CNN covers CNN covering Paris Hilton.

CNN covers CNN covering Paris Hilton.»

“Talk about milking the story,” HuffPost’s Rachel Sklar writes. “CNN covered Paris Hilton arriving at CNN studios for her interview with Larry King.”

Wolf Blitzer cut his interview with Bill Cosby about inner city poverty to throw over to Carol Costello who was ‘watching another story’ — the story being the live shot of Paris Hilton getting out of her car.

As Costello voice-overed (”Paris Hilton is just arriving at the CNN studios…She’s arriving for an exclusive interview with our own Larry King”), the chyron similarly announced that “Paris Hilton Arrives For Post-Jail Interview With CNN’s Larry King” (a glorious event which was apparently “Happening Now”). How many “The Most Trusted Name In News” jokes can you make before it just makes you sad?

    Any shots of the Beav?

  4. Katie Says:

I can’t help but thing that those poor news people are so embarrassed when they have to do something like that. I know that poor Keith Olberman looks like he is having a root canal every time he reports on Paris Hilton. You know he doesn’t want to do it but has been ordered to by his bosses.

Do they realize how shallow and foolish this makes them look. Do they really think that nonstop Paris reporting is going to help their ratings?

  5. Kevin Says:

Fox news is better than CNN anyday.

Just stop already! If anyone wants to “know” anything about PH, let them dish out the cash for a tabloid magazine, take it home, and read it in the comfort of their basement. Just leave the rest of us PH-negative.

And TP covers CNN covering CNN covering Paris Hilton.

    This should piss off TP:

  9. Robert M. Says:

Remind me, please, why should I be interested in this story?

No, nevermind. I don’t what to know anything about private citizens.

Tell me something about dick cheney being arrested by federal marshals for violating national security directives and preventing federal officers from conducting their mandated duties to secure our national secrets.

  15. Candyce Says:

What they should be covering is Lott and his pals blocking every single piece of legislation brought forward by Reid. Reid was just forced to move to cloture the Defense Reauthorization Bill - you know, the one that pays the troops’ salaries, training, equipment - because the Republicans hate our troops and don’t want to vote on it.

Prior to this, Lott objected to the Bill implementing the 9-11 commission recommendations, even though the only tangle in the Bill was a labor issue which the Democrats agreed to remove. So apparently the pukes also hate America and are willing to put politics before our security.

The pukes have discovered the magic of cloture, and as TP noted below, Lott acknowledged, “The strategy of being obstructionist can work or fail… so far it’s working for us.”

Chinese tires are missing critical components that would result in tread separation, after two people in Alabama were killed by them.

As usual, even the ‘progressives’ who haunt TP miss the point. Are we in agreement that the way the main stream media reports the ‘news’ is one of the biggest problems we have today?

    Or Wally, for that matter?

  22. FunMe Says:

    Comment by Namtillaku

Some of us understand what’s wrong here, Namtillaku, we’re just numb from overload, which is probably the point. The whole F*#kin’ country seems to be headed for a nasty crack-up. Me personally? I’m scared sh*tless.

  24. Fed the Fcuk Up! Says:

    #19,

First off, it’s not “mainstream media” it’s “Corporate Media”. Things will begin to make more sense when you gain that clarity.

Secondly, are you implying that TP is an unbiased, balanced, and intelligent news source? Most certainly not. But they are “okay” because they report with your team’s slant?

Take a look at my quick analysis done in the previous diary.

I hear ya. It’s just seeing the folks who are on our side excoriating TP for doing the lord’s work bothers me.

  29. Fed the Fcuk Up! Says:

    #27,

Though I have clashed with you often before, I have to congratulate you on that comment, it captured the absurdity perfectly.

And it was funny to boot.

Thank God the Repubs want to cut Estate Taxes so we can have lots of Paris Hiltons running around making a better world!

  34. realitythink Says:

Of course the story they should be covering is scrolling underneath all the nonsense. Hopefully the ratings will be low for this, but I don’t it. Americans love this crap!! So sad.

  35. Willy Says:

    BREAKING NEWS!!!

Paris Hilton took a dump during the last commercial break!!

  36. Jeannie See Says:

While I can understand the liberal blogs trying to call out the stupidity of the MSM caring more about the carrying ons of Paris Hilton and Ann Coulter than they do about the current state of affairs, I swear, if I see one more posting of this type, I will not donate one more dollar to their blogs. Not one more.

  37. Jackie Says:

Americans look at Paris as the youth rule model for all young girls to be like. Now let’s see what happens when a normal girl does the same thing. Will she get the media coverage and the special treatment by the jail?

  38. Yellowsubmarine Says:

    I would cover her alright.

  39. Yellowsubmarine Says:

Actually its now real cool for young girls to go to jail, look at the attention Paris is getting for it.

  40. jesse Says:

i was disappointed to see that tp posted this story. ‘the media’ - including news/entertainment (hard to tell the difference eh?) blogs like tp - create our news stories by choosing which stories to cover or ignore.

what would be best - and in fact what i feel tp generally argues for - is for the media - cnn and tp alike - to ignore ms. hilton. there is no story here. let us stop behaving like there is.

  41. willyloman Says:

Did I hear correctly, that she had found God…during her 25 day stint in PC?
    She breaks quick.
You could waterboard her with a tissue and an eye dropper.

  42. tarazan Says:

While CNN spent most of the day talking about Paris Hilton, MSNBC countered by spending most of the day talking about Ann Coulter.

While this country has bigger issues from wars to health to the economy, the major networks are fighting over ‘fluff’ shows.

  43. Jill Sidley Says:

Until people stop watching CNN or at least complain to them, this will continue. I wrote them today complaining and letting them know I watch less and less of CNN as this policy continues.

  44. Jay Randal Says:

I do not care about Paris Hilton > PERIOD.

  45. bill Says:

thinkprogress also appears to be covering paris hilton.

  46. RUCerious Says:

So why is TP dragging itself through her muck?

  47. bill Says:

in any case, do some anthropological research, and 8 out of 10 americans will watch paris hilton-related news coverage over, say, political news coverage. i’m one of those 8.

if i want to follow politics, i’ll visit this web site. but if i just off of work, and i come home, sit down and drink a beer, i’m gonna watch paris every day of the week, and not dry, political news coverage. period.

our collective fears, nightmares, dreams, etc, etc, are much more entwined in paris’s narrative than any day-to-day political bullshit. if anything, watching the bush administration is every bit as relevant as watching paris hilton.

  48. jesse Says:

    nice participant-observation bill.

but surely you wouldn’t argue that cnn should cover paris hilton as news?

as entertainment? - yeah, sure. and we have many tv channels (just to mention one medium) that are dedicated to covering entertainment items. so let them cover ms. hilton. not our news sources.

perhaps it is an issue of standards really - the american appetite for voyerism dragging down our news standards as the profit-driven shareholders/owners orient their news rooms away from politics and toward personally satisfying entertainment.

it is us - the public - who suffer. even unknowningly.

  49. cajay Says:

    I am finished with CNN.

  50. The republic of Stupidity Says:

    Comment by tarazan

Now, if we could only get Paris and Anne to wrestle topless in a vat of lime jello… talk about ratings!!!!

  51. ann Says:

    Et, tu, Anderson? Disappointed.

  52. martin Says:

Okay TP, we get it. You like writing about Paris as much as CNN likes filming her.

    PLEASE get over it.

  53. bill Says:

watching paris and anna nicole wrestle in lime jello, topless, would be simply extraordinary and you know it. a ton of cash would change hands, and millions, perhaps billions, would be satisfied in one way or another. nobody gets hurt.

jesse, in response to your commentary: it is only relevant if one assumes that CNN, a private company, has a responsibility to inform people OR tell the truth. or, if one assumes that people believe that they are either being informed OR being told the truth.

anyone, and i mean anyone, who disagrees with the above statement is living in some sort of fantasy world. the “free” market is nothing more than a reflection of our collective values, dreams, fantasies, fears and nightmares. no other totalizing system quite exceeds the exuberance of capitalism.

this is not to say that there are not other antagonizing systems at work. it’s just to say that criticizing CNN is not without merit when we consider the larger system of forces at work (capitalism, and our support of it).

  54. bill Says:

if you really hate CNN, then simply ignore it. if you believe that it shouldn’t exist, then you are a fascist.

  55. Happy Guy Says:

Another top story by ThinkProgress, Err, I maen CNN.

    ROTFL

This site is just as guilty as they are. How many Paris stories is that now?

    ROTFL

  56. Hedley Lamarr Says:

Could all this publicity be a kind of proxy effort to show her sex video? Else, I can’t see why they do it.

  57. Proud American Liberal Says:

This just in! Anna Nicole Smith is still dead!

  58. tarazan Says:

This morning MSNBC criticising CNN about giving big time to Paris Hilton story on today’s morning Joe Scarborough, but Joe kept talking about Ann Coulter, then went talking to her also on the phone.

The story of Ann Coulter took over MSNBC news….
It is laughable that Joe was criticising CNN and Paris story….the two networks plus Fox network are all selling entertainments in the name of news all day long.
I don’t know why these stations and shows like Chris Mathews HARDBALL invites Ann Coulter and give her the time.

  59. Sniperr Says:

Does this actually still surprise anyone? Responsible MSM reporting in the U.S. has gone AWOL in favor of the bottom line (or whatever the corporations/repugs deem newsworthy). Corporate growth/profit is all that really counts anymore - never mind that the press has a vital function in a democracy….watch democracy and meaningful debate fall by the wayside. Most people prefer a 30 second sound bite anyways. At least there are still some places to get real news about real issues in big media… BBC for example.

  60. rockyroad Says:

    Shut up. Ick.

Journalists have standards. If you’re covering this . . . you are a hack, not a journalist.

Why am I here? Because I aspire to be a journalist and you need to know how badly you suck.

  61. Brian Spence Says:

    Actually, it’s more like:

TP covers HuffPo covering CNN covering CNN covering Paris Hilton who was in some crappy movie with Kevin Bacon

  62. blogbob Says:

Paris for President (when she turns 35)!

    She’d be smarter than Chimpy!

I just love all this Paris and Anna Nicole and Lindsay and dead pregnant lady coverage. Keeps us from having to realize that our Prez is a jerk and being manipulated by Darth Vader Cheney himself.

  63. muck Says:

Just one more reason I turned off my cable over a year ago.

    I miss it…..like a pandemic.

  64. rainlillie Says:

Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, and Nicole Ritchie can save the world!
These three…Amazing human beings who have contributed so much to our society( They must have just look at the 24 hour coverage they get) Can travel to locations that the media has so far ignored and shed light on the problems in those regions.

Paris being the selfless , modest person that she is, would do anything to bring attention to the fact that American soldiers, and innocent civilians are being killed every day in a civil war in Iraq. Suppose for a moment that she hopped on a plane and went over there.. The media would follow her like a pack of wolves on the hunt.

Nicole knows what its like to have missed a few meals, therefore she should be able to relate to the starving people in Darfur. She could go over there and bring attention to a genocide that has been going on for years. Women and girls are raped on a daily basis and children are being used in the army of militias. Villages are burned and destroyed and there are millions of orphans. If she took time out of her busy schedule ( getting her nails done, shopping) the media would pay attention and follow her to Darfur. The world would began to see how horrific the conditions are there.

Lindsey could move to New Orleans and show the world that just because the cameras and Anderson Cooper have gone away, the people there are still trying to recover. ” Reports of suicides, strokes and stress-related deaths are tremendously high. They see it in the police calls for fights and domestic violence. They see it in the long waiting lists for psychiatric care that they have no way to provide.. About half of the city’s 450,000 pre-Katrina residents have yet to return,”

My guess is if word got out that Lindsey was going to move into one of the trailers provided by FEMA, the media would stake the trailer park out. They would follow Lindsey through the garbage filled streets and abandoned homes.

Perhaps they’ll have an epiphany and realize, that they’ve wasted so much time covering people who don’t deserve it. Maybe..just maybe they’ll take notice of the suffering in Darfur, the American soldiers dying in a civil war or the American citizens who are still suffering in New Orleans.. One can only hope that the media finds it’s soul.

  65. Carolyn P Says:

Geesh…Nero Fiddles while Rome Burns. Who gives a Flying you know what about Paris Hilton. Are you a news organization or Entertainment Tonite? How about doing indept invesgation reporting on how this Administration is cheating us blind and preparing us for their North American Union….Bush and Cheny are the real story and both need to go—George is an idiot but Dick is just evil…Cheney needs to go then we can send dubya back to the jungle.

Not a chance. Ever hear the song ‘Dirty Laundry’ by Don Henley? That’s exactly what the MSM is. If it bleeds (or appears in a sex vieo released by the boyfriend, or marries an 80-yo billionare who dies shortly thereafter), it leads.

Don’t ever expect the MSM to have any epiphany. Too busy poofing their hair, getting collagen injections, and thinking up new stage names like ‘Stone’ to capture our interest.
