“Bill O’Reilly said newspapers have a dismal future and also criticized a writer in the audience during a speech Friday at the National Society of Newspaper Columnists (NSNC) conference.”
“Newspapers are dying, and there are two reasons why,” said the Fox News host and Creators Syndicate newspaper columnist. “One reason is the Internet. The other is ideology.”
O’Reilly contended that many newspapers are losing circulation because they’ve allowed the “liberal” ideology of their editorial pages to “bleed into news coverage” — despite, he said, there being a greater number of “traditional conservatives” than liberals in the American population.
The result? “Audiences are estranged from most major newspapers,” O’Reilly told the columnist attendees. “They hate you. When someone hates you, they’re not going to give you your money.”
HEYOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amazing.
June 22nd, 2007 at 9:37 pmO’Reilly’s daily dose of right-wing bullsh*t.
June 22nd, 2007 at 9:37 pmThe question is WHY journalists would listen to O’Reilly. It’s amazing that he thinks he has all the answers. I can’t wait until his career starts to fail and he learns the facts of life.
June 22nd, 2007 at 9:43 pmWhen did “liberal” become synonymous with “truth”? Empirical truth anyway. Ideologies based solely on fear and hate never stand the test of time. Of course, O’reilly’s legacy will go down in history as what can happen when journalism becomes opinionated. It won’t be flattering.
PS – I won’t be giving you any money either O’reilly *cough cough*
June 22nd, 2007 at 9:43 pmPersonally I don’t buy newspapers because what’s the sense of killing a tree when there are so many more environmentally friendly ways to get your news?
June 22nd, 2007 at 9:44 pm“They hate you. When someone hates you, they’re not going to give you your money.â€
So true. Reminder to self: Stop putting the twenty in the yearly I Hate You Bill O’Lielly birthday card.
I wonder if he really how he derides the mainstream neutral press for being liberal in their coverage while he injects some of the most rightward slanting comments in the mankind.

By Whitney Stewart
CNSNews.com Correspondent
June 22, 2007
(CNSNews.com) – At least 20 former members of Congress convicted of a range of criminal offenses continue to draw taxpayer-supported pensions each year, according to the National Taxpayers Union.
Congressional pensions are not public records, and the NTU says it bases its estimates on a lawmaker’s time of service, eligibility, and life expectancy. The numbers are adjusted based on factors such as cost of living changes, a former member’s military service and marital status.
All of the following were former members of the House of Representatives, with the exception of Durenberger, a former senator. Fauntroy was a non-voting delegate in the House representing the District of Columbia.
Dan Rostenkowski (D-Ill.)
- Convicted in 1996 on mail fraud charges
- Pension in 1995: $96,500
- Pension in 2006: $126,000
David Durenberger (R-Minn.)
- Convicted on fraud charges (1994 plea bargain)
- Pension in 1995: $65,000

Walter Fauntroy (D-D.C.)
- Convicted in 1995 on false financial disclosure charges
- Pension in 2006: $55,000 (This assumes he opted to receive full, deferred pension upon turning 60. He may also have qualified for early, reduced pension under CSRS rules.)
Mary Rose Oakar (D-Ohio)
- Convicted in 1998 on charges relating to financial disclosure irregularities
- First qualified in 2000 for pension: $46,500
- Pension in 2006: $54,000
George Hansen (R-Idaho)

June 22nd, 2007 at 10:17 pmO’Reilly to reporters: Americans ‘hate you.’
Question is which Americans hate the mainstream press? In my personal experience it’s people that are filled with either racist hate or alcohol and hate. That’s my personal experience. Also they usually have their head filled with wrong “facts” that they will not be deterred from believing no matter how much reality you shine in their eyes.
June 22nd, 2007 at 10:19 pmWASHINGTON — With the release of Michael Moore’s “Sicko,” a movie once again is adding sizzle to an issue that’s a high priority for liberal politicians — this time comprehensive health insurance for all. But unlike Al Gore’s film on global warming, which helped rally support on an equally controversial problem, “Sicko” is creating an awkward situation for the leading Democratic presidential candidates.
Rejecting Moore’s prescription on healthcare could alienate liberal activists, who will play a big role in choosing the party’s next standard-bearer. However, his proposal — wiping out private health insurance and replacing it with a massive federal program — could be political poison with the larger electorate.
At a special screening in Washington this week, politicians, lobbyists, media pooh-bahs and policy junkies flocked to see Moore’s film. And its slashing demand for action on an issue that voters care deeply about, and Democrats hope to capitalize on, generated plenty of buzz. Moore hopes that, after its general release June 29, “Sicko” will exert significant influence on the presidential campaign.
Instead of greeting the film with hosannas or challenging it head-on, however, the leading Democratic presidential candidates have sidestepped direct comment on Moore’s proposals.
Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois and former Sen. John Edwards of South Carolina all have staked out positions sharply at odds with Moore’s approach. But none of them is eager to have that fact dragged into the spotlight.
If Moore’s fire-breathing proposal catches on among party activists, who tend to be suspicious of the private sector and supportive of direct government action, the candidates’ pragmatic, consensus-seeking ideas could look like weak-kneed temporizing — much the way their rejection of an immediate pullout from Iraq has drawn heated criticism from antiwar activists.
In “Sicko,” the filmmaker calls for abolishing the insurance industry, putting a tight regulatory collar on pharmaceutical companies and embracing a Canadian-style government-run system.
Advocacy groups are already planning to use the film to pressure the Democratic hopefuls.
“The candidates haven’t sensed the political fever in this country that fundamental change is called for in the healthcare system,” said Rose Ann DeMoro, executive director of the California Nurses Assn. “What we are going to do is call on the candidates to reconsider their positions.”
Stoking the passions of rank-and-file Democrats for a government takeover of the healthcare system amounts to political folly, respond some liberal veterans of Washington’s healthcare battles.
“To presume that the private sector is going to sit idly by to see the destruction of private coverage I think is a misreading of reality,” said Ron Pollack of the advocacy group Families USA. “I think the presidential candidates understand that if healthcare reform is going to have a chance of success, it will require bipartisanship and a balance of public and private coverage. It cannot be the triumph of one ideology over the other.”
Such a blending increasingly seems to be taking place in major federal and state programs, including Medicaid, the State Children’s Health Insurance Program and Medicare. As employer-sponsored health insurance shrinks, insurance companies have reinvented themselves as managers and middlemen for government programs, said UC Berkeley health economist James Robinson.
For example, more than 60% of Americans enrolled in Medicaid, the federal-state program for the poor, are now in some form of managed care, compared with fewer than 25% in the mid-1990s. In California, Medicaid is known as Medi-Cal.
“Whatever mix of private and public sources will increase the number of people with coverage, the insurance companies would like it to be managed by them,” Robinson said in a recent interview. “They can work with Medicare, they can work with Medicaid, they can work with employers, they can work with whomever.”
There’s little room for such nuanced partnerships in “Sicko.” If there’s a villain in the movie, “the villain is called the health insurance industry of America,” Moore told a Capitol Hill rally Wednesday. To laughter and applause, Moore said he hoped the film would turn into a “going-away present” for industry lobbyists.
“Sicko” uses the wrenching stories of individual Americans to compare some of the worst failings of this country’s system with a rosy perspective on healthcare in Canada, Britain, France and even Cuba — a country that offers healthcare for all but also imprisoned a doctor in the late 1990s for speaking out against government failure to respond to an epidemic of a mosquito-borne virus.
Moore investigates the dumping of hospital patients on skid row in Los Angeles. He tells the story of a middle-class couple from Colorado who lost their home and had to move in with their adult children because of medical bills, even though they had insurance. A particularly sobering episode involves a Missouri family in which the father is denied a medical procedure that might have saved him from cancer.
Filmgoers also meet an uninsured American who accidentally sawed off two of his fingertips and had to choose which one to have reattached, because he couldn’t afford to do both. Moore juxtaposes that story with that of a young man in Canada who lost five fingers in an accident and had them all reattached — without having to pay.
“It’s quite effective, [but] it’s not a documentary,” Robert D. Reischauer, one of Washington’s leading health policy experts and a supporter of coverage for all, said after viewing the movie.
“Policy propaganda,” he called it.
For most Democratic presidential candidates (Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich of Ohio advocates a government single-payer program), it’s more like a headache.

June 22nd, 2007 at 10:24 pmBAD NEWS FOR THE ENERGY BILL
I hope this damn thing just falls to pieces … just like the amnesty bill. You want the bad news first? Well I guess it’s not terrible, if you’re a bleeding heart environmentalist who believes that government is the solution to every problem. Well, yesterday the Senate voted to raise fuel-economy requirements, demanding that they get 35 miles per gallon by 2020. Fine. Have it your way. Quite frankly, natural market forces would have taken care of that anyway. If people are unhappy with their gas mileage, they can just buy a different, more efficient car. That doesn’t seem too terribly hard, does it? No! It is the government’s job to make sure we, the ignorant subjects, do this!
But on to the good news. Republican Congressmen (oops, did I say “men”?!) managed to block the outrageous package of tax breaks for what they call “renewable sources of energy.” Under these tax proposals oil companies would have to pay for renewable sources of energy. Isn’t that just a genius plan? And guess who is sad … he’s whining that “There are still good things in this bill” … Harry Reid. Our favorite – and apparently yours too! – House majority leader.
Are you folks understanding how big this is? The defeated package called for $32 billion in tax breaks for renewable energy, and $29 billion was going to come from additional taxes on the oil industry.
The opponents were right. Forcing the oil companies to take their profits and, through taxes, invest those profits not in oil production, but in “renewable sources of energy”, would just raise oil prices. Is that we we’re looking for right now?
Democrats were really counting on these new taxes on oil companies. They’re really quite upset their plans have failed. Perhaps they’ll be bringing the proposal back for another vote!
Could the American people actually be smarter than that? If the immigration bill has taught us anything, it is that Americans are willing to voice their opinions on issues that really matter to them. Sorry Harry. You can go cry on Nancy’s shoulder now. But don’t worry, it will be reconsidered soon enough. So we can go through the whole thing again! Just so Harry can have his way.
June 22nd, 2007 at 10:24 pmSorry Nancy Pelosi. But we, the taxpayers, will no longer pay for you to travel to countries that sponsor terrorism. You can do that on your own liberal dime.
June 22nd, 2007 at 10:25 pmIt looks like Guantanamo Bay is on life support. It’s almost certain to be closed. So now what? Just let these “enemy combatants” back out onto the streets? I sure hope so , the streets of Berkley Seattle Chicago New York City : )
June 22nd, 2007 at 10:26 pmWe discussed this story yesterday. MSNBC did an investigation into the political contributions of reporters. Bear in mind, most journalists are smart enough not to make campaign donations. They don’t want to be that obvious. But of those who do, only 19 out of 144 contributed any money to Republicans. Now … tell me the mainstream media isn’t biased. Me? OK, that’s fair. I’ve only made campaign contributions to personal friends. That’s it. And no … you will never find me contributing to a Democrat in a national election.
Thank God there is no Media Bias

June 22nd, 2007 at 10:43 pmReally.
I mean really.
When we’re kids, and someone wants to trick us, they say, “Look! A bird!” It only takes a few times before even the youngest toddler knows not to look, because there isn’t, never has been, and never will be, a bird.
Same goes for the “Liberal Media” myth. The Washington Post, my hometown paper, hasn’t had a liberal slant since Reagan. It features such “liberal” views as those recently espoused by Richard Cohen, regarding poor Scoots Libby.
People who read the Post, one may safely assume, are literate. The mislabeling of the rag as part of the “liberal” media hasn’t gone unnoticed by the vast majority of its readers – those who haven’t caught on will eventually see the light. At that point, the paper will fail.
“Liberal” MSM, my aching ass.
BTW it’s so funny how “Obamasrightnut” has taken over this thread by virtue of continuous and unopposed posts. I would strenuously disagree his posts, had I bothered to read past the first one. (Like we don’t learn quickly.)
And, mr. rightnut, You’d be smarter not to mess with Zooey – there’s no point in you getting punked and castrated in front of everyone here.

Along with other ideas, the report recommends that national radio ownership not be allowed to exceed 5 percent of the total number of AM and FM broadcast stations, and local ownership should not exceed more than 10 percent of the total commercial radio stations in a given market.
So what about the other 85% of the market? Dead air?

If you sell the FCC to your friends, then you get what you pay for! We can see with this and other graphic representations how to explain even the most complicated issue to america’s heartland. with the farm report, but forget the tornado warning. no longer required by law. no requirement of having an EWS to let folks know that trouble is coming. You can’t warn a pre recorded show about something happening now, it would throw off the timing of the show and the advertisers would get upset. that’s why it is canned.
I would like to quote from Dan Hicks:
“Canned Music, Canned Music, playing on the radio
Canned Music, Canned music, without a dime it doesn’t go….
and so it goes
Comment by oldtree — June 20, 2007 @ 2:17 pm

the best way to end it is a completely different path – close the FCC!!
All it does is make it so difficult and so expensive to broadcast that the only ones who can afford to do it are the mega-corporations.
Sound familiar?
Since the FCC started “regulating†we’ve only had the media consolidated more and more every single year.
Working great, isn’t it….
The solution is not more power, but rather, more freedom.

Wrong, Noahm. That’s a popular “common sense†misconception that doesn’t always hold true in the real world. There are many examples all across the country of liberal talk programs and/or whole station formats that did well with advertisers and got very good ratings, but were dumped in favor of lesser-performing formats, often into the face of direct competition in the markets.

Does anyone really believe liberals would even entertain this renewed passion for the fairness doctrine if talk radio were overwhelmingly liberal? It just strikes me as so transparently opportunistic and unprincipled. If a conservative were to argue that the state should get involved in making Hollywood, or the biggest newspapers, or the broadcast news networks, or leading museums, publishing houses, or universities less liberal, liberals would justifiably scream bloody murder about censorship and propaganda.
So, linking to a Jonah Goldberg post demonstrates the “myth†of the effects of the demise of the Fairness Doctrine? Weak, Faiz. Now I know why TP never endorses a renewed Fairness Doctrine – it conflicts with TP’s agenda.

Just to state the obvious as has probably been done several times in other comments… conservatives flock to the radio because the rest of the media (television and print) is dominated by liberals. Here’s a deal- give conservatives control of the editorial boards of the NY Times, The Washington Post, the LA Times, USA Today, etc. and in turn give liberals control over talk radio. If you won’t make that trade, then you’re a liberal.

The reason liberal talk radio fails to ‘progress’ is that it has to compete with all the other liberal dominated media, i.e. Network News, 90% of major newspapers, three of the four major cable news channels, and, importantly, NPR. You could even through most hollywood productions. Aside from Fox News, conservative talk radio has no competition for conservative listeners.

Trying to blame Conservatives success on Talk Radio by saying that a few owners of the airways forces lefties not to have a forum. Bull Crap!
Liberals for decades have had decades on ABC,CBS,NBC and CNN to dispel myths and falsehoods on Conservatives.Liberals can’t even call themselves Liberals but Progressives. If they can’t even give the truth to who they are, why trust what they sat at all? Why is it that liberals always call for bans, fines, and government intervention when by-in large they are not entertaining at all, can’t support facts, then spin the truth. The days have ended that when a lie is told enough it becomes the truth is over.
Hell ,Libs still fawn over the Clintons who even the Giffins said the lie well. Talk radio is driven by profits and sponsor driven air time, that sponsors see results when listeners use their products or shop at their stores. Liberals hate profits, so how in the hell are they going to run something that is profitable.
Question: if liberals make huge profits from talk radio, will Hillary Clinton demand to take them such as she did when she attacked Big Oil?

June 23rd, 2007 at 2:46 amFair and Balanced > Neo-Conservatism as taught by Strauss:
Machiavelli’s political doctrine serves as the foundation of Neo-Conservatism and it denies the relevance of morality in political affairs. It states that that craft and deceit are justified in pursuing and maintaining political power. It implies that when it comes to achieving or maintaining power the end justifies the means.
This is essentially the core of Machiavellianism and serves as the foundation for Neo-Conservatism: The priority for the power holder is to keep the security of the state regardless of the morality of the means. Machiavelli discusses frankly, the necessity of cruel actions to keep power. He was in the business of power preservation not piety. According to the originator of Neo-Conservative ideology the leader of the state must stick to the good so long as he can, but, being compelled by necessity, he must be ready to take the way of the evil.
1. Nations cannot consider collective action and multilateralism unless it is 100 percent in line with their own selfish interests
2. Strong leadership is required, Military power is essential
3. Leadership ought not be encumbered by human rights discourse or a moral conscience but nonetheless must “appear” to advocate such ideas.
4. Rulers need not observe the laws they impose on those they rule.
5. A ruler can cheat, lie and commit crimes, but should at all time maintain the outside appearance of adherence to human rights and caring for people.
6. Leaders can use religion as one of many tools to ensure the nation keeps on course as formulated by the agenda.
7. Outside threats help ensure social cohesion under domestic leadership
8. Altruism, environmental protection, justice etc, are not the concern of governments and ruling elites. They have no part to play in the equation of power.
9. Strauss questioned how, and to what extent, freedom and excellence can coexist.
10. Strauss was very pre-occupied with secrecy because he was convinced that the truth is too harsh for any society to bear; and that the truth-bearers are likely to be persecuted by society, especially a liberal society because liberal democracy is about as far as one can get from the truth as Strauss understood it.
11. Secular society is the worst possible thing, because it leads to individualism, liberalism, and relativism, precisely those traits that may promote dissent that in turn could dangerously weaken society’s ability to cope with external threats.
12. Nazism was a nihilistic reaction to the ungodly and liberal nature of the Weimar Republic. Religion should impose moral law on the masses who would otherwise be out of control.

Taking it from the top: The fairness doctrine doesn’t actually limit free speech. It simply states that on important issues both sides need a hearing, and that important issues should get airtime.
Which means you can say what you like on an issue, but you have to allow for a rebuttal. Of course to you Republicans the idea of allowing for people to actually contradict your claptrap is a frightening one indeed.
As to the wide ranging whining rants which ammount to “He did it too” I have to ask, are you four or something? That excuse doesn’t work for most pre-schoolers do you really think it should work for your political party?
And even given that, I am sure a quick fact check will debunk your claims entirely, particularly if you base them on the works of that known liar, plagarist, and hypocrit Ann Coulter.
Back the the thread:
Conservatives don’t like the media because they are uninformed and don’t want to be informed.
They would rather follow a man who lied about winning a polk award (The award was actually won after he left that show) and who stated that Shawn Hornbeck, a preteen who was kidnapped, repeatedly sodomised and used in Child Pornography, found living with his kidnapper to be preferable to living at home.
How that total piece of dreck O’Reilly gets to lecture anybody I don’t know – and never really will because I don’t believe Americans, as a nation, would be able to think well enough to work out the mechanics of breeding if they are stupid enough to take that, thing at his word.
June 23rd, 2007 at 5:43 amNewspaper subscriptions have plummeted ever since the newspapers went right wing.
Television news viewership has tanked–precisely because the television news has gone right wing.
Right-wing talk radio has always been heavily subsidized. In a fair fight, progressive shows beat conservative shows every time.
In other words, the whole right-wing thing a a complete fraud.
Except for the 26 percenters, Americans don’t like right-wing stuff. It’s as simple as that.
June 23rd, 2007 at 6:51 amI find his logic interesting. Newspapers are dying for the same reason that FOX News and all the other television “news” is dying. People don’t want to pay for or watch lies.
Bill O’Reilly has also told his audience, which by the way is shrinking just like the newspapers audiences, that the Iraq war isn’t important. Bombs going off in Tikrit are meaningless. But Paris Hilton is important as are the number or bear attacks!!!!
Fox News always touts that they get the lions share of the tv audience, and that is true. What they don’t tell you and what the other networks don’t tell you is that the whole number of viewers is decreasing almost exponentially. People are tuning out and turning off.
Bill O’Reilly talking to newspapers about why they are dying is like a cancer patient lecturing a leprosy patient on why they are dying. The fact is they are both DYING!!!!

Apparently you’ve lost all touch with reality. When was the last time you heard an opposing conservative thought on mainstream media?
Fair and balance is what FOX does! It came about and its acceptance is is growing precisely because it presents news the way the fairness doctrine suggested and allowing opposing sides to espouse their views.
And FOX will continue despite the efforts of the intellectually challenged Angelina Jolie and the idiots in Colorado who canceled a debate because it was sponsored by FOX.

June 23rd, 2007 at 10:56 amHow desperate must these newspaper people be to get someone to talk to their group that they have to go into the swamp and pull up O’Lielly to talk to them? One sure sign that we are indeed a sick society when we sink that low!
June 23rd, 2007 at 11:13 amThis man is so delusional. I do agree with him that print news is becoming irrelevant but not for the reason he says. It is becoming irrelevant because it is a wholly owned subsidiary of Corporate America and because they don’t print the news. I quit taking newspapers two years ago when I realized that they were not giving me even half of the story and because I was so disgusted with their right wing slant.
Today I get up in the morning, make myself a latte, and sit in front of my computer and read several blogs and the BBC to get my news. I now feel that I am well informed and I don’t have to pay $12 a month to be uninformed or misinformed. The only downside is that I also eat my breakfast in front of the computer and I have to buy a new keyboard every 6 months or so.

Dear Bruce,
That did not sound like any hospitial I have ever been in or called. Just how is it that I have never heard of this until now? I watch Fox and Friends every morning and that clip has never been shown. I believe it is pure fabrication.
Dear ALL CAPS,
The only thing I can stand in agreement with with you on is your brutally honest admission found in the last part of Line 9 . For the record your disdain for President Bush and America is duley noted, dear. In the future you might keep in mind that using all caps is considered shoting and therefore rude.
I will pray for you. Briefly.
June 24th, 2007 at 3:09 pmMrs. T.D. Gaines-Crockett
The reason why you have never heard of that story is the exact same reason why I don’t watch Fox and Friends.
Fox and Friends is propaganda, it always has been. It was propaganda back when they fired journalists for telling the truth about hormones in your milk, and it is propaganda now.
Go look up Jane Akre and Steve Wilson if you don’t believe me. Fox actually went to court and fought the case with their defense being that they have the right to lie to you. They won on appeal with their argument being that as a news vendor they have the right to lie to you.
CNN, though frequently caught with a strong conservative bias, is a proper news vendor. It isn’t perfect, but it is one heck of a lot more reliable then Fox. There is a reason behind liberals calling Fox, Faux News.
June 24th, 2007 at 3:36 pmBill-O is only partly right, as usual. The only journalists that are hated are journalists like himself, spreading nothing but lies, fear and other bs, serving only the interests of the drive-by right wing nutjobs and presidents. They personally attack others for personal attacks. They claim political agendas are behind the liberal media but fail to mention their own oh so clearly visible agenda. They say liberals can’t see anything good in Bush but they themselves can’t see anything good in liberals. And in the middle of this propaganda they keep bringing up God and Jesus and fail to see why the self-righteous right wing media are losing relevance? Intelligent design my *ss. For crying out loud, these white people have illegally conquered America by the gun- destroying culture and spreading genocide -and are now telling new immigrants that immigration is illegal?! As one white American woman said it: “I don’t go into their country, they shouldn’t come into mine.” Think again, euro-trash, if you can think at all!
June 25th, 2007 at 4:28 amBill is right, about this at least. Many Americans do hate leftist columnists, and leftism in general. You can’t joke that away or make that fact disappear with arrogant blog comments. You guys are *not* popular, despite what you keep telling yourselves. Hard line leftist beliefs maybe socially required on some college campuses and in a handful of ‘activist’ organizations, but they simply don’t resonate with middle America – and they never have. Take a trip into ‘fly over country’ and try spewing your leftwing dogma there and see how popular it is. See how much acceptance you get from those ‘hicks’ and ‘hillbillys’ whom you love so much to bash. They are the majority, not you. This is their country, not yours.
