Next week, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales will make his first-ever visit to Seattle as attorney general. While there, he will deliver a 45-minute speech “on the Justice Department’s efforts to protect intellectual property and combat cybercrime.”
The speech, which is free and open to the public, was organized by TechNet Northwest. It is also being sponsored and promoted by the most prominent creationism advocacy organization in the country: the Discovery Institute.
One of the Institute’s main goals is to replace evolutionary science in public schools with “intelligent design”:
The Discovery Institute has quietly positioned itself as the most effective and politically savvy group pushing a religious agenda in America’s public school science classes. [...]
The Institute enthusiastically endorses what law professor and ID champion Philip Johnson calls the “wedge” strategy. The plan is straightforward: use intelligent design as a wedge to undermine evolution with scientific-sounding arguments and thereby advance a conservative religious-political agenda.
The institute’s main financial backer, savings and loan heir Howard Ahmanson, spent 20 years on the board of the Chalcedon Foundation, “a theocratic outfit that advocates the replacement of American civil law with biblical law.”
Discovery’s attacks on evolution have been discredited by leading scientists. The National Academy of Sciences, “the nation’s most prestigious scientific organization,” declares evolution “one of the strongest and most useful scientific theories we have.” President Bush’s science adviser John Marburger calls it “the cornerstone of modern biology.”
While it’s unclear what interest the Institue has in promoting a Gonzales speech on intellectual property rights and cybercrime, there’s no doubt that they would like to curry his favor in order to get “the Justice Department to support legal efforts to change” public school curriculum to include “intelligent design.”
If the book of Genesis is true, then who did Adam and Eve’s sons marry and eventually have children with? The only other woman around was their mother.
So, within the first few chapters of Genesis, we have two sons committing incest with their mother, then one of them kills the other out of jealousy.
I guess Christians these days consider that “a good start”.

Just another example of how truth can be bended and molded by how well you can manipulate the media. This speech…and those who follow it are helping to add legitimacy to a completely invalid argument.

June 23rd, 2007 at 1:41 pmIf evolution isn’t true, why do I have an appendix? God put a useless organ in the human body whose sole purpose is to get inflamed, rupture and possibly kill people?
If God is an intelligent designer, why is it that humans designed a camera vastly superior to the human eye 100 years ago?
June 23rd, 2007 at 1:41 pmSo NOW the question is: Who else funds the Discovery Institute besides the aforementioned Howard Ahmanson? The later, who wants Biblical law to prevail…just like the Islamists.
June 23rd, 2007 at 1:42 pmIf there is a case for intelligent design to be made, Gonzo is not the most qualified to deliver the message. The only intelligence he has was designed for a rock.

June 23rd, 2007 at 1:46 pmIntelligent Design?
These things are intelligent?:
Male breasts and nipples.
Appendix.
Backward design of the eye.
Pelvis with an oval opening that makes child birth painful and difficult.
Pseudogenes (genes that exist but do not function).
Coccyx (tail bone).
Excrement.
Dual urinary tract/semen tract (urine kills spermatzoa).
Wisdom teeth.
Tonsils.
Curved neck.
We’ll start with that…

There comes a time when you have to take a stand. Our lawless government is in need of bitch slapping. Since we don’t have habeus corpus to hamper the government from taking me away forever, that’s a risk…and one I will willingly take.
There are times when you have to stand up for what you believe. And I believe that if regular Americans don’t start to do something to take back our country, we are going to lose it forever.
June 23rd, 2007 at 2:12 pmDiscovery Institute? WTF?!?
Honestly I can’t figure out the connection btwn Discovery’s ID/Creationist BS and Gonzales DOJ. It would be a gigantic stretch to think they can have any real influence on the DOJ to do anything about inserting creationist propaganda into public schools. I realize that’s what they said with your quote from the WaPost, but given the most recent Federal court ruling in Pennsylvania, plus I just don’t see how Gonzales can do anything realistic to curry their bologna, I don’t know if there’s much to worry about on the surface.
Hate to put my tin foil hat on here, but there’s gotta be something more behind this one. More often than not, it’s got a few $ signs involved, and usually underneath the table.

June 23rd, 2007 at 2:31 pmDon’t be so paranoid. As has been stated multiple times, the Drudge Report had a link to this site concerning the talk radio study. June 23rd, 2007 at 2:35 pmI don’t understand women christians either. To be subjogated and subrogated as chattel is simply unfathomable to me.
What I find even sadder is women who oppose abortion, many who weren’t around in the good old shove-a hanger-up-your-crotch days. As long as women are controlled (and forced childbearing is definitely control) women will always be 2nd class citizens who are by far the majority of poor people with little resources or aspects.
All of this is control. Religion is control. Forced reproduction is control (notice how contraception is just as evil as abortion). Lack of or inferior education is control. Just as is the rich v. poor. It’s all about control.

June 23rd, 2007 at 2:42 pmHey Alberto:
See if you can fit this into your speech:
Spinosaurus (meaning “spine lizard”) was a genus of theropod dinosaur that lived in what is now North Africa, from the Albian to early Cenomanian stages of the Cretaceous Period, about 95 to 93 million years ago.
It is the largest of all carnivorous dinosaurs, even larger than Tyrannosaurus rex and Giganotosaurus. If the estimates are correct, Spinosaurus would be the longest theropod, measuring 16 – 18 m long (52.5 – 59.1 ft), around 6 m tall (20 ft), and reached weights up to 9 tons.
HOW’D THEY GET A PAIR OF THOSE THINGS ON NOAH’S ARK…AND IF THEY DID, WHY DIDN’T THEY EAT EVERY OTHER ANIMAL IN SIGHT?

Thanks for asking! I am about 95% which is 200% better than before.
The major problem has been in this Country since the beginning. The Constitution calls for the separation of Church and State. Leaving the moral issues to the Church and the governmental issues to the State. Human nature is such that there is a normal separation between the two: a Government cannot legislate morality. Particularly when the Sitting Government is immoral to the core. You are right when you say the whole thing is just a matter of control. King George the Dumb knows and cares little, if any, about the thoughts and feelings of the citizens of this Country. His only driving force is greed which he can only satiate by controlling every thing that he is told he cannot control. The man is criminally insane and should be incarcerated for life or hung as he had Sadam hung. There is little difference between the two.

I suspect, regretfully, that we will be hearing another performance some time soon. He seemed to be having too much fun. The only reason he left so abruptly is because his mommy said it was night-night time.
June 23rd, 2007 at 3:30 pmOkay. I’ve gotta take my daughter to a Dr.s appt [nasty infection on her hand] , then the boy has a birthday party. I think afterward, I’m gonna pop The Fountainhead in the VCR & tune out the world. [and no - that's not a euphemism for anything]

I know, the one thing that seem to mess up is game is when I mentioned Mark Foley (I’m AVGVSTINVS) he was gone for a solid 5 – 10 min. looking for an article about a gay Democrat. Oboboy is really sensitive to facts about Rep. corruption, it is his “Achilles Heel.”

June 23rd, 2007 at 3:36 pmWelcome, Daniel. I try to take comments individually, cause we’re never gonna agree on everything. So, if I call you on the carpet here and there, that’s my way of saying WTF ARE YOU THINKING. No, I mean WELCOME! ;)

There were obviously some genuine posters there from the right, but it was, mostly a clusterf*ck. Or a circle-jerk, whichever. I commented a few times, and actually got one or two non-hijacking responses amongst the other trollshite.

The posts were coming at about 300/hr. I’m a little surprised it didn’t shut down the entire site. Perhaps it was described as a “cluster-jerk”…
Take a look at Gremlins sometime. It’s a pretty funny moive, especially the scenes when the gremlins run amok at the end.

The connection between the Justice Department and the Discovery Institute has to do with rules of evidence. The evidence for voter fraud in the 2004 gubernatorial election, for example, is substantively similar to the evidence for a creator or “designer” at work in the evolution of life on Earth.

I’ve been seeing those, too, and I laugh every time. I love the pictures they use of people when they’re angry or very happy. They’re never flattering, but the ones of Laura Bush all pissed off are great. She has that look that all husbands fear. (”Uh-oh. I guess I’ll find out sooner or later what I’m in trouble for.”)
Butu I do hope it’s true. She’ll stick it out until January 21, 2009, when she moves into her own place. It wouldn’t surpriose me if she went ahead and arranged a post-dated divorce. (The whole thing inspired me to write another song parody, but I need to work on it a bit before I get around to posting it.)
June 23rd, 2007 at 11:11 pmAccording to Barack Obama, you folks don’t really have a problem with Christianity at all. It’s not Christians that you dislike or even evangelical Christians. It’s only conservative Christians. I’m really glad Obama cleared that up. Now y’all don’t have to bash Christianity anymore, only conservatives. I always wondered how it was that y’all were able to stomach Patriotic Liberal Christian. I assumed it was because he never defended Christianity, but it’s actually because he is a liberal. Who’d a thought? ;)
Obama: “…At every opportunity, they’ve told evangelical Christians that Democrats disrespect their values and dislike their church, while suggesting to the rest of the country that religious Americans care only about issues like abortion and gay marriage, school prayer and intelligent design,” according to an advance copy of his speech.”

Actually “conservative” and “evangical” are used to avoid calling these so-called Christians FUNDAMENTALIST. That’s right. Just as dangerous to this country and main-stream Christianity as fundamentalist Islamist are in many country.
The fundamentalist christians, I call them christianistas, aren’t true believers. They use religion as a crutch, or as a set of brass knuckles depending on the situation. Anyone in this country who calls for the replacement of our democracy with a christian theocracy or “God’s law” are enemies of the state.
I believe they should be arrested and detained for questioning about their hidden militias, weapons, supporters, etc. They should loose their tax exempt status. Calling for the destruction of our government is not a religious activity. It’s not even christian, as are most things these fundy’s do.
I believe that AG the AG is one of these people and he needs to impeached and charged with treason!!!
Howard Ahmanson has called for the destruction of our democracy. He is an enemy of this government and the people!!!!

He can’t do that…in his world women are second class citizens…here to serve their men…
This is another reason that fundy christies must be resisted. They hate women. The Southern Baptist Convention (a possible Jesus cult) declared that women must submit to their husbands. It’s ph*cking church law!!! In this country? In the USA? Give me a break!!!!!!!
The only reason white-male fundy christies put up with women is that they can have sex with them without be called gay.
If gays were to disappear tommorow, women would be next in line for the hatred, intolerance and political/social wilderness now reserved for gays and lesbians. You can see it. No abortion, no divorce, no freedom…submit, submit, submit!!!!
