Breaking: Senate votes to proceed on immigration bill.»

In a defeat for the right wing, the AP reports the Senate is moving forward with the immigration bill:

The Senate voted Tuesday to jump-start a stalled immigration measure to legalize millions of unlawful immigrants. […]

The pivotal test-vote was 64-35 to revive the divisive legislation. It still faces formidable obstacles in the Senate, including bitter opposition by GOP conservatives and attempts by some waverers in both parties to revise its key elements.

UPDATE: Also today, crucial Senate legislation that would make organizing a union easier was blocked from even coming to a vote by conservatives.

    They call it overhaul.
I guess when I took a sledge hammer to my car and destroyed it entirely, that was an overhaul.

  2. Chadwick Says:

Americans are being sold out by the two Families, Republican and Democrat.

  3. Crump's Brother Says:

Let’s start by jailing all the employers who are knowingly hiring undocumented workers. It’s already on the books. Just enforce the laws against the employers and the jobs will dry up.

Why is it we never hear this argument in the ‘liberal’ media?

  4. Jay Randal Says:

This is NOT a victory for the left wing either. I am a progressive Democrat who believes our borders must be secured. The US cannot obsorb the entire poor population of Mexico and Central America.

  5. RemoveBush Says:

I want this bill to fail and force the Congress to UPHOLD the laws ALREADY on the books…….

We don’t need any new laws….. We need to enforce the ones we have!

If we FINE and JAIL those managers and companies that hire illegals, then within a year there will be no work for illegals and they will leave by the millions…..

This bill is NOTHING but AMNESTY!!!!!

We already have laws, ENFORCE THEM!

  6. Tom3 Says:

The touchback provision is the dombest thing to come out of Crapitol Hill in a long time.

Must have been written by a a Repuke.

  7. ben Says:

CB - Exactly. Has enforcement under Bush gone up or down? I would venture to guess down.

  8. Man Says:

No no, it is a true overhaul. The overhaul is when your car has been systematically destroyed over the last thirty or so years and your mechanic says it will only take a week to completely restore it.

Additionally, the mechanic wont tell you how much the restoration will cost, what condition the replacement parts are in or that your car will start being systematically destroyed again the moment you drive it out of the garage.

Hey Norm Coleman, kiss your senate seat goodbye. Hello Joe Repiya (USArmy, ret.).

  9. MsJoanne Says:

#2, WOW! Did I read that right that all the journalists let go were Dem supporters?

As if anyone doesn’t have opinions! PULEEZE! It’s passing those opinions along as fact that’s wrong. And a cartoonist? If he’s a political cartoonist, isn’t that the point??

More corporate take over of our minds, er media.

  10. MsJoanne Says:

#8, I venture your guess is correct. After all, it’s the business people who want the cheap labor. It’s for them that they want this bill passed.

  11. Tom3 Says:

Enforcement against employers under Chimpy dropped to 1/4 of what is under Clinton.

  12. RUCerious Says:

The current verification system is a joke.
May I please see your falsified documents?
Thanks you may now take your place in the sweatshop!

  13. Jay Randal Says:

Now when you ask your employer for a raise, and he laughs and says he can replace you with a Latino immigrant, then remember what the Senate did today. They screwed us all over.

  14. Man Says:

The touchback provision is the dombest thing to come out of Crapitol Hill in a long time.
Must have been written by a a Repuke.

This was included in a bill written by crapwad Lindsay Graham-nesty(R). His constituents told him vociferously that this was a bad idea but like all the cloture signers, he didnt give a flying hoot.

He will be out on his butt too. Good riddance.

  15. MsJoanne Says:

All enforcement has gone down under Bush. He created an executive order putting a political appointee in each “protection” agency guaranteeing that each agency becomes ineffective in actually doing any protection.

And the SCOTUS now helps that along.

    Corporations win. We lose.

    Again.

  16. Man Says:

BTW, my senator, the good Norm Coleman(R-MN) who I fully supported last time around is going to get kicked to the curb like a dog. Even Klobuchar(D) was getting an earful to tread lightly on this one; she too must feel untouchable. Clue for ya Amy, you arent.

I hate all you crapheads who voted for this.

  17. What you can do Says:

This is truly a great win for President Bush.

What you can do about this at the link.

  18. Jay Randal Says:

Nobody has ever bothered to ask Democrats, in DC, why they refuse to secure the Mexican border? They must think Mexico is just Cancun resorts, but actually has massive regions of poverty. Perhaps everybody in Congress have Latino maids, cooks, and gardeners? Sen. Ted Kennedy has major ties to Mexico’s elite, but he never tells that to his supporters in Mass.

  19. Think Prostate Says:

This is not good news for Pelosi, her non-union Mexican vineyard workers are going to start demanding more money. She might have to sell a house or two to make up the difference.

Sad day for America. Guess I need to learn to like this type of food, Im just not a big fan of tortillas.

  20. katy Says:

UPDATE: Also today, crucial Senate legislation that would make organizing a union easier was blocked from even coming to a vote by conservatives.

    that need it’s own headline…

and, just how the hell do they keep “blocking” these things ?!?!???
are the dems just too f’n nice, or what?
why didn’t THEY ever do that?
    eh?

  21. CT V_1 Says:

Relax…even if the bill makes it through the Senate, which already has worthy opposition against this trashy bill, it’s sure to die in the House.

The prospects of defeat for this amnesty bill look even better then last year, and we had the November elections to boot.

  22. midwestblue Says:

Lou Dobbs is on CSPAN2 right now, talking to the National Press Club. He’s a sane voice on immigration, no matter what the neoliberals say.

  23. Jay Randal Says:

Post 20 Think > nope Pelosi can fire her Latino workers who demand a pay raise and replace them with new immigrants from Mexico. The wide-open border allows the US elite to pick and choose which ones they want to hire. Plus they can fire them pronto and replace them.

  24. CT V_1 Says:

    Comment by Crump’s Brother

But Crump, your absolutely right. This government could do wonders to shut off illegal immigration by corporate enforcement. The right has certainly been contributing to the problem they complain of.

  25. Think Prostate Says:

Thanks Jay, Im feeling better about that now. I hate to think America’s Grandmother would have to sell anything to keep her Mexiamerican workers in the fields. Union…what union?

  26. Think Prostate Says:

crucial Senate legislation that would make organizing a union easier was blocked from even coming to a vote by conservatives.

Thats because part of this bill included losing anonymity on union votes, which makes intimidation easier. Better to know what the entire bill entails before getting hysterical about it.

    Comment by katy

You offer such insightful posts, katy.

  28. leftcoast Says:

    katy,
I wrote earlier that I believe this bill is nothing more than Bush’s promise to Fox and the need for corporate america to drive down wages.

Secure the borders. Enforce employment regs, and return those caught here illegally. Their countries would do the same to us. Borders make good neighbors. Bush and Company must show America it is a nation of laws then perhaps I will support immigration reform, but never will I give lawbreakers a headstart over the millions waiting patiently to emigrate legally.

  29. Tom3 Says:

    Lou Dobbs LIES about immigration.

He’s no better than the racists.

  30. leftcoast Says:

#23 Lou Dobbs is on CSPAN2 right now, talking to the National Press Club. He’s a sane voice on immigration, no matter what the neoliberals say.

    Comment by midwestblue
Lou Dobbs is not affiliated with any party. He just tries to get at the truth, and has the ties to get to it. I know that my fellow TP’ers here have misgivings about Dobbs, in fact hate him, but there is sanity in his words.

  31. leftcoast Says:

Tom3- support your statement on Dobbs.

  32. Wayne Says:

Personally, I think they should enforce the laws on the books, fine the employers. If US businesses were not breaking the law, the illegals would not get work.
Enforcement against businesseshas dropped to almost nil under Bush.

    This is a crap law.

  33. Jay Randal Says:

I just checked on google and Mexico has a population of over 109 million. It did have a population of about 12 million more, but they came across the border. Expect about 2 million more yearly to come into America. Thank Bush and the Congress for this continueing.

  34. CT V_1 Says:

This bill is a compromise only between the radical elements of both parties - those with voter interests and those with corporate interests.

This bill has no business being passed. While I see it to be slightly better than last year’s proposal, it still shouldn’ t make it to the President’s desk.

  35. CT V_1 Says:

The immigration system is not broken, the enforcement system is broken.

  36. Craig Mack Says:

30 comments until someone cried racist…..that’s progress! Usually it only takes a few until someone screams that any immigration bill is a vile, racist, bigoted attempt to hurt Mexicans.

  37. leftcoast Says:

Mexico has much to gain from the billions sent back into their economy from workers here. Should that stop perhaps a revolution would change their corrupt government.

  38. Jay Randal Says:

Of interest: I recently read an article about entire villages, in Mexico, becoming deserted due to them coming across the border into US. Then the article stated that Mexican elite are bulldozing the vacated villages and building exclusive villas for themselves and rich Americans. I wonder if Ted Kennedy purchased himself a nice villa estate in Mexico?

  39. Roger_Roger Says:

Why is it important to take away the right of an employess to a secret ballot? Just curious what your rationale is on this one. Should we not hold secret ballots when we elect the president and congress?

  40. leftcoast Says:

Re: 30 : Craig, don’t you just cringe at the racist card?

  41. Craig Mack Says:

No, because sometimes it’s warranted. However, if you overuse it, as most illegal support groups do, then you become the proverbial “boy who cried wolf”. Usually the people who cry racism would prefer an open border, at least that’s my opinion.

  42. Nance Says:

Get out the KY, we’re getting screwed again! Anyone watch Ted Kennedy singing in Spanish last night? Lou Dobbs showed it on his program.
the other piece of this, is to stop treating Mexico like a favored son. We need to start pressuring Mexico, to begin providing for their own people. Mexico isn’t a poor country, only their people, the rich Mexicans live quite nicely, in some cases, thanks to us. You need to stop this illegal immigration at the root and that’s in Mexico. Until that happens, there will always be a illegals

  43. leftcoast Says:

#40 Why is it important to take away the right of an employess to a secret ballot? Just curious what your rationale is on this one. Should we not hold secret ballots when we elect the president and congress?

Employees are corporate owned. Employment is a privelege, not a right?
    Sarcasm intended.

  44. leftcoast Says:

Craig- Yeah, your right. But god I always hate myself when I see that I have been racisit in my thinking to resolve my conflict within.

  45. Bruce from Texas Says:

I have a feeling we are being sold out by our own people an our own party, this is very hard to take. Just enforce the laws that’s on the books. If these people want to come to America, do it the right an legal way. Being from Texas, you can not believe how they are taking over this state.

A e-mail I have saved from last year.

Below is a good example of a discussion with a master of
circular logic. Don’t be logical, don’t respect the truth or your adversary,
just say what you think makes a new case when the previous case gets too
difficult to defend. On the streets of downtown Houston ,

    May 1, 2006.

Jim Moore reporting for a Houston TV station:

Jim: Juan, I see that you and thousands of other protesters are marching in
the streets to demonstrate for your cause. Exactly what is your cause and what
do you expect to accomplish by this protest?

Juan: We want our rights. We will show you how powerful we are. We will bring
    Houston to its knees!

    Jim: What rights?

Juan: Our right to live here…legally. Our right to get all the
    benefits you get.

Jim: When did you come to the United State s?

Juan: Six years ago. I crossed over the border at night with seven other
    friends.

    Jim: Why did you come?

Juan: For work. I can earn as much in a month as I could in a year in Mexico .
Besides, I get free health care, our Mexican children can go to school free, if
I lose my job I will get Welfare, and someday I will have the Social Security.
Nothing like that in Mexico !

Jim: Did you feel badly about breaking our immigration laws when you came?

Juan: No! Why should I feel bad? I have a right to be here. I have a right to
amnesty. I paid lots of money for my Social Security and Green Cards.

Jim: How did you acquire those documents?

Juan: From a guy in Dallas . He charged me a lot of money too.

Jim: Did you know that those documents were forged?

Juan: It is of no matter. I have a right to be here and work.

Jim: What is the “right” you speak of?

Juan: The right of all Aliens. It is found in your Constitution. Read it!

Jim: I have read it, but I do not remember it saying anything about rights for
    Aliens.

Juan: It is in that part where it says that all men have Alien rights, like
the right to pursue happiness. I wasn’t happy in Mexico , so I came here.

Jim: I think you are referring to the declaration of Independence and that
document speaks to unalienable rights … Not Alien rights.

    Juan: Whatever.

Jim: Since you are demanding to become an American citizen, why then are you
    carrying a Mexican Flag?

    Juan: Because I am Mexican.

Jim: But you said you want to be given amnesty … To become a US citizen.

Juan: No. This is not what we want. This is our country, a part of Mexico that
you Gringos stole from us. We want it returned to its rightful owner.

Jim: Juan, you are standing in Texas . After winning the war with Mexico ,
Texas became a Republic, and later Texans voted to join the USA . It was not
    stolen from Mexico .
Juan: That is a Gringo lie. Texas was stolen. So was California , New Mexico
and Arizona . It is just like all the other stuff you Gringos steal, like oil
and babies. You are a country of thieves.

Jim: Babies? You think we steal babies?

Juan: Sure. Like from Korea and Vietnam and China . I see them all over the
place. You let all these foreigners in, but try to keep us Mexicans out. How is
    this fair?

Jim: So, you really don’t want to become an American citizen then.

Juan: I just want my rights! Everyone has a right to live, work, and speak
their native language wherever and whenever they please. That’s another thing we
demand. All signs and official documents should be in Spanish. Teachers must
teach in Spanish. Soon, more people here in Houston will speak Spanish than
    English. It is our right!

Jim: If I were to cross over the border into Mexico without proper
documentation, what rights would I have there?

Juan: None. You would probably go to jail, but that’s different.

Jim: How is it different? Y ou said everyone has the right to live
    wherever they please.

Juan: You Gringos are a bunch of land grabbing thieves. Now you want Mexico
too? Mexico has its rights. You Gringos have no rights in Mexico . Why would you
want to go there anyway? There is no free medical service, schools, or welfare
there for foreigners such as you. You cannot even own land in my country. Stay
in the country of your birth.

Jim: I can see that there is no way that we can agree on this issue.

    Thank you for your comments.

    Juan: Viva Mexico !
I say , “Viva THIS, juan, — OVER MY DEAD BODY !!”

As a progressive liberal i too hope this bill fails. There are no enforcement of border and consequence for non-complaince. This truly is a national security issue.

Dems do not want it passed because it is to the benefit of Corporate America and bad for security.

GOP do not want it passed because they are xenophobic bigoted Rape-Public-Cans still ding on the fear curd of their failed idealogy.

How do you like your Boy King now?

I like Jack and Keith- There is a voice of reason there. I know the consternation that Lou gives many. But some would apply a broad brush of Lou as racist. That just does not seem the case. When he lets La Raza (The Race) have their say, he give them time. And so many others. He just tries to get them to see the otherside of things.

  51. Jay Randal Says:

Democrats in the Senate do not seem to understand that anything Bush wants should be defeated. He wants this bill passed, so it must be filled with hidden crap to help Bush.

  52. leftcoast Says:

Jay- you’ve got to be right. Supposedly this bill is full of stuff. Two years military service if from another country grants you citizenship. Now if that ain’t the height of slavery?

  53. MsJoanne Says:

Wow, Bruce. That immigrant sure speaks pretty good English for someone who just rolled in across the border a few years prior.

Do you REALLY buy that? What an absolute joke.

Critical thinking, friend. Try it sometime.

  54. Jay Randal Says:

Yes leftcoast > Bush Regime wants the Latinos to become cannon fodder to continue his war in Iraq and soon in Iran too. Nobody in DC reads history, because otherwise they would remember Roman military collapsed when it allowed barbarians to join it.

  55. leftcoast Says:

    And it’s a giant distraction.

We don’t need NEW laws, just enforce the laws we have on the books already.

The real issues are IRAQ and IMPEACHMENT.

MsJoanne, thanks for the reply, but I see it every day. I know some may say its a joke, an that’s fine, but its the truth. These people in what schooling they have are told, this country belongs to them. We stole it from than.I personnel know of a young man that’s working here that has a family in Mexico and they are up in the age, and they are getting a SS check each month from Good OLE USA, and they have never been in America. This person told me this face to face. Thanks

  61. Jay Randal Says:

leftcoast > I was born and raised in California. One of the reasons I left was the increase in Latino gang activity. Parts of Southern California are more scary than Tijuana, Mexico. My sister moved away from Las Vegas, Nevada, for the same reason > massive increase in Latino gang crimes. Having gang members in the military is bad idea, because when they get out they have learned how to be more violent. I did write a FAX letter to members of Congress asking them to at least deport gang members back to Mexico.

  62. Proud American Liberal Says:

And not a word on ThinkProgress about the defeat in the Senate of the Employee Free Choice Act. Democrats failed to get the 60 votes needed to bring it up for a vote. Republicans are ecstatic. The persecution of American workers continues unabated.

  63. timeisart Says:

This so called immigration bill controversy is going to reveal yet again that Bush cannot be trusted to keep any promises he has made to kickstart the debate. Yeah, he says he has authorized $4.5 billion to increase border security, but I would bet he hasn’t really. Watch. Everyone on both sides of the aisle are going to feel betrayed by this piece of bad legislation and it probably will go down in flames…again. I mean, anything Bush thinks is good, in the nation’s 6-year experience with his lying ways, has to be not so good. He does not understand what he is trying to do, as usual. Why should he have a legacy he doesn’t really understand but that he can gloat about?

  64. Jay Randal Says:

Proud > both parties in DC want Labor Unions castrated. Reps and Dems are owned by corporate elite.

  65. leftcoast Says:

Jay, I understand. Fortunately, even though I live in San Diego (and gangs are a problem) we are less impacted than L.A. Gangs are moving all over the country (even to the farmbelt). Meth, crack, and poverty know no boundaries. Repubs have had their chance of working this problem out. Its time for a leadership change and a new American belief in solving problems together rather than by “my way is best” “my religion is best”. Even as a christian I understand this.

  66. Jay Randal Says:

leftcoast > I used to go to the zoo in San Diego at least once a year as a kid. I was born in Pomona, and grew up in Claremont, which are just inland from Los Angeles. That entire area is a massive Latino barrio now. I have no problem with hard working Mexican immigrants, but I see no reason to tolerate the Latino gangs, nor the drug runners.

  67. leftcoast Says:

Jay- I’m a Zoo member. Go all the time. Use to live within walking distance, but now live in Clairemont, above Pacific Beach. Same name as your Claremont. Ironic.
Immigrants, no problem with me either. Illegal immigrants and gangs…this has to stop. This bill will not solve this.

    My pardon, couldn’t resist!

  69. Jay Randal Says:

leftcoast > this bill is just to exonerate large corporations from any financial culpability in hiring illegals. Notice that the fines are to be paid by the illegals themselves and not their employers. I am furious at Ted Kennedy for backing this bogus bill to help Pres. Bush.

  70. Katie Says:

“Also today, crucial Senate legislation that would make organizing a union easier was blocked from even coming to a vote by conservatives.”

This is why Congress has such low poll numbers, not because it is controlled by the Democrats. I read today that the Democrats have passed 236 pieces of legislation, most of which are being held up by the “up or down vote” Republics.

When the Democrats have a veto-proof and filibuster-proof majority after 2008, I hope that they tell the Republics to stick it in their ear.

  71. Katie Says:

I support allowing undocumented workers to become citizens but I strenuously object to this bill. Why? Because it is a corporate give-away plain and simple. It creates a so-called “guest worker” program (read indentured servants) and it makes it much easier for corporations to bring someone in from India to do you job. First we send our jobs to India and now we want to bring people from India into this country to do your job for half the going wage for the job.

Hopefully the neoCON right wing nut jobs will kill this bill because it is a bad one. I don’t agree with their reason for wanting it killed, but since most of our legislatures have lost their heads to the corporations, I’ll take anything I can get to kill this bill.

  72. MsJoanne Says:

Katie, I hope they tell them to shove it up their a$$es. Sticking it in their ear is far too good for them!!

  73. eric Says:

I too find it interesting that TP covers this as a Right Wing defeat. I though conservatives were accused of exploiting the working class by going for cheap labor illegally? Illegal Immigration knows no class, race or political spectrum. You are either for law and order or your not. Don’t try to make middle ground out of illegal activity.

  74. m12 Says:

And who is pushing immigration reform through Congress? The Democrats!

This immigration bill is anti-worker, and a handout to the corporate interests. It’s a disaster.

I’m really sick of the pro-illegal immigration crowd slamming anyone against this bill as racist.

IT A TACTIC TO GET CHEAP LABOR AND KILL OF THE MIDDLE CLASS.

  77. teak Says:

leftcoast: all the proof you need on Dobbs is that he’s exposing how this government is destroying the middle class in America. That is exactly what’s happening, so how is he just a racist? He criticizes whoever is hurting our country and the American people. He doesn’t have anything to gain by that, it’s not what the cable stations want.

I don’t like to hear him criticize the Democrats, but now that this issue has come to the front and now that they’ve had months to do SOMETHING and they haven’t, I’m paying more attention to commentators who say all the pols in D. C. are just alike.

(I still think Ralph Nader is the anti-christ).

  78. teak Says:

I read that somehow this bill also makes the U. S. government responsible for Mexico’s debt and fixing Mexico’s economy.

  79. djc Says:

    “… a defeat for the right wing …” ????

What are you talking about? This amnesty and ‘guest worker’ legislation is a keystone for a union-busting scheme that Bush and the national Chamber of Commerce are greedily wanting.

This bill would be a huge blessing for the oligarchs running Mexico and the mega-transnational corporations that want even lower wages in the U.S.

In truth, the revival of this labor subsidy legislation for the corporations is ‘a defeat for working and middle class Americans’.

Come on, Think Progress, on this issue you need to get on the same side as the AFL-CIO and working Americans.

  80. Spudge_Boy Says:

Breaking: Senate votes to proceed on immigration bill. In a defeat for the right wing, the AP reports the Senate is moving forward with the immigration bill:

The Senate voted Tuesday to jump-start a stalled immigration measure to legalize millions of unlawful immigrants. […]

Sorry, this is a defeat for all Americans. Especially those that live in states that are actually affected by illegal immigration, such as my home state of California, specifically Southern California.

    Wow, what anger…whew.

There has probably never in recent history been an issue over which there is such unanimity between left and right. True, the right villify the immigrants and the left focuses on the employers doing the hiring, but both agree this bill is nonsense. And at such a time, it is truly stunning to see the government that is supposed to be working for us pat itself on the back for such bipartisan cooperation in accomplishing precisely the opposite of what a united electorate demands.

We need to get serious. We need a nationwide strike of America’s middle class so that these sonsofbitches start paying attention. We must demand legislation to stop exporting of jobs and importing cheap labor, both unskilled and skilled. We must demand that the politicians work for the benefit of the American people, not their corporate masters.

Thanks for those statements…I’ve been saying this for some time.

Anyone care to respond? And what is the ‘right wing’ exactly?

Between the President or the GOP members of Congress, one of them has to be right!
