Former U.S. Interior Secretary Gale Norton is urging a federal judge to show leniency in sentencing her former top deputy, J. Steven Griles, who pleaded guilty to “lying to the Senate about his relationship with convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.” Norton also received $50,000 from Jack Abramoff, and the former lobbyist funneled more than $500,000 to one of Norton’s former political aides, Italia Federici, to gain access to her department.
Would someone please tell me what this country is coming to when we hear people in (or previously in) government asking for pardons and leniency for people who lie to the senate? I’m sorry, MAXIMUM sentences to show others the ramifications of lying. There have to be ramifications somewhere along the line.
June 25th, 2007 at 5:37 pmGale Nor on belongs in prison.
June 25th, 2007 at 5:37 pmYou know, I find it funny that we will lock up people for 15 years for a joint, but when someone is a threat to national security, all of a sudden then want leniency. Give me a break.
June 25th, 2007 at 5:40 pmYawn. A crook pleading for another crook is not news.
Now, if the judge is lenient in the sentencing, now that will be news.
June 25th, 2007 at 5:40 pmLeniency? Pul-ease! These liars need to get the maximum sentence for their crimes. Now let’s take a gander into Tom Feeney’s dealings with Abramoff! It’s time to get that thug under oath, too.
June 25th, 2007 at 5:40 pmMama viper defending her babies.
(with sincerest apologies to vipers everywhere…)
June 25th, 2007 at 5:41 pmYeah, please be lenient so he won’t cut a deal to disclose my illegal activities.
June 25th, 2007 at 5:41 pmAs KKKarl told the rest of the GOPThugs, just curl up into the fetal position and start whining….
June 25th, 2007 at 5:41 pmGriles lied under oath and should go to prison for his lying. Furthermore he should be sentenced to a real prison and serve time in the general population with other real prisoners. Griles did more harm to our nation than most prisoners in the general population; his crime is greater than those who serve time in prisons such as Attica or Folsom.
Send Griles to jail and send him there to serve hard time. Doing so is perfectly reasonable given his crimes; the fact that such a sentence will provide defacto ethics reform is just an added benefit of such a sentence. Not only that, but it will lay the groundwork for sentencing other career criminals such as Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Hadley, Fieth, Delay and others.
June 25th, 2007 at 5:43 pmAs a Colorado citizen, I know first-hand that Gale Norton was the most corrupt person to serve as Lt. Governor here as well as in her role as SecofInterior. She pandered to Big Oil then and is doing so now, as the highest paid lobbyist for Shell/Exxon, a job she got as payment for her work to give away the farm on Federal lands and offshore
If she isn’t also brought up on charges, then Shell and their buddies have done their job on DOJ again.
June 25th, 2007 at 5:48 pmItalia Federici~
June 25th, 2007 at 5:50 pmGeez, we got the Sopranos goin on here.
RICO!
June 25th, 2007 at 5:52 pmJune 25th, 2007 at 5:53 pm
Can you imagine the outcry from the right wing if a dem asked for leniency for William Jefferson?
June 25th, 2007 at 6:25 pmWhy is the simple rule of law so difficult for the repubs to understand? I thought they were the ‘law and order’ party. Well, are they or are they not? I thought the repubs were patriots and loyal citizens of a country bound by the laws of our constitution – well, not so much, huh? There is no honor in the republican party, only unquestioning adherance to the party line – just like the nazi’s they are. God, I fear for the country.
June 25th, 2007 at 6:29 pmHow long will this Abramoff case drag out.
I’m proud to see it’s still bearing fruit but why are all these cases taking so long to resolve? Martha Stewart was tried, convicted and served her sentence after the Abramoff started hitting the fan.

GONZALES!!!!!!!
June 25th, 2007 at 6:56 pmHang the crooked bastard, then come back and indict and convict and hang the crooked Gayle Norton.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:09 pmLet’s stop playing games with these stupid politicians.

I’m hoping that all of the delays, Plame investigation included, is because everybody’s waiting for the next administration when there won’t be a Bush in office to pardon them.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:18 pmSentence this moron Griles to the max! Who cares what a useless un-American like Gale Norton thinks. Both are crooked, lying c0ck suckers.
Useless to anyone here except their undertakers!!!
June 25th, 2007 at 7:31 pmThere is one reason Gale says this. She is next.
June 25th, 2007 at 9:47 pmWhy’z it that when a Demo is caught in a situation, the response is to throw the book at them, but when a Republican is caught in the webs of Delay, Abramov, Scooter Libby, etc. they deserve leniency as being loyal americans ?
June 25th, 2007 at 10:32 pmWith Norton’s corrupt credentials the judge would likely trust my take more than hers. And I say, “throw the book at him. Max him out in slammer.”
