmTP seems to have a problem with Thompsons’ criticism of Reids’ feeding the frenzy of the 9/11 “conspiracy wack” “fringe-freaks” who post here and elsewhere. Why? Al Jezeera appreciates the new material Reid provides. Harry Reid is simply whipping up the basest of the lib political base - Reid is a great gift to conservatives. Thanks Harry!!
June 19th, 2007 at 1:08 pmhere’s shaking my fringe at ya, Fred….
June 19th, 2007 at 1:08 pmNow this guy running for pres. worries me…My reason for thinking this is because he is so totaly reich winged and on the TV screen for all the old reganites to look up to..Never mind he is just an actor, that’s all it takes for the rovian nut bag’s to get behind him and steal another election..Another day in bull shit bush bizarro world….Blessings
June 19th, 2007 at 1:08 pmI agree PB.
And either way they shouldn’t be running things.
June 19th, 2007 at 1:09 pmwhether it’s a conspiracy or not isn’t the point. The fact remains - American aggression and militarism over the last 5+ decades have encouraged and incited hatred and violence against the United States.
It’s policy that’s the problem, and it’s policy that needs to be changed.
Call that Blame America - I don’t care. It’s the truth.
We need to change course, now.

June 19th, 2007 at 1:17 pmHey, Venus, I’ve asked you before to reconcile the Official Story with the facts. You’ve continually begged the question. Since I’m not studying for the Bar this summer, I’ve spent some time reading the 9/11 Commission report.
I found this interesting:
9/11 Commission report:
Between 9:34 and 9:30, the Cleveland controller observed United 93 climbing to 40,700 feet and immediately moved several aircraft out its way.
At 9:32, a hijacker, probably Jarrah, made or attempted to make the following announcement to the passengers of Flight 93: “Ladies and Gentlemen: Here the captain, please sit down keep remaining sitting. We have a bomb on board. So, sit.†the flight data recorder (also recovered) indicates that Jarrah then instructed the plane’s autopilot to turn the aircraft around and head east.
The cockpit voice recorder data indicate that a woman, most likely a flight attendant, was being held captive in the cockpit. She struggled with one of the hijackers who killed or otherwise silenced her.
Shortly thereafter, the passengers and flight crew began a series of calls from GTE airphones and cellular phones. These calls between family, friends, and colleagues took place until the end of the flight and provided those on the ground with firsthand accounts. They enabled the passengers to gain critical information, including the news that two aircraft had slammed into the World Trade Center.
*****
In other words, according to the Official Story, Flight 93 was at 40,700 feet elevation when the cell phone calls were made.
The technology to make cell phone calls possible from 40,000′ did not exist in commercial aircraft in 2001.
The so-called cell phone calls from Flight 93 are a HOAX.

June 19th, 2007 at 1:21 pmVirus likes the idea of a Kucinich/Thompson debate eh? Hmmm.
I suppose it might be somewhat interesting. Thompson would parrot all of the neocon talking points and use the debate to smear his opponents and Kucinich would lay out the sanity of a plan for peace as opposed to all war all the time.
Probably be surreal.
June 19th, 2007 at 1:23 pmFed Thompson never touched pork he didn’t like.
June 19th, 2007 at 1:23 pmThompson needs to be dealt with because he lives up to the Republican Television idea of Presidential qualifications. The Republicans merely look for talking head to front for the corporate interests of the party. Bush played the roll of the good ole country boy while really being a spoiled rich child without brains, experience or common sense. Thompson played president and tough prosecutor. (He also fits that common man image - remember his rented pickup truck). As Matthews notes - he seems made for the role. Guilliani - has a high Q factor from being on TV as mayor of NY. (Of course New Yorkers hate him for his incompetence.) McConnell - same pretty boy. The Republicans are all about form without substance. They need to be ridiculed as such. They need to be called out for helping the terrorists do the one thing that no other force has been able to do - pin the US down in a protracted and unwinnable situation in Iraq where it has been able to drain the US Treasury Department, the US Military and destroy our public image. These fools are doing Al Quaeda’s bidding, not Democrats.

We can not afford another Republican in the White House. We just have to take our Country back. We need to put impeachment back on the table soon before Old Bush and Cheney invades Iran.

June 19th, 2007 at 1:24 pm“But Fred, I think our enemies will welcome a Department of Peace - afterall, they want to live in a safe environment and provide for their families….if they don’t encourage Ahmed, Jr. to take the easy way out and become a suicide bomber. The fact they want Israel and the US gone is just a little cultural misunderstanding. They want their daughters to be educated…..oh, I forgot….”
Thompson should be talking about his part in Watergate as he was a major player and knows how to cover up GOP criminal acts. Now as for 9/11 everyone knows the memo Connie spoke about as Bush went on vacation. The flights that allow the Bin Liden family to leave without being questioned. All the White House officials changed their flight plans on that day. More information has come out that the White House knew of the attack but used it to illegally invade Iraq for oil. Thompson should look at his part in the famous Watergate case as his criminal acts can come back to bit him in the butt. I hope he doesn’t give up his day job because he will need it.
June 19th, 2007 at 1:25 pmThompson has obviously not read a newspaper or a politically-oriented book for years; there is no other explanation for his profound ignorance. No, Old Harry did not trick me. I did alot of reseach on 9/11 and came to the conclusion that this was an inside job. Besides the real reason we went into Iraq was OIL and to make Old Bushies buddies richer.
There is nothing you can say that would change my mind so don’t waste your time.
June 19th, 2007 at 1:48 pmWonder how the trolls are dealing with all this confusing information: First they are to back McCain…no no wait, now it’s Mitt the Mormon Choir Boy…….Oops, now it’s RUDEEE. DAMN! Now they throw Freddy Flintsone at us, this is getting hard to swallow, I mean follow.
PULEEZE Daddy Rove, make this easier for me!!!! I get so confused!!
June 19th, 2007 at 1:49 pmRead David Ray Griffin’s books and you’ll walk away with knowledge.
Open your mind at least 30%. Have an open minds. The layers of denial are so deep. People don’t want to believe that their own gov’t could actually KILL them to pursue a foreign policy (reckless) that they obviously profit by. Through the years I have gone through stages. It’s so hard to accept the incompetence theory. That would mean that the ENTIRE day took place because of incompetence. I also cannot subscribe to the Let it Happen On Purpose theory. That’s a cop-out.
I finally, in 2005, came to the belief that 9/11 was a sel-inflicted wound.
Have an open mind. And read David Ray Griffin’s books.

“The technology to make cell phone calls possible from 40,000′ did not exist in commercial aircraft in 2001.”
The GTE airfones on board the aircraft don’t work the same way a regular cell phone works. This is why you aren’t allowed to use a cell phone in flight. The GTE airfones uses an internal highpower transmitter on the plane. Of course the GTE Airfones work at cruising altitude. BTW cell phone calls were possible in 2001. I know because I have sent text messages while flying even before 2001.
“The so-called cell phone calls from Flight 93 are a HOAX.”
So all of those family members of the those victims are lying?

thanks. i’m beginning to get a clearer picture as to why those two are in their 20s but not in the military.
June 19th, 2007 at 1:53 pmI really think it’s about having an open mind. And gathering the facts. So many events of the day do not add up. Why was on the passports of the “terrorists” clearly found in the rubble of the Trade Towers? Why was there a military standown? Why did the buildings fall at free-fall speed? Why were there put options on the airlines the day before the attacks? I could go on and on.
I am glad I am aware and awake. It took me 4 years. Like I said. I went through stages. But, I am glad I arrived where I did.
Didn’t we learn anything from Operation Northwoods? Didn’t we learn anything from The Gulf of Tonkin?

So, Fred Thompson is giving a speech about patriotism as though it was from the Saving Private Ryan script. These lackeys use misdirection time and again. The citizens have spoken and 88% of them surveyed want Bush & Co. OUT OF OFFICE NOW. 9-11 is a completely different animal! Fred Thompson will make a poor President since he intends for the people to fear the government. He wants to extend the Corporate Plutocracy since it allows him to attain wealth and power! These are all liars (actors) and lawyers (liars) spreading more FUD to create more rifts in the general population!
Hey hey ho ho this corrupt government has got to go! Hey hey ho ho this corrupt government has got to go! Hey hey ho ho this corrupt government has got to go!
June 19th, 2007 at 2:04 pmWas Ron Paul Behind 9/11?
I notice some Ron Paul supporters think the reason we make fun of Ron Paul is because we’re threatened of his extreme political relevance. Of course, I tease chimps at the zoo, but that doesn’t mean I’m contemplating voting for them.
Then again, I am threatened by the possibility of monkeys doing some sort of political takeover… while I don’t fear any such thing with Ron Paul.

I’ve already got a clear picture as to why liberals hate the all-volunteer military that’s in place, yet support the policy of a draft to make an even bigger military for them hate.
Liberals hate the military, and your one them. Please, explain to me why someone should have to answer to you - whether on count of physical condition, academic or career pursuance, etc. - when you hate the military so much? At any rate, liberals don’t appreciate a good defense, so you don’t have much credibility to rant. This is an all volunteer military, nobody’s forcing anybody to sign-up, neither should they. If I received my draft ticket and dodged, then maybe you could complain. Even if I could get out there and serve my country, you’d still be complaining like your fellow yawping pack of Dumpcrats.
June 19th, 2007 at 2:06 pmKay - the facts you “cite” are not facts but suppositions and circumstantial evidence. The theory of why such towers fell was well explained on the “History” channel by architects and engineers. (The History Channel is great for people like me who are NOT architects and engineers.) The truth is…your mind is OPEN to believing the worst about the US and this administration. Go back to theory of the dancing Israelis - where did that come from?
But good news.…AlJezeera is renewing your subscription with the special “tool” discount - beginning next month, you will only be charged 50%!!

Awww, Hairy, Greenland was never green, it was only named that so more settlers would come. See the following: “The name “Greenland” comes from Scandinavian settlers. In the Icelandic sagas, it is said that Erik the Red was exiled from Iceland for murder. He, along with his extended family and thralls, set out in ships to find the land that was rumoured to be to the northwest. After settling there, he named the land Grønland (”Greenland”), possibly in order to attract more people to settle there.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenland#History

June 19th, 2007 at 3:01 pmHere they are
1993
Feb. 26, New York City: bomb exploded in basement garage of World Trade Center, killing 6 and injuring at least 1,040 others. In 1995, militant Islamist Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman and 9 others were convicted of conspiracy charges, and in 1998, Ramzi Yousef, believed to have been the mastermind, was convicted of the bombing. Al-Qaeda involvement is suspected.
1996
June 25, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia: truck bomb exploded outside Khobar Towers military complex, killing 19 American servicemen and injuring hundreds of others. 13 Saudis and a Lebanese, all alleged members of Islamic militant group Hezbollah, were indicted on charges relating to the attack in June 2001.
1998
Aug. 7, Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: truck bombs exploded almost simultaneously near 2 U.S. embassies, killing 224 (213 in Kenya and 11 in Tanzania) and injuring about 4,500. 4 men connected with al-Qaeda 2 of whom had received training at al-Qaeda camps inside Afghanistan, were convicted of the killings in May 2001 and later sentenced to life in prison. A federal grand jury had indicted 22 men in connection with the attacks, including Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden, who remained at large.
2000
Oct. 12, Aden, Yemen: U.S. Navy destroyer USS Cole heavily damaged when a small boat loaded with explosives blew up alongside it. 17 sailors killed. Linked to Osama bin Laden, or members of al-Qaeda terrorist network.
2001
June 19th, 2007 at 3:01 pmSince more than one individual participated in planning the 9/11 attacks, these crimes were, by definition, a conspiracy.

…all the while suggesting clinton was responsible for the 1993 wtc bombing, when he had been in office all of 35 days.
…and suggesting the cole bombing investigation was also supposed to be wrapped up in a nice package by january 2001, four months after it happened. because clearly bush didn’t do anything about it.
so maybe i missed it - sometime in the last six years, bush MUST have caught bin laden.
right?
how long did it take for bush to authorize an investigation into 9/11? what’s that you say? ONLY 411 DAYS?!?
