Byzantio had a loose control of Spain, at best. They had a small province, and the Franks were independent. Check your facts.

So many mistakes in so few (and void) words… if you’re so proud of your Hispanic inheritance, learn to spell Spanish. If not, you’re simply shaming us all (the ones that read and write Spanish)!

Alito and Roberts both LIED in their confirmation hearings. Scalia wants to be Pope of America. Thomas acts like a grand wizard. Kennedy is spineless. And now it is quite apparent that they are all good, Catholic racists, like some of the good, Catholic racists in my own family.

Let me get this straight; the US is plagued by issues of race, so the best means of dealing with it among youth is to further segregate them from one another, which will lead to school populations made up of racial neighborhoods; rich neighborhood schools will prosper, while poor neighborhood schools will struggle.

Sounds a lot like Segregation to me.

being a graduate of the jefferson county (ky) public school system (mayme s. waggener trad 2002) i think i could provide a unique perspective on this issue, especially one without the hateful invective being spewed by both wings of the social spectrum.

personally, i’m torn by this issue. i for one think that our bussing system was a good thing. louisville is pretty divided racially and economically- the blacks in the west end, the poorer people in the south end and the well off in the east end. fortunately for me, i was taught in the traditional program and that allowed me to attend the traditional schools that were closest to me, so i didn’t experience bussing first hand. but i will tell you this, it was most definitely beneficial for both races and both economic groups to come together in a common ground. it can’t not be a bad thing to get to know someone who looks different from you. i know it benefitted me because all the traditional schools i went to had kids of different economic and social backgrounds. i personally think that the brighter kids will always seek out those who are different than they are so that they learn life experiences that can’t be taught in the classroom.

however, i also think that using race as a basis of placing students is wrong, especially in the case of what happened here (which is something that i am more familiar with). i think that if there is room for a student in the local school, the percentage of a racial group should be irrelevant; the student should be left in.

so like i said, i am of a very mixed opinion here. had i been a justice today, i don’t know how i would have voted. i probably would have voted with the minority because i recognize its practical value, however i would have disagreed with the minority opinion somewhat. i basically agree with what was written by the minority, but i would have stated that in cases where there is room for a student that the racially mandated percentages should be thrown out.

Maybe it’s time to try something else, like school vouchers. Let the parents pick the school that they believe is a “best fit” for their kids.

I mean that the housing patterns were such that the best way to integrate schools was to have children go to the schools nearest their homes.

That’s what confused me a bit, because normally, students going to the schools near their home usually results in most blacks going to majority black schools and vice-versa.

The battle cry from most white conservatives in town was “tradition”, meaning that they wanted to continue the practice of having white kids bussed past the “black” schools to go to the “white” schools, even if the “black” school was around the corner.

I frankly would like to see a system that offered at least a few options, so children aren’t forced into schools that their parents don’t believe is best for them. Whether it be vouchers, if NCLB is the answer, or whatever, I think it’s disgraceful that the government can essentially imprison kids in schools and tell them “tough sh-t, you’re stuck.”

I have no Anglo blood according to a trace through 17 generations.

I live in a seaside house in Florida on a 1.5 acre lot, elevation 15 feet above high tide.

I did have a BMW and a Mercedes, but traded them in for a Prius and a Honda Civic hybrid. Both are loaded o the tune of 30 – 35 grand. Both sip gas.

I am not the least bit prejudiced, unless you bring in the issue of stupidity, of which you are an expert at.

My IQ is above 186 according to my last test (7 months ago).

I had a fairly successful career. I am a multi-millionaire and retired at 62 because I thought that I should give the young guys and gals a chance at the trough.

You know, I have to say that I’m not really all that put out by this decision, even though I know where it comes from. I think it presents an opportunity for blacks to administer the education of their children on their own terms.

I’m not taking the bait:). But you could at least put forth an actual answer to the questions. What do we do if or when the question is not school integration, but integration in public accommodations? If a conservative like you is saying that I’m irrational and insane to suggest that segregation in public accommodations could ever happen (again) because you find the idea horribly unthinkable, then that’s wonderful. It means that liberalism won.

The reason I didn’t answer it, and thought it was a fake, is because the premise is absurd. (”TP” is shorthand for this site, and is used to reference the user community at large.) If you want to view that as a success of the civil rights era, I’m inclined to agree. But while you’re patting yourself on the back, remember that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed because of Republicans, not Democrats.

You ignored the other question I asked. What do you think happened in my hometown when school integration was implemented based on actual neighborhood schools? Care to hazard a guess?

Well, I don’t know your hometown, but I’m well aware that the reaction in some places (ie, Boston) was far more contentious than it in other places. And since I’m not positive what you mean by “integration based on actual neighborhood schools,”pls tell me what happened.

You’re kids wont have to go to school with any “minorities”, if your lucky. Just keep the blinders on and pretend the REAL WORLD doesn’t exist…
