Reacting to the Office of the Vice President’s assertion that it is not an “entity within the executive branch,” Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) announced that he will introduce an amendment to cut off funding to Cheney’s office. Emanuel discussed the legislation on MSNBC tonight:
[Cheney] is acting like he’s unaccountable to anybody…and he’s taking an unbelievable step saying he’s not a member of the executive branch, he’s a member of the legislative branch, therefore he doesn’t have to provide information. … So I said, If that’s your logic, then we shouldn’t be funding you through the executive branch. Either Wednesday or Thursday my amendment will be on the floor, because the funding for the executive branch is on the floor. And I’ll strike the money for the Vice President’s Office. He can live off the Senate presidency budget that funds him up here. And that’s fine. But if he’s going to be funded in the executive branch, he complies with the rules that apply to everybody. He is not above the rules of the executive branch.

June 25th, 2007 at 7:43 pmthis isn’t a joke. Dick Cheney has effectively overthrown our government and become a government unto himself. He has set policies, determined laws, caused people to be tortured, outed CIA agents and declared himself above and beyond our laws.

June 25th, 2007 at 7:46 pmAnd this was from a Chaney spokeswoman:
A few media outlest picked up on Rahm Emanuel’s idea of defunding Dick Chaney’s office as part of the executive-branch appropriations. “The vice president needs to make a decision,†Emanuel said. Lea Anne McBride, a Chaney spokesperson, said Emanuel “can either deal with the serious issues facing our country or create more partisian politics.â€

Cheney would love to see his paycheck cut…
He will have a list of lobbyists who are willing to foot the bill for him and give him a nice place to stay; and with Rahm resolution,Cheney will have a nice ‘excuse’…
What they need to do is to enforce the laws in the books..but not to pay Cheney a ‘Government check’ will not solve anything.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:51 pmCan’t Rahm think of anything better than that..?!

June 25th, 2007 at 7:52 pmCan’t wait to see this non-binding legislation. But shouldn’t we table it until September? That is the “new and improved Democrat” M.O., right?

June 25th, 2007 at 8:07 pmNow Congress can definitely go back and revisit all the instances where Cheney claimed “executive privilege” and rescind all of that…haha! Be careful what you ask for, Dickie-Do-Do.

June 25th, 2007 at 8:08 pmWill it work? It might. Congress has the purse, and they’re not passing a law, meaning the President can’t veto it.
And if he can’t veto it, all they need is a majority vote. Meaning the DEMS can do it.
If they don’t it will be because of a democrat, not a republican.

June 25th, 2007 at 8:09 pmOk, let’s see if they really do it. They certainly should not be funding Chaney’s fancy house and all the other perks he gets if he isn’t part of the Executive branch of the government. Congress should also go back and insist that Chaney hands over the list of energy people who visited his house to plan invading Iraq to steal their oil. He got out of that one by claiming Executive privilege. Well, if you aren’t part of the Executive branch Chaney baby, you can’t have Executive Privilege!
Here’s hoping that the Democrats have grown a spine and don’t back down again.

Poor wittle guy. Still looking for that savior so as to deny your own complicity I see.
I’m sure you cheered the 2006 election as being the beginning of the end to the Iraq “war” too. How did that non-binding resolution thing work out?
There is an axiom in business that says: “Do not confuse efforts with results.” Yoda, in SWII, approached the concept from a slightly different angle when he said to Luke: “You either ‘do’ or ‘do not’, there is no ‘try’.”
Your applause of an announced “effort” that will not get results shows that you are ignorant to the concept of getting things done and are easily placated with grandiose promises. Shiny things always capture the attention of the intellectually challenged.
You choose to remain in that grouping willingly. That’s your choice and I respect that. But if you are waiting for applause and adulations for your choosing to be ignorant, well, you’ll be waiting a while.
Talk to me again on Friday when nothing comes of this latest theatrical trick. Until then, enjoy your ignorance.

June 25th, 2007 at 8:46 pm#108,
That silence that you are experiencing in response to your suggestion of a general strike, that is the sound of a vacuum. The vacuum, of course, is all that is left of American honor and courage.
Don’t believe me? Just wait for the responses you receive. No one here is willing to give up a McDonalds hamburger for the lives of subhuman Iraqis.
If you want to experience more silence (and even censorship from this site as well) then make the suggestion that the AUMF be revoked by the new Democratic majority congress. Keeping in mind, of course, that such a tactic will require only a SIMPLE MAJORITY VOTE in congress and could NOT BE VETOED, ie; it would work perfectly.
Progressive indeed.

June 25th, 2007 at 8:46 pmMy favorite Cheney story was from watching Spike Lee’s “When The Levee’s Broke” when the guy walks up behind the Cheney photo op and tells Cheny to “go f*ck yourself” not once, but twice. More surprising than that, to find out the guy was a physician.
June 25th, 2007 at 8:48 pmIt was surprising to me because my husband is a physician and he would never do anything like that, even if he was furious. He (my huband) went to NOLA and volunteered for several weeks. He was very emotional after he got back (and horribly sick with that ‘Katrina cough’. The stories he had to tell made ME cry.
Bush and Cheney showed up to put a face on the disaster and act like they cared, and acted like they actually intended to do something about the recovery. They didn’t care and still do not care.
I am surprised given the level of anger that they felt secure enough to step foot in the disaster zone - with protection or not.
They are a disgrace.

Authorization to use military force — the way the Chimp got us into Iraq.
June 25th, 2007 at 8:55 pmTechnically Bush of course can veto his own spending bill, but he can’t force the money.
If he vetos the bill, the effect is the same. Cheney doesn’t get the funds either way. All that has to happen is for the Dems to stand behind Rahm on this one. And this one is a good one, so I am hoping, no, I’m praying, that they will.
June 25th, 2007 at 8:56 pm#130,
The fact that you don’t know what it is only illustrates my point further.
But here’s a little tidbit for you from Feb 19, 2007:
“It’s time to say that redeployment should start in 90 days, or the Congress will revoke authorization for this war,” Clinton said a video posted on her campaign Web site.
Both the AUMF and the Iraq War Authorization of 2002 can be revoked by a simple majority vote in congress and cannot be vetoed.
But, I guess the intellegentsia here are hell-bent on non-binding resolutions because those work so fcuking well.
Progressive indeed.

You know, maybe you should read some of my posts before just deciding I”m “ignorant”, for choosing to cheer on the only people even trying to stand up to the president.
You talk about getting things done, but do you really know how?
You want an “all or nothing” approach.
Ok. Fine. So do I.
Thats what I “want”.
But reality is we’ve got a lame duck congress who has been effectively “deballed” by the executive branch.
If you get the horse to water it doesn’t make much sense to sit back and demand he drink from a glass.
June 25th, 2007 at 9:08 pm#134,
The general strike would work , of course, and I’m in favor of it as well. In fact, I’ve been in favor of it for over 4 years.
But every time it is suggested it is panned as being too much of an inconvenience. (There’s that lack of honor and courage.)
Now, you are a witty sort and often have great humorous and stinging comments. But forgive me if I don’t “give it a rest”. Hundreds of thousands of people have been murdered, tortured, terrorized, and oppressed by my government and it continues unabated. My nephew is right in the middle of this sh*t and each day I wake up to the possibility that I will receive a call from my family with the news that you all find just merely inconvenient, but to me would be devastating.
I’ll give it a “rest” when this atrocity is ended. I’m sorry if my unrelenting approach offends your comfort, but your convenience is not my top priority.

Just a thought.
June 25th, 2007 at 9:13 pmAnd how do you revoke use of force? With a slim majority and people like Lieberman there?
Unless I am mistaken, this would require votes. Enlighten me if I am wrong.
There is a reason that little is getting done in congress. They can’t get a veto proof majority and virtually everyone is voting down party lines, whether it’s good for the country or bad.

The case for your being labeled “ignorant” is made best by yourself. Your comment:

That statement is not just factually wrong, but it shows that you have no idea how our congress and system of government works.
But, you are holding on to that ignorance pretty tightly so I have to assume that you find that position desirable. Your choice.
June 25th, 2007 at 9:18 pm#149,
Do you know what a “simple” majority is? If you have 100 Senators, then a “simple majority” is 51. The mathematical formula is (.5X + 1) where “X” is the total number.
And since it is an authorization, revoking it cannot be vetoed.
Do you want me to shoot down more excuses?
June 25th, 2007 at 9:21 pm#150,

To revoke the AUMF (Authorization for Use of Military Force) and the Iraq “war” Resolution of 2002 would require only simple majority votes in both houses of congress. Nothing else. No fancy ceremonies. No other processes.
But, einstein, go ahead and call me an “inbred idiot lamebrain”. Though be sure to qualify it correctly by pointing out that I’m the “inbred idiot lamebrain” who is more knowledgeable than you.
June 25th, 2007 at 9:38 pmBush can veto this spending bill if he wants, but that effectively does the same thing as long as the dems remain cohesive on it. As long as the ammendment is supported, Bush won’t get a cent until he signs off on it.
So it is a showdown. Will the dems fold? Possibly. They did on the war funding bill. But rather than sit back and cry about how doomed we are, I prefer to get behind the only people with any power to do anything about this president run amuck, and the only game in town right now, is the congress.

Let me know when you’ve figured it out. Until then, keep chasing your non-binding resolutions because that has produced the EXACT results that it was intended to, it placates the ignorant and ensures that the “war” continues.
Oh, and look up “complicity” and then reconcile that definition with the “results” that your horses have achieved. You’ll find that it is not just appropriate, but it is precisely accurate.

June 25th, 2007 at 9:57 pmPlease keep in mind that the free radical ‘freedomrings’ initially started here as a right-wing troll who was a global warming denier. He has taken a very Ted Kaczinsky-like (sp?) stance and even advocated killing people to reduce carbon emissions. (He sounded serious.) Despite appearing pretty crazy, he did take the standard talking point that a carbon tax would be disastrous.
I think he’s the type of troll who tries to act serious but ends up promoting crazy crap. There are several troll tactics. One of them is to make TP appear to be a bunch of progressive loonies.
All the talk of a general strike is a desire to paint himself a radical. I’m not buying it. Does the phrase ‘agent provacateur’ come to mind. Either he’s a deceptive troll or he’s missing a few marbles. If I had to bet I’d say it’s the latter.
Here’s one of his great posts.
—
If you kill your son and entire family and then blow your brains out the combined decomposition emissions will be less than if you all drive in your hybrid from Detroit to Canada!
