There has probably never in recent history been an issue over which there is such unanimity between left and right. True, the right villify the immigrants and the left focuses on the employers doing the hiring, but both agree this bill is nonsense. And at such a time, it is truly stunning to see the government that is supposed to be working for us pat itself on the back for such bipartisan cooperation in accomplishing precisely the opposite of what a united electorate demands.

We need to get serious. We need a nationwide strike of America’s middle class so that these sonsofbitches start paying attention. We must demand legislation to stop exporting of jobs and importing cheap labor, both unskilled and skilled. We must demand that the politicians work for the benefit of the American people, not their corporate masters.

Breaking: Senate votes to proceed on immigration bill. In a defeat for the right wing, the AP reports the Senate is moving forward with the immigration bill:

The Senate voted Tuesday to jump-start a stalled immigration measure to legalize millions of unlawful immigrants. [â€¦]

Sorry, this is a defeat for all Americans. Especially those that live in states that are actually affected by illegal immigration, such as my home state of California, specifically Southern California.

What are you talking about? This amnesty and ‘guest worker’ legislation is a keystone for a union-busting scheme that Bush and the national Chamber of Commerce are greedily wanting.

This bill would be a huge blessing for the oligarchs running Mexico and the mega-transnational corporations that want even lower wages in the U.S.

In truth, the revival of this labor subsidy legislation for the corporations is ‘a defeat for working and middle class Americans’.

Come on, Think Progress, on this issue you need to get on the same side as the AFL-CIO and working Americans.

leftcoast: all the proof you need on Dobbs is that he’s exposing how this government is destroying the middle class in America. That is exactly what’s happening, so how is he just a racist? He criticizes whoever is hurting our country and the American people. He doesn’t have anything to gain by that, it’s not what the cable stations want.

I don’t like to hear him criticize the Democrats, but now that this issue has come to the front and now that they’ve had months to do SOMETHING and they haven’t, I’m paying more attention to commentators who say all the pols in D. C. are just alike.

(I still think Ralph Nader is the anti-christ).

I’m really sick of the pro-illegal immigration crowd slamming anyone against this bill as racist.

I too find it interesting that TP covers this as a Right Wing defeat. I though conservatives were accused of exploiting the working class by going for cheap labor illegally? Illegal Immigration knows no class, race or political spectrum. You are either for law and order or your not. Don’t try to make middle ground out of illegal activity.

I support allowing undocumented workers to become citizens but I strenuously object to this bill. Why? Because it is a corporate give-away plain and simple. It creates a so-called “guest worker” program (read indentured servants) and it makes it much easier for corporations to bring someone in from India to do you job. First we send our jobs to India and now we want to bring people from India into this country to do your job for half the going wage for the job.

Hopefully the neoCON right wing nut jobs will kill this bill because it is a bad one. I don’t agree with their reason for wanting it killed, but since most of our legislatures have lost their heads to the corporations, I’ll take anything I can get to kill this bill.

This is why Congress has such low poll numbers, not because it is controlled by the Democrats. I read today that the Democrats have passed 236 pieces of legislation, most of which are being held up by the “up or down vote” Republics.

When the Democrats have a veto-proof and filibuster-proof majority after 2008, I hope that they tell the Republics to stick it in their ear.

Immigrants, no problem with me either. Illegal immigrants and gangs…this has to stop. This bill will not solve this.

That entire area is a massive Latino barrio now. I have no problem with hard working Mexican immigrants, but I see no reason to tolerate the Latino gangs, nor the drug runners.

Jay, I understand. Fortunately, even though I live in San Diego (and gangs are a problem) we are less impacted than L.A. Gangs are moving all over the country (even to the farmbelt). Meth, crack, and poverty know no boundaries. Repubs have had their chance of working this problem out. Its time for a leadership change and a new American belief in solving problems together rather than by “my way is best” “my religion is best”. Even as a christian I understand this.
