Today, President Bush issued the third veto of his presidency on legislation expanding funding for embryonic stem cell research, which recently passed Congress with a bipartisan, overwhelming majority.
Faced with the opposition of nearly two-thirds of Americans, White House spokesperson Tony Snow today attempted to spin the veto as a positive development. Snow claimed that Bush has a “unique and unprecedented role” in supporting stem cell research, and attacked critics for “misstating” the administration’s policies, claiming that Bush was in fact “putting science before ideology.”
In an attempt to drum up support for less potent alternatives to embryonic stem cell research, Snow falsely characterized the science behind stem cell research, claiming scientists “are not even entirely sure about what the possible benefits of embryonic stem cells [are].” Watch it:
Snow’s claim doesn’t pass the laugh test. Contrary to what Snow says, Bush has held a backwards and overly ideological perspective on scientific research. In 2001, Bush neutered the ability of scientists to engage in stem cell research by curbing funding for new embryonic lines. In 2006, he vetoed legislation lifting those restrictions. Even Bush’s top scientists have criticized him for these actions.
Currently, “not a single scientist who is pursuing research on any kind of cell has said that research involving embryonic stem cells should stop.” And scientists have seen potential treatments from embryonic stem cell research for a variety of ailments.
The only thing stopping federally-funded stem cell research from progressing is the White House’s insistence on putting right-wing ideology ahead of science.
UPDATE: More on the administration’s misinformation here and here.
Transcript:
QUESTION: But is it a way to try to, kind of, counter critics who are…
SNOW: No, because I think what happens is the critics quite often who make those complaints are, whether deliberately or not, misstating the nature of the president’s commitment to stem cell research and paying little or no heed or giving no credit to the president’s unique and unprecedented role in supporting stem cell research.
QUESTION: Here’s one of these critics today, Tony. Senator Clinton said: This is just one example of how the president puts ideology before science, politics before the needs of our families, just one more example of how out of touch with reality he and his party have become.
SNOW: Boy, that sounds awfully general.
You want to read that again for me?
QUESTION: This is just one example of how the president puts ideology before science…
SNOW: OK, stop right there. This actually is the president putting science before ideology.
…
QUESTION: So are you suggesting there’s a scientific basis for believing these alternatives might be more advantageous than the embryonic stem cell…
SNOW: As I said, what you hear from scientists is it’s — they’re not entirely sure. In fact, they’re not even entirely sure about what the possible benefits of embryonic stem cells is, because, again, they’re notoriously difficult to control.
I know you mean well, but publishing this fool’s lies may be the only place they get read.
June 20th, 2007 at 6:24 pmHUHHHHHHHH?????????? Tony, Do you REALLY believe this sh!t?? If so, you gotta get back to your Doc and have him cut back on the Chemo dosage………..
June 20th, 2007 at 6:25 pmIf science found a way to use stem cells, which can now be extracted without an embryo, and it cured cancer would you Tony be for it?
Yes I know your job is to push current policy.
And Tony, really my friend. You should consider taking time off and enjoying your family. I have seen all to many people die from cancer. Take it easy, till the garden, enjoy life, relax. (and I don’t mean this politically)

If Republicans step into party line and the over-ride attempt fails then it is just another case to hold against them come election time. After all, Republicans CLAIM they are distancing themselves from Bush yet continue to act like slaves. It’s hard for them to keep making that claim if they continuously act as Bush enablers.

The irony here, is that while many of the original founding fathers “were” chrisitians, they were equally committed to keep Christianity out of their fledgling government.
Still smarting from the pious hand of the holy inquisitor courtesy the mother church at England no doubt.

“American Christian Pharisees”.
Thats exactly what they are. The RNC is its own Sanhedrin, full of scribes, preists, elders, Saducees and Pharisees, carefully leading us all down to hell. The last thing our founding fathers wanted was the introduction of more religious control over the masses by a corrupt and interwined theocracy, nor the idiocracy the RNC has turned it into today.

Lol, I hate to be the corrector (nobody likes the corrector) but I think you’re merging parables. It looks like you’ve combined the parable of the Talents with the parable of the Prodigal Son.
With the talents, theres the guy who was given only one, and who buried his one, and returned it to his master as it was given to him. There was also the guy who was given 2 talents, and returned to his master 4, and the guy who was given 5, and returned 10.
It was the guy who buried his one talent that got his ass kicked in the end.

How about this: God gave us all those extra stem cells because He loves us and wants us to be healthy.
Once upon a time, some 50 years ago, before I became a Secular Humanist I would have said:
Yes, my kind of God would want mankind to use all those extra stem cells to find cures for sickness and disease. My kind of God is all love without hate (known mostly as justice), and His all powerful understanding of pain and resultant empathy would drive Him to cheer any advance in the eradication of mortal pain.
Today, for me, there is no god, so I would say the same thing leaving god out of the equation.
June 20th, 2007 at 9:22 pmWhich if you examine the neocons and Bush, and their actions, like vetoing Stem Cell research, is exactly what they are doing with their brains.
For these type of fundamentalist Christians, (a misnomer to be sure) the thinkings already been done.
They effectively “bury” their brains, and return them, as given to them, childish, empty and devoid of wisdom or hard earned experience.
Just simplistic ideas gotten second hand, from someone who knows as little as themselves.

No, I preach that “reality†and “fantasy†(if you mean the philosophical doctrines of Realism and Idealism) are epistemologically equal, and that both are metaphysical doctrines, and hence, both are meaningless.

Personally, I tend to stay away from spriitual absolutes with regards to doctrine or belief.
After all, one could easily say you can no more prove there is no God, as a Christian or Muslim could prove their is one.
Now I am not saying either way. To each his own. I will say this though.
If I ever started a church, we wouldn’t have too many answers, but we’d have some damn good questions.
Yes, I agree on all of the above. Regarding “spriitual absolutes,” I choose to ignore the whole question of spirit, soul, god and the whole 9 yards that those things entail. I don’t preach about how I see things. In other words, it is of no importance to me on a personal level. When I die I simply return to the earth, food for other living things to use. Nothing beyond that.
That said, when evangelicals of any belief, force their belief system on me or mankind with the resultant destruction that follows, I fight back against their inhumanity.
June 20th, 2007 at 9:54 pmThese people in here talking about Jesus would be upset, or turning in his grave, are not just blowing smoke. Historically speaking anyway, the man Jesus was about as far from a neo-conservative christian as anyone could possibly be.
From the records we have we know his first official acts were to publically condemn the current conservative based religious heirarchy and demonstrate that his God was not the punative monster these men would have the people worship.
He then set about teaching his “good news” as he called it, which basically consisted of learning to be nice to other people. He instructed the people to keep religious faith including his own seperate from government, and to not impose harsh or cruel penalties and to show compassion for even our enemies. Then the conservative fundamentalists arrested him, and convinced the government to execute him.
Given this history, it is unlikely that he would be too fond of what he would find in the so called Christian conservative movement today, including but not limited to the demonization of science.

I’ll tell you this Merlin, for me its not the religion, its the words.
Whether you believe Jesus was the son of God or a caretaker at the Delmar Motel in Barstow, the words still work.
Problem is, none of these so called, “Christian conservatives†ever bother to read them.
And if they did, then they need to work on their comprehension skills.
And again, I agree with your take completely here. In that distant time I spent many a morning mass reading and studying the gospels, and was mesmerized by the beauty and truth therein. It is the foundation of goodness behind the parables that created my philosophy of Humanism. I simply rejected the concept of god and a hereafter.
Oh, and there is no “comprehension” for a literalist. A contradiction in terms.

June 20th, 2007 at 10:33 pmI have just begun reading Al Gore’s new book “The Assault on Reason.” The introduction alone is worth the price of the book, IMO. The first chapter is on the use of fear. A very apt choice! Glancing through the rest of the book has me rather excited.

To me, he is definitely Anti-American, and if I were a “believer” I would consider him the personification of evil. Yes, the Anti-Christ. I think it is so ironic that these fundies think they are following Jesus to heaven yet never question that the temperature is getting warmer and warmer. Black is white, up is down and “Jesus” is really the devil.

“Faith Based Initiativesâ€.
Sometimes the light shines in the darkness. Have you read the book by David Kuo, “Tempting Faith”? He was the #2 man in Bush’s Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives. He finally “got it” after 3 years and has been speaking out against the corruption of politics since.

I am reminded often when being faced with these kind of folks, of the TV program “Twilite Zone”. You know, the ones where the devil convinces the mortal to sell his soul for anything he wants. It is not until the devil actually comes knocking, that the reality grabs him. (Can’t he have more time?)
June 20th, 2007 at 11:57 pmThen the wailing and the gnashing of teeth begins. I suspect Tony’s time may be drawing near. I wonder if he will ever “get it.” Some go to their “eternal” unrest still convinced that heaven is down and hell is up.
WTF? Black is white and up is down for these lying ideologues bastard criminals. Is anyone in the MSM holding these fools accoutable for the bullshit they try to spin on us? Never mind, it’s the MSM we’re talking about.
June 21st, 2007 at 12:00 amThe only reason Bush does not want to kill embryos is he can’t hear them scream, smell their incinerated flesh or hear their loved ones weep. He is also building his defense against possible future murder and crimes against humanity charges. Human life is sacred, except when it involves the U.S. Army in the 1800s shooting native american children in the backs as revenge for the idiot Custer’s death, or when it involves
June 21st, 2007 at 12:02 amBush’s personal blood lust. Same empire, different century.
Another reason Bush does not want stem cell research: Just think what it would do to the pharmaceutical industry… if we could actually cure diseases without all those drugs.
June 21st, 2007 at 12:18 amCome on guys, Bush is all about the “culture of life.” Just because the life he supports doesn’t happen to include those of us that have already been born doesn’t mean we should judge this baby eating son of Satan. I mean, think of all the blastocysts he’s protecting. Just because they’re cells with no nervous system, organs, or anything that actually resembles a living human, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have rights. I say we should also save the sperm and the ovum. Think of the daily atrocities and wanton destruction of potential life every menstrual cycle and wet dreams cause. Oh the horror, oh the humanity!!!
June 21st, 2007 at 12:19 amBush is not employing “right-wing ideology.” It’s murdered babies
June 21st, 2007 at 12:24 amYes “murdered babies” Should I say it again so you can clearly hear it.
So you want to murder babies?
You say its babies that would be murdered anyway?
using it makes you a party to it.
See John Run. Run John Ron. It is that basic no matter what type of spin you spin to it.

June 21st, 2007 at 12:33 amIn time if the embryos are not used, they get washed down the drain or thrown our…. so, maybe with your belief system embryos should not be artificially made?
And the question: If you were in a room with a 2 year old and a refrigerator full of embryos, the place caught on fire and you could only save one… which would it be?
James you are an idiot. These aren’t babies, they’re the potential for babies. Just like the sperm you lose in your wet dreams aren’t babies or the eggs your mom’s and your girlfirend bodies get rid of every twenty eight days aren’t babies, embroyos are not babies. They are, one lucky sperm, and one egg. Why don’t you go on a fucking crusade to save all the eggs from womens’ menstrual cycles and all the sperm from wet dreaming masturbating teens while you’re at it.
June 21st, 2007 at 12:37 amStupid ass conservatives care more about blastocysts in a petrie dish than 5 year old little girls with leukemia or diabetes. They care more about a clump of cells than a grandmother with alzheimers. They care more about embroyos than they do about mothers dying of cancer. Compassionate conservativism at work!

June 21st, 2007 at 12:46 amWhy aren’t you and other’s like you screaming murder when these embryos get thrown out? Not a word – right? That doesn’t really matter – right?
This is all about abortion…if it is well publicized the embryos are being used, thus killed, then you right to life freaks may worry the chance of abortion becoming illegal falls one step backwards.
Bush is rearranging the blastocytes on the Titanic before they get dumped into the medical waste bucket.
Why does Bush’s god hate Americans and want them to suffer so much?
June 21st, 2007 at 1:05 amIf stem cells were actually able to cure disease, think what it would do to the pharmaceutical corporate industry, bush’s buddies – could wipe them out. I don’t really think bush gives a damn about abortion… like everything elese it is one big sham.

Their work has been boosted by a £4million donation from an anonymous American benefactor…….
