Iraq war debate falls off media’s radar.

Major news outlets devoted just 1 percent of their coverage last week to the Iraq policy debate, according to the Project for Excellence in Journalism. “Those findings are indicative of a trend in recent weeks in which coverage of the political debate over the war has diminished substantially.”

  2. PRIMVS INTER PARES says:

  3. MsJoanne says:

Well of course. Paris was getting out of jail. Now Paris is out of jail.

Is there anything else going on in this country that matters more?

More Americans continue to die. More Iraqis continue to die and become displaced.

And Paris – and bears – are more important; more relevant.

THE DEBATE from now until the election of 08 has been, is, and shall continue to be THE IRAQ WAR. A candidate’s viewpoint on the war will make or break their candidacy.

  15. Rosencrantz says:

Why should the media devote more time to the debate when they already know what will happen. They don’t allow any exports who don’t have political motives on, they equate the truth and facts with heresay and pandering, they keep having people who are constantly wrong to predict policy outcomes without question, etc.

And since we all know the media isn’t going to start holding people accountable, fact checking, OR giving voice to truth and evidence even if it is politically one-sided, then there really is no point in doing the story.

So really this is moreso about quality than quantity if you ask me.

#12 I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a scam however – something which has so handily kept people in line for all of these centures. How else could a ruling class do this with such absolution from above? How else can one justify judging others? How else could we engage in bigotry and separatism and claim that it’s somehow “the will of god”??

And without a construct of “heaven vs. hell”, then how could they possibly judge one another?? It makes for very convenient crowd control, doesn’t it?

And it certainly provides the vehicle for hatred of others, discrimination against others, and continuous judgment of others…

I’m loving Christopher Hitchin’s new book “God Is Not Great”! It’s no wonder it’s topping the best seller lists. It traces religious fundamentalism and how it has been used as a weapon against anyone who doesn’t believe as you do, with great absolution from the supposed Almighty. Now what could be better than that?

And it clearly delineates that when one’s ego moves to sheer “ruse” of espousing that you are taking direction “from your father above”, that that individual has definitely crossed the line into pathological religion – aka using religion to condone one’s egomania.

Actually you’re wrong, ( “it’s been used for 1000’s of years to control you”). The years are wrong, but I won’t go there. You control yourself, you have free will. Choose right, choose wrong. Either way you’ll know it in your heart. But to blame your plight on others’ choices of religion? Sorry, you have destiny over yourself. Otherwise, call it quits.

There have also been some prominent defections recently, which the Taliban spokesmen did not want to talk about.”

  27. veritas says:

leftcoast: I see we can be at it again! It’s the debate to which all debates distill in the long run….ah, the concept of Divine Order versus Free Will. I’ve dabbled on both sides of this issue and, of course, these may be mutually exclusive concepts. If one believes in God and the Divine Order he’s arranged for us, then is it really “free will” at all? It can be said that our “supposed choice” in that “so-called free will” of ours is a preordained mindset created to appear as a choice when it’s essentially the choice of the Divine One. Beginning to get it…?? I can see that you’re ready to go one plane higher in your spiritual program but keep pulling yourself back down a rung when you get yourself caught up in your own confusion and contradictions.

  30. veritas says:

Conversely, if we really do in fact have the ability to make a true choice which is somehow in conflict with God’s preordained plan for us, how do we ever know that it our own choice or part of God’s plan for us?? We don’t. So the perennial constant here is that it’s a debate which has no real answer. It’s the old chicken/egg ringaround. But it certainly is something to ponder and cogitate on. I’ve watched theologians debate this issue and find themselves each in a tied up little knot at the end of the debate….chasing their tail and coming up with no answer.

  32. Frank J says:

    #30 that is pretty stupid.

  33. veritas says:

Lefty: What I am attempting to say here is that you should be quite careful about throwing around the concept of “free will” because those who truly believe in God and God’s individual and Divine Plan for each of us fly in the face of free will. Or perhaps that “free will” which conceivably provides a vehicle of “choice” for each of us is programmed into God’s Divine Plan?? Somehow?? Or is it??

As for me, I’ve followed many religious programs over the years from Catholicism to Unitarianism and everything in between and am still at sea as to how I perceive God…..if, in fact, I perceive one at all.

  34. veritas says:

#32 Stupid because you fail to understand it? Or stupid because you can’t that pea brain of yours adequately around it?

  35. Frank J says:

Since this has become and open thread I thought this news was interesting.

Michael Moore Demands Government Funded Cheeseburgers

    “CHEESEBURGERS!!!”

Controversial documentary filmmaker Michael Moore has found a new cause: Demanding the government pay for cheeseburgers. He argues that cheeseburgers are a right that no one should be denied access to. “CHEESEBURGERS!!!” he added, and then rifled through a dumpster behind a McDonald’s.

Moore plans on making a new film showing numerous horror stories from people denied access to cheeseburgers. He hopes the movie will move people to demand universal cheeseburger coverage from their government. “CHEESEBURGERS!!!” Moore stated while violently shaking a reporter.

Though filming hasn’t even begun, the new project has already garnered criticism. Conservative pundit and noted cheeseburger connoisseur Jonah Goldberg has attacked the idea of the government paying for cheeseburgers, saying, “There’s no such thing as a free cheeseburger. Universal cheeseburger coverage will require a huge increase in taxes. Also, with so many people demanding their ‘free’ cheeseburgers, the government will be forced to ration them and put people on cheeseburger waiting lists. Personally, I’d gladly pay for a cheeseburger today rather than wait for a free one on Tuesday.”

Moore’s supporters are claiming that the Bush Administration is trying to shut down this movie, pointing to an altercation Moore recently had with police. Yesterday, the police were called on Michael Moore after he ran up to a drive-thru window and shouted, “CHEESEBURGERS!!!” frightening the Taco Bell employees inside. Moore then violently tried to claw his way through the tiny window until officers shot him with an elephant tranquilizer gun. “CHEESE… burg… ers…,” was his reported final statement before collapsing to the ground and being dragged away by a backhoe.

But because we love our life as it is we are willing to let others parish. And it happens everyday. Look to Sudan or pick a spot on the globe. We apparently love our lives greater than the lives others.

I’m quite sick of this situation with Cheney going nuts and my daily codeine is making me drowsy. Furthermore, my yesterday’s encounter with ace and the rest of the 9/11 conspiracy fools left me depressed and these gutter trolls like Jake, VV, Frank J and PIP are just tiring. No flair, no style, no ability to get any character development done. Screw you, you goddamn GOP-wanna-be losers.

At least there’s a few places such as TP where some real news is being reported. The main stream media is part of a vast right-wing conspiracy, and it should be of no surprise that they feed us Paris Hilton stories instead of ones that matter.

    Thanks TP!

    Real news? Uh… ok.

And what’s wrong with Paris Hilton stories? Pretty pictures of a hot heiress. You’ve got to be gay or a woman not to like that.

I like hot just as much as the next hot blooded man does, but first off, she ain’t hot – you’d have to be a republican lesbian to think that.

Secondly, the main stream media ‘reports’ on Paris Hilton and other sensational things to the exclusion of real news such as how attacking Iran would be WAY more disastrous than our feeble nation building in Iraq.

On the day that TP reported the deletion of possibly millions of emails and accounts used by White House officials on RNC servers, a quick look at Fox, MSNBC, the Washington Post, and CNN – there was nothing.

One need to look no further than your comments to see how effective the MSM is in brainwashing weaker minds like yours.

#12 I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a scam however – something which has so handily kept people in line for all of these centures.

Then stop distorting the facts and put the blame on Sadaam and the U.N. where it belongs. ;)

Yeah, saw this last week. We talked about it. This is the new WH strategy. There is an oxymoron.

Define ’support’. Could also please tell us, because I sure don’t know, what IS ‘the mission’?

Maybe if I knew how to support this mission, I’d be able to, but since there is no mission, my support would be to bring them home, saving lives.

I call what’s happening in Iraq a military adventure.

Put ‘Bush Regime’s ill-considered’ in front of it and I think that says it.
