McNulty: Domenici call key to Iglesias’ firing.»

On Oct. 4, 2006, Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM) called former Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty to complain about his state’s then-U.S. Attorney David Iglesias. In testimony yesterday, McNulty confirmed that the call “was a significant factor” in Iglesias’ firing last year:

When McNulty found out that Iglesias’ name was on the list of U.S. attorneys to be fired, he said that Domenici’s call came back to him and was key in his decision to support Iglesias’ ouster.

That was a significant factor in my thinking as to not - as to why I did not object, yes,” McNulty said on March 30. McNulty confirmed that statement under questioning on Thursday.

Domenici, who is being investigated by the Senate Ethics Committee, also “personally appealed” to both President Bush and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales for Iglesias to be fired.

Hey Congress whatever you do, make sure you don’t do anything!!!!

All the evidence in the world wont make you guys actually start making heads roll will it? WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED?!?!?!?

  3. Barbarian Says:

Jake, again, wrong century. Your senility is unwanted here.

  4. Tom3 Says:

McNutty just admitted that Iglesias was fired for political reasons.

    That’s against the law.

  6. Texas Wind Says:

We need to get the likes of Domenici and Grassley out of office. They are just so old that they can’t think about anyone but their own goals. It is time the rest of Congress also starts to do things for the American people and not for themselves or their party. You can just figure that Domenici and Grassley are saying all the republican lingo only to get financial support from the repubican donors.

  7. Trekkie Says:

No worse than when Carter and Clinton fired U.S. Attorneys investigation their political friends.

So now it’s “Clinton and Carter Did It Too…”?

I would congratulate you on doubling your rhetorical library, but all you’ve really done is double the amount of horse manure to throw.

  8. Tom3 Says:

You know the Repuke trolls are losing when they whine, “B-b-but Clinton did it too”.

    Its still illegal and wrong.

  13. MAF54 Says:

#10: Constitution? There are well set precedents that in a time of war the President runs the show and the Congress does whatever he asks for.

  14. Jake Says:

    For the record,

It doesn’t matter if the President was trying to stack the DOJ with partisan hacks. It doesn’t matter if his campaign team, and one of the guys that got hired to replace one of these attorneys, was performing illegal voter caging in Florida in 2000 and 2004 and now its coming out and must be covered up. It doesn’t matter that two high ranking members admitted to breaking the law when hiring employees based on their political affiliations.

He’s the president, he decides what is legal and what isn’t.

I did have fun last night MAF54!

You guys are gonna be pleased as punch when a Democrat president exercises all that power. Thanks for your support.

you are incredibly illinformed. We are NOT “at war” War has NO been declared so stop using that lame excuse. We are illegally occupying a country. The prez does NOT make law, the fact that he thinks he does and his idiot minions agree show only that he is a FACIST dictator and you are one of his lemmings. Raise your hand and salute your leader you brown shirted moron.

Great point. The first act of the Democratic president should be to track down the trolls on TP and try them as traitors for their support of the traitors in the Executive.

The AUMF is the legal equivalent to a declaration of war — no magic word is required.

  26. Jake Says:

    Zooey,

You obviously don’t understand that the President will do what is necessary to make sure that doesn’t happen. He will continue to illegally stack the DOJ with Republican party faithful, and he will continue to disenfranchise minority voters to insure a Republican win. The Democrats in Congress are to wimpy to stop any of this. They are asking the wrong questions, which is exactly what the Republicans need them to keep doing!!

  27. Jake Says:

    Vet:

Shouldn’t the “first” act be to prove the President is a traitor?

  29. Tom3 Says:

I don’t give a rat’s ass what Clinton and Carter did. If Clinton fired a US Attorney to obstruct justice, as Chimpy clearly did, then he broke the law too.

“But Clinton did it too” won’t hold up in court, dumbass.

  30. MAF54 Says:

#28: It’s useless to talk sense to them. They’re in the “let’s purge anyone who is not pure enough a progressive!” mode here. If they manage to get to the power, they’ll do what the Red Khmers and Lenin’s thugs did: hunt down every dissenter.

  31. GSD Says:

    Hooray!

The Bush envoy has negotiated one on one with the north Koreans and has said that the North Koreans will shut the reactor down in a “few months”. This after the US “rewarded bad behavior” and released $25 million dollars in cash from a Macao bank.

    What a pack of asswipes.

Betcha the North Koreans will come up with another reason not to close their nuke plant in a few months.

They are outwitting the stupid Chimp at every turn.

  32. Crump's Brother Says:

    Jake,

“if it is illegal for Bush to fire U.S. Attorneys for political reasons, then it was illegal when Clinton and Carter did it, right?”

Question…. Do you think it SHOULD be legal? I’m curious your answer to this. I think that both sides of the aisle should be concerned that stacking the DOJ to insure some level of political bias be included in our justice system (which I think we can agree is a bad thing) might not be what the founders had in mind.

Do you think it is right to hire people in those very powerful positions in hopes that they will bring politically based charges against your political opponents?

  33. Mr. Bush Goes To Hell Says:

if it is illegal for Bush to fire U.S. Attorneys for political reasons, then it was illegal when Clinton and Carter did it, right?

The word is IF Carter or Clinton did it.

We KNOW that Bush had the attorneys fired in violation of the law.

    McNulty has just CONFIRMED it.

So, show us HOW Clinton or Carter did it, and that it was done ILLEGALLY.

Then, if it is true (it is NOT, of course, you are lying trolls), have the Attorney General’s office PROSECUTE THEM.

That’s what’s going to happen to TRAITOR Bush the MURDERER COXUCKER PUNK.

  34. Tom3 Says:

Can we get some higher-level trolls in the game to replace these two? These guys are pathetic.

    Yeah. I’ll vote for them.

  47. Namtillaku Says:

Who are you to speak of moral standards? Your comments are absurd.

  48. Mr. Bush Goes To Hell Says:

Yeah, like gayboy Ken Mehlman, former RNC CHAIRMAN.

And LYING and MURDERING one’s fellow man (Iraq), while the mastermind of 9/11, Osama, TRAITOR Bush’s buddy, is FREE?

And screw NATIONAL SECURITY by exposing a COVERT CIA spy who specialized in WMD?

MORALS?? TRAITOR Bush the MURDERER coxucker PUNK??

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  49. Crump's Brother Says:

    MAF54,

“upholds some moral standards (keeps obscenities like stem cell research, abortion and gay marriage at bay) and believes in a strong military?”

Don’t you find it peculiar that the President would veto the stem cell bill, on ‘maoral’ grounds, but then doesn’t oppose it if privateers do it. So killing the unborn is ok as long as big Pharma can make a buck off it?

  50. Jake Says:

    Crump’s Brother:

Yes, it should be legal (and, since Bush gave that power back to the Senate, it should take it’s confirmation obligation as to these positions seriously).

  51. Crump's Brother Says:

    Jake,

James Madison disagrees with you. It was his idea that the confirmation process would be the check on this happening. But he always stated that the President should not fire an otherwise meritorious officer or face impeachment.

“the president can displace from office a man whose merits require that he should be continued in it. What will be the motives which the president can feel for such abuse of his power, and the restraints that operate to prevent it? In the first place, he will be impeachable by this house, before the senate, for such an act of mal-administration; for I contend that the wanton removal of meritorious officers would subject him to impeachment and removal from his own high trust. “

So, then you have no problem with abortion being provided, as long as it’s a private business doing it. Great. Welcome aboard.

  54. Crump's Brother Says:

    MAF54,

    Are you really this dumb?

“The government should not hinder the business. That’s what the communists used to do.”

He didn’t veto the bill on market principles, he vetoed it based on his superstitious beliefs. His laughable “pro-life” stance is the reason he vetoed it. You yourself said it was a moral stand in your earlier post. If you think that, then how can you feel fine with private business doing it? Hypocrisy much?

  55. sponson Says:

Jake, you ignorant, misguided slut. Between 1979 and 2006 (prior to the Bush purge) there were a grand total of THREE (3) US Attorneys fired other than for proven corruption. This includes the Reagan and Bush I Presidencies as well. What you spew out about Carter and Clinton is not just wrong, it’s literally impossible.

  56. upside00 Says:

  57. Buck Fush Says:

They are simply total losers in real life that are hated by everyone, so they come here to disrupt threads and get you guys to respond to them. I don’t even read their posts anymore, because it is pure crap.

If it says Jake or MAF54 don’t even bother reading the post, it will only be crap meant to get at you emotionally.

Exactly what I would expect from a moron who has to get his talking points from FAUXNOIZ or the lard assed, drug addled, gas bag because you are unable to use the brain God gave you. Morons on the reich march in lock step because they are unable to think for themselves. 26%ers are not very smart just annoying.

  60. Jake Says:

P.S. I disagree with Madison’s position on slavery as well. But, when the next (Democratic) President engages in “wanton removal of meritorious officers” I hope you are as vociferous in your opposition.

  61. Jake Says:

For anyone really interested in whether previous dismissals of U.S. Attorneys were done by Democratic Presidents (OTHER THAN AT THE BEGINNING OF THEIR TERMS — as if that makes this suddenly horrible procedure of wantonly dismissing meritorius officers O.K.?) for political reasons, you don’t have to believe just me:

  63. kasinca Says:

Jake, nobody has ever fired attorneys to stack the deck to fix elections, prior to the cirme family. Caging of votes has been restricted of the GOP since the ’70s. They violated a court order restriction. Carol Lam was in the process of putting some wingers under the jail house.
