This morning on Fox News Sunday, Weekly Standard editor William Kristol defended Vice President Cheney’s decision to exempt himself from an executive order designed to safeguard classified national security information.
Kristol said the exemptions for the president and vice president were “reasonable enough.” He called it “a pain in the neck” to have “some bureaucrat” from the National Archives “come and inspect your safe to see whether you’re locking it up properly each night.”
NPR’s Juan Williams snapped back, noting that there is no text in the executive order that actually exempts Bush or Cheney. “This is all a dodge, this is a game,” Williams said, in order to “keep Dick Cheney in some kind of secured undisclosed bunker of his mind so he can’t let the American people know what’s going on with their government.” Williams charged, “He won’t tell people who’s visiting his house, who’s visiting his office. Scooter Libby is letting people know who works for the CIA as an agent. This is ridiculous.”
Watch it:
Kristol was the only member of the Fox News Sunday panel to defend Cheney. Fox News Washington managing editor Brit Hume called the White House explanation a “dumb excuse,” and NPR’s Mara Liasson said it “doesn’t make any sense.”
Transcript:
WALLACE: Al Gore complied with this. So did Dick Cheney for the first two years. Why on earth would they make a fight over this?
KRISTOL: They like to fight to fight to preserve the prerogatives of the White House. And it is a pain in the neck having some bureaucrat from the bureau of archives come and inspect your safe to see whether you’re locking it up properly each night. I remember that when I was the vice president’s chief of staff, and I complied. But if the president wants to exempt his own office and the vice president’s office from that, that’s reasonable enough. There’s no reason the archivists have to investigate the security procedures in the vice president’s office.
WILLIAMS: Maybe they have a reason because he stopped complying with the law.
KRISTOL: There’s no law.
WILLIAMS: Yes, there’s an executive order —
KRISTOL: The president understands to have exempted his own office and the vice president’s office.
WILLIAMS: The president has not written anything about this, as Brit has said. He didn’t amend the law. And so what you have is, not only is it that there’s classified documents — we don’t know where they go, what happens to them. E-mails disappear in this White House, and you say, what happened to the e-mails? ‘Oh, no, we have a private account.’ This is all a dodge, this is a game, in order to, I guess, keep Dick Cheney in some kind of secured undisclosed bunker of his mind so he can’t let the American people know what’s going on with their government and how decisions are made. He won’t tell people who’s visiting his house, who’s visiting his office. Scooter Libby is letting people know who works for the CIA as an agent. This is ridiculous.
HUME: One of the more compelling indictments i’ve heard. Well done, Juan.
wow, its gotta be bad if Mara Liasson cant catapault the propaganda.

Little Billy Kristol pinched the biggest loaf I have ever seen on FoxNoise Sunday when he suggested that GDumbya inherited a dysfunctional executive branch from Clinton. What a crock. All the dysfunction in this government has been manufactured by GDumbya and his Keystone Kops.
June 24th, 2007 at 11:24 amIt was worth seeing. Even Brit Hume cracked up at Juan Williams’ “bunker of the mind” remark. If Brit thinks Cheney’s “dumb,” I believe we’re on the verge of a Great Awakening.
There is no defending Cheney on this. He wants to occupy a quantum superposition that is both Executive and Legislative, yet neither. He’s also the proud conservative grandfather of a fatherless Lesbian/test-tube homunculus…which proves he’s already adept at quantum logic.

#18 - you are probably right. But that is because they get their news from the 30 second sound bite news on TV and maybe their local newspaper. I know that neither of my local newspapers has covered this mess. Until we do something about the concentration of corporate ownership of our media, the people are going to remain dumb and uninformed.
I ask some people I know why they don’t pay more attention to what is happening in the world around them and they mostly say “I’m too busy”. My reply is “While you are ‘too busy’, our government is made an extension of the Republic party, your job is getting shipped overseas, or they are bringing someone from overseas here to do your job and your rights to privacy are being taken away from you”. I am sad to say that that elicits a blank stare kind of like saying “so what”. I do believe, though, that they will wake up enough around election time and pay enough attention to realize that we can’t elect another Republic as president if we have any hope for this country to survive.
June 24th, 2007 at 11:45 amF*ck you, Kristol. Bush/Cheney built the largest bureacracy the U.S. Government has ever seen, the Office of Hoomeland Security. They should be inspecting his ass hairs every friggin’ day.
June 24th, 2007 at 11:46 amThe vice president simply presides over the Senate (when the mood hits him), and can only particilate as a tie-breaking voter. he has no other role whatsoever, so he cannot be said to be a member of the Legislative Branch. Thd office of vice president is defined in Article 2, where the Executive Branch is defined.
In addition, it is incorrect for anyone to believe that presiding over the Senate is his “sole” responsibility. He also has to be prepared to assume the office and powers of the president should the need arise. Therefore, his responsibilities are more executive then legislative in nature.
Vice President Cheney is a member of the Executive Branch of our government and he is subject to the laws and executive orders pertaining to all members of that branch. Open and shut.

And right he is! However, it is the law and many thousands of us have been subjected to that “pain” for many years. The difference being that if any of us failed to maintain the required security and failed the inspection we were subject to serious penalties up to and including loss of our jobs, fines, and imprisonment.

anyone have a template for the hierarchy of lunacy? and which is the shooter’s real mouthpiece? by going back and analyzing shooter’s tool’s statements, we may find when the government was hijacked and what reporters were complicit? (I mean, which ones clearly were told by and told what to say for the VP)

I taught for two semesters at a university. I taught an estate planning course for seniors and graduate students. I hated it. By then they are all too jaded. It is difficult to convince a 21 year old that there may be more in them that they realize. With teenagers you can infect them with positive attitudes about themselves. You can teach them to find what their strengths are and how to overcome weaknesses.
Everyone who knows me says that I will not go a week without working before I am certifiable. That may be true but I am willing to risk it!

June 24th, 2007 at 2:40 pmHow long is beer aged?
Comment by Jules
Depends on the beer and what you mean by “aged”. Beers that are naturally conditioned in the bottle and have a fairly high alcohol content (e.g. Belgian abbey and Trappist ales) can be as interesting to cellar as good wines, although very few will stand up to decades of aging.
Most beer is at its best when it’s fresh, which is why even Oly tasted pretty damn good in the tasting room at the brewery.

I teach geometry. I tell my students that I wish my pen had spell check because I am the worlds worst. I thank (put in your choice of higher being here) for spell check!
I explain to my students that I make mistakes and to please correct me when they see that I have. This teaches them a lesson that you neocons refuse to believe. We are human and therefore make mistakes. Just because someone is a teacher, parent, or president, does not make them immune from making mistakes. It also teaches them that they have a voice that will be listened to. Another lesson you neocons have apparently not learned!

Exactly right. This is an important point that we should be making. Again and again! Although it is fun to say Rethugs etc., it does not come across to the public in a meaningful way. THESE ARE NOT REPUBLICANS. They are neocons! The uninformed public does not understand that, and they buy the neocon “frame” that they are. To them, all this is about, is partisan politics.
Lakoff is right. We need to reframe the conversation with the public so that the truth is seen, and our value system comes through. Like using “invasion and occupation” instead of “war.” When I talk to conservatives I like to say this:
“The Republican Party doesn’t exist anymore! The people in power now who call themselves “Republicans” are not that at all. They are neoconservatives. These people, like parasites living off its host, have destroyed the party from within. If I were a Republican who loves my country I would be angry as hell at what these bastards have done to my party.”
How funny. A petty and jealous troll whines and rages that Jules and I exchanged a couple of brief posts about ourselves and then goes on to clog the thread repeating the miscontrued content those posts. LOL
Try myspace.com troll - maybe you’ll make a friend or two. It seems to work for my 16 -17 year old students.
And, like Jules said - if you don’t like what we have to say, skip our posts. The First Amendment affords us the right to say whatever we like, as long as it harms no one. It equally affords you the right to skip them. It does not, however, afford you the right to shut us up. And you won’t. No matter how big of a 4-year old temper tantrum you pitch.
The only one you can change is yourself. So start by changing YOUR behvaior that’s not working for you in this equation… And it’s a pretty long list.

Unfortunately no. You are right, of course. Unfortunately, fear of work and change appears to be endemic to sites once they are up and running. And of course there is the expense, downtime etc. along with a myriad of excuses that inhibits improvement. I often wonder where attention to detail went. The concept of “value” changed in the 80s. It used to stand for a combination of “quality, price and service.” The “new” definition is Value=Price. Quality and service were strangled in their beds by the technique of assumption. (”Hey, all quality and service is the same, you know? Like a can of soup is the same where ever you buy it, right? So, what ever is cheaper is your best value!) Totally false reasoning, but the public has bought it hook line and sinker.

Right you are. Machiavelli wrote the neocon handbook and Leo Strauss buffed it up to “modern” standards. The main change is that the rulers now are the invisible monied corporate interests instead of a Prince who is visable. The president is a puppet run by midlevel neocon thugs (Cheney and company, while behind these ideological runts are the “ruling”-in Machiavelli’s view- philosophers like Irving and Bill Kristol, Michael Ledeen, Charles Krauthammer, Podhoretz etc.) who are well compensated for their “work.” I believe that the “conspiracy theory” about the Bildebergers and the Tri Lateral Commission plotting the course of the world, is not that far off the mark. It is scary to look into what they affect and who are their invited members. “Skull and Bones”, the training ground them, is small frat stuff in comparrison.

Thisi is what you get when religion becomes a shield in defense of anything. It’s happening in Iraq and here. These people have no answers because to them anyone who brings out the band and waves the flag to a christian tune is right no matter what. Thankfully, their numbers are relatively small compared to the rest of us who recognize the dissonance and have had enough.

Look, its obvious that you don’t believe what you said (”Which left PLENTY of ROOM for the REAL CONSERVATIVES out there…”) or you would not pose this question thinking that I could not find 5 of them. When you decide to calm down, a serious discussion is possible. Perhaps another day. I’ll wait. We progressives need to reason and think. Not fly off the emotional handle and rant, especially at each other.

June 24th, 2007 at 6:27 pmthe history books, unless they get burned by booshKKKo, will read “… and the populace played on, until the coast cities drowned, tornado alley blew up, hurricanes decimated the gulf coast, the top 1% started living in climate controlled bunkers and with king cheney III installed armed guards employed by halliburton patrol electrified fences keeping the riff raff enslaved, unprotected and undervalued. Then someone finally woke up and said, “He did WHAT?!”
We deserve everything we get if we allow Bullseye Dick another shot at our freedom. Next he will ask his loyalists to do the ol’ stiffarm hitler salute to give him inspiration. He really only has to remember o’l andrew jackson or richard nixon for that, but he doesn’t need it, as he is a veritable fount of bad faith actions, sneering all the way. Endless evil is the bush legacy, the history books may burn but the story will be told nonetheless, just keep posting, the Deleter can’t delete everything.
