Elizabeth Edwards Confronts Coulter During Live Television Appearance»

Elizabeth Edwards confronted right-wing pundit Ann Coulter during a live interview on MSNBC this afternoon, charging that Coulter’s “personal attacks” on former senator John Edwards and others were based on “the language of hate.”

Yesterday on ABC’s Good Morning America, Coulter said, “[I]f I’m gonna say anything about John Edwards in the future, I’ll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot.” She has previously called Edwards a “faggot.” In 2003, she wrote a column claiming that John Edwards drove around with a bumper sticker saying “Ask me about my son’s death in a horrific car accident.”

During an hour-long interview with Coulter today on MSNBC, host Chris Matthews announced that Elizabeth Edwards was on the line. Edwards referenced the attacks above, saying, “I’m the mother of that boy who died. These young people behind you…you’re asking them to participate in a dialogue that is based on hatefulness and ugliness instead of on the issues, and I don’t think that’s serving them or this country very well.” The live audience cheered. Watch it:

Responding to Edwards, Coulter first inexplicably claimed that she “didn’t say anything about [Edwards]” on the previous day. Then Coulter tried to claim that Edwards just wanted her to “stop speaking” and stop writing books, but Matthews rebutted her, saying, “No, she said you should stop being so negative to people individually.”

When her first two attempts to spin the situation faulted, Coulter then launched into another baseless, personal attack, accusing John Edwards of “bankrupting doctors by giving a shyster Las Vegas routine in front of juries…doing these psychic routines in front of illiterate juries to bankrupt doctors who now can’t deliver babies.”

Digg It!

Transcript:

MATTHEWS: You know who’s on the line? Someone to respond to what you said about Edwards yesterday morning. Elizabeth Edwards. She wanted to call in today, we said she could. Elizabeth Edwards, go on the line. You’re on the line with Ann Coulter.

E: Hello Chris.

M: Do you want to say something directly to the person who’s with me?

E: I’m calling — you know, in the south, when someone does something that displeases us, we want to ask them politely to stop doing it. I would like to ask Ann Coulter to — if she wants to debate on issues, on positions — we certainly disagree with nearly everything she said on your show today — but it is quite another matter for these personal attacks. The things that she has said over the years, not just about John but about other candidates, lowers our political dialogue precisely at the time that we need to raise it. So I want to use the opportunity, which I don’t get much because Ann and I don’t hang out with the same people…

C: I don’t have enough money.

E: …to ask her politely stop the personal attacks.

C: Okay, so I made a joke, let’s see, six months ago, and as you point out, they have been raising money off of it for six months since then.

M: But this is yesterday morning, what you said about him.

C: I didn’t say anything about him, actually, either time.

E: But that — Ann, Ann, you know that’s not true, and once more, this has been going on for some time.

C: And I don’t mind you trying to raise money. It’s better this than giving $50,000 speeches to the poor just to use my name on the webpages. But as for a debate with me, yeah, sure. Yeah, we’ll have a debate.

E: I’m asking you politely to stop, to stop personal attacks –

C: How about you stop raising money on your web page then? No, you don’t have to because I don’t mind.

E: I did not start with that. You had a column a number of years ago where you suggested — wait till I finish talking please…

C: Okay, the wife of a presidential candidate is calling in asking me to stop speaking.

M: Let her finish the point. Let her finish the point.

C: You’re asking me to stop speaking? “Stop writing your columns. Stop writing your books.”

M: Ann, please.

E: You had a column several years ago which made fun of the moment of Charlie Dean’s death and suggested that my husband had a bumper sticker on the back of his car saying, “Ask me about my dead son.” This is not legitimate political dialogue.

C: This is now three years ago.

E: It debases political dialogue. It drives people away from the process. We can’t have a debate about the issues.

C: Yeah, why isn’t John Edwards making this call?

M: Well, do you want to respond? We’ll end the conversation.

E: I haven’t talked to John about this call. I’m making the call as a mother. I’m the mother of that boy who died. My children participate — these young people behind you are the age of my children. You’re asking them to participate in a dialogue that is based on hatefulness and ugliness instead of on the issues, and I don’t think that’s serving them or this country very well.

[Applause]

M: Thank you very much Elizabeth. You wanna respond? You have all the time in the world to respond.

C: I think we heard all we need to hear. The wife of a presidential candidate is asking me to stop speaking. No.

M: No, she asked you to stop being so negative to people individually.

C: Right, as opposed to bankrupting doctors by giving a schyster Las Vegas routine in front of juries based on science — wait, you said I’d have as long as I would have, then you instantly interrupt me.

M: Go ahead, go ahead.

C: As I was saying, doing these psychic routines in front of illiterate juries to bankrupt doctors who now can’t deliver babies, and to charge a poverty group $50,000 for a speech. Don’t talk to me about how to use language.

M: Elizabeth?

E: …the language of hate, and I’m going to ask you again to politely stop using personal attacks as part of your dialogue.

C: Okay, I’ll stop writing books.

E: If you can’t write them without them, that is fine.

M: Why do you call out Hillary’s chubby legs in your book? Why do you — this may fall under the category of personal attacks, I don’t know, but why do you do that? Why do you talkabout Monica Lewinsky’s chubbiness? If she were skinny, would it have been okay?

C: Um, I don’t know, read the sentence.

E: I read the whole sentence. I couldn’t feel the context.

C: Well you have to give it to me and I could explain.

E: Why do you make fun of Hillary’s chubby legs?

C: I don’t know, you’re going to have to give me the sentence.

M: It’s in the afterword of your book, I just read it this morning.

C: Then read the sentence.

M: We’ll be back and read the entire sentence. We’ll come right back. I don’t know why we’re reading — the full intellectual context will be coming in just a moment.

    Daily John Edwards Fabulous Fact

If you play the song “I Feel Pretty” backwards and listen carefully, you can hear the sound of John Edwards preening.

  6. CompuTrol3000 Says:

Oh yeah. Nothing like a catfight followed up by hot, lesbian sex to make it all up after the fight…

  7. zora Says:

This was totally dreadful! As much as Anne says hateful things for publicity, she showed tonight the true depth of her hatefulness. I hope tonight’s performance convinces Chris never to give her a platform ever again.

You should have heard her talk about ramping up the killing of civilians in order to win the WOT.

  8. Dave C Says:

Chris, instead of asking Coulter why she says those things, ask yourself why you are interviewing her. Give your head a shake man.

  9. valiant venus Says:

I like Elizabeth Edwards and am sorry about her illness and loss. Unfortunately, she still has John……

  10. TheToonGuy Says:

Like their idol, Trolls never engage their brains before opening their pieholes.

  11. unbelievable Says:

    Good for Elizabeth Edwards!

About time Democrats stand up to bullies like Ann Coulter and her gang of hateful followers.

  12. Chris (My Two Sense) Says:

Ann Coulter was her typical disgusting self. Shes a horrible woman.

  13. Robert Says:

And per usual, Tweety is utterly useless during this.

  14. Mark @ News Corpse Says:

I wish Elizabeth had confronted Ann directly on the wish that John Edwards be assassinated by a terrorist (video from Good Morning America). But the question about her son was GREAT! Too bad Ann didn’t respond to any of it, except the false claim that she was asked not to write books.

  15. Not Canadian Says:

    Trolls shit where they eat.

It’s one hole in the same.

  16. Crump's Brother Says:

Notice how Coulter changed the topic. Classic right wing tactic!!

Edwards makes a honest request to Coulter to stop with personally attacking people, and Coulter turns it into a free speech issue.

I’m so glad the MSM keeps putting this woman on the air. It will make 2008 that much easier.

Hey righties, you need to get a grip on your media outlets and your elected leaders and tell them to distance themselves from her. She will do everything she can to bring you guys down. She wont realize it of course, because she thinks all Amercians agree with personal attacks. She will never learn, because like all of you, she gets her news from blowhards like Rush and Hannity on right wing radio which is only useful for personal attacks.

  17. unbelievable Says:

    Unfortunately, she still has John……
    Comment by valiant venus — June 26, 2007 @ 6:14 pm

You don’t even qualify as a human being anymore. You’re disgusting.

  18. Zappatero Says:

yeah, Chris is just the referee of both their virtuous sets of ideas - Ann Coulter who wants all her critics dead, and Elizabeth Edwards.

Don’t let him get away with it.

  19. Joey Says:

    Poor TrAnn was totally flustered.

  20. Not Canadian Says:

The INSTANT she hears is Mrs. Edwards on the line, she starts squirming, and fussing with her mane (she does have a horse face) like a guilty little child who fears a scolding coming their way…

    P R I C E L E S S.

  21. valiant venus Says:

Smart ratings move on Chris’ part - This catfight gives new meaning to the old song “I am WOMAYN hear me roar“…..

  22. CompuTrol3000 Says:

Joey: you are so going to pay for that remark. There are people on TP who hate “tranny Ann” jokes more than anything. You’re really going to get it now from your fellow progressives.

  23. ChallengePTB Says:

I think it’s time we start actively boycotting anyone who gives Coulter airtime or print space. These media whores love her, because Coulter is good for ratings. Time to ask their sponsors why Imus had to go off the air, but Coulter’s share of air time increases with each and every hate-filled filthy comment that spews from her mouth.

Time to put those who give her a public podium on notice, that this isn’t journalism, it is hate-speech that works against the public interests. What’s next, social commentary from neo-nazis and the KKK? Time to ask the sponsors of the shows that give Coulter air-time if this is what they want us to associate their products and services with, as well as the advertisers of the print publications.

    Comment by Frank J — June 26, 2007 @ 6:12 pm

Really? If you play Hail to the Chief backwards, you can hear Bush and Cheney plotting to take over America. The Star Spangled Banner, played backwards, yields: “Frank is a troll, a traitor, and dickhead.”

    Very interesting stuff, music.

  25. katy Says:

  27. veritas Says:

Coultergeist needs the hair to cover her deteriorated face - clearly, the hate she spews is taking over her entire being and she’s becoming rather pathetically ugly at this point. I guess her eyes have such wrinkles and suitcases under them that the shades are a necessary accessory.

Kudos to Elizabeth Edwards for calling this disgusting woman a hate monger. The country is behind Elizabeth Edwards and she “roared over this hate fake today! Horrah! Hoorah!

Squirm like the worm whom she is….what a sleezebucket!

Bravo for Ms. Edwards for speaking the truth. Ann Coulter is a dispicable person.

  29. Zooey Says:

    Fantastic. I love Elizabeth Edwards.

I also love that the audience cheered her. I could stand to see more of that.

  30. RickyScorpio Says:

Coulter needs to be barred from all media. Everyone should blacklist her. Of course, Hannity on Fox has a crush on her so she will always be welcome there…

  34. unbelievable Says:

    Is Ann getting fat?

  35. veritas Says:

Ann now resembles a pair of fake boobs on toothpicks, doesn’t she? Squirming Countergeist is the most priceless of all telltale body signals, isn’t it? She was ready to soil in her pants when she realized that someone which a hundred times more chutzpah and real intelligence was challenging her. What a bold, brave move for Elizabeth! Every woman on the planet is cheering inside for her moxie.

  36. Tom Says:

You know, Paris Hilton and Ann Coulter have alot in common.

They should both be in jail.

    They’re both skanky, blond airheads.

Neither one of them has any redeeming quality.

The only difference is that Paris is benignly self-absorbed; Coulter is psychopathically obnoxious.

Yet, there are so many personal attacks on Ann just in this comment list I can’t count them all.

Anyone else see a disconnect here?

If we want Ann (and other right-wing folks) to stop with the attacks, why can’t we do the same?

  55. JimB. Says:

It’s rather sad that so many of the responses to Elizabeth’s polite request that Ms. Coulter keep a civil tongue in her head were nothing but negative personal attacks on one of them, Sen. Edwards or Chris Matthews. I wasn’t raised to be a polite Southern lady, but I still wish a lot more of us could keep a civil tongue in our heads, whether we are Progressives, neo-cons or whatever. I agree that Ms. Coulter’s behavior ranges from bad to really dreadful, but Elizabeth Edwards does a far better job of demonstrating that than the nastiness here.

Mr. Coulter displays an air of superiority that points toward sociopathy.

I have a friend who’s lived through pancreatic cancer for 14 years. Maybe they can manage her cancer that long. :)
    Comment by Zooey

Living for 14 years with pancreatic cancer is very, very rare. It is one of the cancers with the highest mortality rates, and most people go quite quickly after it is discovered. To wit, one of my friends was found to have it in June one year and died in September. One of my sisters-in-law lasted about 14 months after first being diagnosed. Even Emperor Hirohito of Japan, who surely must have had the best medical care available, lasted only about 4-5 months with it. Your friend is extremely lucky and must have the tumor in a more manageable area.
But some types of cancer are more manageable. I hope that’s the case with Elizabeth Edwards, a woman with more class in her baby toe than Ann Coulter has in her entire ugly self.

  117. BlueArkansas Says:

Harpy Coulter personifies the classic liberal dilemma in responding to the shrill, ad hominem attacks of the right punditocracy. They prey upon our fundamental respect for others and our tolerance of disagreement. It’s tempting to slide into the juvenile name-calling and tit-for-tat exchanges that they crave, but we can’t; they’ll turn that on us, too, arguing that equally shrill responses belie our claims to an intellectual high ground.

In other words, never wrestle with a pig. You both get covered in shit, and the pig likes it.

    The struggle continues…

If she were not to include those attributes in her books, she would have nothing to write about hence her equation of Mrs. Edwards request for her to stop including hate in her speech with not writing books at all. She knows that that is all she has. Nothing of substance, only hate and vitrol. It’s amazing that she still gets interviews on national tv. Imagine if a Michael Moore or an equivalent pundit from the left were to speak with such hatred. Would they be invited back numerous times simply because they have a new book out? I agree Coulter is incredibly hateful, which totally negates the instances in which her arguments are sound. However, these characterizations of the interview are not true. Coulter was squirming and fussing with her hair from the beginning of the interview. There were a couple of times when she avoided answering questions directly, but she never appeared uncomfortable. Edwards opened himself up to comments about his son, though not what she said, by constantly bringing up his death in situations in which it had no bearing.

No, it would not in the case of my post. You took my comment out of context, and you missed my point I fear, or you would not have answered thus. My point was not about free speech or whether Matthews has the right to choose. Or that I am ranting about the horror of having Coulter on TV. Or whether the solution to my “problem” is to change the channel. I was responding to another post that ranted that.

Rather, it was the juxtaposing of the times we live in. Normal times=change the channel, while shaking one’s head at the ratings addicted mentality that invites such tripe on the air, which is what aware people will do. Today, in this atmosphere of up=down, we need people to see the crap for what it is. They will watch and get an education. Then they too will change the channel. We have a lot of educating to do.

Read my post again and tell me how I could have communicated my thought better.

Funny how popular it is for folks to throw accusations at straw men these days. I always thought that was an intellectual faux pas. Here’s a test. If you are about to say something that begins as “You pansy liberals…” or “You idiot conservatives…” take the time to realize that just because someone has an idea that has been designated by the media as left or right wing it doesn’t mean they agree with all ideas of that particular political designation. Put short, it’s just immature and useless generalization. Unfortunately it does sell books.

Start attacking ideas on an individual basis and leave the misdirection to the experts in the media. Otherwise please just go back to shouting at your TV. You won’t persuade anyone by attacking them. In fact you’ll just strengthen their convictions.

Ann Coulter says something and she is absolutely castigated. Yes she does say some outrageous things, but that is all you left wing cry babies can complain about. You never take her to task on her political and philosophical points because you can’t because if you did, you would lose. And another thing, how come when one of your left wing clowns says something on the same low brow level as some of the things Miss Coulter says, you are all mysteriously silent. Your hypocrisy and lack of intellectual honesty disgust me.

Did you ever hear a Liberal and/or Progressive and/or Democrat publically call for the execution of their political opponents? Did you ever hear a Liberal and/or Progressive and/or Democrat publically accuse their opponent of using their dead son as a political tool? Did you ever hear a Liberal and/or Progressive and/or Democrat publically call acccuse their opponent of using their wife’s terminal cancer to get votes? As Mathews asked - why are Hillary’s legs important?

You dare call these comments “political and philosophical points”?

You need to think before you post (talk about intellectual dishonesty - your post is the epitome of intellectual dishonesty). If you can’t, you should STFU.

Interesting that when Edwards asked Coulter to stop the personal attacks, Coulter responded with-you want me to stop writing books, stop writing my column…in other words, Coulter admitted she doesn’t have any substance, only the insults and smears…

    Comment by nullEmerald — June 26, 2007 @ 7:36 pm

    Good point, null.

Unfortunately, people like Coulter will always cull a following from supporters and detractors alike. They say what they say to provoke a response, positive or negative, and that’s the key to their longevity. Love her or lover to hater her — it’s all the same. She will remain in the spotlight as long as she can strike a nerve — or until we all, finally, grow tired of her… but by then someone new will be ready to take her place. Until then, she and her kind remain the poster children for how to abuse your freedom for notoriety and personal gain.

  184. TROLLBAIT3000 Says:

’m sorry, but if I’m not mistaken, Ann Coulter has a LAW degree. (That, of course, isn’t the same thing as “practicing law”, but still…….)

    Comment by JosephW — June 26, 2007 @ 9:04 pm

Once again proving that America’s instiututions of higher education will sell a degree to damn near anyone.

  185. Mr. Bush Goes To Hell Says:

“Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Liar” “Lies and the Filthy liars that Tell them” Or whatever those brilliant tomes by Al Franken were. When Cheney was in the hospital on of your View babes basically said, “Good, I hope he dies.”
Rosie O’Donnel. Sean Penn. Do I have to go on?

As far as Lush goes, it is TRUE, and Franken used FACTS to SHOW it.

I don’t know who said “Cheney should DIE”, but I DID say he should be IN JAIL and TORTURED for his TREASON.

Rosie, Sean Penn tell the TRUTH about your TREASONOUS AWOL Bush.

    ALL of them use FACTS.

Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Dildo, etc., use LIES and HALF-TRUTHS and INNUENDO.

    Need I SAY MORE????

  186. Melissa Martin Says:

I was watching Chris Matthews like every night but decided to switch to Jeopardy since Ann Coulter was on. So I missed Elizabeth Edwards’s call I’m sorry to say. Go Elizabeth!! She’s one classy lady. I also like her husband. I’ve Googled Ann tonight trying to find out about her early years and can’t find anything. Am I the only one who notices her Adam’s apple? I would like to see a high school yearbook picture to prove she isn’t a boy. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it adds to her hypocrisy.

  187. rightwingislonely Says:

Yeah. Way to miss the point of what I said. Maybe you should read what she has written and actually THINK about some of the things she has said and not get all emotional and wet yourself. Yes she does say outrageous things, but there are those on the other side who say simalar things and get a pass. There’s your hypocrisy.
Good Night. This is a grand waste of time.

  188. rightwingislonely Says:

You don’t need to say a thing. You just made my point.
