Folks,

The solution is multi-faceted.

First, build the fence. Electrified or not, build it. Along the Canadian border too. Also inspect 100% of containers, where some illegals come in from overseas ports. This will help with other aspects of homeland security too.

Second, bring home the Army from Iraq and place them on our borders. This is the proper job for a country's army, not going off into foreign entaglements (per George Washington) to secure the world's oil supply for ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, ChevronTexaco, and Shell.

Third, publicly arrest the CEOs of companies that employ illegal immigrants, make them do the TV perp walk, try and convict them and send them to jail for 10 years, and fine their corporations a million dollars for each case of employing an illegal immigrant. That's $500 million for the meat-packing house that employs 500 illegals.

Fourth, offer an Amnesty program--for illegals who agree to return home. A thousand dollars in cash, payable as they exit the country. Fingerprint them on the way out so that they can be identified in the future as illegals if they choose not to come back through legal immigration means.

Fifth, raise minimum wage to $15.00 per hour, and require that all coprorations that use seasonal or unskilled labor provide health care insurance for their employees. Then Americans will want to do the jobs that allegedly only illegal immigrants will now do.

There is no will to do these things in either party, because no one wants to take the political fall for rising consumer prices that will occur if we place the cost of doing business on the corporations instead of having it rest on our local governments (emergency rooms, subsidized housing, etc.).

So either accept things as they are or vote to change them. Half-measures that offer winks and nods to corporate interests do not work.

Jose and Carlos are panhandling at the freeway offramp.

Jose drives a Mercedes, lives in a mortgage free house and has a lot of money to spend. Carlos only brings in 2 to 3 dollars a day.

Carlos asks Jose how he can bring home a suitcase full of $10 bills every day.

Jose says, "Look at your sign." It reads: "I have no work, a wife & 6 kids to support"

Carlos looks at Jose's sign. It reads: "I only need another $10.00 to move back to Mexico"

#101 I am not against Mexicans. I am against any people breaking into my country illegally. An electirc frence would not harm Mexicans. It is a deturrent as no human would try to cross it thus no human would be hurt. What is your solution is keeping all illegals out of our country?

The offense here is not that Lott may have proposed an electrified fence. Rather it's that he compared illegal aliens to goats and suggested that Americans are more intelligent and should be able to find a way to keep them out.

How about we electrify jerks like you.
Why are you against Mexicans but support Muslims?
It wasn't 19 Mexicans than rammed planes into the Twin Towers!

I know it helps to make the republicans look bad by them using the words livestock when talking about keeping human beings out but the idea (which they seem incapable of intelligently expressing) is better than the idea of a fence alone. Electricity would help keep people from climbing over it... however don't people have ways of cutting or breaking through electric fences? What about tunneling under. There are many tunnels under then border right now... I wish the politicians would quit trying to think like engineers and let the engineers figure out an all encompassing way to totally protect the borders or certify that it is not possible given the cost involved in implementing a full proof solution.

An electric fence would be a very good solution. Just knowing it was there would keep the illegals away. The only question is if the communist congress is interested in protecting Americans from illegals. My guess is no, just like the last congress.

The very mentality that men like Hitler possessed... That some humans are lesser humans.

Of course, I have a problem with how we treat animals as lesser life forms, because not only who are we to judge, but once you divide yourself into catagories of 'better than' and 'lesser than', you won't ever stop doing it. Value ALL life and these sorts of outrageous comments will cease to be supported.

No doubt Wayne. Very few employers have faced legal troubles for illegally hiring illegals- barely a slap on the wrist when caught. Business interests have gotten everything they wanted- from ridiculus tax breaks to near slave labor. The illegal floodgate was opened to level the playing field in a globalized economy IMO. The middle class standard of living had to be lowered to compete with the serfs in the rest of the world. Illegals might be considered a weapon in the war on the middle class.

I’m about as “progressive” as can be until it comes to this issue. I’m a strong union man (skilled tradesman) whom is bothered more than most by the weakening of the unions that made the middle class. Like unions or not, they are (or used to be) the check & balance of corporate greed run amok.

The problem is that no political party really cares about unions anymore. The rethugs have nearly won their undeclared war on them and the democrats could care less. They honestly seem to care more about Fred & Joes ability to get married than their ability to make a decent wage.

In a sense I can’t blame the democrats too much though. They can’t count on a solid union vote anymore. BushCo et al has been genius in propaganda and emotional issue twisting. They actually convinced many I know that the democrats were going to take their guns away, turn their sons and daughters into “queers”, abort any fetus they could find, and do all this while hating Jesus and those who serve in the military because they are immoral! Sad but true.

Read Lott's statement carefully. I guess if we could get someone to electrify Mexicans as Lott electrified his goats, all of our problems would be solved!

Listen to this guy. We're going to need some kind of fence to hold the Republicans once we take over.

It's really funny to watch you liberals getting into a fight over political purity. "Oh, you can't be liberal/progressive/good person because..."

Talk about tolerance. Maybe one day you'd like to take a look into that behavior - that is, if you want to win any elections in near future.

Mr Lott really needs to learn how to form an analogy BEFORE attempting to verbalize it. (Just because he says there's an analogy doesn't make it so.)
At any rate, regarding an electrified fence along the US-Mexican border, has anyone actually explained to these loons just how much longer the border is compared to the farms they mention? An acre (the usual measure for farmland) is 43560 square feet in size. A perfectly square piece of land measuring one acre would have a side length of 208.71 feet with a perimeter of just under 835 feet in length (208.71 x 4). Now, 1 mile consists of 5280 feet which means that the perimeter of one acre is less than 1/6 of a mile. Let's presume someone has a farm of 1000 acres; that's a total of 43,560,000 square feet. If that 1000 acres is perfectly square in shape, each side will be 6600 feet in length for a perimeter of 26,400 feet (6600 x 4) which just happens to come to exactly 5 miles. Now, 5 miles doesn't seem like much, but that is only 7/10 of 1% of the 674-mile LAND border between the US and Mexico (there's roughly 1278 miles of river border--the Rio Grande and Colorado River--that can't be electrified). Which city or state is going to be responsible for providing the electricity to this vast fence? There are three states along this lengthy border (the Texas-Mexico border is almost exclusively formed by the Rio Grande; there's at least one small land border that I'm familiar with--at El Paso, due to a border demarcation following a shift in the Rio Grande's flow) but I can't imagine those three states accepting responsibility for guaranteeing electric power to a fence which will be largely set out in the middle of the desert. What happens to the fence if/when California has another one of those massive brownouts? Does anyone honestly think that Californians are going to accept their being left in the dark so that the fence can be powered? Somehow, I doubt it.
When a farmer puts up an electric fence on HIS property, HE accepts the fact that HE will pay the power bill (and, if he fails to pay the power bill, the power company won't keep that fence electrified out of the goodness of the company's "heart"). He doesn't rely on his neighbors to pay for HIS fence. But, I'll also guarantee that most farmers don't put up electric fences.
