CNN Dumps Michael Moore For Paris Hilton

parisking.jpg Yesterday, CNN proudly announced that it has scored the first post-jail interview with Paris Hilton. To make room for Paris on Wednesday, CNN canceled its interview with Michael Moore about his new health care documentary SiCKO:

Hotel heiress and reality TV star Paris Hilton will give her first post-jail interview on CNN’s “Larry King Live” on Wednesday, the show’s spokeswoman said on Saturday.

“She will be on for the hour,” Bridget Leininger told Reuters. “We had (filmmaker) Michael Moore originally scheduled for that time.”

CNN, the “most trusted name in Paris news,” continues to sink to new lows in its “assault on reason.” Hilton is the latest “serial obsession,” though the network recently hired a reporter devoted to “covering things like Britney, as well as the Michael Jackson memorabilia.” Now CNN has ditched coverage of America’s broken health care system in favor of an hour-long interview of an incarcerated socialite.

ThinkProgress spoke with Moore’s team, who confirmed that CNN has not yet rescheduled the interview. SiCKO, which opens nationwide this Friday, sheds light on the health care crisis that the media covers poorly, when it covers it at all.

UPDATE: ThinkProgress has confirmed that Moore’s interview with Larry King has been rescheduled for Friday.

Digg It!

This is not an accident, folks. Talk about deliberately trivializing an important issue.

    What’s more sick than Paris?

  3. ForTruth says:

It’s all about ratings. They are just responding to what viewers would prefer. I blame the general populous.

Exactly spot on, why aren’t more networks than CNN interviewing Paris?

  5. missmolly says:

Hmmmmm — health care is irrelevant. Shallow socialites impact our daily lives. Up is down. Black is white. War is peace. Journalism is dead.

  6. BlueArkansas says:

If ever anyone wanted to understand how idiots like Shrub could get elected in this country, look no further. We are a nation preoccupied with disposable culture, fifteen-minute celebrity, and instant material gratification. Add that to the anti-intellecutalism proliferating for the last three decades in the United States, and you have the recipe for an uninformed, apathetic, magpie electorate. Disgusting.

  7. Anne says:

I hate to think that this drivel is what the masses prefer! But, you’re probably right. I’m still going to e-mail CNN and let them know that they do have viewers with IQs above 40, and that we are highly disappointed. Please do the same- e-mail Celebrity News Network and tell them that you’re not watching this garbage. Maybe they’ll get the hint.
    Or maybe not…

  8. Godfry Daniel says:

Anyone who will watch this upcoming show is an idiot. But CNN’s ratings will soar.

  9. Krazny says:

Paris does look better in a mini-dress then Michael Moore. Just my two cents hehe

I used to argue (in a friendly fashion) with the bouncer at my local pub on if politics or sports was actually more important in his life. He was a HS coach, and it was a sports bar, so his argument was sports was his day job, and that the crowd at the bar was dependent on the games that were on that night, and consequently his share of the tips. I couldn’t get him to see past that into taxes or wars or the bills/issues that the dominant party gets to bring up in the congress.

And the sad part was he was actually knowledgeable (as compared to the average American) in politics and voted regularly, he just thought sports was more important to his life.

CORRECTION — Paris does look better in a mini-dress than Michael Moore. Just my two cents hehe

This is just one more small indication of how “dumbed-down” the population has become.

It is “a thousand small cuts” that has laid this nation low.

    Interesting thing:

The paper where I work released a new daily not-too-long-ago. They did all the market research and all of that to tell us what people wanted.

The thing people identified as wanting most in a new paper was business news. Breaking news actually came second to business news.

The thing people wanted least, was celebrity news.

I get the feeling there might just be a reason why America’s news industry is losing money right now.

  20. Kaye2 says:

Well, damn, folks. What’s more important than ParisNicholeSpearsBradJolieOJ? You all just got YOUR priorities mixed up. 30. CompTROLLER V-1 says:

It’s funny, I remember a scene from Moore’s other film, “The Big One,” where the blimp was slumped in his car stuffing some burger or fish fillet down his throat. These days, he’s complaining about “health care.”

A good sequence of events. Inevitable, really.

  31. HeartlandLiberal says:

Dear Larry King (submitted with cnn.com web site),

So. Michael Moore makes a movie on the health crisis facing this nation. Nurses nationwide show up to stand with him for improved healthcare. We have MILLIONS of Americans with NO health insurance. We have a crisis facing us that is out of control.

So you throw him off the show for Paris Hilton. Whose claims to fame pretty much boil down to 1) being born rich and 2) spreading her legs and humping her boyfriend in a video that was widely circulated on the Internet.

Why do I not watch CNN, or any of the mainstream media anymore? Perhaps because I, like the spirit of Thomas Jefferson, VOMIT at what I see you have turned the media into: panem and circenses, bread and circus to manipulate the ignorant masses, sexual titillation, tabloid journalism, nothing exists if there is not a picture of it being blown up or beaten or in tears.

History is not going to treat the role of the mainstream media during these dark hours of our history kindly. Nor is it going to treat the enablers of this descent into an Orwellian media nightmare kindly either.

Frankly, you make me want to puke.

Market research would probably show the exact reverse.

Think about it: You can have a guy who is famous for stirring controversy, who puts forward solid arguments in the form of film, who has a way with words, and who is popularly considered one of the great influences of his era.

Or you can have a vaguely unnatractive girl who is famous for being famous.

    Which do you pick?

  37. Mark @ News Corpse says:

In case it has slipped anyone’s attention, CNN is owned by the same parent company as TMZ.com, the celebrity webloid that is hyping all things Paris.

Note also that King is also devoting tonight’s program to Paris. That’s 40% (so far) of his airtime this week. Look for King to make numerous citations of TMZ in both programs. It is all about cross-promotion. And be on the lookout for other news that is overshadowed by this tripe. I have been suspicious of this tactic and wrote a piece addressing it last week:

That you thought of the latter speaks volumes.

  42. Comrade Rutherford says:

ForTruth, This has NOTHING to do with ratings. Donohue’s revived show in 2003 proved that canard to be false.

Phil Donohue was given a talk show on MSNBC and it quickly became that outlet’s top rated show, because he was talking about important things in the lead up to Bush’s immoral war on the civilians of Iraq.

His show was cancelled in mid-season at the top of the ratings charts because the corporate overseers at MSNBC are not in the business of informing We, The People. They wanted propanagnda, they wanted to make sure the president’s lies about Iraq were pushed on us unchallenged by reality.

These media outlets are all in the busniess of diseminating blatantly false propaganda in order to prevent We, The People from demanding our government change ‘business as usual’.

CNN ordered Moore off the air and replaced him with Paris Hilton specifically to preclude any discussion of how egregiously wrong US health care really is.

It was once, not too long ago, the best news channel in the world. It was America’s great homage to the truth, something Americans could be proud of. CNN was, and CNN International still is to some extent, a news institution respected worldwide.

Now it is turning into a source of national shame as the rest of the world slowly switches over to BBC and Sky, CNN International’s English competitors.

Is it any wonder that Americans, who once had this great symbol of America’s fight for the turth, are a mite bit annoyed at how it is being turned into a celebrity news rag?

Using the mattress to force the water out of the commode so one can use it as a means of communications between floors?

I hate to think how many millions of young women that are gonna watch this wealthy welfare recipient be rewarded for breaking the law and possibly imitate such behavior. Will Madonna and Brittney will soon be re-inventing themselves as inmates as well?

    What a non-story. What a travesty.

I never watched her movie or her Paris’ version of the Jackass show. I seldom watch TV and when Paris does come on I change the channel. I can know all about her and the Alien babies in the checkout line without ever reading the tabloid trash. And thats exactly where interviews with Paris belongs: In the tabloids.

  68. Rosencrantz says:

Wow. A completely worthless story being continued by CNN and instead of putting Paris against someone who will ask her real, relevant questions about her spoiled sense of priveledge and why we should believe she’s “seen the light” after only 3 weeks of prison, she goes on Larry King, master of the softball question.

In fact, King’s questions are soft idiotic and pointless most of the time I wouldn’t even call them softballs. More like verbal farts. He’ll ask her awesome questions like “how are you”, “why is the media so fascinated with you,” “what are your plans for the future,” and “why are you so cool”?

  70. Daryll says:

Listening to Paris Hilton talk about being incarcerated is more important than listening to Michael Moore (who has no relevance regarding governmental/economical issues). Michael Moore only want to degrade the GOP by stating that we are not doing enough about healthcare. Paris interview will be a perfect example for our future. Hopefully, her interview will influence other children, teenagers and young adults to walk the straighgt path, stop committing criminal acts, and to better educate themselves and help others in society. Michael Moore wants to spew his only filthy propaganda. Michael Moore, I have heard that you frequent numerous progressive blogs. If you are currently on this blog, Jesus does not like what you are doing. Also, the bible says that your body is God’s temple. Apparently, you are not taking care of your body. Gluttony is a sin. Mike, in order to be blessed, stop eating when you are not hungry and incorporate some cardio into your life. Once you begin this process, give your life to Christ and stop spewing irrelevant propaganda, Jesus will bless you. Mike, there is a divine reason why you were bumped by Paris.

“Yes. Damn those businessmen and corporations who create jobs and wealth.Comment by MAF54″

You’re right, they do create wealth, for themselves. Most of the rich people in this country got that way off the backs of the American workers. But, when they found it was cheaper to take their business over-seas, they could care less about the American worker they just made unemployed. At one time Hewlett Packard was a great company, when Hewlett and Packard still worked there. They said that their employees were their greatest asset. Take away our employees and all we have is an empty building. And at that time they took very good care of their employees. They never had to advertise for new employees since they always had lots of resumes to choose from. But, HP is not that company today. They have joined all the other corporations who see their employees as a liability rather than an asset and threat their employees like dirt.

There is something very wrong with the direction this country is heading. Something 76% of the people in this country agree with me about. Now, it’s time for the 76% to get off their rear ends and do something about it!

Where in your demented universe is there any evidence that Paris Hilton will be a role model for young women? Maybe the “accidentally” released porn video with her boyfriend? Or the drunk driving? Or the glorification of obscene wealth and privilege? Yours is a weird and unlikely God, Daryll, who cares more for a spoiled brat than for the health and lives of Americans.

  77. theswan says:

CNN and the others know just how to “dumb down” American society. This dumbing down is just an extention of George W Bush’s “no child left behind” university. Paris before health care. Wow! No one wants this, but the powers to be see the need to keep people uninformed of the important issues that face this country. And just who is twisting the arm of the media to remove Michael? I wouldn’t be the pharma insurance types would it?

In your face nonsense like this may well backfire big time. Most people are savy enough to see right through this and demand better.

  78. Tomazulob says:

Let’s see, Michael Moore wants to make everybody aware of the Health Care issues and looked to CNN, Corporate Network News, to help spread the word. Most of the rich people in this country got that way off the backs of the American workers. But, when they found it was cheaper to take their business over-seas, they could care less about the American worker they just made unemployed.

First you blame the “rich people” for getting all their money off the backs of the American workers, and then you cry about them leaving the country. So which way do you want it? Do you want them in America or not?

Besides, don’t you think that the people who take the risks by setting up a business and actually give people jobs should be rewarded more richly than the people who’re doing their jobs? That’s what’s always irked me in the “money off the backs of the workers” argument. A boss should get more money than an employee.

DRxJ, Mike’s obesity problem is because of personal issues. Also, Paris has sinned, but she has recently found Jesus. When was the last time Mike ceased the excessive consumption of food? When was the last time that you saw Mike on a treadmill? On a serious note, he is one burger away from a heart-attack.

After all it’s a subject which doesn’t even affect them. Right?
And here’s a hot tip for your reporters there!
This morning about a dozen skanky chicks got let out of The Multnomah County Jail here in Portland Oregon . If you hurry you might be able to get one of them to appear on your Internationally televised “News” show too?
    Good Bye CableNewsNetwork.

Michael Moore recently lost about 30 pounds having discovered “fruit and vegetable”. Paris found Jesus having found a judge who was not buying her crap. You bible thumping, closeted gays are the worst hypcrites out there.

    To squegeebooo –

Sorry it took awhile to get back to you (real work intruded). I can see in your example of the pub owner how sports would matter more to him, and I suspect that there are those who are genuinely more vested in the doings of Paris Hilton than of Michael Moore — especially those who are impacted more by drunk-driving and probation violation laws than by the current state of health care.

I suspect, though, that it’s a matter of what’s more entertaining and what people will watch. And entertainment junkies would rather watch Paris Hilton describe her life behind bars than watch Michael Moore describe his investigation of health care in the United States. Just as more people will cast a vote for the next American Idol than will cast a vote for their next congressperson.

I guess I’m just a little disappointed in CNN — I thought Fox News was the pandering network.

His interviews, they say, are edited to let Moore win the arguments. Possibly, but these are the same tactics used by Fox News. Moore makes movies, not legal documents, and they are his perspectives, not “objective journalism”. The debunkers do not generally attack his central themes. He has said his staff vetted every line, every word in Fahrenheit 9/11, and that anyone can disagree with his opinions, but the facts as presented are facts. Nobody has yet won a lawsuit claiming Moore had his facts wrong.

DR J: Hiding behing nothing……..I’ve yet to meet a TP poster who doesn’t give up on arguing the issue because. Michael Moore is a sociopahic liar and that is actually a moderate view. I have plenty of links:
    http://www.moorewatch.com/

    The first of many lies:

Viewers are taken to London’s Hammersmith Hospital, held up as a shining example of socialized care, where doctors are well-paid and patients well looked after. Moore ambles through the corridors interviewing patients that acclaim the NHS’s ‘free care,’ and express horror at the barbarism of the American system. Indeed, the facility’s “cashier” exists to give money to patients—for travel reimbursements—rather than taking it from them. But as is often the case with Moore’s films, the reality is more complex.

In 2005, London’s Evening Standard reported that Hammersmith Hospital would slash hundreds of jobs; the hospital, the most debt-ridden in Britain, was hemorrhaging money and desperately needed to cut costs. And while the hospital was “downsizing”, Hammersmith’s CEO—yes, even the NHS has an executive class—collected a year-end bonus of close to $20,000. Small beer by American standards, but enough to provoke tabloid headlines in Britain.

Much like the American hospitals Moore excoriates, Hammersmith Hospital, the Evening Standard reported, faced pressure from administrators to limit the number of patients treated in order to cut spending. In a country where the government promises to winnow down queues to 18 weeks, this isn’t an anomalous problem. A recent BBC documentary accused the NHS of using dangerously high doses of radiation on patients “to save time and money.”

  104. DRxJ says:

okay eric. You’ve just given me a debunking of a movie that is yet to be released.
Interesting, since I haven’t seen the movie yet.
    I can’t debate what I don’t know.
You clearly can, because your hatred towards Michael blinds you from reality.

    so, I’ll offer it again.

If Michael lies, where are the lawsuits?
I mean, come on… the proof would be right there in the friggin’ movie. If he lied, he would have his arse sued, wouldn’t he?
    …..still waiting

  105. eric says:

Bottom line: Our healthcare system is far from perfect but far exceeds any socialist system out there hands down. All socialist countries suck. I’m well aware of my use of the work “All”. If you want to trade our free enterprise system for a third rate socialized system, then you’ll have to move to those countries.

Now if you come at it with the idea of reform, I have open ears. As soon as you start showing Cuba as the model to go after, I’m not listening.

I see. And Moore said this was NOT the case? In other words, Moore said that Hammersmith Hospital had NOT cut jobs, and the CEO was NOT given a bonus at the same time?

See, those would be examples of “lies” as the term is conventionally recognized — you know, if Moore made statements that were demonstrably false.

And Moore in his film (which you have presumably seen, right?) must have said that the hospital did NOT “face pressure from administrators to limit the number of patients treated”. If he said something like that, then the statement you quoted above WOULD constitute evidence of “a lie”.

Oh, wait, maybe I’m overlooking something… maybe you don’t really know the definition of “a lie”?

  108. eric says:

You’re not making any sense. I don’t know if anyone has sued MM. If the answer is yes or no it is irrelevant. It doesn’t make his obscuring the truth any less valid. You throw around the term lies” pretty freely in conncection with michael Moore. Do you consider it a lie when George Bush said that we’re in iraq because we’re fighting the people who attacked us on 9/11?

That’s not explicitly saying that Saddam was behind the attacks (he wasn’t; even Bush agrees that’s true) but it certainly leaves that impression in the minds of someone who wasn’t paying close attention. That sounds pretty damn close to what you accuse Michael Moore of doing in his films — crafting truth and rhetoric to leave a false impression.

Seems like you should be just as willing to accuse the President of lying, since that appears to be your definition of “a lie”.

  112. Jay Randal says:

CNN is using this as an excuse to not have Michael Moore talk about his documentary “SICKO.” Health Insurance Industry CEOs must have called up CNN to cancel the interview. Paris Hilton is an air-head and not worth the time to watch her say baloney on Larry King show.

No wonder why the main stream media is getting turned off and the internet is being used for people to get real news from.

Hey news channels, if you start ignoring Paris, she isn’t going to be important anymore. Or sorry, I forgot that this is just another one of your distractions so that this government can strip us of our freedoms while you talk to Paris.

Let them know that spending an entire hour interviewing a bimbo seems to be at odds for an organization that calls itself the Most Trusted Name in News. Especially when they haven’t covered ANY of these five ultra-important stories at ALL!

This is your argument? Against Michael Moore? It would be a bit more compelling if you could back that up with a little more data. Yeah, the guy is white, and he probably tips the scales at a bit more than he should (this is fairly evident from looking at any photo of him – although not terribly relevant to his work). However, the descriptive terms “piece of crap” and “stupid” beg for a bit more information — not to mention your handle, which appears to be a condemnation of his latest movie.

Did you see “Sicko” at one of the sneak preview screenings, and you are basing your remarks on that? Or are you rejecting “Sicko” before seeing it? Or maybe you’re accusing him of stupidity as a result of his earlier work? And what did he do to earn the “piece of crap” moniker? You don’t have to like the guy or his movies, but calling him names won’t sway too many to your view.

C’mon — even trolls bring intelligent discourse to the table!

Moore’s next film should be on just how crappy the state of television journalism has become. He could start with Edward R. Murrow in the 50’s and work his way down (way, way down) to present day CNN, MSNBC, Faux, etc.

If Bernie Shaw were still alive, he’d be rolling over in his grave.

  131. missmolly says:

    To Philbert –

Great idea for MMs next project — but I don’t have much faith that the American people would be able to tell the difference (or if they did, they’d prefer the current version). They’re too accustomed to being pandered to, having their information dumbed down for their short attention spans, and being able to select their “news” slanted to the ideology of their choice. Those who still like some intellectual content in their information and welcome having their minds challenged already know that broadcast journalism has gone downhill, so MM would just be preaching to the choir.

  132. Krazny says:

Alot of it is the short attention span theatre. Paris is uncomplicated and a juicy psuedo-scandal. paying attention to politics is hard work

  133. Parrotlover77 says:

Michael Moore is not exactly a TV ratings-grabber, so from a completely capitalistic standpoint, it was a “good” business decision. However, from a sane standpoint where news companies should not just be solely for-profit entities but should provide reports that educate, inform, and inspire — this is an absolute tragedy of epic proportions. Welcome to Media Consolidation. You can thank the Regan generation of republicans for starting this train…

  140. Joe Burd says:

I think everyone here has made some valid points, for both arguments, but let’s consider everything carefully. Who is Paris Hilton really replacing, but none other than another superficial, attention-hound that has risen to fame by telling half-truths, pretending to be a government watchdog, and always falling short of actually getting a strong message across in his films. Mainstream documentaries have in fact been filmed that focus on Mr. Moore’s and his tendencies to sell-out when it comes to his films. On the hand, at least Paris Hilton’s family can be respected around the world, she’s at a cross-roads in her life, and wants to tell her story. Hopefully she never drinks and drives again, but at least she’s been legitimate in her professional endeavors, even as far as being a trend-setter and fashion mogul (after all though, nobody’s perfect). Mr. Moore, frankly, should be ashamed of himself for not being all that he could have really been to a movement (the truth movement and/or 9/11 truth movement) that continues to experience growing support and momentum around the country – if you want to learn the real facts about healthcare or any other major issue in the world, look to the alternative media. My favorite is http://www.prisonplanet.com. Don’t look to a con artist that put his own motives ahead of absolute truth. Botton line, Paris deserves the spot more than this bum. If Larry King wants to focus on the “big issues” he should have guests like Ron Paul (despite being a Republican, he supports the truth movement) or Alex Jones, a real filmmaker and investigative journalist. Moore, thumbs down tonight… Paris Hilton, thumbs up.

  141. Chris says:

What a suprise, American media dropping the big issue for an interview with exactly whats wrong with America, the rich, materialistic, upper class American. It’s no wonder your entire society is plagued with poor health, education, and crime problems. Superpower? If your American and you think your country is the most advanced and wealthiest in the world your kidding yourself. There are third world countries that look after their people better.

The FBI just released documents proving that the bin Ladens had something to do with getting Saudis out of the country after 9-11. How much grief did Moore take for that assertion?

Even harder to believe corporate tools will still rush to their keyboard to defend our system. Facts and figures? Forget it. We’re the best!!!

But the kicker is the guy who would actually rather sit and listen to Paris Hilton. Could our society get any dumber?

Re: Could our society get any dumber?

You have to wonder. The fact that Larry King et al, beat a path to the door of a sociopathic, parasite while leaving real newsmakers, like Moore, in the dust, is as discouraging as it gets.

America seems more and more like Rome, circa 07 AD, than the birthplace of modern democracy.

As an American citizen and a mother of teenage children I make certain that I tell my children about what is going on with these fake news stations and where they can find real news.

I have read for months now that Americans want this stuff which is why the fake news stations put this on for people to view. I think that is a very big lie that needs to be exposed.

I do not want to view the garbage that has been spewed at me 24/7 and called news when it is only opinionated non-factual crap. I do not watch American Idol, Survivor, Dancing With the Stars, or any other mindless drivel so generously pushed at me.

When I look over the TV schedule and I see nothing worth viewing, I turn OFF the TV and pick up a book to read, such as A Tragic Legacy by Glenn Greenwald.

  167. valiant venus says:

Everytime I hear the name Paris Shillton, I change the channel. Saying that….I would sit through a Paris marathon 24/7 so as not to be subjected to the disingenuous fraud, Michael Moo-re. If that dirty, fat oaf (whose greatest act is pretending to be a working shlub) and his friends want to buy health insurance for the down and out, live in a place without Second Amendment protections and unionize every job in socialist nirvana – - go right ahead. I suggest we invade Canada give it to the lunatic Left and let you live among the politically-progressive neighbours to the north.

    Tooodles…….

  168. Concerned citizen says:

I would rather listen to Paris Hilton any day over Michael Moore anti Americanism speeches.

  169. lambchops says:

Oh, and about Michael Moore and his new film? I plan to go see it when it opens here and take my children too. As my name indicates, I am a sheep and intend to raise sheep, who mindlessly swallow propaganda and lies. And who better to swallow lies from than Michael Moore?

  170. Jesse says:

These kind of decisions are made because these 24 hours news networks are CORPORATIONS. They aren’t treated as an important public service news broadcasts used to be. Paris Hilton will draw more viewers, thus more advertising dollars, thus more profit for the corporation. The importance of the discussion and it’s relevance to U.S. citizens is NOT relevant to the decision making by corporations whose goal is purely profit.

  171. Bruce Gorton says:

    Jesse

Would it? Paris Hilton is the most boring person on Earth, elevated to national interest by her wealth.

    Concerned citizen

Funny thing about Moore’s “Anti American” speeches: They tend to be about how to make things better, for Americans.

But then again, you righties seem to think that being pro-soldier means sending soldiers off to get shot at in essentially meaningless wars, and then denying them benefits when they come home – so I am not entirely sure about what you would consider to be PRO American.

  172. valiant venus says:

Hey Alex – Watch BBC?? I do have to give self-flagellating Brits credit for noting the “liberal bias in reporting which the BBC unabashedly displays….No wonder you think they are an objective news source…

  173. JY says:

this is ridiculous!! paris hilton does not concern us at all, whereas the health care system concerns everyone.

  174. Concerned citizen says:

    Jesse:

funny how people talk against an opinion in a blog. haha. get a life.

  175. Jason Baddo says:

Remember the movie “Network” ? This is what American media has come to. Who is as mad as hell & not going to take it anymore ?? Answer = no one in America. Why = too f##cking stupid to rationalise anything anymore!!!

  176. angry rat says:

Even FOX applauded Moore’s movie. (Mein Gott.) But it can’t be more important, than a spoiled brat getting out of jail…

This country is being lobotomized. If people woke up, and looked around, the “ruling class” (gosh, that sounds so Marxist… but how else do you call them?) would be in a great trouble -possibly involving tar and feather. I guess their only option is to ride the tide, and try to keep the population as ignorant as possible.
When I first heard “Bullet in the Head” by RATM, I thought they were exaggerating. I think, they might have underestimated the problem.

  177. Paulo (Portugal) says:

I know i am from another planet (as you guys from the States tend to think of Europe), but i’ll never understand the kind of self-centered and childish patriotism that most americans seem to have for their country. Can’t understand how a country with so many musical, literature, cinema, architecture or science record, over the centuries, managed to get such a progressive, widespreaded and general lobotomy. Please wake up.

  178. Uncle Sam says:

I know i am from another planet (as you guys from the States tend to think of Europe), but i’ll never understand the kind of self-centered and childish patriotism that most americans seem to have for their country.

Yeah, it’s so much more… “progressive”… to put your own country down.

You know, you can find fault with your country and still love it.

  179. Paulo (Portugal) says:

Yeah, it’s so much more… “progressive”… to put your own country down.

You know, you can find fault with your country and still love it.

I’m not putting my country down. I simply don’t have to declare my love to it. I see all countries as a mid-term way of peoples organization and need for identity. Nation-states are social engeneering, less harmful than the marxist vision of the world, though. Let’s say that, altough Portugal contributes for my identity and the well-being of portuguese, as my friends and enemies do, i don’t feel the need to think in my country as a ersatz for some kind of religion-need. Because that’s what i think when i read people who says that Moore is an anti-american, for example: altough i dislike his demagogic way, i think he is no lesser american than the ones who always stand by whatever their governments do, as if everything were a patriotic act.
