The Minnesota Monitor reports that Rachel Paulose, the embattled U.S. attorney in Minnesota and former Gonzales assistant, had to endure an “awkward moment” earlier in the week at an office party when members of her office cheered her critics:
On Tuesday afternoon, about 70 employees of the U.S. attorney’s office and other guests gathered in a big conference room to recognize the departure of Assistant U.S. Attorney Perry Sekus. Sekus is leaving to join the legal staff of UnitedHealth. Paulose was present. [...]
When it was his turn to address the group, Sekus deflected the compliments that had been sent his way and said that those who deserved the praise were the former supervisors who had resigned their posts, because their actions had required courage.
At that, the room erupted with loud, sustained applause that could not be taken as anything other than solidarity with Paulose’s internal critics and appreciation for the sacrifice they had made to protest against her — clearly a spontaneous release of the tensions within the office. According to a witness, the ovation was so loud that it had to represent the applause of 90 percent or more of those in the room.
“Awkward moments” should be the least of the torments these “loyal Bushies” should be forced to endure.
June 21st, 2007 at 11:28 amI really hope this “awkward moment” is the least of her problems.
June 21st, 2007 at 11:31 amI could not agree more. I don’t know about you, but a person who could sit through something like that and still show up for work the next day is _____. (fill in the blank)
June 21st, 2007 at 11:32 amI believe these awkward moments should be termed getting the Card Degree Treatment.
Remember when former Bush pudwipe Andy Card was booed and jeered for a full two minutes when getting his honorary degree?
Hopefully this is only the beginning.

June 21st, 2007 at 11:36 amAs wonderful as this may be, she’s still there. Another day, another loss of our freedom in the making.
Unless many, many more people throughout the country step up to the plate and do things like those attorneys (who probably had jobs waiting for them and don’t have to worry about eating and shelter, those niggling little details), we’re going nowhere.
Don’t get me wrong. I HUGELY applaud what they did in resigning. And I applaud their ex-coworkers deafening applause. But the fact remains that nothing has changed from it.
And too few people in this country care.
June 21st, 2007 at 11:39 amImagine being a DPW foreman and being told that you are only going to be allowed to pave streets in areas where Republicans live.
These people don’t pave streets. They investigate and prosecute criminal cases.
Damn straight they’re angry.
June 21st, 2007 at 11:40 amI am assuming there will plent of awkward moments when Chimpy and Darth are tried for Crimes Against Humanity at an International Court of Law.
June 21st, 2007 at 11:43 amLets see, which noted bloggerrecently said something to the effect that, when they accuse you of in-civility, they probably did something that can only be addressed with honest vitriole.
Usually, when a very large majority are “mad as hell and not gonna take any more…” then there’s some hell to pay by the tiny minority whose partisan lawlessness and bully leadership inspired that righteous anger in the first place.
Much more of this spontaneous action to come, especially in the defense of some of the victims of partisan DOJ liberal laundering. In the wake of Schlotzman’s conservative wave, Paulouse is just the tip of an iceberg of bad managers, bent on purging the system of anything left of Newt Gingrich.
They must have all believed TBlossom when he predicted a Republican retention of both houses… or they would not have continued right up to and over the precipice of bottomless hubris. But now their misdeeds have caught up to them, at least in Waxman’s court of public approval, and there’s no web of good-old-boy Republicans to bail them out or cover-up the mess, and kkep any modern-day sherlocks off the trail.
But they were ultimately wrong. So, he game is afoot,…

June 21st, 2007 at 11:50 amSekus is leaving to join the legal staff of UnitedHealth.
This is a little off the topic people but read the above again…
“Sekus is leaving to join the legal staff of UnitedHealth.”
The US Attorney is going to greener pastures to be found at UnitedHealth.
I have to keep on reminding myself that we are in Kansas after all. Many are upset that Gonzales is getting rid of USAs but consider something people. They are still blood sucking lawyers, all of them. Just about every congressperson is a lawyer. Now we see why HMOs and insurance companies mesh so well with our political system.
The lawyers of the world protect the plutocratic interests of the large corporations and of the politicians. More lawyers! I’m not protecting Gonzales and I wish he would go but we are drowning in lawyers. Did you ever wonder how many laws there are in the USA? There are so many that odds are I am breaking a few by just sitting here at the computer.
Please people come on board for a national strike so we can take steps to simplify our Nation’s laws and weed out as many of the bad apples as possible by the elimination of plutocratic ambitions (corporate lobbies).
June 21st, 2007 at 11:52 amSo, Paulose had to sustain some discomfort. What about the thousands and thousands of human beings who have been maimed, orphaned, killed because of support for this current White House administrations overreaching, egregious acts of war and secrecy. Kudos to all those who stood and clapped for Paulose’s critics.
June 21st, 2007 at 11:56 amThe lawyers of the world protect the plutocratic interests of the large corporations and of the politicians.
Other lawyers sue those interests, and stand up for Guantanamo detainees. Lawyers aren’t your problem.

On the contrary, the plutocracy is guarded by cunning laws that bolster all of those within. The rest of us are enslaved by the plutocracy. All of the lawyers are honestly guarding their client’s best interests for $$$. Here you can see a connection between the corporations and the government we lost control of years ago.
Only a lawyer would defend and protect blood sucking lawyers!

Yes, courage, which is why it had to be explained to the Republicans present.

I’m guessing that you know nothing about Sekus, other than the fact that he’s an attorney, and starting a new job. This guy does have the right to make a living, and contrary to what you seem to believe, not all lawyers are scum-sucking bast*rds.

”The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers,” was stated by Dick the Butcher in ”Henry VI,” Part II, act IV, Scene II, Line 73.
I say you are the troll here. Regardless, learn to read. I am against anything that is pro corporations. I have posted the reality that the main enemy of freedom is the plutocracy bound into the USA by law. Everyone knows that some lawyers are good but those working to bury us in a deeper plutocracy should fear what Shakespeare said.
Frankly, you have a lot of nerve. You don’t support change, you don’t support a simple legal system. You love the technicalities of our Rube Goldberg system of law and government that enable the plutocratic interests to destroy the constitution.
Read my post and I stated that, “This is a little off the topic people but read the above again.” According to you I should overlook the fact that a USA is moving to a corporate interest and that I find that fascinating as well as possibly dangerous.
Lawyers don’t always eat their own and I never said they did!

I’m guessing that you (Zooey) know nothing about switch hitters. The bat from both sides of the plate to advance the team they happen to be on at that time. United Health is HMO/Insurance and the peak of plutocratic interest here in the USA. Corporate law and corporate attorneys have no interest in guarding the letter of the law or protecting you! I never said anything about haw another blood sucker can or can’t earn it’s living. What I did point out is that we need to look at that and determine if the relationship between the USAs and United Health is too close!
Lawyers represent their clients interests not the letter of the law! Lawyers are then parasitic in nature and consume their host.

June 21st, 2007 at 1:11 pmIt is utterly ridiculous to slam all lawyers like some are doing here.
Obviously you haven’t NEEDED one or you would not speak this way. The FIRST person you will call when in trouble is a lawyer so think before you speak.
Without them, you don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of success in any type of case.
June 21st, 2007 at 1:26 pmYour real enemy are the limits being put on awards, the screwed up TORT laws and other shifty laws that are being pulled on you. These limits do NOTHING to improve things for you, they only hurt you and HELP the mega insurance corporations but people don’t understand (or bother to learn about)what these limits mean and how damaging they are to citizens and instead slam lawyers and think capping awards is a good thing. If it was YOUR child injured in a health accident who had permanent injuries requiring constant lifetime care, Im sure you’d understand that medical malpractice limits mean that you will not get one dime for your child and all your child suffered even if you do win. It is this type of change that HURTS the public at large and limits their ability to defend themselves and ONLY benefit corporations and insurance companies, that is the kind of thing you should be angry about.
There are unscrupulous lawyers just like there are unscrupulous people in ALL professions but they do not represent the vast majority.
I agree with freedomrings on this issue. I don’t think he is trying to say anything in black and white. Rather, I think he is making a generalization that that fits the majority. And I agree. There are more lawyers out protecting the greedy than defending the righteous. The fact that those in the majority are making our laws are making it so that we are defending our right to justice instead of living with justice. And I think that was his point. If I am wrong, I apologize.

Comment by loretta — June 21, 2007 @ 1:11 pm
I take it this question was directed to me? The USA job would be the “s*it” job in this case if your goal was to “get paid”. His “new job” would enable that “get paid” concept. Regardless corporate law is an aberration produced by a Railroad Lawyer named Abe Lincoln. Corporations wanted Abe in the executive chair since he (Abe) worked for the Corporations.
Maybe we should all get our BS sorted out before we fling it. Corporations are not people but thanks to Abe Lincoln corporations can do as they please. This is how bad ideas like eminent domain got started. When I suggest that we are run by a “Plutocracy” that is not just some baseless claim.
Look at all of the laws in any legal library and stand there in utter amazement at the vastness of it all. Odds are you are only seeing the “ambulance chaser” laws but there are so many more. The legal system has created its own language and own government to help the plutocratic system flourish and allow only those that are part to flourish.
We don’t need all of those laws and we should reject them as overly complicated but the lawyers created this system and have told us that we in fact have no choice other than accept their rules. Lawyers love Rube Goldberg like systems. Atop the hill someplace are the scales of justice and on one side is a pound of flesh and on the other a pound of coke.
Like a casino this is all a show put on to protect the plutocratic interests and loot all the resources possible. It’s all an illusion!

Yes the first thing I’m going to do when I break the law is contact a USA or a Corporate Lawyer working for United Health.
I will send myself a “memo†reminding me that the next time I ask congress to stop the war that lawyers for Raytheon, Grumman and a few other weapon makers seem to have Congress’s proverbial ear and that deafens them to my cries.
Blood suckers create their own language of blood sucking. Blood suckers control the government. Both sides are simply “ONE AMALGAMATION” called “Blood Sucking Lawyers!” Politicians are for the most part “BLOOD SUCKING LAWYERS” or “former corporate executives”….

Comment by joe — June 21, 2007 @ 2:02 pm
Hi Joe,
You allow someone to be your “boss?†I mean that is incredible in this day and age when we all know about the dangers of “group-think.†It is a fact that Lincoln was an insider for the railroads and he enabled the most damage to the Constitution of all Presidents till Nixon. The Corporate Plutocracy was well in the game during both World Wars.
The plutocracy created Hitler. Go and look for yourself Joe and you will be amazed that companies like IBM made machines to count, track and process Jewish slaves. Be amazed that while US troops died, GM had plants in operation in Germany. Our Dictator’s Grandfather, Prescott Bush who was a NY Investment Banker gave Hitler (not directly check into Hitler’s hand) money from Brown Brothers Harriman until the last year of WW2 and was fined for this a whole $10K.
It isn’t that every corporation is “in on it†or that every lawyer is “in on it.†What matters is that the Founding Fathers insisted that corporations should NEVER be more powerful than the PEOPLE that allow them to exist. So corporations had many rules by the people governing them and their charters could be revoked by the people. Abe Lincoln gave corporations the Rights of Individuals guaranteed by the US Constitution.
So, from 1776 till the mid 1800s being a “Corporation†was not as ++Good as it is today. Corporate lawyers are not in business to protect individuals. For example “Love Canal†shows that there is an alliance between the Government and the Corporations who’s existence harms the citizens. I can bring up 100s of examples of collusion between the government and business but honestly I could not do the same for collusion between citizens and government.
By the way Joe capitalism is synthetic. We use a system of FIAT credits so that we slaves can fend for ourselves so that our masters don’t have to hobble us or chase after us. The Devil’s biggest trick was to convince you that you are free and that he never existed at all. Plutocracy is essentially the wealthy running the whole show. More to the point it is “Class Warfare†we are looking at. I’m sure Kevin is a great upstanding individual who appears to support your individual rights. If Kevin is part of a “Corporation†then he is a†task master†nothing more or less.

How can ANY who remain there function at the capacity that they should be? And if they are not quitting, but staying and failing to give their all to the job, how could any of them justify it?

Well Zooey,
Above is your opinion of what I wrote here. I accept it as your opinion but you have no way of knowing anything about me or my mental status. I supplied facts that I read from here on TP that this lawyer is going to go to work for of all things an HMO/Insurance company.
The first thing is you are willing to “tell me a thing or two” about what I must be and openly defend the nations legal system. You support the system as a whole and appear to be a shill for that system. You don’t even know what you are talking about. It doesn’t matter if the USAs are appointed by the right or left since both sides are corrupted.
What is safe to say is that you don’t agree with me even though we are both subjects of a Plutocracy and that disagreement does not change the fact that our system of government is corrupt along with the legal system the corrupt government created and all of those that would be part of that corrupted system.
Blood suckers!

PRIDE: Pride is excessive belief in one’s own abilities, that interferes with the individual’s recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.
June 22nd, 2007 at 2:41 pmMedieval theologian Thomas Aquinas said of Pride “inordinate self-love is the cause of every sin (1,77) … the root of pride is found to consist in man not being, in some way, subject to God and His rule.”
What was the right thing to do then?
