This past weekend, Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) delivered a speech commemorating the 50th anniversary of his Protestant denomination, the United Church of Christ. In the speech, Obama argued that faith in the United States has been “hijacked” by “the so-called leaders of the Christian Right, all too eager to exploit what divides us.”
Last night on Fox’s Hannity and Colmes, right-wing pundit Ann Coulter responded to Obama’s comments by implicating him as a terrorist. Coulter remarked, “Anyone named B. Hussein Obama should not use the words ‘hijack’ and ‘religion’ in the same sentence.” Host Sean Hannity added that Obama’s remarks were part of a “black separatist agenda.”
Watch it:
Fox News is still planning to hold a Democratic presidential debate cosponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus in September. Yet this sort of racist and religious bigotry aired by Fox is nothing new. Earlier this year, the network basely suggested that Obama attended a radical anti-American madrassa “financed by Saudis” as a 6-year-old old in Indonesia.
News Hounds has more.
UPDATE: Yesterday on ABC’s Good Morning America, Coulter said, “If I’m going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I’ll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot.” Crooks and Liars has the video.
Transcript:
OBAMA: Along the way faith stopped being used to bring us together faith started being used to drive us apart. Faith got hijacked.
Faith got hijacked partly because of the so-called leaders of the christian right who’ve been all to eager to exploit what divides us. At every opportunity they’ve told evangelical christians that democrats disrespect their values had hate their church while telling the rest of the country that religions americans care only about issues like abortion and gay marriage, school prayer and intelligent design.
COLMES: That was presidential hopeful Barack Obama accusing conservatives of hijacking religion from the democrats. The freshmen senator that the christian coalition has pushed its agenda on the american people and made anyone who disagreed appear immoral. he also took a shot at the religious right for criticizing his church.
Joining us now is author of Godless Ann Coulter and Fox News political analyst and writer at gather.com Laura Schwartz. Now ann, when you write a book called Godless about which you’re talking about liberals isn’t that divisive?
COULTER: Right unlike a guy running for president making that little speech in a church in order to advance his nomination to be the democrat presidential nominee.
COLMES: Oh, so only republicans can talk in churches
COULTER: No, but I do think someone named B. Hussein Obama should avoid using hijack and religion in the same sentence.
COLMES: So in other words you want to paint him as a terrorist by continuing to highlight his middle name.
COULTER: right, just avoid those two together.
COLMES: I see, so only you can talk like that. Only conservatives. Someone who’s middle name is hussein should not talk like that.
COULTER: Avoid, hijack and religion.
COLMES: I see. When you say for example, Democrats cannot “conceive of hate speech toward christians because in their eyes christians always deserve it”
COULTER: Right, as per Obama’s speech, right now. How divisive we are…
COLMES: But when you said, “assuming you aren’t the fetus the lefts most dangerous religious belief is their adoration of violent criminals.” — you’re not painting…
COULTER: That’s a beautiful line, isn’t it?
COLMES: In other words, only the right has religion the way it should be but not the left. Right?
COULTER: That’s correct.
COLMES: So, I think we made the point Laura that Ann Coulter might be, you know, Exhibit A on how they like to use religion and try to clobber liberals over the head with it. Of course unfairly so, and inaccurately so.
SCHWARTZ: Well not to mention Pat Roberson who said that liberals want to do to the evangelicals what Nazi germany did to the Jews or Jerry Fallwell before he passed saying that “hillary Clinton will will motivate the evangelicals more than Satan himself.” You know, this is not the kind of language we need in politics today and Barack Obama’s begger message of his entire speech from the weekend his central theme was bringing Americans together. So instead of be divisive and try to divide let’s look at what comes together. It’s an interesting trend among evangelicals these days. Because they are focusing on ending poverty, saving mother earth for our children and working toward health care. I think the democrats might have a bigger trend than evangelicals this time.
COLMES: That’s right. Ann do you agree with Barack Obama when he says “As children of God we believe in the worth and dignity of every human being”?
COULTER: Um, yeah, we actually do believe it. Which is why we don’t believe you should be puncturing the skulls of fetuses and sucking the brains out. And by the way, when he talks about how divisive Christians are… Why are we the ones who have to give in so that the world can come together. Why don’t they give in on issues like abortion?
HANNITY: We talk about being divisive, but we have his pastor on this program, remember who has a very black separatist point of view, about the black church, dedicate ourselves to the black community, the black this… Well I confronted him over this, lets look at Obama’s pastor, right here, who he now distances himself from….
(BEING VIDEO CLIP)
HANNITY: IT seems to be that you say the “black community,” “black family,” “black work ethic, black community…”
(CROSSTALK)
HANNITY: Sir, Whether you like it or not I’m going to get my words in.
(END CLIP)
HANNITY: It’s all about the “black community,” it’s a “black separatist” agenda.
Hannity? LOL just LOL
June 26th, 2007 at 2:18 pm"Fox News" has taken the place of "Government Intelligence" in Websters definition of "oxymoron".
June 26th, 2007 at 2:21 pmWell this is just FOX crap, but Obama needs to come out swinging on it, or Ann Coulter will continue to trash him.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:21 pmHannity and Coulter?
Persona non grata.

June 26th, 2007 at 2:23 pmLOL too funny. I don't get it, but hey when you fox noise, who cares. This is for entertainment purposes only after all. Oh look Paris Hilton!
June 26th, 2007 at 2:25 pmI'm ashamed of Sen. Barrack Obama's comments about the GOP highjacking holiness.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:25 pmI do not believe in punching females, but I would make an exception for Ann Coulter. I would knock her block off if she got anywhere near me.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:25 pmObama is a token presidential candidate if I ever saw one. All fluff, no merits.

June 26th, 2007 at 2:29 pmHate-filled, black-souled, Coulter is nothing if she is not an inflammatory boil on humanity. She has also called for the assassination of John Edwards.
Where is the outrage from the media watchdogs?
Too busy raking in their $$ from the cretins and misanthropes who like to watch the bitch.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:29 pmFox is f*ck all scared of Barack Obama. :)
June 26th, 2007 at 2:29 pmBigotry at FOX is nothing new, especially coming from Sean or Ann. If they keep working at it, soon most of their audience will think Obama had something to do with 9/11.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:29 pmDaryll, are you not ashamed of Ann Coulter's comments? If not, then please renounce your religious beliefs because you are not following them. Oh yeah right, your religious beliefs are based on fantasy.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:30 pmWho listens to that bit** Coulter? She is a nut. I wouldn't give her the time a day.

Ashamed? I can sort of understand angry or disappointed, but ashamed? That sounds like the same sort of throwaway line than Coulter used in that clip.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:31 pmCoulter and Hannity are evil incarnate.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:31 pmIf religion in the US has been hijacked by the "vast right wing conspiracy" - sorry Barack - the Left can take some measure of "spiritual" comfort in knowing they are on the Left Road with the United Church of Christ. There is not a Left wing cause they do not embrace: pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, socialized health care, anti-war, open borders, etc. etc. etc. This should be called the "Church of I AM Special No Matter What I Do."
Now let's get the choir practice underway, (tap-tap-tap)
"Me-me-me-me-me-me-me........"
My all time favourite source in finding Left-wack "religious" updates is the World Council of Churches. Anti-Israel and sympathetic to the plight of terrorists, these pathetically naive types should just save our enemies time and jump up on the cross. Hallelujah!!
June 26th, 2007 at 2:31 pmI would hope Fox and any other conservative source would be decent to Obama so that it would be that much harder for Hillary.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:32 pmSen. Barack Obama is slowly shifting toward the center and yet Hail Hannity and Marqueress de Coulter still bashing Obama as a terrorist. Apparently, you still can't criticize The Religious Right. Obama: DON'T STOP. GIVE 'EM HOLY ROLLERS THE HELL THEY DESERVE.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:32 pmTo be still more accurate, Fox News violated the Geneva Convention when they incited the American people to war against Iraq.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:32 pmWell anyone dumb enough to believe in Jesus, Virgin Births, Great floods, would beleive fox news.
Stupid American Christians!
June 26th, 2007 at 2:34 pmHannity and Coulter are vile entertainers, some folks like their venom just as some folks like Babs, Mike Moore, Rosie and the lefts group of gab. I am sure Coulter is saying what her mouth breathing crowd wants to hear. Hannity is the personification of KEEP AMERICA WASP, so we know where he is coming from. Obama isn't a WASP so they do not like him pure and simple.
Furthermore, if you look at black conservatives who agree with these GOPhers, you will find that they are WASP too, just in blackface. I am a black man and I am just calling it like I see it. RUN /TROLLS ATTACK
BTW-Do not upset their Leave it to Beaver (Ann Coulter as June Cleaver) status quo. They gets angry and defensive.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:35 pmFox WANT Clinton to run. It will make a repug victory in 08' almost assured. If Obama gets the nod, the repugs will almost certainly lose in a landslide. Thus Fox is a Hillary cheerleader.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:35 pmThen Abraham Lincoln and George Washington would believe Fox News.

June 26th, 2007 at 2:36 pmThese idiots are amusing. Circus time.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:36 pmhope mAnn's crabs hopped on over to Hannity for a party
June 26th, 2007 at 2:37 pmColmes deserves his ass kicked for representing the left on this propaganda show.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:37 pmCoulter will always paint Obama as a terrorist based on his name, because she can't find any other "scandal" about him to exploit, and arguing meaningful issues just isn't her thing. At least Colmes called her on it -- which is more than I can say for Chris Matthews gushing about her "beautiful writing" and "brilliant mind".
Poor, poor Ann. As the American public gets more and more jaded, she continually has to find ways to be more outrageous to maintain the flow of attention her way that she so desperately needs.
Coulter isn't the only one who clutches at straws to attack Obama. Hannity's best evidence against Obama is some comments from his former pastor??????? Sean -- wanting to support the black community doesn't make someone a racist or a separatist. Even if you could find a clip of this pastor actually advocating separatism, racism, or any kind of hate-white speech, that doesn't automatically mean Obama embraces those same beliefs.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:37 pmI think VV is about to lose it.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:37 pmCan somebody please rip Ann Coulter's dress off to find out if she is actually a male in drag, or had a sex change operation?

June 26th, 2007 at 2:41 pmPeople tend to forget that the majority of Christians in this country are not right-wing evangelicals. The majority still belong to mainline, nonfascist denominations. The media (and the Christofacists' loud, whiny mouths) has created the opposite perception. "Christian" does not automatically equal "dominionist".

What the hell is wrong with you?
June 26th, 2007 at 2:42 pmChristopher Hitchens is right, religion poisons everything. I can't wait for the day an openly atheist person wins the Presidency. Sure I'd prefer the religious left to the religious right being in power, but when will we move beyond discussing political issues in terms of god and faith? How ridiculous is it that, in the 21st century, at CNN's 'faith forum' Democratic presidential candidates were asked how they tell the difference when praying between god's voice and their voice!! And do you "believe" in evolution as if scientific facts about the natural world are to be picked cafeteria style according to one's tastes. The state of our political discourse is appalling and the sooner 'faith' is taken out of the mix and becomes a personal issue again, the better.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:42 pmNumerous meetings were held at the WH with leaders from congregations. The sole purpose was to find whether their congregation could be persuaded to support WH agendas (some having nothing to do with faith, but with war). Rove laughed at this bunch as they left.

June 26th, 2007 at 2:53 pmCoulter, Hannity, and the rest of the rabid right buzz will do everything they can to exploit Obama's middle name of Hussein to make as much connection as possible to Iraq's dictator. Yet Hussein isn't that uncommon a name, and Saddam certainly didn't have a monopoly on it. It was also the name of a very respected king in Jordan (and ally of the U.S.).
And equating Obama with Osama bin Laden would only work on the most stupid slice of Americans. (oh wait -- this would be the same slice of Americans who believe that Saddam Hussein orchestrated the events of 9/11).

#37 Perhaps I should have explained "blackface" in spirit, not in the literal sense. Obviously Hannity and Coulter do not speak for all WASP. Sorry if I impuned those not on the Riech Wing agenda gulag. Its just hate the "agree with us or you are WRONG" attitude that is so repulsive but pervasive in politics today. Most talk radio and TV is conservative so that side has the greatest visibility in those mediums.
The same problem exist in many churches, follow a conservative interpetation of scripture or YOU are WRONG. I am so glad I do not depend of PASTORS or PUNDITS for my salvation. Can you imagine Jesus being interviewed by Hannity and Coulter? An entire show would be devoted to him supporting prostitution because he doesn't want them stoned. They would question the veracity of his 40 days in the wilderness. Thats what they do.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:59 pmI see Vailent venus is here, you can almost smell the KY.
I think Obama is mistaken, it is the radical Christian right which has hijacked the republican party. Even the middle of the road, republicans are having a hard time recognizing who they voted for. The best trick Rove played was making Bush appear to be a mainstream conservative, instead of the far right, idiot he is.

To be completely accurate: Pres. Bush has fostered an environment in Iraq that allows and encourages people to join terrorist oranizations, therefore, Pres. Bush is the biggest enabler of terrorists.
June 26th, 2007 at 2:59 pmI'll be very concerned if Obama WASN'T smeared by Fox News. They smear him because they know he is a legitimate threat.

Comment by simplicio ---- Right? And then anyone who believes in that drivel can be sent to a 'camp', and kept away from the public so that they can never 'preach' their 'views' to anyone ever again! And that way we can ensure that anyone who is even an eensy weensy bit religious never gets into political office, and then there would truly be no danger of their views affecting their judgment......Y'know simp, the only way to ensure TRUE separation of church and state is to separate the 'religious' from the 'state'. /end sarcasm.

June 26th, 2007 at 3:01 pmRovian Justice in the Banana Republic of Alabama
2007-06-25 11:56.
Dana Simpson, a Republican, had to open her mouth and blow the whistle. So now the Rovian mafioso-like intimidation begins:
The response to Simpson’s affidavit has been a series of brusque dismissive statements – all of them unsworn – from others who figured in the discussion and the federal prosecutor in the Siegelman case, who has now made a series of demonstrably false statements concerning the matter. She’s been smeared as “crazy†and as a “disgruntled contract bidder.†And something nastier: after her intention to speak became known, Simpson’s house was burned to the ground, and her car was driven off the road and totaled. Clearly, there are some very powerful people in Alabama who feel threatened. Her case starts to sound like a chapter out of John Grisham’s book The Pelican Brief.
Um, national media? National media where are you? This sounds like something you might want to look into — perhaps? Maybe?
Wouldn’t it be nice if the folks in the national media did their jobs these days? Well someone other than Seymour Hersh of course.

You all are not able to comprehend the actual point. The term "black" was used to degrade individuals with a darker skin tone during the days of slavery(blackie). Why do we continue to categorize ourselves as a term that is full of degradation. Using this term to categorize ourselves is equivalent to calling each other N*ggers.
June 26th, 2007 at 3:03 pm#78 - I work with a few true African Americans.

June 26th, 2007 at 3:04 pm#92 and since faith is belief in things unseen with no evidence whatsoever it should be a personal matter. As it is, the fact that 'people of faith' are the only acceptable Presidential candidates for either party is absurd. Why should believing in things for which there is no evidence be a necessary quality in an individual running for office? Why is your belief in jesus or mohammed or whatever you happen to believe any more valid than belief in zeus or thor? It's not but that doesn't seem to keep people believing that their particular belief is the right one.

A kid in a chicago(I think) HS about 2 years ago got suspended for doing that. He was the only kid in school who was an immigrant from Africa (South Africa in this case, and he was white), and every year they handed out an achievement award to the African-American student who got the most votes from the student body, so he started a campaign to vote for him.
They forced him to apologize in front of the entire student body and faculty, and he had a couple day suspension.

As well you should, as a Christian fundementalist, be Daryll. After all, you aided and abetted the hijacking of your religion, so when someone points it out to you you should feel deeply ashamed.
Particularly after reading what the book of Mathew had to say about people who broadcast their religion at the tops of their voices.
Oh, wait, that assumes you have actually read the book doesn't it?
VV:
Were it not for you religion changing whenever it is convenient to your argument, I would probably be surprised at just how incoherent your vapid and vile hatred is.

Comment by Daryll
Which is why, Daryll, those very people have chosen to describe themselves as African American, a term which you also reject.
But this is what makes me seriously doubt you're Black, African American or anything but a big phony:
Most are true Africans that are not mixed with American blood. There is a difference in physical features between a true African and a dark American.
What the hell is "American blood"? And you need to start paying more attention. Very dark African Americans are just as American as you; take a few classes on genetics sometime. And "true Africans" show an enormous range of physical features, along tribal and regional lines.

June 26th, 2007 at 3:14 pmso, like, where's a link to the whole Obama speech. I'm tried of reading Murdoch and Coulter's take on Obama.
And if I read one more time about Obama's corrupt backers and it turns out to be a rehashing of the stale Rezko story, I'll hurl.
This is how Murdoch created the impression that the Clintons were corrupt; he'd run headline after headline about little scandals and never post the retractions when they stories went nowhere.
I mean, what's with peddling Obama's middle name as if he were a terrorist. Apparently King Hussein of Jordan was a great friend of the USA, but that's not who Ann wants you to think of.
BTW, Hussein is the Islamic equivalent of John or James or Paul or Peter. It's hardly a shocking name.

Nope. They aren't so tied up in their own egos as to think that other people need always share their opinions, and they don't seek validation by forcing others to pretend to share their opinions.
Indeed, they very rarely discuss religion seen as they actually know what they believe and live it, rather then knowing what they had better pretend to believe and preaching it.

Yet us leftie bloggers are "profane" and "shrill." Apparently, having to back up assertions with facts doesn't mean much if you drop an occasional f-bomb.
And some people wonder why so many people loathe the media in this country ...
.
June 26th, 2007 at 3:36 pmRoger_Roger
Neither of the top two are that strong as candidates, and both of them are likely to destroy each other before the elections.
Clinton is despised by the left almost as much as she is loathed by the right, a few pretty speeches and purposely-rigged-to-be-meaningless no votes isn't going to change her historic support for the Iraq war even as the Democrat base protested against it. All the money in the world isn't going to change the fact that she is in essence, unelectable.
Obama, really did come out of nowhere. While I think he is a strong candidate, while I think he may be a good president, he is Hillary's main rival and she will go out of her way to make him look unelectable. He may recover for another run later though.
Which means while it is still probably going to be Hillary or Obama, Edwards is not out of this race yet.

Asking someone to pay...giving them a choice (My wallet, My choice) should be the standard....demanding that the Gov't step in and beat up the rich guy is just messed up.

I'm pretty sure that most Jews would say you're not a Jew anymore, but it would all depend on what you mean when you say "Jew". Most of the highly secular Jews I've known consider themselves Jewish. The Goyim look at Jews and ask, "Which is it? Religion? Tribe?"
But I'm sorry, if you're going to be a Jew, you're stuck with Joe.

Like I keep telling you, Daryll, you don't get to make that rule for other people. You can make it for yourself, if that works for you, but you don't get to tell millions of black Americans that (a) they can't call themselves "black" and (b) they can't call themselves African-American.
Just like you don't get to tell some white people that they don't get to call themselves Italian-American or Irish-American or Hispanic or Jewish or whatever. Humans self-identify, it's what they do. You self-identify as a "dark American", but others choose to do so differently. If you're so interested in harmony, stop telling others how to live their lives.

Particularly if their kids fall to the evils of board games involving dragons, elves, dwarves, halflings and dice with waaay too many sides to them?
They send them off to be reprogrammed.

Then the girls vagina is sealed with thorns so that, when healed, there will only be a small hole at the bottom for urine and menstrual fluid.
When the girl is about 12 or so she will be bought by a man who pays her father two goats and a cow. On their wedding night, he will take a knife and re-open her so that she can produce babies for him.

But are you not picking and choosing your biblical passages when you say the message of the Bible is to love your neighbor. Jesus never saisd to ignore the Old Testament, in fact he said the opposite.
So should we not paint all Christians as Inquisitors because the ENTIRE church found justification for it in the Bible?
My argument is that extremism, is extremism. I will grant the fact that the Islamic doctrine of martyrdom makes Islam particularly troubling, but all the abortiona doctor murderers find their justification in the Christian Bible. You may think they are mis-reading it, but then, everybody could make that argument about everyone else who reads that book! No two religious leaders see it the same way. Comment by Bruce Gorton
And I don't see why you consider it a devaluation. Call yourself what you want but you simply don't get to tell other people how they identify themselves.
Well, you can try, but you're going to find out that people choose their own identity.
Years ago, I worked with a white South African woman (I had such a crush...) who identified herself as African. Which, given that was where she'd been born, certainly seemed appropriate. She could just as easily have identified herself as Afrikaner, or Dutch-African. Why should anyone else be allowed to deny her that?
I want you and Daryll to visit the Black Rose tavern in Boston and start telling the regulars that they're not Irish-American. See how that flies.

"They were praying on behalf of President Bush. They truly want God to intercede on behalf President Bush and to continue to instruct him daily."
Are you sure that there weren't a couple of them that might have been hoping Zeus would instruct him?
I would certainly feel better if that were the case. See Daryll, you are an atheist as well. I bet you don't believe in Zeus or Odin. See, even you can let go of the brainwashing!!

June 26th, 2007 at 4:56 pmFrom Wikipedia -- on Jesus Camp
Rachael, who also attends Levi's church (her father is assistant pastor), is seen praying over a bowling ball early in the film --- Ok, wtf?
Some media reports misinterpreted this as "worshipping" the president, but the children were actually "praying over him." Indeed, the woman clearly says to "pray for" and "speak a blessing to" Bush. --- Rumor disspelled?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus_Camp --- Either way you lean, it's a disturbing view.

June 26th, 2007 at 5:00 pm#231 - So how can we expect anyone to think they have it right? --- I would suggest reading it yourself....studying it with like-minded people who want to understand it also...and ask for help for context or passages that are not easily understood with a trusted clergyman(?). Don't take ANYTHING that someone tells you as truth...seek it for yourself. Autamatons can be found anywhere.
June 26th, 2007 at 5:01 pmFrom Wikipedia;
All three children, despite their youth, are very devout charismatic Christians. Levi, who has ambitions of being a pastor, has already preached several sermons at his father's church, Rock of Ages Church in St. Robert, Missouri.
He is homeschooled (as are many of the campers), and learns physical science from a book that attempts to reconcile the creationist account with scientific principles.

Forcing a child to be ignorant is the worst abuse I can imagine.
June 26th, 2007 at 5:03 pmThe sickening thing about this documentary, was that it was in favour of deprogramming, which is in essence taking every method out of bad fiction utilised by evil cults to indoctrinate their followers, and making Jesus the end result.
Comment by Bruce Gorton
That’s sick. It sounds like torture — torture sanctioned by a child’s own parents.
Do you remember the name of the film? Yikes, I’m not actually sure I want to see it.
Comment by Zooey — June 26, 2007 @ 4:50 pm
Wow! It is considered torture to let your child worship Jesus. Zooey, are you a part of the ACLU? This is the reason why violence is rampant in schools. Because the ACLU had prayer and worship prohibited from school grounds, satan has infiltrated into our school system. I hope you are happy.
June 26th, 2007 at 5:03 pmOne point I would like to make, Jesus was neither a republican, or a democrat. He was the a messiah, the king of the jews, the son of god, heretic, or a fantasy person, depending on how you want to view him. To coopt religion especially in a country dedicated to freedom of religion, and seperation of church and state is disturbing. The use of radical religion either Christian, Muslim, or whatever to justify violence is terrible as well. It perverts a religion, and destroys what it should stand for.

June 26th, 2007 at 5:06 pmHe is also taught that global warming is a non-issue.
At the camp, he preaches a sermon in which he declares that his generation is key to Jesus's coming back. Rachael, who also attends Levi's church (her father is assistant pastor), is seen praying over a bowling ball early in the film, and frequently passes Christian tracts (including some by Jack Chick) to people she meets.
She doesn't think very highly of non-charismatic churches (or "dead churches," as she calls them), feeling they aren't "churches that God likes to go to."
Tory is a member of the children's praise dance team at Christ Triumphant Church. She frequently dances to Christian heavy metal music

My memories of the Black Rose are, well, fuzzy. I'd been working at a microbrewers' conference for four or five days previously and by "working" I mean "drinking." Several of us (including a guy named Paddy, no kidding) ended up there very late to celebrate my birthday. Something about the combination of Guinness and Black Bush . . . suffice it to say that one should not do this the night before a six a.m. flight cross-country.
June 26th, 2007 at 5:13 pmKrazny - Here's the difference between devout Christans and Jews and extremist Islamists - contemporary Judeo-Christians will not threaten to kill you if you draw cartoons about God. We might not buy tickets to a film in which Jesus is portrayed as a gay man, etc. or wiah to see a dung-smeared portrayal of the Blessed Mother, but you who wish to see such "art" have no need to fear we will blow up the theatre or museum. We do not convince children and impressionable teens to blow themselves up and take as many atheists with them as possible. We condemn and convict zealots like Eric Rudolph who kill in the name of LIFE. We live next door to people with wide-ranging beliefs and do not plot them harm.
For you to compare radical Islam with contemporary Judeo-Cgristian beliefs is disgustingly ignorant - but not unexpected.

June 26th, 2007 at 5:22 pmI see. So the thread is about Obama being smeared as at terrorist again and we have PIP pretending to know something about Islam even though that's off topic. (BTW, female circumcision is practiced by a small sect in the horn of Africa where it likely predates Islam and is not an official Muslim ritual. Unlike Jewish circumcision.)
So, what is it that frightens these trolls about Obama that they want to paint him as an oportunist, and fringe Christian, or a crypto-Muslim??? I'd say it's because he's a genuine, thoughtful progessive liberal Christian. And that's enough to make the Christian Right sh!t bricks because they know they're really Pharisees.
BTW, progressive liberal Christians might want to read Leviticus 25 for what can be described as the Biblical version of proto-socialism. WWJD??? Well, he'd go for single-payer universal healthcare. He'd end the war in Iraq immediately. He'd demand Israel & Palestine recognize each other. (It's so one-sided if only Israel is supposed to be legit, don't you think?)
The reason why Jesus Camps have to exist is because fundamentalist, literalist Christians need to indoctrinate their Children because otherwise they can't reconcile the modern world with their simplistic faith. It's odd. You'd think the Christian Right would recognize that a Jesus Camp is no different than a fundamentalist Madrassa.

June 26th, 2007 at 5:24 pmChristianity preaches hatred and bigotry. They are all hypocrites.
June 26th, 2007 at 5:24 pmMake no mistake about it dimwit Daryll.
The first thing Jesus did when he began his ministry after a little slight of hand action, was to condemn the religious leaders of the day, which of course was comprised of a governing council known as the "Sanhedrin", which was made up of various sects and disciplines including scribes, Pharisees, Saducee's and Elders.
The Sandhedrin was equivalent to the Christian Coalition today, except the Christian Coalition has only unnoffical authority, whereas the Sanhedrin had official authority to govern the people. The Sanhedrin was a rightist conservative and fundamentalist movement.
Jesus was considered leftist. A radical.
Thats historical fact. Not opinion or belief. Just historical fact.

Kraz, you are correct in spirit, if not in magnitude or chronology. The Chrisitan religion took a dark turn shortly after its inception, and continud in that vein for over a thousand years.
We know that as early as 300 CE (or thereabouts) that the Church was employing TORTURE to weed out non believers, or those who challenged the church's authority or teaching, (heretics) and those tortures included the RACK.
By the time Gregory and Sixtus launched the holy inquisitions and the crusades, the church had already "racked up" (pardon the pun) almost 700 years of cruelty that surpasses that of Nazi Germany.
Only folllowing the reformers did the church ever see a glimmer of true christianity, and even many of them burned women and children alive for suspicion of witchcraft or devil worship.

Spoken like a woman who would know....
June 26th, 2007 at 5:36 pmDaryll, have you read the Bible? I don't think you have. There is not a single line in the four Gospels about homosexuality. It's not there. And when Paul speaks of homosexuality, he's refering to orgies and temple prostitution. Not the same thing as gay/lesbian relationship.
What Jesus said about adultery is cryptic. He spares the women caught in adultery saying she can only be judged by those without sin. (That is, no one.) And then he says one should forgive seven times seventy times. (That is, always.) What he's against is institutionalised failure. He doesn't forbid divorce, but he does think the legalists take divorce for granted and don't seek to heal a bleeding marriage. (Even today, one has to beware what some divorce lawyers are willing to say to get a big settlement.)
Where do you get this notion about Jesus liking the Rich? Isn't as difficult for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven as it is for a camel to pass thru the eye of a needle? Didn't Jesus tell the rich young man to sell all he owned and give it to the poor? Don't offer such nonsense.
Daryll, read your Bible. You are a Pharisee.

A. Jesus NEVER, EVER, EVER mentions ONE SINGLE TIME, ANYTHING regarding homosexuality. NOTHING.
B. Jesus condemned not the adulterers, but the "good men" who brought the adulters before him. Jesus NEVER condemned adulterers.
C. Jesus publically endorsed the paying taxes, and even befriended a tax collector, and appointed him (Levi) as one of the original 12 Apostles.
Like most right wing inbred self professed "Christians", you know NOTHING about Christ.
June 26th, 2007 at 5:37 pmAbout the African American thing- I don’t call myself that because I’m completely comfortable with black, and I just find African American to be umm…clumsy. Clumsy to read, clumsy to say. But that’s just me. Also, if Daryll’s skin is as dark as tar, and he does not want to be black, he gets not to be black. As he said, he’s an American, period. Fine. That means that if someone turns him down for a job, or denies him a house or apartment because of the color of his skin, he shouldn’t complain about it. After all, he’s not black.
By the same token, me with my cafe au lait and then some skin gets to be black, because that’s MY choice. No one has the right to determine that I’m not black. Never. Not ever.

I will say it again, but I don't think your narrow mind will get it. Christianity has a fair number of skeletons in the closet. Due to the renessiance, and a fair bit of growth over the last few hundred years, we have arrived at a pretty decent spot.
I did also say, though you chose to gloss over it that Moderate Islam does at least quitely support the radicals in their midst, and they Moderates, as a group need to take charge. I have talked with many muslims who live in the US, and have found thier beliefs as far as religious freedom, and such tend to mirror thier Christian neighbors.

or the thousands of SECULAR individuals that have been arrested for doing child ponography.
Idiot, you do know that an independent study has shown that less than 2% of priests have ever molested a child, while over 15% of the SECULAR population has molested a child, right?
you do know that there have been lawyers, judges, policemen, teachers, and many other members of the SECULAR world, much more than priests have been invovled in child molestation and ponography.
You are quite the imbecile Juan C, how easily the media uses imbeciles and poorly educated fools like you.

Thats it. That sums his ministry up in a nutshell.
That is historical fact, and if you doubt me, I suggest you read the 4 gospels again, and then start on Farrar.
June 26th, 2007 at 6:06 pmI have a giant, refrigerator sized diamond in my backyard. I've never seen it, but I believe it is there. My family and I go digging in the back yard for it every Sunday.
The other day my neighbor asked me why we were digging in the yard. I explained it to him. He looked at me rather strangely as though I was crazy for believeing such a thing. I told him that this diamond gave my life meaning. I told him that it brought my family together in a very important way. In fact, I told him that I didn't want to imagine a universe where there wasn't a refrigerator sized diamond in my backyard. He laughed and walked away.
Later that day he came home from church and told this crazy story about eating the flesh, and drinking the blood, of some guy that lived 2000 years ago. I looked at him like he was nuts and walked away.

Jesus did condemn adultry, anyone that is a Christian and knows their Bible knows this.
let us also not forget that the women that was brought before Jesus by the hypocritical Pharisees was an adulterer who the Pharisees wanted to stone. As we all know Jesus said to the hypocrites, "he amongst you who has not sin throw the first stone." they all left. Then Jesus turn to the woman, the adulterer and told her, "go and SIN NO MORE."
Obviously Jesus showed that adultery is a sin, and that judging others is also a sin.

they were not Christians, if they were, I ask you, why did they go after Catholics and any and all Christians? priests, nuns, etc were murdered, arrested, taken to concentration camps, gased just like the Jews.
I would urge you to open up a book and get an education, my poor ignorant fool.
June 26th, 2007 at 6:31 pmBartlebee, you are an a poor ignorant fool. Jesus did talk about the Laws of Moses a great deal. He also talked about the 10 Commandment and the two new commandments.

I was merely pointing out the hypocrisy of another neocon, Ted Haggard, who devoted his entire ministry to rooting out and condemning homosexuality, only to get busted buying sex from a homosexual prostitute.

As for the education, have you read Mein Kampf? I have.

And I can tell you you don't have a clue what you're talking about. You've spent your time googling focus sights and never bothered to hear what Hitler really had to say. He condemned homosexuality, advocated monogomy and regular church attendence, and condemned pre marital sex.
If you had bothered to read his words, you'd know that.
But since you didn't, you don't.

The first person who can point to a single post on this or any other site where I claim to be a Christian gets a dollar.
OFF TOPIC: I swear ... TP has the most generous moderators in the history of the world, because Conservatron has violated at least two provisions in the Terms of Use agreement.
Violated.
Violated.
Again, why TP allows this guy to post is beyond me.
The SGT, on the other hand, seems like a reasonable person -- he disagrees, but brings up good points. After all, we don't want an echo chamber, just intelligent debate.
.
June 26th, 2007 at 6:49 pmI'd also note that BARTLEBEE has also violated the ToU in this thread -- although he doesn't do it in every ... single ... post ... the way Conservatron does.
Again, if someone from the right has a valid point, fine. But the trolling has got to stop, TP. Your site is being ruined by them.

I think, Daryll, the important thing is to know that Jesus did not speak literally. He spoke in riddles, parables, and through poetic metaphors. His comments on adultery are paradoxical. And it's your interpretation that tries to regain the upperhand of the Pharisees, who were legalists.
I would like to return to what this threat is really about: The smear of Obama, the UCC, and progressive liberals of faith everywhere. That's the real sin. And you Daryll and Valiant Venus are participating in this stoning of Obama.
I'd like to post a link here to a speech Obama gave some time ago. It's introduced by liberal Rabbi Lerner: Barack Obama on Religiophobia. It's time we talked about the real question: Why the Far Right and the Far Left are afraid of People with Faith. The Left think it's corny and obsolete and the Right can't stand faith that is Living, they prefer it dead and stuffed.

June 27th, 2007 at 1:45 amJohn Edwards has to have his wife stand up to mean old Ann Coulter. What a complete wuss.
June 27th, 2007 at 3:45 amOh ... I know blasting a troll can be good for the soul and all. Been there, done that.
:-)
But my point is that by feeding the trolls, we perpetuate their postings. If we ignored them, they'd probably go back under their bridges.
Which reminds me of an idea I had: A site dedicated to exposing right wing trolls on liberal sites called "Back Under the Bridge."
If I had more time I'd love to do it. Maybe someone else could.
Oh ... and before any wingnut says they could do the same, they couldn't -- most rightie sites don't allow comments, and those that do delete any post that doesn't typographically fellate the site owner.
Anyway ... that's all I got. Have a great day everyone (except the trolls, natch).

June 27th, 2007 at 9:56 amA black seperatist agenda, right. And these white extreme right conservatives who promote taxcuts for the wealthy after they've enslaved the black man for decades just want nothing else but good for everyone. I don't think so. the vested interests and powers in America are white, and these people have a race-based agenda too. These people are in the damned 'white' house. These people want nothing else but to own a company, steal money from ordinary citizens and keep the black man working for no pay. They say immigration should be illegal but they themselves came into this country carrying guns and killing all the native Americans. Double standards is all these white people have, that's why their children grow up to be such retards, voting for idiot presidents and not caring when their cousins in war come home dead.
June 27th, 2007 at 10:28 amBut my point is that by feeding the trolls, we perpetuate their postings.
Comment by Unholy Moses — June 27, 2007 @ 9:28 am
So?
Whats the alternative? Ignore them like wimps and hope they won't pick on us? We tried that routine before, and its why we're where we are today. The reason the left loses elections and the reason the right is respected by so many as the tougher party, is because half the people on the left are busy telling the other half not to engage the right.
Well I can take care of myself pal. And this ain't Romper Room and you're not Miss Sally. And if it were, I still wouldn't listen to you.
That "Lets ignore the trolls" bullshit is what has painted the left wing as the wimps in the eyes of the general population, and its why we lose elections, and its why people don't trust us to be strong on security.
So you keep playing Miss Sally there, and telling everyone to not stand up for themselves. You keep tyring to play mommy to the left wing, telling them to "play nice" and "ignore the right wing", and keep handing them the victory before we get out of the race.
But in case you didn't notice, a brave woman named Elizibeth Edwards didn't ignore the biggest troll in the world yesterday, and called in and took Ann Coulter on in front of the entire world. She didn't try to "play nice", and she didn't "ignore" Ann Coulter, the ultimate troll.
She butted heads with her head on, and in doing so, actually persuaded some in the audience who were cheering for Coulter to cheer her instead.
We don't need any more kindergarten teachers.
We don't need any more social workers or mediators.
We need people who are willing to meet the right wing head on, and beat them at their own game.
We've got more of the other kind, than we need.
June 27th, 2007 at 11:02 amIf we can't meet the wimpy trolls in here and take them on, how the hell can we debate them or take them on in larger venues?
Consider this the Dugway proving grounds, and consider BARTLEBEE, a bunker buster.
We need more bunker busters.
Calling all bunker busters.
June 27th, 2007 at 11:07 amBARTLEBEE--
First of all, I never told you what to do. I made a simple request. Methinks you're a tad insecure.
Second of all, if you think that hurling insults back and forth with people who have no desire whatsoever for serious debate is a good idea, that's your choice. It's a stupid choice, since you might as well just scream at a wall -- you'd probably get better results.
Thirdly, Elizabeth Edwards didn't insult Coulter. She addressed her calmly, intelligently, and with facts on her side. In other words, the exact opposite of what you're doing here.
And fourth and last, there's nothing wrong with pointing out errors in logic and reasoning with the right, nor is there a problem with addressing their falsehoods. But if you think that becoming the left-leaning version of Coulter or Conservatron is the answer, then you're a hypocrite. Again, if that's your choice, fine. But don't get your panties in a bunch when someone calls you out on it.
.
June 27th, 2007 at 11:38 amOh, one other thing -- if you want to place Elizabeth Edwards on a pedestal for standing up to Coulter (as you rightfully should, BTW), you may want to take her advice:
Or ignore it. Whatever.
.
June 27th, 2007 at 11:41 amOh, and one other thing. Edwards was talking about the personal attacks on her husband and others, that were NOT part of an exchange or debate of issues or substance.
Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Keith Olberman, Bill Maher, ALL mix insults and such in their attacks on the right wing.
Should they just shut up too?
Should they learn to "play nice" too?
June 27th, 2007 at 11:59 amHey I know.
Maybe if we all just hold hands and sing kumbiya and hand out peace lilly's, the mean, ignorant low lifes who have stolen our country and bastardized our democracy, and butchered hundreds of thousands of people in Iraq, wiill just say they're sorry, and quit.
Maybe if we ignore them, they'll just go away, huh?
June 27th, 2007 at 12:06 pmI'm not sure who's side you're really on. I have often considered the very real likleyhood that the right wing sends in posers pretending to be liberal in order to try to get the liberals to try to not engage them, and to try to convince us to "play nice", while they continue to make verbal mince meat out of us.
Whether thats you or not, I do not know. But if its not, could I possibly persuade you to join the right wing? After all, you'd do us so much more good on their side, then you're doing on ours. Just go over to their side and tell them what you've been telling us. Sow discord in their ranks. Everytime one of them descimates one of us in verbal confrontation, you just wag your finger at them and say "shame shame shame, now play nice".
That oughta work.
June 27th, 2007 at 12:38 pmOH NOES!! SOMEONE DISAGREED WITH ME!! HE'S TEH ENEMY!!
Sheesh.
You know, I have yet to see a single troll on here make "verbal mincemeat" of anyone. Simply posting insults that have no basis in reality doesn't qualify.
Because stooping to their level has worked so amazingly well, huh?
Show me one single troll who has ever decimated anyone on this board. All I see are people who have no interest in anything but hurling insults.
You know, if you need to go around online believing that whomever shouts loudest is the winner, then fine. Go ahead.
But don't act like a toddler in need of nap when someone points out that lowering yourself to the level of Conservatron just makes you the opposite side of the same coin -- a hateful, vitriolic individual obviously incapable of making a reasoned argument.
And that's the point -- one can confront the rightwing and their lies without lowering themselves to their level. All it takes is some intelligence and a bit of effort You seem to have the intelligence -- guess you're just lazy.
I realize I'm wasting my time with you, but thought I'd give it a shot. I dunno ... maybe I should just tell you to go f*** yourself since that seems to be the only level of discourse you seem to understand.

Moe on the 3 Stooges called people lamebrains, and it was funny. I'm with Bartlebee on this one. Liberal crybabys in here just want to bitch and moan about everyone being nice and talking nice. Meanwhile they insult too, just in their sissy way. I prefer someone who is honest and just calls it like it is, and talks like a regular person, not some tightass kiddygarten teacher.

SLOWLY BACKS INTO THE THREAD
Wow. Just … wow.
Maybe you should try decaf.

Sure slick, sure.
Of course, maybe you should try not writing a check with your mouth that your keyboard can't cash.
June 27th, 2007 at 3:21 pmSince my other post was deleted by TP (I guess others can post insults that contain f-bombs, but not me).
Coming this summer ...
BARTLEBEE: THREAD NAZI
Watch as he decides when a person can post!
Marvel at the way he insults anyone who may agree with him politically, but disagrees with some of the things he does!
And soak up the joy of him acting like a tough guy from behind his keyboard!

Man, you sure "BACK OUT OF THE THREAD SLOWLY" real slow, huh chief?
As opposed to acting like a wimp, behind yours?
A wimp that is, who got his ass handed to him under his former handle, so he changed it.
June 27th, 2007 at 4:08 pmOr didn't you think I'd notice?
June 27th, 2007 at 4:10 pmAnd by the way, Mark the Dick, I never told a person that they can't post, or what to post.
You however, as yourself and your altar ego, have been telling me what to say since you opened that big fat mouth of yours.
Get your accusations straight, dick.
June 27th, 2007 at 4:14 pmHuh?
June 27th, 2007 at 4:16 pmYea, "huh"?
June 27th, 2007 at 4:18 pmUm ... whaaaaa?
I really have no idea what the hell you are typing about. Really.
June 27th, 2007 at 4:18 pmLook dickhead, I've wasted enough time on you in here. Or didn't you notice this thread has been dead for a while, and its just you, and me in here, as it has been all morning?
If you want me, then come find me in the other threads, "dick".
I'll be at your service.
June 27th, 2007 at 4:19 pmI'll leave you with this.
ANN COULTER is a dirty lying media whore.
And she looks like the northbound end of a southbound mule.
June 27th, 2007 at 4:20 pm"Look dickhead, I’ve wasted enough time on you in here. Or didn’t you notice this thread has been dead for a while, and its just you, and me in here, as it has been all morning?"
I only entered this thread on my lunch break. Tried to make a few funnies, only to be blasted. I think you have me confused with someone else.
"I’ll be at your service."
I am sure you service lots and lots of people (NTTATWWT).
And I'll leave you this:
You need help. Professional, if possible.
June 27th, 2007 at 4:24 pmLook dickhead, I’ve wasted enough time on you in here. Or didn’t you notice this thread has been dead for a while, and its just you, and me in here, as it has been all morning?
If you want me, then come find me in the other threads, “dickâ€.
I’ll be at your service. And I'll mop your ass up there just as I did in here, you gutless punk.
June 27th, 2007 at 4:41 pmThats it. I've taken enough off you punk. I'd like to kick your butt you stupid litlte WIMP!!!!!
I HATE YOU!!!!
AND I HATE YOU ALL!!!!!!
June 27th, 2007 at 4:45 pmHow DARE you talk about Ann Coulter that way?
She's a goddess, and I worship her buttcheeks, and you would too if you were just half a man.
June 27th, 2007 at 4:46 pmNow I have to go. My lunchbreak is over and I have to go, but you'd better not be here when I get back!
June 27th, 2007 at 4:47 pmFYI--446 and 447 were not posted by me (and I think 445 wasn't Bartlebee).
June 27th, 2007 at 4:48 pm448 was not me either.
June 27th, 2007 at 4:49 pmHey, I didn't make any of those posts. Someones impersonating me.
But I will say this Bart. You need help. I just came in here on my lunch break to talk with people, and you attacked me so I am leaving.
You need professional help pal.
June 27th, 2007 at 4:49 pmThat was not me.
June 27th, 2007 at 4:50 pm451 was me. Sorry Mark, it's just that after having my ass handed to me today, I'm wrongly taking it out on you.
Apologies.
June 27th, 2007 at 4:59 pmThis thread has turned into a complete f***ing mess.
Funny at times, but a mess.
June 27th, 2007 at 5:01 pmJust like my shorts.
June 27th, 2007 at 5:07 pm"Just like my shorts.
Comment NOT by Mark D"
Holy crap (pun most definitely intended).
Now THAT was funny!!
ROFL!
June 27th, 2007 at 5:35 pmWhat bearing do you think this has on what I wrote.
Do you see an upside to Edwards' political career ending but his wife's independence being defended ?
Bothered to think which one of these counts for something have you ?
June 27th, 2007 at 8:58 pmThe irony never stops.
June 27th, 2007 at 9:08 pmGot any examples of Bill Maher's work there have you ?
Maybe something that has been recently referred to by a white blonde named Ann and attributed to her instead of Bill ?
TRAN Coulter, don't TRANsport your bony TRANsplanted self in front of my bumper or you'll wind up in my TRANsmission you TRANsparent TRANny!
