Perhaps they’ll have an epiphany and realize, that they’ve wasted so much time covering people who don’t deserve it. Maybe..just maybe they’ll take notice of the suffering in Darfur, the American soldiers dying in a civil war or the American citizens who are still suffering in New Orleans.. One can only hope that the media finds it’s soul.

Not a chance. Ever hear the song 'Dirty Laundry' by Don Henley? That's exactly what the MSM is. If it bleeds (or appears in a sex vieo released by the boyfriend, or marries an 80-yo billionare who dies shortly thereafter), it leads.

Don't ever expect the MSM to have any epiphany. Too busy poofing their hair, getting collagen injections, and thinking up new stage names like 'Stone' to capture our interest.

Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, and Nicole Ritchie can save the world!
These three...Amazing human beings who have contributed so much to our society( They must have just look at the 24 hour coverage they get) Can travel to locations that the media has so far ignored and shed light on the problems in those regions.

Paris being the selfless , modest person that she is, would do anything to bring attention to the fact that American soldiers, and innocent civilians are being killed every day in a civil war in Iraq. Suppose for a moment that she hopped on a plane and went over there.. The media would follow her like a pack of wolves on the hunt.

Nicole knows what its like to have missed a few meals, therefore she should be able to relate to the starving people in Darfur. She could go over there and bring attention to a genocide that has been going on for years. Women and girls are raped on a daily basis and children are being used in the army of militias. Villages are burned and destroyed and there are millions of orphans. If she took time out of her busy schedule ( getting her nails done, shopping) the media would pay attention and follow her to Darfur. The world would began to see how horrific the conditions are there.

Lindsey could move to New Orleans and show the world that just because the cameras and Anderson Cooper have gone away, the people there are still trying to recover. " Reports of suicides, strokes and stress-related deaths are tremendously high. They see it in the police calls for fights and domestic violence. They see it in the long waiting lists for psychiatric care that they have no way to provide.. About half of the city's 450,000 pre-Katrina residents have yet to return,"

My guess is if word got out that Lindsey was going to move into one of the trailers provided by FEMA, the media would stake the trailer park out. They would follow Lindsey through the garbage filled streets and abandoned homes.

Perhaps they'll have an epiphany and realize, that they've wasted so much time covering people who don't deserve it.
Paris for President (when she turns 35)!

She'd be smarter than Chimpy!

I just love all this Paris and Anna Nicole and Lindsay and dead pregnant lady coverage. Keeps us from having to realize that our Prez is a jerk and being manipulated by Darth Vader Cheney himself.

Shut up. Ick.

Journalists have standards. If you're covering this . . . you are a hack, not a journalist.

Why am I here? Because I aspire to be a journalist and you need to know how badly you suck.

Does this actually still surprise anyone? Responsible MSM reporting in the U.S. has gone AWOL in favor of the bottom line (or whatever the corporations/repugs deem newsworthy). Corporate growth/profit is all that really counts anymore - never mind that the press has a vital function in a democracy....watch democracy and meaningful debate fall by the wayside. Most people prefer a 30 second sound bite anyways. At least there are still some places to get real news about real issues in big media... BBC for example.

This morning MSNBC criticising CNN about giving big time to Paris Hilton story on today's morning Joe Scarborough, but Joe kept talking about Ann Coulter, then went talking to her also on the phone.

The story of Ann Coulter took over MSNBC news....
It is laughable that Joe was criticising CNN and Paris story....the two networks plus Fox network are all selling entertainments in the name of news all day long.
I don't know why these stations and shows like Chris Mathews HARDBALL invites Ann Coulter and give her the time.

watching paris and anna nicole wrestle in lime jello, topless, would be simply extraordinary and you know it. a ton of cash would change hands, and millions, perhaps billions, would be satisfied in one way or another. nobody gets hurt.

jesse, in response to your commentary: it is only relevant if one assumes that CNN, a private company, has a responsibility to inform people OR tell the truth. or, if one assumes that people believe that they are either being informed OR being told the truth.

anyone, and i mean anyone, who disagrees with the above statement is living in some sort of fantasy world. the "free" market is nothing more than a reflection of our collective values, dreams, fantasies, fears and nightmares. no other totalizing system quite exceeds the exuberance of capitalism.

this is not to say that there are not other antagonizing systems at work. it's just to say that criticizing CNN is not without merit when we consider the larger system of forces at work (capitalism, and our support of it).

jesse, in response to your commentary: it is only relevant if one assumes that CNN, a private company, has a responsibility to inform people OR tell the truth. or, if one assumes that people believe that they are either being informed OR being told the truth.

Okay TP, we get it. You like writing about Paris as much as CNN likes filming her.

PLEASE get over it.

While this country has bigger issues from wars to health to the economy, the major networks are fighting over ‘fluff’ shows.

Now, if we could only get Paris and Anne to wrestle topless in a vat of lime jello... talk about ratings!!!!

nice participant-observation bill.

but surely you wouldn't argue that cnn should cover paris hilton as news?

as entertainment? - yeah, sure. and we have many tv channels (just to mention one medium) that are dedicated to covering entertainment items. so let them cover ms. hilton. not our news sources.

perhaps it is an issue of standards really - the american appetite for voyerism dragging down our news standards as the profit-driven shareholders/owners orient their news rooms away from politics and toward personally satisfying entertainment.

it is us - the public - who suffer. even unknowningly.
