Reopen the investigation of Abu Ghraib.

By Nico Pitney on Jun 20th, 2007 at 8:37 pm

Reopen the investigation of Abu Ghraib.»

McClatchy’s military analyst Joseph Galloway writes:

The president and his men, and Rumsfeld and his, happily put Abu Ghraib behind them and went merrily along knowing that the network of secret CIA prisons where high-value prisoners were subjected to extreme interrogation techniques was still secret.

The examples made of Army Chief of Staff Gen. Eric K. Shinseki and Gen. Taguba weren’t lost on military commanders in the field or at home: If you dare speak truth to power in this administration, your career is toast, and any hopes you have of landing a cushy job in one of the defense industry behemoths are finished.

It’s long past time for Congress to reopen the matter of who’s really responsible for Abu Ghraib and let the chips fall where they may - even if that means they pile up around the retirement home of a former secretary of defense or the gates of the White House itself.

  7. foolme1ns Says:

well if the democrats had any balls they would, but unfortunately we are stuck with the neutered ones who fail miserably to stand by their guns in the face of this criminal White House and then congratulate themselves for nothing while tucking tail and running back up under the porch.

We don’t have a party of the people anymore, we just have the republicans and the “republican lites”. That is what having a democratic consultant will do for you. They will tear the balls right off of any democrat in office or trying to get into office.

So as with the Gonzales hearings where we get a first hand vision of how corrupt this White House IS, nothing will be done, because if you’re looking for the democrats to do something, boy have you picked the wrong horse, and the wrong group of horses asses.

When Nancy “we won’t give George Bush a blank check” Pelosi puts impeachment back on the table, then, maybe then, just maybe, I might believe something will be done about these blatant criminals. But as long as impeachment is off the table NOTHING, repeat NOTHING is going to be done to this criminal administration!!!!!

    They have sold us out.

I really hate to agree with you but you hit the nail on the head with your comments. As soon as January 2007 rolled by with Pelosi’s “impeachment is off the table,” I was floored. That meant, to Pelosi, that Bush is above the law.

  21. FOX Says:

In January 2002 Bush declared that al Qaeda and Taliban suspects were a new kind of enemy, and he reversed the military’s order for Article 5 hearings by issuing an executive order establishing that all detainees in U.S. custody in Afghanistan were in one way or another associated with al Qaeda or the Taliban, and thus “enemy combatants.” The executive order also declared that detained al Qaeda suspects weren’t covered by any aspect of the Geneva Conventions.

Among the data revealed by the REPORT ON GUANTANAMO DETAINEES:
    1. Fifty-five percent (55%) of the detainees are not determined to have committed any hostile acts against the United States or its coalition allies.

    2. Only 8% of the detainees were characterized as al Qaeda fighters. Of the remaining detainees, 40% have no definitive connection with al Qaeda at all and 18% are have no definitive
affiliation with either al Qaeda or the Taliban.

    3. The Government has detained numerous persons based on mere affiliations with a large number of groups that in fact, are not on the Department of Homeland Security terrorist watchlist. Moreover, the nexus between such a detainee and such organizations varies considerably. Eight percent are detained because they are deemed “fighters for;” 30% considered “members of;” a large majority – 60% — are detained merely because they are “associated with” a group or groups the Government asserts are terrorist organizations. For 2% of the prisoners their nexus to any terrorist group is unidentified.

    4. Only 5% of the detainees were captured by United States forces. 86% of the detainees were arrested by either Pakistan or the Northern Alliance and turned over to United States custody. This 86% of the detainees captured by Pakistan or the Northern Alliance were handed over to the United States at a time in which the United States offered large bounties for capture of suspected
    enemies.

    5. Finally, the population of persons deemed not to be enemy combatants – mostly Uighers – are in fact accused of more serious allegations than a great many persons still deemed to be enemy combatants.

So why does the red cross say about 90 percent of them are just people turned in for money?

My guess. The elite ruling class will always procure to perpetuate themselves in power. Dems and Reps are two faces of the same coin: people in power. Now, if they execute the law as it should be done they would have to hang some people other than Saddam, but the thing is that, somewhere in the future, they could be the next ones. Thats is not a good thing. Ruling class will always protect their interests, even if it means to put in jail some middle size fishes. And of course, some people will go to jail, but thats only a PR display to put people at ease. Do you imagine what would happen if people start pressing on delicate issues? Let me introduce you to: martial law. When people gets too close to real democracy, the army goes into the streets. I know, I lived in Argentina and Chile and thats what happened there.

The media forgot to tell Americans Bush has hired thousands of contract soldiers to kill and torture. Our military troops were just following orders and for that they were put in jail for following the orders of Rummy. Save the ink and more on. The sad thing is that we assume that armed conflicts are motivated by religious goals. Thats simply wrong. Thats the flavor, but the content, as it has been proven every single time, is an economic goal. We speak about the clashes of civilization and religion. Thats BS.

For example, the jihadist case if it is really, really important to kill infidels, why Al-Sadr doesnt collabaorate to this goal by being the first one to do a suicide bombing? mmmm??? Anyone??? Because the whole Allah/Jesus stuff is crap. Now, the “western” case, if it is really a fight for survival, as it has been named by several supporters in the govt like GWB, why is he not fighting in the frontlines? I mean, I would fight to death if my family´s survival was on jeopardy. Everything is crap and propaganda, from both sides, in order to send the poor uneducated minions towards the path the ruling class (western and arab) wants.

Would a person (not me, in this case) who was too old, too young or of a handicapped nature to serve in the military be allowed to support the war? Would these be the ONLY people who can support it?

  82. Juan C Says:

It is called consequence. You have to be consequent with your ideas, otherwise you are hypocrite.

  83. The Oracle Says:

And to think, just over fifty years ago, Gen. MacArthur was fired because he wanted to drop some nukes on the Red Chinese, which would have precipitated, I presume, World War III, possiblyproviding an exclamation point to World War II, which had only ended less than ten years earlier.

So, in a perverse twist of Truman, George W. Bush fires one general, Gen. Shinseki, who called for too many troops (according to Rumsfeld) in preparation for our troops invading another country, and fires another general, Gen. Taguba, who was ordered to get to the bottom of the Abu Ghraib “torture” scandal, only to do too good a job, while having one hand tied behind his back, because he was not allowed to investigate who in the White House was actually responsible for the “torture” directives that led to the scandal.

In other words, while Gen. MacArthur was canned for being a little bit overzealous and slightly insubordinate, Gen.’s Shinseki and Taguba were fired for just doing their job, efficiently and competently, obeying orders to prepare for war based on one’s military expertise and sanity (Gen. Shinseki) or conducting an investigation into Geneva Convention violations at a White House-controlled prison in Iraq (Gen. Taguba).

One thing one can say, Bush is definitely no Truman, or Eisehnower, or FDR, or Reagan, or JFK, or…well, about any previous president who had some honesty, some integrity, some compassion and some sanity.

  87. Death Spiral Says:

Ahhh, I see. So support must have consequence, not only in this venue but presumably in all? No opinion allowed unless you face a direct consequence, huh.

When I expect the local police to shut down a meth-lab I must first place myself at the head of the team, swinging the breaching hammer to open the door? What a hypocrite I must be for expecting others to face danger while I simply watch from the safety of my house.

    But its also ground breaking.

This has got to be the first TV show ever dedicated to humilating a sitting President, and his entire family.

Last week, it showed Barbara Bush using little Dick Cheney as a dildo, and he ended up getting sucked up inside of her.

I am not making this up.

In a speech on July 7, Hersh confirmed rumors that children and women were raped on camera at Abu Ghraib prison. His remarks, made during an address before the American Civil Liberties Union, implied that he had personally seen some of the footage.

“And basically what happened is that those women who were arrested with young boys, children, in cases that have been [video] recorded, the boys were sodomized, with the cameras rolling,” Hersh told the audience in San Francisco, “and the worst above all of them is the soundtrack of the boys shrieking.”

Bin Laden may have arranged family’s US exit: FBI docs

Osama bin Laden may have chartered a plane that carried his family members and Saudi nationals out of the United States after the September 11, 2001 attacks, said FBI documents released Wednesday.

The papers, obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, were made public by Judicial Watch, a Washington-based group that investigates government corruption.

One FBI document referred to a Ryan Air 727 airplane that departed Los Angeles International Airport on September 19, 2001, and was said to have carried Saudi nationals out of the United States.

“The plane was chartered either by the Saudi Arabian royal family or Osama bin Laden,” according to the document, which was among 224 pages posted online.

The flight made stops in Orlando, Florida; Washington, DC; and Boston, Massachusetts and eventually left its passengers in Paris the following day.

In all, the documents detail six flights between September 14 and September 24 that evacuated Saudi nationals and bin Laden family members, Judicial Watch said in a statement.

“Incredibly, not a single Saudi national nor any of the bin Laden family members possessed any information of investigative value,” Judicial Watch said.

“These documents contain numerous errors and inconsistencies which call to question the thoroughness of the FBI’s investigation of the Saudi flights.

“For example, on one document, the FBI claims to have interviewed 20 of 23 passengers on the Ryan International Airlines flight … on another document the FBI claims to have interviewed 15 to 22 passengers on the same flight.”

Asked about the documents’ assertion that either bin Laden or the Saudi royals ordered the flight, an FBI spokesman said the information was inaccurate.

“There is no new information here. Osama bin Laden did not charter a flight out of the US,” FBI special agent Richard Kolko said.

“This is just an inflammatory headline by Judicial Watch to catch people’s attention. This was thoroughly investigated by the FBI.”

Kolko pointed to the 9-11 Commission Report, which was the book-length result of an official probe into the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington that killed nearly 3,000 people.

“No political intervention was found. And most important, the FBI conducted a satisfactory screening of Saudi nationals that left on chartered flights. This is all available in the report,” Kolko said.

On the issue of flights of Saudi nationals leaving the United States, the 9-11 report said: “We found no evidence of political intervention” to facilitate the departure of Saudi nationals.

The commission also said: “Our own independent review of the Saudi nationals involved confirms that no one with known links to terrorism departed on these flights.”

Meredith Diliberto, an attorney with Judicial Watch, said that her group had seen a first version of the documents in 2005, although the FBI had heavily redacted the texts to black out names, including all references to bin Laden.

Nevertheless, unedited footnotes in the texts allowed lawyers to determine that bin Laden’s name had been redacted. They pressed the issue in court and in November 2006, the FBI was ordered to re-release the documents.

Diliberto said mention that “either” bin Laden or Saudi royals had chartered the flight “really threw us for a loop.”

“When you combine that with some of the family members not being interviewed, we found it very disturbing.”

Soldier in Iraq Resists the Occupation

    Nonviolent Resistance

On June 19, 26 year old SPC Eli Israel put himself at great personal risk by making the courageous decision to refuse further participation in the U.S. occupation of Iraq. Eli told his commanding officer and sergeants that he will no longer be a combatant in this illegal, unjustified war. Eli believes that the U.S. government used the attacks of September 11, 2001 as a pretense to invade Iraq and that “we are now violating the people of this country (Iraq) in ways that we would never accept on our own soil.” Eli is stationed at Camp Victory in Baghdad with JVB Bravo Company, 1-149 Infantry of the Kentucky Army National Guard. This soldier’s decision to refuse orders puts him at great risk, especially because he is in Iraq, isolated from legal assistance and other support. The following is a message that Eli sent yesterday to a friend back home:

“I have told them that I will no longer play a ‘combat role’ in this conflict or ‘protect corporate representatives,’ and they have taken this as ‘violating a direct order.’ I may be in jail or worse in the next 24 hours.

Please rally whoever you can, call whoever you can, bring as much attention to this as you can. I have no doubt that the military will bury me and hide the whole situation if they can. I’m in big trouble. I’m in the middle of Iraq, surrounded by people who are not on my side. Please help me. Please contact whoever you can, and tell them who I am, so I don’t ‘disappear.’”

Eli is taking an incredible risk by refusing orders in Iraq and will most likely be court martialed. Please help him by contacting his Senator and requesting that he take any steps necessary to support and protect this soldier and ensure that the Army respects his rights and does not illegally retaliate against him.

  160. Kate Henry Says:

You gotta love McClatchy news. It’s the only news organization that comes close to doing any investigative reporting and who speaks the truth. Keep up the good work guys.

So Rumsfeldt cooks up this scheme to fool the world that he wasnt torturing people in AG, then he decides to allow cameras inside such a sensitive area? Makes sense…uh yeah…makes sense. Achoo!

I doubt that those pictures were “official” pictures. They were pictures that the soldiers took with their personal cameras as “souvenirs”. I don’t think that they “allowed” the cameras to be there. But, I bet after the scandal broke, the military started searching the soldiers working at AG before they went on duty.

So, back to the drawing board for you. Perhaps you can come up with a more intelligent argument to defend the indefensible.

  161. Expat Says:

More investigations? For what? The current hearings have done absolutely nothing to hold this Administration accountable. Both Conyers and Leahy’s hearings have been a bust. They refuse to get tough and continue to play nice which plays into the hands of the regime and demonstrates the Dems incompetence.

  162. Craig Mack Says:

Irina, the army would not be taking “illegal” action against this young man by court martialing him. If he violates the UCMJ (still the military guide, although antiquated), he is still subject to punishment under it’s law. He signed the contract, he knows this. Not doubting his intentions, nor am I calling him any bad names, but if he makes this bed, he must lie in it.
