Pelosi: ‘Hate Radio’ Hijacked Political Discourse With ‘Xenophobic, Anti-Immigrant’ Rhetoric

Last night, PBS’s Charlie Rose interviewed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). During their discussion, Rose asked Pelosi about her opinion of the immigration bill in the Senate (which was defeated today).

Pelosi praised several provisions of the bill, but strongly criticized the bill’s vehement opponents on the radical right — especially on talk radio. Pelosi objected to their tactics saying that “talk radio, or in some cases hate radio…just go on and on and on in a xenophobic, anti-immigrant” manner. Pelosi noted that when it comes to bashing undocumented immigrants, “all of a sudden, all these people of faith are just very unforgiving.”

Watch it:

Pelosi’s characterization of the “xenophobic” and “anti-immigrant” dialogue on talk radio is well-documented. In recent weeks, Media Matters has highlighted several particularly egregious examples:

Bill O’Reilly asserted that supporters of the immigration bill “hate America” and “want to flood the country with foreign nationals, unlimited, unlimited, to change the complexion” of our society. [Link]

Michael Savage called a Hispanic advocacy group, National Council of La Raza, “the Ku Klux Klan of the Hispanic people” and said that La Raza “is the most stone racist group I’ve ever seen in this country!” [Link]

Neal Boortz argued in favor of the controversial border fence, stating, “I don’t care if Mexicans pile up against that fence like tumbleweeds in the Santa Ana winds in Southern California. … [J]ust run a couple of taco trucks up and down the line.” [Link]

Though conservatives may take up 91 percent of the talk radio airwaves, talk radio is not representative of the American people, who broadly supported the key components of the legislation. More information about the radically conservative bias in daytime talk radio HERE.

ROSE: Let me move from foreign to domestic. Immigration. What’s going to happen this week, next week on an immigration proposal that both the president and Senator Kennedy both would like to see passed?

PELOSI: First, let me do something that may surprise you. Let me praise the president. I think he’s been very courageous in fighting for an immigration bill that will bring some order to the situation that is in our country. I think the president is doing what is right, what he believes is right, and it’s a tough fight in his own party.

The principles that we have on our — on the House side in terms of the Democrats are that we will secure our borders, we will have workplace enforcement, we will protect our workers, we’ll unify families, and we’ll have a path to legalization.

Some of those features are present in the Senate bill.

What’s going to happen this week? The Senate will vote as to — for cloture, as to whether they can end filibuster and go to debate on the bill. That will be on Thursday. And then they will go from there to see whether they have the votes to pass the bill.

Of course, we’ll be waiting to see if the bill meets the standards that we have, or what compromises we can make, because it is very important for us to have an immigration bill.

ROSE: And what do you think the likelihood of having one is?

PELOSI: It all depends on the leadership of the president of the United States. The problem he is having is largely in his own party on this, and it is — I’ve said it now for a year and a half — if the president wants the legislation, the legislation will pass.

ROSE: Have the proponents of this bill done a good enough job to sell it to the country?

PELOSI: It’s amazing. If you take individual pieces of the bill, the American people support it. There is an element in our — well, talk radio, or in some cases hate radio, where they just go on and on and on in a xenophobic, anti-immigrant…

ROSE: Calling it amnesty, amnesty, amnesty.

PELOSI: Amnesty, which it is not. And it’s interesting because my faith — I’m a Catholic and from San Francisco, which I’m proud to represent in the Congress…

ROSE: Via Baltimore.

PELOSI: Via Baltimore, Maryland, which I’m very proud of as well. And in both places, my faith was very important to me.

Song of St. Francis is the anthem of the city of San Francisco. St. Francis is our patron saint. And we always talk when there is hatred, we will bring love. His song, make me a channel — where there is hatred, may we bring love, where there’s despair, may we bring hope; where there is darkness, light. And to forgive is to be forgiven.

And all of a sudden, all these people of faith are just very unforgiving.

ROSE: They are not willing to forgive.

PELOSI: They’re not willing to say, OK, they made a mistake. Now, they have to pay all these fines, they have to do all of these things, which will require them to have paid their debt to society, but we will never forgive them. It’s not about amnesty. Amnesty…

ROSE: So why do you think they continue to hold that view?

PELOSI: I really don’t want to characterize anyone else’s motivation. I just think that they haven’t been blessed with the experience that many of us have with living in a mixed society, where we know that the future of America depends on this constant invigoration of people coming in. I think, justifiably so, they’re unhappy that people came in not strictly legally. Some came legally, maybe 30, 40 percent, but overstayed their welcome. So there’s an unhappiness about that, and I respect that.

But what we’re saying is, make them pay their debt to society, and then let’s get on a path to legalization, which is a long and circuitous one. They get at the end of the line of anybody waiting to become a citizen or to come into our country.

But what’s interesting about it is is that they really — I mean, what are we going to do with 12 million people? Does anyone want to pay the price of arresting them all? Are we going to send them all home when so much of our, whether it’s our agriculture industry or other industries, depend on their work? And now they have children born in America. But it is — it’s difficult, and I respect — as I say, I don’t want to mischaracterize. I know there are some who are exploiting this for reasons that are not highly motivated. But there are many people in our country who have legitimate concerns about obeying the law and respecting that.

  1. PeterW says:

She’s right about the xenophobia, but it was still a rotten bill. The guest-worker program was specifically designed by big business to break and eliminate what’s left of the American middle class.

  2. MsJoanne says:

All one has to do is listen to any right wing show, be it radio or television, for more than 10 minutes and you will hear hate towards someone, usually with a 2nd person cheering it on.

As I said before, I am all for immigration, that’s how my family got here 100 years ago, but this guest worker thing was nothing short of indentured servitude.

Now that we have segregated schools again, I suppose we can grow our own indentured servants again, though.

What a sad state of affairs this country is in. Again, I sing (to the tune of My Country Tis of Thee. Sing along boys and girls.

    America. RIP

Oh how I mourn for thee
Once land of liberty, your loss so stings
    land where my father died
once there was so much pride
    now there is only strife,
bring freedom back to my life, and I will sing!

Great land I cry for thee
Once noble and so free, how did we stray?
    We used to compromise
Now all they do is lie
How many more will die before they pay?

  3. Intern says:

Great post. There is too much vitriol out there, especially regarding the immigration debate.

  5. Damian says:

What PeterW said. Correct and succinct.

  6. SGT Higgins says:

MsJ – Now that we have segregated schools again — Not true MsJ Not denying access to any school for any child…just not using race as a factor in sending them to school.

  7. ForTruth says:

Look! We still have a speaker of the house. Thought she disappeared.

I bet she’s sitting at some sort of table. Or there is some sort of table in that room.

  8. profmarcus says:

as the padrino (godfather) of a young mexican girl whose father, my close friend, was killed in a tragic highway traffic accident while in kansas illegally working construction with his brother in order to be able to send money back for the support of his wife and daughter, it pains me beyond words to read vicious comments like boortz and savage… they’re 100% racist bigots and ought to be barred from our public airwaves…

And, yes, I DO take it personally

  9. mistaken for a wingnut says:

I agree that this is a terrible law. Truth is that the border IS wide open. That saying that, “we have to fight them over there so we dont have to fight them here” is moot. If any terrorists want in this country, there is about 4000 miles of open border that they can walk across.

  10. Teamsters Union says:

I am glad that this bill got shot down. It was anti-union and anti American worker. At least our Congress had enough sense to shoot this one down. Umm, did Bush want this bill passed?

  11. Fed the Fcuk Up! says:

Thanks Nancy for throwing aside those pesky and irrelevant issues of ending the illegal and immoral crusade that the USA is engaging in in the middle east, that stupid torture stuff, that Habeas Corpus Christy issue (whatever that is), government contractors run amok, and government corruption, so that you can focus on the most pressing and urgent issue that faces us today: How do we get more free PR for crazy radio personalities.

    I feel safer already.

Oh, and Nancy, go fcuk yourself.

    Progressive indeed.

  12. American Worker says:

How the hell would immigrants making 3 bucks an hour be able ot afford a $5500 fine? I make $20 an hour and there is NO WAY that I would be able to afford that kind of fine without going bankrupt!

  13. John Sacks says:

This is not the poor mexican man who is trying to make a living – this is about open borders – lax national security and turning our backs on a corrupt Mexican government who has screwed their country up enough to make so many people want to leave.

  14. Anders says:

    Bush want this bill passed?

    Comment by Teamsters Union — June 28, 2007 @ 5:34 pm

yes he did. Bush only caters to the Haves and Have mores! He has no interest for “We the People of the United States of America”. Or at least not for 98% of them.

  15. CT V_1 says:

American’s aren’t for amnesty, Nancy. I don’t know what hippie-poll you get that from. Talk Radio IS representative of the American people.
    Nancy should know her place.

“Progressivism” is the Hippie-state of our generation. It’ll soon become extinct.

  16. John Sacks says:

Kennedy wanted the 12,000,000 votes – he could care less about this country.

  17. MsJoanne says:

Sgt Higgins, tell that to the poor black kids in MS whose schools never made it to par before. Now, their ability to get any kind of education is even less.

Government sponsored school vouchers for the rich and our public education systems get less and less support from the government (NCLB is a joke, ask any educator).

It’s all about those who have. Crumbs for the rest. And if you don’t think that’s going to create a further rift in job ability down the road, that road to our own American indentured servants, you’re sadly mistaken.

Immigration for guest workers won’t be needed. There will be too many masses here who will gladly work for food, but they won’t have to hold the cardboard signs at the intersections anymore. They can live in their boxes and work for whomever will give them a job, until they complain.

No unions = no worker rights. I have never been a huge fan of unions, but this had opened my eyes. Same with the NRA. Never a huge fan but I am thrilled that the people have the right to bear arms because I have a feeling that they are going to be needed in the years to come.

  18. John Sacks says:

    72% polled against this bill.

  19. Anders says:

Progressivism IS the People of the United States. At least %66 of them. The other 34% are usually refered as conservatives, or fascists or Nazi’s. Something like that.

  20. Ringo says:

The bill failed because the majority of Americans were against it, not because we are xenophobic, racist or anti-immigrant, but because the bill was bad for America.

Build a effective border fence and then most Americans would be glad to make concessions for the millions of illegal immigrants that are already here.

Seal the border first, then we’ll talk.

  21. Jeremy says:

    OT:

And the Chinese Poison Train (thanks to consumerist.com for the term) continues. Latest: Chinese seafood contains drugs and food additives that are illegal in the US. This after lead-tainted paint on toy trains from China, tires that blew their treads off, toothpaste tainted with stuff that normally goes into antifreeze (!), and of course, bless poor Fluffy and Spot’s souls, the melamine infested pet food that killed thousands of our pets and prompted a recall of pet food that was worse than any recall I can ever remember (and I’m 33 years old!)

China grows fat on our consumerist ways, happily feeding us poison and unsafe gear while threatening to dump our currency if we retaliate, while ole Dubya and Darth keep going back to the Bank of China ATM and taking out loan after loan after god-damn-foolish loan to pay for their Tax Cuts for the Rich ™ and the War on Terrah ™..

  22. leftcoast says:

This was a disaster of a bill. It had so many riders in it that you could sink a ship. Most of congress had no idea of everything in the bill.
    We need a clean bill.
But first lets enforce the laws on the books now.
I support immigration by the way. Just want it done without corporate influence.

  23. james k. sayre says:

Recently Bush has claimed that we have to have a new guest-worker visa program to help secure our borders! He didn’t bother to mention the fact that we already have eight (8) guest-worker visa programs on the books. We have the “H-B” guest worker visa program, the “E” guest worker visa program, the “I” guest worker visa program, the “L” guest worker visa program, the “O” guest worker visa program, the “P” guest worker visa program, the “R” guest worker visa program and the NAFTA guest worker visa program. A veritable alphabet soup bowlful of guest worker visa programs… And Bush claims that adding a ninth guest worker visa program will help secure the border?

All we need to do to solve the whole problem of illegal immigration is to vigorously enforce the present Federal laws against corporations illegally hiring illegal aliens. The Bush regime has been reading our Emails, checking our internet searches and can monitor our credit card purchases; and yet they cannot figure out who can legally work in the United States? Oh, please. In this age of computers, Internets and massive databases, it would be simple to find out which potential employees have legitimate Social Security cards or green cards. This whole “immigration reform bill” is just another gift to the greedy large corporations that are mindlessly destroying our middle class and lowering wages with cheap imported labor. Just say “No” to corporate greed and this bogus “immigration reform bill.”

If the Federal government vigorously enforces the present laws against the hiring of illegal aliens, this whole problem will solve itself. We won’t have to deport a single alien. They will just buy bus tickets back home if they can’t find any legal employment in the U. S.

  24. John Sacks says:

All you have to do is get a bunch of busses and INS agents and raid the Home Depots and 7-11’s – you can probably round up 90% of them in one day.

I agree with this statement. I think that the public of both parties hated this bill. I too, am glad it got shot down.

  27. need to vote says:

What her concern should be is how is she going to handle the lying, cheating, traitors and criminals in Washington. Everone says it is a bad beill that makes no sense. It legalizes the criminal acts of people. Which is what she wants since she figures they will vote Democrat. You cant call people that oppose you as racists, its as bad as the Executive Branch calling everyone traitors becase they did not support going to war on a bunch of lies. I live in community that has benn taken over by the illegals. They live 2-4 familes to a home with 10 or more people living in a home designed for a single family. The education system has been reduced to by a couple of grade levels for non-English speaking people. The gang problems and killings have increased significantly. Her concer should impeaching the presidnet, closing the borders and enforrcing our laws. Amnesty did not work for Regan and it won’t work now. If that is the case what will the fines and penalties be to get Amnesty and get out of prison.

Troll: “When will I be understood”
Answer: When you can truly make sense”

John, the Bush administration has been undermining it from the start. Too little troops initially. Too poor equipment. No real goals (except to get the oil – has that little document been signed yet, btw?)

They don’t need any help in the undermining department. They have done just fine on their own.

  33. Bongs 4 the SCOTUS says:

I am an independant. I vote for both parties. I voted for mostly Democrat in the last election to rid of the corruption. but I have to honestly say, I am disappointed in Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. I had high hopes for them but in the end, they have just gone along with the status quo. Just keeping the program going. What a sad state for the politics of America.

  34. John Sacks says:

Undermining from the start. yea right. When you have a left in this country that so hates our Constitution that they started undermining this effort from day one. Once their buddies the press caught on and the enemy started watching, they realized that we would not have resolve because of this.

  35. MsJoanne says:

    #33.

The Dems have advanced 239 pieces of legislation that the GOP held up.

They don’t have the votes to override a veto.

They are being objected to by some member of the GOP for every bill introduced.

Not sure exactly what Dems are supposed to do. There are no moderate GOP members anymore and there is no compromise. In our history, there has always been compromise to accomplish things. That has completely stopped since Bush took office (literally). First it was rubberstampers then bottleneckers.

No compromise = nothing gets done.

I wish it wasn’t so, but it is.

Oh and we can’t count on the SCOTUS being supportive to the laws anymore. We’re totally f*cked.

Stop trying to force America away from Free Speech and just join the free market of idea’s already. Are you scared you idea’s won’t stand up in the free market or what?

  48. John Sacks says:

In regards to the so called fairness doctrine, the DNC leadership will attempt to pull the same thing that Chavez just did in that bastion of socilaist south America – no different.

  49. need to vote says:

I’m like the rest of you and voted for the Democrats in last few elections because the corruption, and rubber stamping of the Kings proposals. But now I regret it. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid need to step down, or do what they were put in office to do. Support the Constitution, Bill of Rights and rebuild what the rest of the World thinks of America. I think these two are acting more like they belong to the King and his court, I think they are the court jesters. These two need to serve the will of the majority. I give them another couple of weeks and then I will never vote for another ball less, weak willed democrat again. You two are cowards and need to step down, or better yet jump off a cliff.

  50. shane says:

    Comment by John Sacks

And you know that because O’Reilly and Limbaugh told you so, right?

  51. John Sacks says:

46 – if it wasn’t for the overwhelming response from the People (of every party) to kill this immigration bill most of the GOP was ready to take this moderate view and side with the moderate view of the President. McCain, Warner, et al – not conservatives by a long shot.

  52. John Sacks says:

The fairness doctrine is a lame attempt to curb speach of the majority becasue the free market rejects the speach of the minority. Thing is, the so called minority has ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, CSPAN, MSNBC, etc. so their message is getting out their to more people than that of the conservative media.

  53. MsJoanne says:

Keep cracking me up, John. You’re on a roll.

    Moderate president! Moderate WARNER?? HA!

Christ it’s hard to type with tears of laughter in my eyes. Or are those tears of our country dying a little more.

  54. pk says:

I don’t listen to talk radio and am a legal immigrant. I don’t support amnesty for illegal immigrants. I went through all the right channels and waited years for a green card and citizenship. What does an amnesty say to all the people who did things the right way? Are they suckers for following the law?
Also this issue is less about illegal immigration and more about businesses being allowed to pay slave wages for labor. The moment the illegals become legal, they will demand (rightly), fair wages and benefits. Thats when business will once again look to Mexico and south America for cheap labor and encourage more illegal immigration. Regan had an amnesty program. That did not work. What makes anyone think that this amnesty will?
You don’t have to be a racist to oppose this ridiculous bil !

  55. John Sacks says:

In the free market of ideas and the capitalist approach to media, conservative talk radio has many more listeners than meda like Scare America. They can’t handle the fact that there truly are more right of center thinkers in this country than liberals.

  56. John Sacks says:

You must be really off the edge left if you don’t think Warner is a moderate. Just look at his voting record.

  57. John Sacks says:

Bush has created the biggest government since FDR – that is not conservative. Bush wanted amnesty for illegals – that is not conservative. Bush may be conservative with regards to the war – and some social issues but that is about it.

  58. CT V_1 says:

Note to TP: It wasn’t “talk radio” that killed this bill. People can and do flood their Congressman’s/Senator’s offices with e-mails, phonecalls, letters, etc., etc. Influence still lies there, too.

  59. CT V_1 says:

    Comment by John Sacks

In many ways, it seems, they already have their Democratic president. They don’t have much to complain about.

  60. Roger_Roger says:

    #57 You are correct sir!

Bush outside of war is the biggest Lib in the government right now.

  61. michael says:

She’s right about the Christian Right. There was many so called Christians that owned and justified slavery in the day. Many feel that the illegal immigrants are below them. Boy I would love to be a fly on the cloud when they are judged by God.

  62. Zooey says:

    Nancy should know her place.
    Comment by CT V_1

    What place would that be?

  63. John Sacks says:

Actually it was Christians (Catholics) who were abolitionists in that day. Also, the father of Liberalism, Thomas Jefferson was as hypocritical as his modern brothers and sisters – he wrote many pieces about slavery – siting that it would be a major downfall to the future of the country and yet he kept his slaves (and slept with a few) until his death.

  64. CT V_1 says:

    Comment by Zooey

Her place to stop attacking free speech and making stupid generalizations. I think I’m ashamed to have a Speaker/Senate Maj. Leader who supports unconditional amnesty.

Talk radio shouldn’t be disturbed, and that’s that.

  65. John Sacks says:

Not only do they support unconditional amnesty, they support the curbing of free speech – for those that opose them.

  66. John Sacks says:

The democrats were elected into power because of the vast numbers of voters that were tired of Bush’s movement away from his conservative principles (those that hate him voted Democrat regardless) and figured that change was better than nothing at this point. These same voters will wash away the liberal mess that has decended on Washington in 2008 – especially after the sound bites generated from the amnesty bill and the fairness doctrine.

  67. Eric Arthur Blair says:

All one has to do is listen to any right wing show, be it radio or television, for more than 10 minutes and you will hear hate towards someone, usually with a 2nd person cheering it on.

    Not anymore–Air Amerika tanked.

But as long as we’re going to censor “hate”, let’s not forget to include Howard Dean, Al Gore, Charles Rangel, Rosie O’Donnell, Charles Barron, Al Sharpton, Jesse HiJackson, Al Franken, Robert Byrd, etc, etc, etc.

But then again, we all know “hate” is defined as speech the left doesn’t like. Ask any conservative who’s had to face a Stalinist tribunal on campus for offending the tender sensibilities of a lefty.

  68. Trekkie says:

Not only do they support unconditional amnesty, they support the curbing of free speech – for those that opose them.

How about you actually read the Fairness Doctrine before you come here and pontificate?

And like O’Reilly and Limbaugh are going to tell you the truth anyway – can we say “massive conflict of interest”. Of course they don’t want the Fairness Doctrine reinstated – they might actually have to *gasp* compete for listeners!

Oh, and find me ONE Democratic Representative or Senator that actually supported unconditional amnesty to back up what seems to be the usual hyperbolic attack.

The Fairness Doctrine wa orinally designed to provide both sides of an argument on the public airways and was determined to be unconstitutional. In effect what it would do is force media companies to balance on-air conservative talents with liberal ones. The effect – given that there is bascially no audience for liberal talk radio – the companies would make a decision (business) to get rid of all of them and go spanish or some other format. The real problem with this is the government intrusion into the private market place – this violates more Constitutional rights than just the 1st ammendment.

What buffoons they are to hatch some complex process and have absolutely no concept about how to implement it in terms of cost to taxpayers, qualified personnel to handle the variety of positions necessary to it’s implementation, etc. What a bunch of losers this Congress has become!

What a Libertarian sack of selfishness you spout, twisting anything within reach, to be able to yell “fire” in a crowded theater. It would behoove you to notice that there is a community around you to whom you also have a relationship and responsibility to.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid need to step down, or do what they were put in office to do. Support the Constitution, Bill of Rights and rebuild what the rest of the World thinks of America.

If restoring the Bill of Rights and the Constitution is your goal, you’re voting for the wrong people.

Pelosi, Reid and their ilk, and the justices they would appoint, are the people who are constantly attacking the Bill of Rights.

They’ve shredded your First Amendment rights, limiting the right of citizens to petition their government. And the ROBERTS Court just beat back one of those assaults on the First Amendment–the noxious restriction that politicians cannot be criticized within 60 days before an election. Talk about government seizing power from the people.

And the left wing of the court just rewrote the Takings Clause, ruling that your property can be seized to build a shopping center if it generates greater tax revenue. They twisted the meaning of “public use” and misconstrued it to mean “public BENEFIT”.

It’s the Left that constantly attacks Second Amendment gun rights.

And it’s the Left that misconstrues the notion of “equal rights” to require race-based outcomes. And again, the Roberts Court just chipped away at a piece of that Orwellian interpretation.

If you REALLY care about the Bill of Rights, you should be celebrating these rulings and hoping for more of the same.

The left expends a ton of energy trying to figure out ways to circumvent, ignore or re-write the Constitution, not defend it. It took over 30 years for the Left to decimate the Bill of Rights, and it’s going to take a long time to put the Constitution back together. And the last thing that would aid in that effort would be to elect more people like Pelosi, Reid, Kennedy, Schumer and Clinton, who spit on the Bill of Rights with disdain.

Last time I looked that was called “treason against the United States”….oh…and let us not forget to add into this highly sophisticated debate the fact that now it appears that the highly illegal NSA warrantless wiretapping may actually net your cadre of buffons some real jail time….since they will not be able to claim executive privilege when it’s clear that federal law has been broken….it may be time to get out your waving hand and practice saying “bye bye” to their sorry butts as they are pitched out of office…

I consider you hateful when you try to silence a point of view by instituting speech codes aimed at an ideology you don’t agree with. I consider you hateful when you demonstrate the mere presence of conservatives exercising their right to speak at various events, acting like insane lunatics.

And I consider your leaders hateful when they make statements like “I hate Republicans and everything they stand for; Republicans are evil, braindead, never worked an honest day in their life” etc, etc, etc. Or when they call Republicans brown shirts, nazis, Hitler, that they hate minorities and want to oppress them, etc.

Funny thing is that in that study it showed that the Liberals collectively made more money. It also showed that Conservatives not only give twice as much but give a greater portion of their income – so who is more selfish? That study spoke volumes to the hypocricy of liberals in my book. One theory is that the Liberal would rather have the Government take it from the individual in the form of much higher taxes – and create more hand-out programs – which makes sense.

Besides, I think it might be appropriate for you to begin calling the Republicans, the “left for good party”.

I dunno, “indies” has a nice ring to it.

As for the “Left for Good” party, well, after Bush’s immitation of Ted Kennedy (spending, NCLB, McCain-Feingold, welfare state expansion, immigration), I’m inclined to agree.

    Comment by John Sacks — June 28, 2007 @ 6:08 pm

The main reason that radio has mostly conservative listeners is because most radio listeners are tired, old, white men. They are techo illiterate. The radio audience probably IS mostly conservative. I haven’t even listened to a radio station in probably ten years.

Liberals and Progressives are on the internet much more. They are more techno-savvy. The liberal political sites online have much more traffic than the conservative sites. Sites like Little green footballs and Redstate.com have one tenth the traffic as Daily KOS and Think Progress. And the comments here outnumber those sites 20-1. THAT is why the radio stations have more conservatives. It is an old and outdated technology.

    ‘Hate Radio’
    ———————-

I guess hate is in the eye of the beholder. Although I would agree that Michael savage is a bit extreme, most conservative doesn’t strike me as hateful at all. Personally I find websites like ThinkProgress, DailyKos and HuffingtonPost to be far more hate-filled than talk radio.

In fact the most hate-filled enviornment that I have ever been in are the so called “anti-war” rallies held by International ANSWER. The hate is so think at these marches that it borders on abuse to bring a child to such an event.

I’ve never BEEN to an anti-war rally, but I’ve seen plenty of them covered in the media (even if some of their more extreme loonies are kept out of the public eye by a protective media).

But I think everything you said is about right, including the fact that Savage can be over the top.

The clear intent of this provision [Logan Act] is to prohibit unauthorized persons from intervening in disputes between the United States and foreign governments. Nothing in section 953 [Logan Act], however, would appear to restrict members of the Congress from engaging in discussions with foreign officials in pursuance of their legislative duties under the Constitution.

I’ve never BEEN to an anti-war rally, but I’ve seen plenty of them covered in the media.

So you know all there is to know by the light that emanates from a cathode ray tube into your little room? And that by watching this light you can rationalize your little world statement?

Well, that’s the point. What I HAVE seen (and read) of them is plenty enough to make a judgement about the wackos who attend them. I doubt the stuff we aren’t privy to is going to put them in a better light.

I suspect get my information about anti-war rallies from the same sources you get your information on the Iraq war: TV, radio, newspaper, Internet. Do you think you can rationalize your worldview that way?

HaaaaaHaaaaaHaaaa. Reading all your posts cracks me up! I don’t read comedy any more! I come here.

My my! You blind snipers from that so called blog Little Green Footfungus, are getting desperate. You are admitting to your understanding that BARTELBOY is damn sharp and that VVGFU is as well. And yesterday one of you punching bags actually took the bait I offered and admitted that is where you trolls hang out. Yup The locker room at The West Hollywood Gym for Men.

So, tell us all here what you little trolls like to talk about? Do you fight eachother for the best sleeping spots under the bridge?

Yep, its a pleasure to see your head bang around on the ceiling as punching bags like to do. Blappity, blappity blappity blap.

    BwaaaaaHaaaaaHaaaaa

Tell me something trollie spokesthingee. Do all you trolls suffer from a persecution complex. I mean, why do you come here to get banged around like you do? I would guess you can’t sleep for thinking how you are gonna “get them libbers” in the morning. They do have meds that will help you know. Just tryin to be helpful…

Psssst…. I can’t find “luser” in the dictionary. Is that a new troll term? Trolls do speak in tongues, I hear.

That comment was by Michael Savage, I happen to agree with it since the fact is they are a hate group! Maybe I should include the numerous links of members of these groups engaging in hate? Now I have nothing to do with the KKK but I have not seen the KKK taking over a post office have you? I did watch a LaRaza group take over a post office in a clip on YouTube.

What a great day it was yesterday… THe Senate got it right by killing the bill.. I have to say THANK YOU to all those SEN’s who had second thoughts and changed their vote. THis was a BAD bill and we should all be happy it is dead.

NOW we need to turn to enforcing the laws and stoping these illigals from crossing the border. We need to treat them the same way we would get treated in their Country by law enforcement.. THink about it if a US Citizen crossed over into Mexico the Federales would have you in jail so fast!! THen they would probably tell you they need $500 just for you to make a phone call to a lawyer!!

What a great Day for the US

It is so fun to stir the hornet’s nest of mindless chatter. One comment was – “nothing but talking points that we have already heard”. Given that they were responses to nothing but talking points from the other side then I would say – sure. It is amazing how blind and dumb the followers of liberal fascism are – koolaid drinkers to the maximum. Is it ever possible to get a disucsion out of these blind idiots other than the personal attacks and shout downs? Nope.

  247. Edward R. Olbermann says:

Though conservatives may take up 91 percent of the talk radio airwaves, talk radio is not representative of the American people, who broadly supported the key components of the legislation.

IF this is the case than how come the bill didn’t pass

  248. chopper says:

Go back to Syria Pelosi. The people there have more respect for you then Americans. Lying dictators don’t make it here, not in the white house or congress. Nice try though. A woman of faith? Save it.

  249. Ruthiness says:

Hate radio? It’s more like “YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH” There is more hate for America in our current liberal majority Senate than any talk radio. This is the voice of pissed off Americans and you liberal just can’t stand that we HAVE a voice.

It’s a slippery damn slope you are getting onto because the same speech you censor today will be your own tomorrow.

This kind of talk makes me really feel the hate for liberals. Don’t even think about trying to silence us because you WILL regret it!

  250. Ruthiness says:

Oh and Pelosi and Kennedy and all the other “pro-AMNESTY” Senators are a bunch of lying commies who wish to destroy this country for their own personal greed. They are the puppets of the Bilderberger brothers and the other elites at the Federal Reserve.

OFF WITH THEIR HEADS! THEY ARE TRAITORS!

  251. Ruthiness says:

“Though conservatives may take up 91 percent of the talk radio airwaves, talk radio is not representative of the American people, who broadly supported the key components of the legislation.”

Not sure what “people” you were talking to because EVERYONE I talked to did NOT support this travesty of a bill. Perhaps you were talking to people who had no idea what was IN the bill – those are the only people who would support it besides the people who were actually asking us to bend over and take it up the ass.

  252. Ruthiness says:

FURTHERMORE… on Sirius there is PLENTY of liberal left wing radio channels. It just so happens that what THEY want to talk about the most is being GAY instead of really important things like current politics. Is that our fault? They have their slot on Sirius – there is no “domination” of radio air waves here.

AND.. if you support the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE that means that ALL the left wing TV media will have to make way for some conservative TV media. Of course, they will try to say “we’re not left wing” just like they tried to say this bill “is not amnesty”. Hey your programming didn’t work on lots of us because we don’t WATCH liberal left wing slime TV news.. I’m OFF the Matrix baby… and I see George Orwell’s 1984 staring us in the FACE – just about 20 years LATE.

I am SO sick and tired of liberals like Pelosi who think they know better what is good for this country than the majority of the PEOPLE and that does not include the illegal alien INVADERS because they are NOT part of OUR COUNTRY and THEY NEVER WILL BE!

I’m sick and tired of you liberals saying we are “anti-immigrant” and “racist”. Take a look at the group you are accusing of that! That group is made up of ALL races and citizens and LEGAL immigrants alike. The violent counter-protest in Leimert Park in LA really takes the cake when you had a bunch of commie anarchists accusing a group of BLACKS as being KKK! Umm.. yeah right…

  253. Kralizec says:

Though conservatives may take up 91 percent of the talk radio airwaves, talk radio is not representative of the American people.

That’s much like saying that conservatives ride 91 percent of unicorns. There are no unicorns, but plenty of horses, cars, airplanes, and bicycles; no one has a monopoly on them. There are no “talk radio airwaves,” but plenty of radio, TV, cable, satellite, Internet, and print means of conveying a point to others; no one has a monopoly on them.

As for talk radio’s not being “representative of the American people,” neither am I, and neither are you, Ryan Powers. ThinkProgress.org isn’t “representative of the American people”; neither is HotAir.org, nor CBS News, nor Fox News. Neither you nor I am here to be representative of anyone–unless you’re keeping something from me, sweetheart. We’re all out here to say what seems to be good or just or beautiful to us, and the last thing we want to do is worry about whether we’re being “representative” of the same, lame opinions other people have. Isn’t that right, Ryan? I mean, you’re Ryan F’n Powers, not just some shill for “majority opinion.” And just like me, you have better things to do than defend yourself and others from equal-time bean-counters.

  254. Gekkobear says:

    SO, Rasmussen’s poll shows 50% oppose the bill, 22% approve, 28% undecided…

Of the decided, 50 / 72 comes to 70% opposed. That 30% of those decided for the bill must be ladies for you to be claiming “broad support”? And I think they prefer being called chickies to broads… but I could be wrong there.

Oddly, polls of actual people finding out how they felt about this specific bill in particular (not it’s general ideas, or “key provisions” but the bill itself) doesn’t give you “broad support” it gives you more than 2/1 opposition. You really have to dance aroudn teh facts to make the claims you did with any semblence of credibility.

But I’m sure the fact that a majority of those polled (again, who weren’t undecided) believe that doing nothing is better than the bill that failed (45% to 32%) doesn’t deter you at all.

Go ahead and fictionalize the bill, deal with small portions that people like, not the nightmare it was; and tell yourself that it was popular, and the right wing fringe killed it. But don’t claim to be a reality-based community while dealing solely with a pleasant fiction.

  255. Tracy says:

“Though conservatives may take up 91 percent of the talk radio airwaves, talk radio is not representative of the American people, who broadly supported the key components of the legislation.”

Nice try TP by slipping that the American people support the “key components of the legislation”. Yes I support many of the key components also but there are components that I would never entertain. For one the bill forbids the federal government to use any information included in an application for amnesty in national-security or criminal investigations.
Just because you might support parts of the bill doesn’t mean that the American people what the bill to pass…because other parts of the bill are crap.

  256. FloatingRock says:

Amnesty = forgiving somebody for their crimes

Pelosi complains the problem is that people aren’t willing to forgive; yet she denies this is about amnesty.

This joker doesn’t even realize that she’s contradicting herself. Or maybe she does but she thinks her constituency is too stupid to grasp this fact. Either Pelosi is an idiot or she thinks everybody else is.

  257. peacenprosperity says:

    1) Seal the borders. Move the National Guard bases in all the border states to the border and have all the National Guardsman in the country do their training there. Afterall we will be fighting in the desert for a long time to come.
    2) Seize the occupational licenses, business licenses, liquor licenses, building permits of any one caught employing illegal aliens. They will not be allowed to even apply for the licenses back for 1 year.
    3) Cut off all welfare and social aid to illegal aliens (except emergency medical treatment). Do not educate children who are in the country illegally. No drivers licenses. No work permits. Withhold federal funds from any state or city that is a sanctuary city.
    4) Revoke the Certificate of Occupancy for any dwelling that is rented to an illegal alien and barr the property from being eligible for a new one for 1 year.
    5) The law regarding children born in the US being citizens was enacted for the children of slaves. We don’t even have to change the law or the Constitution, it was always misused. Just have the Supreme Court clarify.
    6) Revoke the charter of any bank doing business with illegal aliens.
    7) Strengthen the requirements for citzenship and streamline the process to a maximum process time of 1 year. Do away with chain immigration. If we have 5 spots left and a qualified applicant wants to bring 3 members of his family, if they all pass the requirements we wil have 1 spot left.
    8) Provide free transportation to the country of the illegal aliens choosing.
Do all this and you can just ignore the illegal aliens as they head for the border.

  258. Nancy says:

NO wonder Pelosi won’t impeach Bush. They are in a conspiracy together to destroy the working people of America. OFF with their heads! Traitors, enemies of the people, TERRORISTS are in OFFICE, TREASON!!! IMPEACH Peolsi !!!

I use to work for La Raza and some other pro Hispanic Organizations. La Raza in their private meetings talked about how the whites stole their land and how whites suppress them. The illegal alien is a citizen in the US and they are being enslaved by the whites. They want more Hispanics to show their power to the White House and want a Hispanics to overpower America. They gave me a hard time for not speaking Spanish correctly and so forth. I will never work for a minority right non-profit organization again. I have to agree with Mr. Savage

  262. randy moss says:

Hey John sux I mean sacks I mean BALL SACK! You Left wing F-ucks can choke on your coolaid all day long if you want and I would prefer that. But It’s a fact that Dems and Libs are as your Moniker implies Jack ASSes! An its also a fact that most dems are ugly. Grow some B#alls if you think you are smarter than most conservatives that shows how stupid you really are. And as far as Illegals go if the Us government won’t do something about it.Americans should. Like going into Quick trip in the am and wearing offensive anti illegal shirts and doing other things to make them feel unwanted because they are unwanted.People are just to afraid to say what they really feel from fear of being called racist …I personally don’t give A Fu-ck what you or anyone else thinks and screw politically correct……And Nancy Polocie should be hung by her tits. That B#itch

  263. randy moss says:

Oh and by the way Bush should be hung by his short and curlies too. For welcoming all the invaders along with you left wing F@ucks. Im not right or left in an independent. And an American who would like for my family to grow up in America not MEXICO!

  264. randy moss says:

As many of you know and have said here a majority of american people do not want the whole face of america to change . That is exactly what will happen if americans let all these non citizen mostly poor and uneducated border jumpers stay. Why are people afraid to say exactly what they feel. Why do you even care what other less smarter people think of you .If they have a problem with it guess what ? They have the problem not me or you. Let them pay for the health care of these people. If they go to a hospital and use the health care system they leave and thats that no social so they dont pay.I go to hospital and if I dont pay they send me to equifax and ruin my credit….And Im an American how is that fair!!!!!!!

  265. John H says:

If La Raza “is the most stone racist group I’ve ever seen in this country!” what cave has Michael Savage been living in. Apparently Savage never saw the KKK. I have seen racism in the military–but then Mike Savage never served in the military.

  266. randy moss says:

    Whats your point John?

  267. randy moss says:

La Raza is a pro illegal organization who thinks the white man is inslaving Mexicans. Ok remember the word Illegal. They dont belong here to begin with and if they want to leave then they can at any time. Michael Savage just calls it as he sees it.It’s really not that hard to see John. Take off your blinders open your eyes and hopefully the sun will shine through.

  268. randy moss says:

And by the way to answer your question. The KKK has been marginalized and no one takes them serious anyway. Millions of latinos and Mexicans listen to La Raza and they do take La Raza seriously.

  269. Thommo says:

Everyone has a right to their point of view, and to express it.

But when you say things like “you left wing F@ucks”, then it seems some what disingenuous to say in the next sentence: “Im not right or left i’m an independent”. Your first comment pretty much belies that you are not centrist, and certainly not likely to accept ideas from the left.

Just so you know, people in the rest of the Anglosphere don’t even see the Democrats as a party from the left, but then, politics isn’t so ‘party line’ driven as in the US.

On another point, talkback radio is much listened to by people who often are not in a position to access other services at the time. This could be for a number of reasons: listening whilst driving, listening whilst doing manual labour in workshops, cleaning at home. For example, in China where car ownership is low, the influence of radio is negligible compared to TV and newspapers, whilst the penetration of inexpensive internet cafes actually makes the web more accessible there.
