Yesterday, the Center for American Progress and Free Press jointly released a statistical analysis showing that talk radio in the United States is dominated almost exclusively by conservatives.
Matt Drudge picked up the report, and it’s now being pilloried on the right. First out of the gate was National Review writer and radio host Mark Levin, who conjured a conspiracy theory linking the report on radio regulation to Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY):
The Center for American Progress and Free Press (yeh, right) is a sleazy operation. It was set-up by Bill Clinton’s impeachment chief of staff, John Podesta, and is run by him today. It is no coincidence that Podesta would issue this report now, as its purpose is to help Hillary Clinton by unleashing yet another assault on talk radio. [...]
The Center for American Progress and Free Press is an IRS designated tax-exempt 501 (C)(3) organization, based on its representation to the IRS that it is a non-partisan group operating in the public interest. My guess is that Podesta is in regular communication with the Clinton campaign and he or others may well be coordinating some of their activities on her behalf and on behalf of the Democrat Party.
Levin’s attack falls apart in his first sentence. The “sleazy” Clintonista “Center for American Progress and Free Press” doesn’t exist. There is no such organization.
The Center for American Progress, headed by former Clinton chief of staff John Podesta, is one group. Free Press is its own, distinct group. The report was a collaboration between these two progressive nonprofit organizations. Perhaps Levin can make clear whether he thinks Free Press is part of the Clinton conspiracy, or was duped into collaborating on the report.
Additionally, CAP does not coordinate with any campaign, and Levin offers no evidence — other than his “guess” — that the report’s “purpose” was to “help Hillary Clinton.” The real purpose of the report was to highlight the imbalance in talk radio and propose remedies.
ThinkProgress also spoke with Josh Silver, executive director of Free Press, who issued this response to Levin:
As executive director of Free Press, I was surprised to learn on the National Review Web site that my organization was part of the Center for American Progress. While we did work with CAP on this study of talk radio programming, as well as issues like Community Internet, a simple Google search would have showed that Free Press is an independent, nonpartisan organization. We don’t take money from any political party or corporation, and we have teamed up on different media policy issues with everyone from MoveOn.org and the Christian Coalition to the ACLU, the Parents Television Council and the American Library Association.
Last I checked, we were even working with The National Review itself on a campaign to stop unfair postal rate hikes that threaten smaller publications and opinion journals. If we can get those rate hikes reversed, hopefully NRO.com will be able to hire more fact-checkers.
Too late. Levin’s lies will find their way into the rightwing blogosphere, where they will be spread as fact.
June 21st, 2007 at 5:17 pmAlright, it seems like a grammatical error the douchebag made. I think Levin is a prick, but c’mon TP you seem to be reaching a bit.
June 21st, 2007 at 5:20 pmYes, we liberals regularly meet at John Podesta’s house (yes, all of us) to conspire on how to… how to… how to, uh… what exactly is their issue here? That liberals are “conspiring” with other liberals to study the media? Sheesh… So, this is what happens after you’ve completely scraped the bottom of the barrel…
If I were gonna accuse someone of conspiracy – I’d make it a hell of a lot more interesting and melodramatic than this non-issue of a ’study’.

Liberals On Talk Radio: If You Can’t Beat Em…….Legislate Them To Death
by B.T.
Things like this that appear on a blog that fraudulently uses the word “progress†in its name just makes me chuckle:
REPORT: The Right Wing Domination Of
Talk Radio And How To End It
The Center for American Progress and Free Press today released the first-of-its-kind statistical analysis of the political make-up of talk radio in the United States. It confirms that talk radio, one of the most widely used media formats in America, is dominated almost exclusively by conservatives.
The new report — entitled “The Structural Imbalance of Political Talk Radio†— raises serious questions about whether the companies licensed to broadcast over the public radio airwaves are serving the listening needs of all Americans.
While progressive talk is making inroads on commercial stations, right-wing talk reigns supreme on America’s airwaves. Some key findings:
– In the spring of 2007, of the 257 news/talk stations owned by the top five commercial station owners, 91 percent of the total weekday talk radio programming was conservative, and only 9 percent was progressive.
– Each weekday, 2,570 hours and 15 minutes of conservative talk are broadcast on these stations compared to 254 hours of progressive talk — 10 times as much conservative talk as progressive talk.
– 76 percent of the news/talk programming in the top 10 radio markets is conservative, while 24 percent is progressive.
Two common myths are frequently offered to explain the imbalance of talk radio: 1) the 1987 repeal of the Fairness Doctrine (which required broadcasters to devote airtime to contrasting views), and 2) simple consumer demand. Each of these fails to adequately explain the root cause of the problem. The report explains:
Our conclusion is that the gap between conservative and progressive talk radio is the result of multiple structural problems in the U.S. regulatory system, particularly the complete breakdown of the public trustee concept of broadcast, the elimination of clear public interest requirements for broadcasting, and the relaxation of ownership rules including the requirement of local participation in management. […]
Ultimately, these results suggest that increasing ownership diversity, both in terms of the race/ethnicity and gender of owners, as well as the number of independent local owners, will lead to more diverse programming, more choices for listeners, and more owners who are responsive to their local communities and serve the public interest.
Along with other ideas, the report recommends that national radio ownership not be allowed to exceed 5 percent of the total number of AM and FM broadcast stations, and local ownership should not exceed more than 10 percent of the total commercial radio stations in a given market.
This kind of report is comedy gold. Really, for people who are supposedly so smart God himself is envious to write this kind of tripe is hilarious, because they so badly miss the point entirely. Conservative talk radio is popular because the majority of the hosts are good at what they do, and are articulate in what they say. Liberal talk radio is so far to the left it’s only going to appeal to the same kind of people that run and read sites like Think Progress and democraticunderground, the same folks who so consistenly focused on the bad and negative in America, and who are so intolerant of more conservative views they turn off the political middle. At least in Conservative talk radio you get all shades of the right, which makes for a broader listening base.
If liberals, who already control much of the MSM and get carte blanche with their views daily, could put forth a talk show host that wasn’t a charter member of MoveOn who could appeal to a broad base of folks this wouldn’t be an issue. But they have yet to try that. No, instead their focus is on how they can just legislate Conservative talk radio away. Could it be they know deep down their pure unadulterated liberalism can’t beat Conservatism head to head?
June 21st, 2007 at 5:37 pmthe am radio thread is pretty much a right wing circle jerk at this point. I wouldn’t bother unless you like mindless aggression and hate

No question. Conservatives have more group discipline than liberals — that’s because they see things in more simplified patterns. Liberals are more comfortable with nuance, and thus have a much more difficult time coming to agreement.
Also because it seems that with conservatives, it’s all about winning, not so much about what’s best.

The BIG problem is that ONLY the CONGRESS can make laws…..

I’ve figured out all our problems, but I don’t have a fix unfortunately. Right-wingers simply haven’t evolved as far as the left. They’re incapable of critical thought, and their response to everything is defensive and attacking.
Al Gore, in his new book, “The Assault on Reason” says it differently, even though the result is as you note. In chapter 1 called “the politics of fear,” he points to fear as the governing factor. (Not a new thought but the real answer, nontheless.)
People that jump on board the BushCo, right wingnut bandwagon, are scared to death, and thought is nowhere to be found. Once they sign on to the emotional fear no one is going to talk them out of it. They are operating on emotional auto-pilot. It would be like trying to pry a gun out of a rigormortised hand. And that is one reason it is of no value to argue or “discuss” anything with trolls.
To my mind, most of our problems will go away when we reach a critical mass of those who have evolved.
Yes, our evolutionary direction is leading us there. However, as the scientists are now discovering we are a long distance from that cure. The real hope we have in the present, is to promote reason and logic to prevent evil people from using fear to manipulate and control us. BushCo is the best and most apparent use these things, and of the danger we face as a country and the world.
Check out Gore’s book! It is an extraordinary view of the big picture. Extremely readable; he puts into clear perspective what is, and has been, going on and his view of why. I have not heard this kind of clarity from any presidential candidate!
June 21st, 2007 at 6:54 pmJohn R said, “I work in a newsroom, and I’m the only conservative in my newsroom. Explain to me why all of my colleagues are flaming left-wingers.”

June 21st, 2007 at 7:19 pmLevin goes ballastic right from the gitgo. Maybe you should responded in kind by saying something like – “Mark Levin is a renowned child molester who writes for an organization where most of the staff get hot just thinking about Fred Thompson’s aftershave”. And if you just happened to call his organization the Weekly National Standard Review, you’d have his accuracy in naming organizations.
Seriously, they let this loon out of his cage again?
June 21st, 2007 at 7:27 pmIt’s not very surprising that the GOP has been trying everything they can to paint a bad picture of notable Democratic leaders. The support of Democratic candidates and leaders really supports the notion that the Democrats are taking on issues that really matter to the American people. From health care to education and poverty, these issues take precedence over an ever-inflating military budget. This is why the the GOP and conservatives have resorted to smear campaigns. They can’t win on the issues.
The Borgen Project states that just $19 billion annually can end starvation and $23 billon annually can reverse the spread of Malaria and AIDS. With these issues being so easily addressed, it is no wonder that a war-touting Republican side isn’t doing well in the polls or with the American people.
