This morning, during an interview with First Lady Laura Bush, CNN highlighted World Refugee Day and the effect that the war in Iraq has had on the number of refugees around the world. CNN reported Iraqis “who were helping the Americans or even helping their own country” are now targeted and must seek “refuge in other nations, as well as the United States.”
Bush responded saying, “Obviously we’re especially concerned about the Iraqi refugees.” She added, “We welcome many of those refugees, both from Iraq and Afghanistan into the United States.”
Watch it:
The First Lady is greatly exaggerating the administration’s policy. As the Baltimore Sun notes today, “as of May, only 69 Iraqis had entered the United States” this fiscal year. In total, the United States has “resettled fewer than 500 Iraqi refugees” since the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
Meanwhile, the situation in Iraq has become “the world’s fastest-growing refugee crisis.” Syria alone is hosting “1.4 million Iraqi ‘guests’” and Iraqi refugees have become increasingly desperate, some even resorting to prostitution. In total, there are more than two million Iraqi refugees.
Transcript:
BUSH: Sure, in Lebanon and Syria and Jordan, and then here. And I think Americans would be proud to know that we welcome to our country more refugees than all the rest of the nations combined. And obviously we’re especially concerned about the Iraqi refugees, people who are there who are trying to build their government, trying to build a stable country, which is what our goal is, as well, who have left because of terror, really, because of the chance of violence and the fear of violence.
We welcome many of those refugees, both from Iraq and Afghanistan into the United States. We also spend about $80 million a year working with refugees, Iraqi refugees in the camps in Lebanon.

Ah, life in La La Land…
June 20th, 2007 at 3:51 pmHmmm. What was it someone said to Ann Althouse yesterday? Oh yeah, “Lady you are bug f**k crazy. Bug. F**k. Crazy.”

June 20th, 2007 at 3:54 pmAnn Althouse? Isn’t she the one with the yeast infection so bad her vagina looks like an onion ring?
69 is many, if you define many as more then 3, so she isn’t really lying, just well not being honest.
June 20th, 2007 at 3:54 pmYepper, Laura, all 130 Iraqi refugees are happy to have made it to the good old US of A.
June 20th, 2007 at 3:55 pmSyria alone is hosting “1.4 million Iraqi ‘guests’â€
In other words, 1.4 million potential terrorists.
…and that’s exactly how Chimpy & Company wants it. Their military junta would fall apart if there was no one to fight.
June 20th, 2007 at 3:56 pmDid she say “terra”? I knew I was right. The boy Bush is fighting a war on “terra”, our good earth, our only home with his anti environmental appointees.
June 20th, 2007 at 3:57 pm#3 brilliant.
June 20th, 2007 at 3:58 pmI’m waiting for the day that Laura Bush is asked the follow up questions to her very vague, ambiguous answers. She always gets a free pass, as does her husband. CNN used to do real interviews, not puff pieces. They must have gone to the Tim Russert school of vapid interviews. She’s been a disappointment from a woman’s perspective. No backbone.
June 20th, 2007 at 3:59 pmMaybe she’s counting Gitmo.
June 20th, 2007 at 4:00 pmI find it hard to believe that Laura Bush ever qualified to be a school teacher. It appears that her mental capacities are about equal to her husband’s!
June 20th, 2007 at 4:00 pmWe also spend about $80 million a year working with refugees, Iraqi refugees in the camps in Lebanon.
Ooooh…80 million dollars…sounds like a lot, doesn’t it, kids…until you realize that 80 million dollars finances less than eleven hours worth of Iraq Occupation.
June 20th, 2007 at 4:02 pmDid her killing of Michael Douglas come up?
Cold water works best for removing blood.
According to the two-page accident report released Wednesday by the city of Midland, Laura Welch was driving her Chevrolet sedan on a clear night shortly after 8 p.m. on Nov. 6, 1963, when she drove into an intersection and struck a Corvair sedan driven by 17-year-old Michael Douglas.
June 20th, 2007 at 4:03 pmLaura looks very worn and tired these days….I guess all these years of having to play happy married to the worst president in our nations history is starting to take a toll on her…

June 20th, 2007 at 4:21 pmBut, unfortunately, the doc injected directly into her brain
You know…I don’t know shit about brain surgery. So why would I open my mouth and talk about something I know very little about as if I did? I would never have a conversation with someone and bullshit them with statistics and exaggerations that have no basis. What Mrs. Bush is saying here is exactly that…bullshit statistics and exaggerations that have no basis. Do us a favor…act like you’re educated and perhaps learn something about what it is you’ll be talking about and maybe we’ll listen to you. Don’t be like your f#$king husband!
June 20th, 2007 at 4:21 pmWhat drug is she on? She’s trashy and ugly. Yuk.
June 20th, 2007 at 4:22 pmAlthough it was early in the morning, when I prefer not to speak, I was screaming at the television this morning when I heard her outright false statements. She lies as good as the worst of them. Of course, the former Fox host, now with CNN, let the lies go unchallenged.
June 20th, 2007 at 4:24 pmThe Stepford wife is not to be questioned or challenged. She is plastic, she is untouchable.
Apparently Laura has learned how to lie.
We know she’s been lying to herself for all these years, telling herself that beneath all the boozing, belching and warmongering, there lies a good man in George W. Bush.
But now it seems she’s decided to lie to us too, which is not that surprising. After all, she learned from the best.
June 20th, 2007 at 4:25 pmluara is a refuge from the facts.
June 20th, 2007 at 4:26 pmDidn’t Laura kill her high school boyfriend with her car? Yes. Yes, she did.

An excellent point. Maybe she could invite the 69 we’ve invited into this country out of the millions displaced, to one of those state dinners.
After all, they always need more help, and Iraqi’s look like Mexicans… kinda.
June 20th, 2007 at 4:29 pmIf they spent a fraction of the money that is being spent on the war on attacking world poverty, one of the real sources of terrorism, we might accomplish something.
What a lying bitch she is. She has her head so far up her ass she could spit out of her neck.
All they care about is money. Greed and compassion don’t coexist together. Greed is going to desimate this country. We are already at par with what happened during the depression. Virtually no Americans are saving money (we are at the lowest level of saving since the depression), people are massively in debt, Murdoch is looking to buy the WSJ so more lies can go out to those who might invest in stocks (that’s what brought on the crash, giant schemes to swindle people out of their savings).
So few people see what’s going on. More companies are going to temps. Less benefits to most. Less salaries to meet needs.
And the thing that kills me is that so many people who vote republican are the ones being hurt. All those red staters are certainly not in the best of financial situations, yet they think that patriotism means supporting those who are against gay marriage and abortion. Christ, what a collective bunch of dumb $hits we are.
Go do something constructive, Mrs. Bush. Jump off a bridge or something.
AAARRRGGGHHH!!!
June 20th, 2007 at 4:31 pmA Bush lying? I’m shocked!
June 20th, 2007 at 4:33 pmOh come on…
June 20th, 2007 at 4:33 pm500 to her is kinda like a million, or so.
Give her another vodka.
Remember this is the same woman who defended her husband’s stand on funding embryonic stem cell research with the stance that there’s no point in funding the research when we wouldn’t see benefits right away. Geez — following that logic, it was probably a complete waste for Eisenhower to approve funding for space travel in the 50’s and for Jimmy Carter to approve funding for the stealth bomber in the 70’s.
I get the feeling that Laura is dragged out to make stupid comments when the WH wants to give Dubya a rest from that chore.

June 20th, 2007 at 4:37 pmMore of Laura Bush’s Greatest Hits:
“No one suffers more than their President and I do.”
“Many parts of Iraq are stable now. But, of course, what we see on television is the one bombing a day that discourages everybody.”
“I don’t really believe those polls. I travel around the country, I see people, I see their response to my husband, I see their response to me…A lot of people come up to me and say, ‘Stay the course.’”
June 20th, 2007 at 4:38 pmI can just imagine how difficult it must be for PudgeBoy Rover and the rest of the Bush Family Handlers must have in getting Dubya and Laura to focus enough to get the talking points straight.
(Maybe they promise Dubya more beer and Laura another Prozac, if they get it right.)

June 20th, 2007 at 6:01 pmInstead of celebrating Refugee Day, the United States should take a firm stance on ensuring that refugees and those at refguee camps are able to be lifted from poverty. Instead of engaging in a disastrous war that will only serve to displace thousands more people, our gov’t needs to start supporting the Millennium Development Goals to end global poverty as well as finding multi-national ways to ease tensions in the MidEast and Africa. According to the Borgen Project, $340 billion has already been spent on the war. In contrast, just $19 billion annually can end starvation worldwide. Bush celebrated Malaria Awareness Day and now the first lady is speaking out on Refugee Day. Perhaps they should join together to actually do something about the situation.

No.
69.
The 500 represent people we’ve “resettled”, meaning helped to relocate, mostly to other countries. Only 69 Iraqi’s actually were allowed to live here in the US.
In contrast, following the Gulf War, George Bush’s father brought 30,000 here to live.
30,000 compared to 69.
As always, Bush junior is coming up just a little short.
June 20th, 2007 at 6:05 pmEven if it were 500, that still means his father was 29,500 times more humane than George W Bush.
June 20th, 2007 at 6:07 pmThis is the woman Americans say is honest and has high poll numbers. Now that says alot about American people. They will support even an open liar. Laura is the worse example of a woman in this country. She let’s her children become drunks like her husband and is to busy to be a parent and we see the results. I did feel bad for Jenn when she had to go to court alone as her parents were to busy to love/support their daughter. But I did notice the religious groups and the Media forgot about the famous Family values they talk so much about. Let’s not even talk about the twins being kicked out of the country they were vacationing at. Now that’s a first for the US, as what other family member of any President has been kicked out for disorderly conduct. We thought the Hilton parents were bad parents all we have to do is look at George/Laura Bush.

June 20th, 2007 at 6:22 pmWhat’s disgusting is that Wolf let her get away with that and he damn well knows the number is 500. The proper follow up question was for him to ask her, “So you are comfortable that only 500 refugees have been taken in since 2003?” Then watch her eyes glaze over.
June 20th, 2007 at 6:24 pm#83 What’s disgusting is that Wolf let her get away with that and he damn well knows the number is 500. Candyce
But we all know if Wolf had asked that, he would never get another shot at Laura, Darth, Lynn or any of the other BushCo NeoCon Comedians to drool over.
June 20th, 2007 at 6:35 pmI really enjoyed war4sales’ comment for Laura Bush: ..”let them eat cake”. Absolutely on point. The Mr. and Mrs. of the White House are so accustomed to living as kings and queens that they have no true concept of what is happening in the world. Much of it caused by America’s position on the middle east - Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and yes, Israel. The shame of the Bush family and their cohort cannot repay all the carnage and horror they have caused throughout the world. I thought we were a nation which pledged to give a hand up to the impoverished. Our mantra was to supply food and aid. Instead, we are known as the land that thinks we have the power and the right to take what we want, when we want. We do not abide by international agreements, respect, or just plain human decency. Shame on us all for not impeaching the entire White House administration and shunning their spouses who do not stand against these wrongs. We should ‘boo’ the entire lot of them every time they make a public appearance.
June 20th, 2007 at 6:37 pmShe made the bargain - marry the wayward rich boy, stay married and you’ll be taken care of for the rest of your life. The Family must have panicked when she threatened to leave him - I’m guessing there were some serious promises made - but I hope she got it in writing, or they’ll cut her off cold.
I hate this ‘I was a teacher crap’ too - she was an old maid by ’70’s Texas standards (31) when she married him - she quit work and became a kept woman - and hasn’t worked since.
And she supposedly sold the best pot as an undergratuate at SMU.

June 20th, 2007 at 10:38 pmSomehow, as densely stupid as is dumya, and doubtless Laura as well, those here should note that, somehow, these two always make statements that leave an interpretation that makes the statement correct. Here is what she said:
I think Americans would be proud to know that we welcome to our country more refugees than all the rest of the nations combined.
Well, she DOES NOT specifically refer to Iraqi refugees, and if you count the 13 million illegals in our country, it is probably true that the US “welcomes,” used extremely loosely, more refugees than all other countries combined. What I can’t figure out is how, being stupid, they can do this so consistently. Now, the CONTEXT of this remark certainly implies that she refers to Iraqi refugees, but the plain meaning of the words admit the other, and I admit quite fantastic, interpretation.
June 20th, 2007 at 10:57 pmNearly 2.5M Iraqi Refugees Under Age 12.
Tell us how much you’re suffering again, Laura.
June 20th, 2007 at 11:00 pmWith poll number in the 20’s . . . 69 MUST seem like VERY “many” . . . Laura has elevated “useless” to a new height . . . whatta’ maroooon!
and I’ll have piece of that yeller cake . . .
June 20th, 2007 at 11:57 pmWhy doesn’t the press put pressure on these people, challenge them on their ‘facts’. Do these interviewers just interview, do they not do research so that when somebody makes mistakes, or lies, they can retort, and confront them with real numbers. It is really frustrating that a viewer has to go to liberal websites to see any kind of challenge. The challenge should come immediately from the numbskull who is doing the interviewing. When this bullshit is spoken and nobody verifies it, it becomes ‘fact’ in the eyes of many viewers. CNN, Fox, MSNBC - there are no interviews anymore - just political junkets for right wing tossers to promote their ‘facts’.
June 21st, 2007 at 12:27 amIf there wasn’t FOX news would Laura be so disconnected from reality?
June 21st, 2007 at 1:37 amPickles, the Stepford daughter of a multi millionaire father, is simply Paris Hilton on Valium.
June 21st, 2007 at 3:52 am80,000,000 $ per year / 1.4 million Iraqi ‘guests’†and Iraqi refugees = 57.14 $ per refugee and year. Wow, after having bombed their country ad nauseam, and making them flee their country letting back all your possessions, and probably some dead relatives, the USA compensates them with 57.14 $ per person per year?
Guess that no one thinks that Hamas and Al Fatah were born in similiar circumstances, in poor refugee camps.
Your GOP is training the future army of terrorists against the USA.
June 21st, 2007 at 9:15 amWhat is the appeal of this woman anyway!!!!! Who cares what this broad says, does, etc. As far as I’m concerned, she can go back to being a librarian and she can take her worthless, crooked husband with her. Maybe he can check out a book on ethics-it would probably be too difficult for him to read though! And she can send those two party animal daughters to Iraq to give the poor soldiers a break!!!!!
June 21st, 2007 at 10:20 amYou no things are getting bad when the WH trots the person with the most “popularity” to LIE!
June 21st, 2007 at 11:25 amI think you can count on one hand the number of completely accurate statements she’s made during the course of her stay in the White House. Between husband and wife, maybe you’d need two hands. But that’s what you get when you elect a first-family that runs on cliffnotes they peruse during weekends at the ranch instead of doing actual homework.
June 21st, 2007 at 12:06 pmWe have 25 million Mexican refugees, we need more effin peeps? Got damn…
June 21st, 2007 at 12:21 pmOn CBC radio recently there was an interview with the mayor of a small city in Sweden (population about 60,000) which currently hosts over 5,000 refugees from Iraq. He admitted that it was difficult for one town to handle so many refugees but spoke of the national government’s commitment to providing support for relocation, living expenses, and help finding employment. The contrast with policies and attitudes in the U.S. could not have been more striking.
June 21st, 2007 at 12:39 pmRemarkable lack of awareness, remarkable. Even more remarkable is how passive the US population is. Well- less than 600 days to go and then this particular round of psychopaths will be out of office. Watch out who you vote for…
June 21st, 2007 at 1:52 pmI am so worried about the fate of Iraqi refugee’s. Does anyone know of a real charity we can donate to that would help these poor people yet would also not get me slammed into Gitmo as a terrorist supporter? I have already committed the cardinal sin of being an active citizen who writes her representatives and votes, that would get me waterboarded for sure!
June 21st, 2007 at 2:20 pmThe Iraqi Red Crescent is a “sister” organization to the the Red Cross. The Red Crescent has the largest contigent of aid personnel in Iraq. You could check online for a way to donate.
June 21st, 2007 at 2:51 pmOooooh!!! Anyone care to sing the “Lying Sack of Crap” song with me?
You’re a lying sack of crap!
June 21st, 2007 at 3:27 pmYou’re a lying sack of crap!
You’re a lying, scheming
Stinking, nasty
Lying sack of CRAP!!!!!
Please!
It’s Bug F**K insane and Batsh*t crazy.
We must maintain the integrity of our common disregard.
June 21st, 2007 at 5:15 pmOne of the most aggravating things about CNN’s morning show, when I saw Laura Bush making these outrageous statements was the IMMEDIATELY before her was Amanpour’s segment stating that the US had only allowed 10s of Iraqi refugees in. Not 10s of hundreds, not 10s of thousands, but 10s. I am writing a letter to CNN to point out this “balanced” reporting — ha! — to ask them why there is no analysis done between the two segments.
June 22nd, 2007 at 9:28 amI HAVE A “NAUSEATING” VISION OF LAURA AND FRAT BOY GEORGE LYING IN BED AT NIGHT READING (ACTUALLY, JUST LOOKING AT THE PICS) OF THE CHILDRENS BOOK “MY PET GOAT” (GEORGIES FAVORITE)…. FUNNY HOW HISTORY TENDS TO REPEAT ITSELF.
June 22nd, 2007 at 1:38 pmTHINK PROGRESS MISQUOTES LAURA BUSH:
She clearly said, “We will welcome many of those refugees …”
Indeed, the U.S. just announced they will be accepting more Iraqi refugees into the U.S. —> (news story)
Flat-out DISHONESTY from ThinkProgress.
June 22nd, 2007 at 2:33 pmOh give her a break. After all she has to stay in the White House with George, smile in pictures with him and hold his hand when they walk together. That has got to take a toll on her.
I think she’s a very nice person who is in a very ugly family.
June 22nd, 2007 at 5:05 pm“We WILL welcome many of those refugees, both from Iraq and Afghanistan into the United States.â€
I think was the actual quote…. better get it right, as it IS the headline.
June 22nd, 2007 at 6:29 pmLaura must be drinking too. Why the hell didn’t the CNN reporter refute the response? So much for CNN.
