MSNBC anchor refuses to report on Paris.

By Faiz Shakir on Jun 28th, 2007 at 8:40 pm

MSNBC anchor refuses to report on Paris.»

MSNBC anchor Mika Brzezinski repeatedly refused to report on the Paris Hilton story yesterday morning. At one point, she even attempted to burn her cue cards. An emotional Brzezinski proclaimed, “I’m not doing it. I’m not doing the story.” At which point, host Joe Scarborough called for MSNBC to show video footage of Hilton. Watch it:

I’m feeling the love for Mika Brzezinski. Maybe a little showboating there, but she not only has bigger stones than either of the males on the set she has the makings of an actual journalist — which, of course, is what they’re making fun of. Two asshats and one attractive serious woman.

    Dude, that was staged.

  4. Dan Says:

Mika gets points from me. People are dying in Iraq and MSNBC, CNN, and FOX are all about Paris Hilton.

Yeah, the MSM has it’s priorities right in this country of ours. They have no shame.

  5. PRIMVS INTER PARES Says:

Didn’t you notice how the camera zoomed in for the shot of her shredding the paper?

  6. Katie Says:

Good for her and shame on Scarborough.

MSNBC - Listen up - if you want to have any credibility in the news CAN THE PARIS STORIES and stop forcing poor Keith Olberman to report on her. Every time he does it he looks like he is taking cod liver oil.

  7. Mikael Rudolph Says:

    THAT was beautiful.

There might actually be hope for the corporate news after all.

Embarrassing how Joe dissed her all the way through. She had better watch her back; this guy has a record with dead bodies, no?

  10. dixie blood Says:

Watch this sgment at least twice!

And then tell me the whole phucking thing is not staged!!

The taped visual segments are cut/edited right in where Joe Scarface hits his talking points…

    This is staged up bullsh!t!!!

  11. shane Says:

She is Zbigniew Brzezinski’s daughter. Apparently she has a clue.

  12. AkaDad Says:

Good for her. I hope she doesn’t get fired.

  13. Erroll Says:

Dobry [Polish for good]. Mika Brezinski has more integrity than her two pseudo colleagues will ever know. Keith Olbermann proclaims on Countdown tonight that Paris Hilton’s interview last night on Larry king was boring while ignoring the fact that NBC paid $1 million to interview the vapid celebrity after she was released from jail.

  14. Zep Tepi Says:

Didn’t you notice how the camera zoomed in for the shot of her shredding the paper? Comment by PRIMVS INTER PARES

Nope. Didn’t watch it. =) Aint gonna watch it.

  15. Jack Says:

I honestly don’t think it was staged — for the simple reason that they actually never reported on the Paris story. They went at it three times, and the words didn’t even come out of her mouth. If it were staged, I think they would have forced her to report something about it.

  16. E_I Says:

Fight the power! Reporters should report on real stuff. Leave Paris to the tabloids. Of course, the news network have become tabloids.

  17. Badmoodman Says:

Mika interviewing Coulter on Pay-Per-View. Broadcast gold.

  18. Leporello Says:

Good for her! At least Somebody had the guts to stand up for sanity! If only the rest of the MSM sits up on their hind legs and takes notice.

I’m writing right now to say “Hell yeah, thanks a bunch, keep it up!” Paris Hilton is not news, unless she happens to be standing near some other event that’s actually noteworthy.

Very obviously a stunt. Or maybe something Ms. Brezinski proposed and producers went along with. Nobody is reacting with the remotest kind of genuine surprise, the camerawork is utterly unreactive as well. They’d cut to commercial in a heartbeat if this were unplanned.

Still, as stunts go, at least there’s an admirable point being made here, if NBC is consistent and bars all things Coulter-related, along with whittling the Today Show down to 5 solid minutes of useful reportage.

I haven’t seen anything to indicate that the so called ‘fairness’ doctrine will insure fair treatment of conservative viewpoints. Rather, we will get more ‘tax cuts for the rich’ rhetoric.

Governor Mario Cuomo has argued that, “Precisely because radio and TV have become our principal sources of news and information, we should accord broadcasters the utmost freedom in order to insure a truly free press.” (Mario Cuomo, “The Unfairness Doctrine,” The New York Times, September 20, 1993, p. A19.)

I have a question for you though: Did you know who Foley was before the page scandal? How do you expect people to know who Siegelman is if nobody tells us?
But I thank you for correcting my mistake on his article.
    Comment by me12(yrs. old)

Yes, I had heard of Foley before the page scandal. After all, he was Republican deputy-whip in 2006 and had also served as Chairman of the Committee on Missing and Exploited Children–the perfect position for a pedophile, of course.
Well, in contrast to your original claim, the “Washington Post” did tell us who Siegelman is as well as his party affiliation; at least the paper didn’t erroneously claim the wrong one, as Faux News did with Foley. Also, I am not against reporting corruption by Democrats, such as Siegelman or Jefferson, etc.; but my point here is that the former was out of office and from a small state without the influence of California, NY, or even Florida, for example. Moreover, if he was elected in Alabama, he is probably more of a conservative Democrat than the “lefty” you trolls have called him.
Finally, if you want to ask why certain media outlets tend to put the designation R on corrupt Rethugs earlier into the article than they do with corrupt Dems (and, yes, I am admitting there are corrupt Dems), why don’t you take the issue up with the medium concerned?

Thats what he is saying, but doesn’t make it true, we see all kinds of ‘conservative bias’ in the news. From Limbaugh to Coulter to Oreilly. The media, as you noted in this post, is interested in creating controversy, to try and apply the shennaigans of the media to the salus populi is nuts in my opinion. I don’t play group think and am part of no group. m12 thinks he is. Good for him, just leave me out of the media controversy he associates himself with and therefore creates, in his mind perhaps, this false assumption that I agree with the media, left or right.

  161. abigdog Says:

i think what makes scarborough so contemptuous of the pubilc is the astounding discovery he’s been made privy to by the neocons that the elite can lead public attitudes and interests in any direction they like. the pity is that people like scarborough and the neocons prefer to lead them into the gutter rather than uplifting them to a higher level of consciousness. scarborough’s willingness to mock a sincerity and dedication to principle is sickening.

  162. michael Says:

I don’t even want to know about a woman with cojones. So she has them. So what? There are too many women with cojones - they are called men.

If something is happening, it is news. If she personally doesn’t like Paris Hilton, that is not journalism, that is what is left of her ovaries sensing (I won’t say “thinking” for the obvious reason) a rival female.

And you guys want to run a woman for President? You want to give a cat atomic weapons? No married man will EVER vote for a woman.

  163. Adam Says:

Heh, my take on it was that they both understood her position and were being purposely difficult because of it and maybe to poke fun at a fellow anchor. Joe’s decent folk. It’s why many people on both sides of the divide find him to be good company.

  164. Jim Says:

  166. Bernard Quatermass Says:

“There is no “conservative” bias in the media.”

    No. Just a “stupid” bias.

  167. Scott Mercer Says:

    This is a morning show.

They are employing the kind of news-meets-talk stream-of-consciousness coffee-klatch format pioneered by Howard Stern, ripped off by Don Imus, and perfected for television by KTLA in Los Angeles.

Calling this “staged” is giving it too much credit, and that they rehearsed this. They didn’t rehearse it, but all the people knew what each one of them was going to do. They are encouraged to inject large amounts of their own personalities and their own opinions into a rambling conversational presentation, and go “off script.”

The producer and or the executives in charge probably had no problem with Mika playing the role of the righteous offended journalist and tearing up the story to stir up some publicity for their show. It was a silly story and everyone knew it, but all the producers on every news show felt obliged to cover this shlock, because “that’s what the public wants to see.” In any event, the story was played out, at its end, and there was no risk in refusing to cover the story any more BECAUSE THE STORY WAS OVER!!!

So, to summarize: not “staged” as such, but certainly “posed.”

But I do appreciate her setting fire (or trying to) to the copy and I like her a lot.

  168. Paul Says:

Let’s all discuss the fake news on a fake blog! Just like broadcast media, which now includes most web hosts like AOL and Yahoo, there is nothing of substance! Everything we see is staged. It’s pathetic.

  171. Parrotlover77 Says:

Sexism appears to be live and well with Scarborough group there. They talked down to her at every point they could and even smelled her ripped up papers (joke obviously, but still gross) after she attempted to dispose of them. That was a pretty disgusting there. I’m impressed with how she handled those two jerks. I can see the glass-ceiling from here it was so obvious.

  172. mayhem Says:

The first victim in a the collapse of a democracy is journalism. I am glad that Mika had enough guts to stand up for it. Now I wonder how long they are going to have her with those sexist jerkoffs, scarborough and company anyway.

  173. Jonathan Says:

I work in a minor tv studio. I can’t really tell if it was staged or improvised. First thing to say is whatever it was it was live. It’s a morning show. So, look for the insiders lines. “Move up the prompter”. the shredder was not lit. or the shader couldn’t adjust to the drop in light level. Also, this is an edited video. Live i am sure it was much longer and a lot more boring. Don’t think it was staged just edited for enterntainment purposes.

  174. Paul in LA Says:

“I love hearing the idiot next to her say, “Why is she such a journalist?” and (when they run the Hilton clip) “Look at that strut!”

Scarborough says, “you know what she’s thinking, she’s thinking ‘How can I further the Kingdom of God in Heaven.”

MSNBC — no longer even taking itself seriously.

Believing in Bush has destroyed their brains.

  175. D.G. Says:

This is staged. MSNBC wants people to talk about this clip, and believe that MSNBC is a more integral journalism outlet than the other stations. But watch the clip closely, and notice how she finds a lighter that has been conveniently placed within reach of her. She didn’t even have to reach into his pockets, because the lighter was already in his hands or on the table. Either that, or they were planning on having a quick smoke while on the set.

  177. Shirley Says:

WAS JOE SCARBOROUGH INVOLVED IN THE DEATH OF HIS ALLEGED MISTRESS LORI KLAUSITIS. At the time of her mysterious death, ruled accidental by a Florida medical examiner who had recently had his license revoked in Missouri for fraudulently altering the results of an autopsy there, the U.S. news media was raging about Democratic congressman Gary Condit and Chandra Levy. NO major international or national news coverage was given to then congressman Joe Scarborough (R-Fl) and the death of his assistant Lori Klausutis. The Washington Post reported the death ONCE in a one paragraph statement and that was it.

  178. dave Says:

Staged or not Mika rocks. The Hilton story should in no way lead a broadcast.

  179. Animadverto Says:

That was not a stunt. Mika was clearly upset and this was a contentious point prior to the airing. Way to go Mika; Paris Hilton is not news.

  180. Robt Says:

    Look idiots,

    It is not just clebrities.

There is Jefferson with ill gotten cash in his freezer, Mark Foley chasing male pages for sex on the peoples payroll, Ann Coulter that has a mental illness of hatred for certain Americans, A Vice President that cannot figure out what branch of our government he is in after being there for quite some time during a time of war, A President that thinks there are too many OBGYN’s out there that want to share their love with wemon across this nation, Rush Limbaugh who condemns others with drug problems but himself with Oxycotton takes a vacation to a place where child boy prostitution is amok and he takes plenty of viagra with him.

So go figure why you fixate on the so called glamour world while Halibuton steals from the nations treasury, Blackwater kills innocents in the name of the US military unrestrained, and Alberto Gonzales our Dept of justice head has so corrupted the justice dept that anarchy is around the corner. So let Rome burn while you fiddle with yourselves……………………………….

  181. peacemover Says:

That was all cleverly staged theater. It is a shameless ratings-boosting ploy… Corporate media are ALL sell-outs… I used to really like Keith Olberman’s show until even he became Paris Hilton central… SHILL

  182. Aronda Says:

I’ve about had it with Joe S. On this morning’s program, he continually cut off his tablemates, refusing to let them finish their sentences, only to insert what he thought was more important. Which it wasn’t. I used to watch his evening show, mainly because it followed Chris Matthews, and also because I believed I was getting a different but viable point of view. But today’s exhibit of his need to feel superior to his on-air co-hosts (?) was the last straw. Hey Joe… You’re pushy, rude, and obnoxious on TV. If I wanted more of that, I would tune into Fox news.

  183. Gil Says:

ScarredBurro is a jackass. He’s a typical Rethuglican who expects to be allowed to get away with murder.

Mika should be glad she wasn’t found dead in his office after crossing him.

As for those who believe that a studio cameraman’s impromptu zoom is proof this incident was staged… well, you probably believe Dubya’s lies about Saddam, bin Laden, The Air Guard, Gitmo, etc, etc, etc… suffice it to say that a college intern could execute that zoom.

My question is: why do the anchors on MSNBC & CNBC refer to the Democrats (a three syllable word) as “Dems” but never shorten Republican (four syllables) to “Reps” (rhymes with creeps)?
