Several senators have called for the Justice Department to investigate allegations that Karl Rove protege and former U.S. Attorney Tim Griffin used a voter suppression tactic known as “caging” while Griffin was at the Republican National Committee. TPMMuckraker assessed the evidence and found the “caging” efforts disproportionately targeted African-Americans. Says one former Justice official: “It is difficult to explain other than an effort to target Democrats and by extension, minority voters.”
Not “suggests,” “screams.”
June 26th, 2007 at 2:53 pmYes, but what are DC Democrats going to do about it?
June 26th, 2007 at 2:53 pmHere’s the rub.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:59 pmsenators (legislative branch with oversight)
calling on Justice dept (exemptutive branch with no regard for justice)
to investigate wrongdoing by former members of exemptutive branch.
Can you find the things that are wrong in this picture?
What’s so difficult to explain? Caging, when used as a method of voter suppression, is a way to disenfranchise voters. Here’s how it works — send a mass mailing by REGISTERED mail to a group of people (people who are likely to vote against your candidate). Then collect all mail returned because the recipient refused to sign or the mail was otherwise undeliverable for whatever reason. Then proceed to remove these people from the voter rolls. Caught in the net will be some people who have moved, are dead, or should be legitimately removed from the voter list anyway, but also caught in the net will be a bunch of perfectly eligible voters.
I agree that “suggests” is way too weak a word. Anybody with the intelligence of pastry can see what this scheme is all about.
June 26th, 2007 at 3:06 pmDuh.
June 26th, 2007 at 3:19 pmWhy is it easier and more fair voting for an AMerican Idol than for out countries leadership? (Don’t worry, I do know the answer, I’m just venting). I really wish human nature wasn’t so hostile when presented wit the prospect of power and wealth. It would be really great if the fortuante few found out they could still be quite comfortably rich even if they quit pillaging the poor. And I can also dream that Bush and Cheney will actually one day be held accountable for the atrocities they’ve generated… But instead I’m just gong to go have a drink and watch the world go by on this lovely Tuesday afternoon.
June 26th, 2007 at 3:20 pmOf course, the average black conservative would say that it’s blacks’ fault for not voting Republican en masse. We forced those patriotic Republicans to act so unethically! We should be ashamed of ourselves!
June 26th, 2007 at 3:34 pmKeep it up, Muckraker. You’ll only be able to milk this fabrication a few more times.
June 26th, 2007 at 3:40 pmPlaying the race card…nice.
June 26th, 2007 at 4:49 pmWho cares their just african american military personel. SUPPORT THE TROOPS, DON’T CUT AND RUN, FINISH THE MISSION. And their are actually african americans who vote for republicans….
June 26th, 2007 at 4:54 pmWe are a great example of other countries to follow. We see everyday brave Black/Hispanic soldiers giving their lives for all Americans only to be told they have not Rights in America.
Jay is right as he and others could care less about the lost of life of these soldiers just don’t ask Bush loyalist to join the military. The Supreme Court appointees Alito and Roberts will make sure the South will Raise again. Clear out the immigrates so the minorities can get back to working the fields. Woman’s Rights must go and put them back in the kitchen. Assigning minorities to a Master to do the house work and duties for the Lady of the house. Poor whites will take their place as a step above the minorities.
