Interesting article sees Hillary talking about this 3 years ago....

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,285933,00.html

"There’s this crazy thing called the market," Bozell said. "It’s not to

say liberal talk radio has not been in existence. It’s been tried over

and over again, whether it’s ... Mario Cuomo or Doug Wilder or Jim

Hightower or Air America and Al Franken and every single time, it’s a

miserable failure because there’s no market appetite."

Air America — the liberals’ most prominent effort to counter

conservative talk radio, called "talk radio for progressive patriots" —

has featured big names like Al Franken and Jeanine Garofalo. But that

venture filed for bankruptcy last fall in an effort to reorganize. It

was officially taken over by Green Family Media in March and then could

be heard on 70 affiliates reaching a weekly audience of 1.7 million

listeners, according to its Web site. It was producing 19 hours of

original programming daily.

It recently revamped its voice and relaunched Air America 2.0, saying

the likes of Clinton, John Edwards and Barack Obama would be just a few

of its celebrity guests.

Some of the bigger liberal voices on the airwaves in general include:

Thom Hartmann from "The Thom Hartmann Show;" Stephanie Miller of Jones

Radio Networks; Karen Hunter of WWRL in New York; FOX News' Alan Colmes;

and Steve Malzberg of WABC in New York.

But in many major markets at the local level, Bozell said, progressives

are put on the air after liberals raise a ruckus their viewpoint isn't

being heard. But more often than not, he said, "It absolutely bombs and

that’s why they’re not on the air."

He added: "Look at Air America. What more can I say?"

The Center for American Progress released a report Thursday that

identified 75 talk show hosts as either conservative or progressive

(liberal). Of those 75, 53 were identified as conservative (71 percent),

while 22 (29 percent), were identified as progressive.

"The Structural Imbalance of Political Talk Radio" confirmed that talk

radio, one of the most widely used media formats in America, is

dominated by conservatives. It also raised questions about whether

public radio broadcasts are serving the listening needs of Americans.

So let me get this straight libs.... You complain that the country is on the verge of fascism because big business and this administration will do anything for a buck (including go to war). Now you are saying that this radio fairness doctrine has nothing do do with money?!?!? Can't have it both ways.

If it was the other way around, and the airwaves were choked with Progressive propaganda, we liberals would be the first to demand airwave fairness.

And if Gore won like Bush did, we'd have demanded a new election.

I saw a statistic that 90% of radio stations are owned by "conservatives." Saw another article that noted that a radio station will either be liberal/progressive or conservative. They do not mix their hosts and keep with one political view. If in fact this is the case, then the number of nonconservative hosts may not be an indication of anything other than political orientation of the ownership.

In market after market where progressive/liberal talk has beaten Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly, etc., the corporatacry, conservatives, and religious wrong (sic) CAN’T STAND another voice, the voice of truth and fact, and have shut down stations offering liberal/progressive voices, often buying up stations, so I guess it is ‘revenues,’ per se but not in advertising shares, audience share, etc.
Comment by Sandy — June 23, 2007 @ 12:34 am

You ought to be slamming the liberals for selling to the conservatives. Liberals are free to buy and run stations just like conservaties do. Then they can devote all the time they want to liberal programming. Wonder what's stopping em? Maybe the hope that they can use the government to force other stations to give them time? You know, what's yours is mine and all that. ;)

I noticed that the percentage of conservitive verses liberal talk radio in NY was just about even on the map posted yesterday, well that's not so in upstate NY, maybe in the city but not up here in the sticks. We have ONLY rightwing talking heads, from 9:00 am on into the night.

If you live in the city or Ithica NY, you have a choice, other wise it's Right talk radio or NPR

Please tell me that Ed Schultz's radio show isn't one of the most popular. Please.
There is no way he's a progressive either. Far from it!

Ed Schultz doesn't represent liberals. Come one. I can't even stand to listen to him. Can we defend someone worth defending?

The public air waves exist for the common good, and yet when Conservatives have controlled the air waves, they've broadcasted for their own (Corporate) good and discouraged the free flow of ideas. Conservatives manage media as they manage their websites: Conservative trolls post freely on progressive blogs like Think Progress, yet liberals are blocked from posting on comparably popular conservative blogs (like Free Republic).

#8 I don’t buy this one. Radio station owners would have their mothers diary read if it would make them more money.

.......................

Sorry I'm so late to this convo ... Tundra probably posted what many people think is correct. However, the FACTS regarding airing of liberal/progressive vs. neocon/conservative programming shows completely the opposite except in a few cases with (gasp!) ClearChannel which has recognized the tremendous desire for and ability of progressive talk to bring in audiences and revenue. Ed is spot on. And a big kudos to the Center.

In market after market where progressive/liberal talk has beaten Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly, etc., the corporatacry, conservatives, and religious wrong (sic) CAN'T STAND another voice, the voice of truth and fact, and have shut down stations offering liberal/progressive voices, often buying up stations, so I guess it is 'revenues,' per se but not in advertising shares, audience share, etc.

So in Phoenix, for example, the prior liberal/progressive station was taken over by a FIFTH conservative religious station in that market. (These people must be on the fast track to hell, huh?) Many other markets have been taken over by yet another sports talk station. The local community in Phoenix fought back (as they did in Madison) to bring progressive/liberal talk back at KPHX. And what about Boston? They're isn't a liberal market in beantown? Are you effing kidding me?

And who has the story about the station in Ohio where the staff of the progressive station actually were LOCKED OUT by some conservative insider while the station was up and running AirAmerica?

And if you missed it, during Friday's show, Schultz apparently had a call to go onto H&C that evening but when he found out that Hannity wasn't going to be on he told his producer to call back the show and reschedule for when the "A Team" would be on--otherwise, it was a no-go. I couldn't agree more. I've always thought the combo for that show should be Hannity and (James) Carvel--we could watch their veins pop and heads explode in that (ahem) tete-a-tete. Talk about entertainment!

Swell.

When the right wing attacks it's nice to know we have people like you.

I guess you didn't want to hear Harry Reid, Wes Clark, John Sweeny, Dennis Kucinich, John Edwards, or Russ Feingold this last week.

We are fighting the same fight; quit being a hater for hater’s sake.

Ed Schultz? Yuck. I'm a progressive, and he doesn't say anything useful I want to hear. In fact, I pay for XM radio and I really resent that he's in the 12 to 3 spot instead of Tom Hartmann.

This may have been discussed earlier in this thread, but after reading a few waste-of-time posts from trolls, I had to give up reading any other comments... many, I'm sure, were worthwhile.
