The Politico’s John Bresnehan reports that tomorrow, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) will “announce a new coordinated effort to force votes in July to end the Iraq war“:
Reid has already publicly declared that Senate Democrats will offer four Iraq-related amendments to the upcoming 2008 Defense authorization bill, including a proposal by Reid and Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) to set a firm timetable to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq by next spring.
Pelosi is planning to announce that the House will also vote on a bill setting a new withdrawal timetable of April 1, 2008, although the details of the proposal were still up in the air at press time, according to Democratic sources. The House will consider this proposal as a freestanding bill, said the sources.
Pelosi is also planning to force a vote on a proposal by Rep. Ike Skelton (D-Mo.), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, to repeal the 2002 use-of-force resolution for Iraq. [...]
In addition, House Democrats will push proposals to prohibit the creation of permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq, as well as a “readiness” initiative similar to that authored by Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.).

June 28th, 2007 at 10:54 pmWithdrawal timetable on the table along with impeachments! How ’bout it, Pelosi? Think you can pull it off this time?
June 28th, 2007 at 10:59 pmSpeaker Pelosi:
Try coordinating it with IMPEACHMENT!!!!!
June 28th, 2007 at 10:59 pmAnd the Chimp will veto it.
What we need is to put the I word back on the table.
June 28th, 2007 at 11:01 pmBelieve it when I see it.
I hope and pray that I am wrong, but my faith in these two politicians is limited at best due to THEIR own actions.
I do have to note the obvious that Pelosi chose “april fools” day as the target date.

June 28th, 2007 at 11:06 pmWhy next April, why not next month? DONT YOU CARE FOR THE TROOPS, NANCY?
The dems are what they have always been, weak and weaker. They might as well try to pass a bill that outlaws the military itself, its what they really want anyway.
June 28th, 2007 at 11:10 pmMan,
No one wants to outlaw the military. We want to outlaw illegal invasions of countries that pose no threat to us. To end a war that we can not win.
June 28th, 2007 at 11:14 pmSimply put the war is about resources (oil and location) so that is why they keep putting this off and make it appear to be a morals issue (how can we leave them like that). The only way to end this is to do what I suggested for starters. Provided you realize that our entire way of life depends on that oil and in the balance there is much death. This is why congress gave Bush war powers and plenty is riding on it.
June 28th, 2007 at 11:16 pmSorry folk’s I don’t have the heart to comment on all this repeated folly…I will from now on work in the trenches with the mailer’s and marcher’s…Had enough of the evil republican’s getting away with mass murder and distruction and had enough of the spinless enabeling dem’s to chicken shit to stand up and do what is right for us and the people of the world….

June 28th, 2007 at 11:26 pmi do have a question – can’t one of these congress people or pelosi or somebody organise a legal national vote in the face of such strong opposition to this bloodshed in iraq – kind of like a presidential election but ask every american who is able to vote whether they want to stop or continue the war? – or is that too far out of reach of the people?
Nancy and Harry…you better do something. I’m ready to vote all new dems in the primarys. Time for a change of the guard.
June 28th, 2007 at 11:34 pmHey pod, the surge has already failed and we have lost, at least according to Reid. With that sort of sentiment, why does he set the withdrawal date for next year?
My GAWD, dont the dems care for the troops, leaving them to fight in a surge and a war that is already lost? What is wrong with you people? (hysterical ranting and foot-stomping)

The Authorization for Use of Military Force (”AUMF”) (Public law 107-40) was a joint resolution passed by the United States Congress on September 18, 2001, authorizing the use of United States Armed Forces against those responsible for the attacks on September 11, 2001. The authorization granted the President the authority to use all “necessary and appropriate force” against those whom he determined “planned, authorized, committed, or aided” the September 11th attacks, or who harbored said persons or groups. The AUMF was signed by President George W. Bush on September 18, 2001.

June 28th, 2007 at 11:50 pmHmmm, it would appear that the Afghanistan action was legal,
So it isnt about the innocent children dying or the brave soldiers being killed, its about legality?

June 29th, 2007 at 12:14 amWow, I know this is in response to their extremely low poll numbers and corresponding recent legislative failures, but those two just don’t know when to quit when they are behind.
Hill’reh and Raum Emanuel’s worst fear has been realized. Instead of the public just hating the Republicans as the anti-incumbant wave crests, thanks to Reid and Pelosi, the public now hates Democrats as much or (in the case of Pelosi and Reid) more. Recent polls show the public clamoring for 3rd party candidates that will get things done in Washington.
For Pelosi and Reid to push for this before Petraeus has had a chance to report on his work in Iraq, shows how desparate they are to revive their poll numbers, especially among their own constituents.
I saw the potential for this type of fiasco, but couldn’t have wished it to be going so badly for them. After watching Bubba Clinton, who, through Dick Morris, had such a commanding grasp of the political environment in any / every situation, it is just stunning to see how tone deaf Pelosi / Reid are in the midst of their political machinations.

My husband and I went on a trip to Dublin several years ago. We were down in the Temple Bar area and we went into several pubs. It just so happened Scotland was in town for a soccer match and the pubs were all filled to the brim with drunk Scots in kilts (singing “Doe, a deer, a female dear” from The Sound of Music at the top of their lungs..). Anyway, while sipping on my Guinness, this guy in front of me suddenly bent over and flipped his skirt over his head. I was dumbstruck.. Then the guy next to him did the same.

June 29th, 2007 at 12:53 amSince we are told that the United States is in Iraq to promote democracy for their people, why don’t we support the scheduling of another nationwide vote? The United States would need to pledge to the world community to abide by the outcome. The U. S. government could provide the funding for this vote (on paper ballots that could be re-counted, if necessary). A truly independent international organization could carry out the election, along with tabulating and reporting the results. There would be one question on the ballot — Should the United States remain in Iraq or leave? If our government is truly supporting self-determination for the Iraqi people they should have no misgivings about abiding by their wishes. Why isn’t someone in Washington, D.C. placing pressure on elected officials to promote such an initiative?
June 29th, 2007 at 12:53 amMy fantasy is for Bush and Cheney to marched out the front entry of the White House in handcuffs and taken straight to jail. I want the press notified first so the entire press corps is there to videotape the entire event.

Er, not this time! ;-) Sorry, sometimes my serious side gets tired of being suppressed.
June 29th, 2007 at 12:54 amCall Bush and demand he go in.
We overthrew the legitimate government of Afghanistan, yet the dems are proclaiming that as a justifiable war for some reason. Why?
Comment by Man
Bush doesn’t listen to us. He only listens to you neocon that voted for him.
Bush was president and the congress was Republican when we “overthrew the legitimate government” of Afghanistan. If it was illegal I guess it should be added to the articles of impeachment.
June 29th, 2007 at 12:55 amJake:
Navy, ‘85 to ‘92, gunners mate, USS Vincennes and USS Flint. (mostly).
My old man was in Korea, Marine. Later he was a DI at LeJeune.
Ill defer to you.
June 29th, 2007 at 12:57 amChuckie Schumer’s an idiot. Bush is NEVER going to resign.
Comment by Jake
Who said “resign”?
June 29th, 2007 at 12:58 amWayne A. Schneider,
I see your point.
Most Muslims are good but their leaders and ideology calls for conquering others.
That’s why I don’t want them here.
Look at the mess they’ve created in Europe?
Now France is anti-Muslim!
There must be a reason for that!
As for Iran why is there a post on TP about the riots?
June 29th, 2007 at 12:58 amYet you ignore the opinions of the *majority* of the Americans
The majority of Americans were heard loud and clear this last week, why havent they roused themselves to protest as vociferously against this war?
Because we want to win, not run like a scalded dog. Change doesnt mean tuck tail, it means WIN.
June 29th, 2007 at 1:00 amIf anyone NOT on the Ignore List wants to discuss anything, let me know.

Sure Jake, we were all in the Army during the Korean War. I’ll show you my proof if you show me yours.
June 29th, 2007 at 1:01 amI’m all for stopping the genocide in Darfur, and there was no Genocide in Iraq,
Then we agree on Darfur.
You must have taken an english course from Maddy Albright, “what exactly is the definition of genocide?” (spoken as Rwandans were busy butchering one another).
A million+ dead Iraqis since Hussein took power, dead at his hand. Feel free to parse it, if it isnt genocide then I cant help you.
June 29th, 2007 at 1:05 amBecause we want to win, not run like a scalded dog. Change doesnt mean tuck tail, it means WIN.
Comment by Man
Win what. I though we’d already won once. Remember “Mission Accomplished”. How will we know when we’ve won? Remember they already held “democratic” elections. What would be the determination that we had in fact won. Maybe if the people knew any of these answers they’d have been more supportive.
June 29th, 2007 at 1:05 amNo need to defer, Man. You are doing a bang up job.

I know I was!
Yep, I can plagarize a military record as well as old Jake.

Really? You have a link for a million+ dead?
June 29th, 2007 at 1:07 amOh and Jake, about your ignore list. Maybe Man can put it where we’d all like you to stick it.
June 29th, 2007 at 1:09 amSimply put the war is about resources (oil and location) so that is why they keep putting this off and make it appear to be a morals issue (how can we leave them like that). The only way to end this is to do what I suggested for starters. Provided you realize that our entire way of life depends on that oil and in the balance there is much death. This is why congress gave Bush war powers and plenty is riding on it.
Comment by freedomrings — June 28, 2007 @ 11:16 pm
I don’t agree with most of what you say, but on this, I think you hit the nail on the head. As much as I dislike Bush and Cheney, at least they both are Peak Oil aware. Bush reacted with not only a war with Iraq, but a huge spread in Northern Paraguay while Cheney chose Dubai. They’re bailing out.

June 29th, 2007 at 1:11 amJake:
As you can see, the attacks have already started about your (and presumably Ill get hit too) military service, even though we were just exchanging a little information. For some reason the majority of liberal posters here feel compelled to ridicule vets and claim we’re fraudulent.
Im not sure why that is, jealously maybe, or regret that they didnt have the chutzpah to serve themselves.

How many dead at Bush’s hands? It certainly is approaching your number, and it’s taken George a lot less time to run up his numbers. Of course, w/out Ronnie Reagan and Dick and Rummy’s help, and yes, Jimmy Carter’s, Saddam would have never had those WMDs, would he?
Help clarify your thinking, son?

June 29th, 2007 at 1:18 amHey Jake, Ill see you around. I stayed up waaaaay too late tonight and its midnight in Minnesota. Have to do that work thing tomorrow and scattering these libs like chaff has worn me out.
What is “work” the liberals ask? Catch me tomorrow and Ill explain it to you.

Riiiight, yet MORE clever word play from the Right Wing. Yes, those would be the CHEMICAL WEAPONS Reagan gave him, ya know, the ones destroyed whilst the UN was watching. The ones HE NO LONGER HAD when Brusch decided to invade.
Oh wait, they did find some mustrad gas shells, right next to the ketchup and relish shells – the Condiments of Mass Destruction.

Those words could come back to bite them. Are they going thru with this? I’m not sure but with all the crap coming out about Dick Cheney, I think it is possible that they are making their move.
If it doesn’t work, then I think it is the end of this American Democracy as we know it, unless Republicans and Democrats alike come together to stop this dictatorial pair.

Man, the majority of Americans are becoming aware that the OCCUPATION–not WAR in Iraq–is a BFL (Big Fat Lie). It’s the corporate/media/conservatives/Beltway/lapdogs who are the scalded dogs, scurving about for the winning spin-cliché to bail sorry asses out of the corner of their own making—INCLUDING YOURSELF.

The Winner
(Shel Silverstein)
The hulk of a man with a beer in his hand looked like a drunk old fool,
And I knew that if I hit him right, I could knock him off that stool.
But everybody said, “Watch out — that’s Tiger Man McCool.
He’s had a whole lot of fights, and he always come out the winner.
Yeah, he’s a winner.”
But I’d had myself about five too many, and I walked up tall and proud,
I faced his back and I faced the fact that he’d never stooped or bowed.
I said, “Tiger Man, you’re a pussycat,” and a hush fell on the crowd,
I said, “Let’s you and me go outside and see who’s the winner”………..
Well, he gripped the bar with one big hairy hand and he braced against the
wall,
He slowly looked up from his beer — my God, that man was tall.
He said, “Boy, I see you’re a scrapper, so just before you fall,
I’m gonna tell you just a little what a means to be a winner.”

I take it the Surge was a stoopid idea
June 29th, 2007 at 7:04 am#13 Hi Sharon! After reading the night’s posts, I must concur with your comments in every instance. I’m pretty nauseated by the continued antics of this Congress (and I’m definitely not alone by virtue of their lousy numbers). They can talk about timetables until the cows come home and it all sounds good unless/until one realizes that the “horse is already out of the barn” and timetables will go nowhere.
THE ONLY card they held was the pursestrings and they blew it miserably. They postured initially without any true backbone and then bent over to King George when he whimpered and simpered. Now THIS is not in keeping with the mandate of the MidTerms so they failed abysmally in their first real task.
Anything they attempt to do now will be moot. They’ve become a “lameduck Congress” catering to a “lameduck president” at the expense of the people and the dissolution of this democracy.
Effectively, the Dems have now earned their star of “complicity” as well as the Republicans so they are absolutely no different. This is precisely why so many people are registering as Independent.
They’ve “had it” totally with the morons in Congress, the most corrupt administration ever in the history of the country, and the conversation of our Constitution into toilet paper. It’s been trampled beyond recognition; now they are wiping their a$$es with it….very sad state of affairs and the demise of this democracy.
June 29th, 2007 at 7:11 amAnd it sounds like our “military troll named Man” was probably a draft dodger in his youth because he apparently knows nothing about the military.
June 29th, 2007 at 7:13 amHaving background in linguistics helps make these styles crystal clear.
June 29th, 2007 at 7:19 amDemocrats ‘Timetable’ to withdraw by next spring….
Democrats look like losers again.
That’s almost a year from now,and that is if Bush and Cheney allow it to happen.
Democrats won in November 2006 on the issue of ‘ending this war’..So far they keep supporting Bush’s plans and write checks.
June 29th, 2007 at 7:19 amPelosi said…no more ‘blank’ checks.. whom is she kidding..!!
How about a coordinated effort to impeach Cheney?
Solve two problems at once.
June 29th, 2007 at 7:52 amListening to ‘Hooked on Phonics’â„¢ isnt a background in linguistics, you preemie.
Liboners wouldnt know military if they were walking through the barracks at RTC Great Lakes.
June 29th, 2007 at 8:01 am#166 – Neo-Con-victs refuse to serve in the military because they are all cheese-eating surrender monkey cowards.
It’s true! Did KKKarl Rove serve? NO! Did VPres. Cheney serve? NO!
Pres. Bush’s daddy go the then-Democratic Texas Speaker of the House to get “Dubya” a spot on the Air National Guard that he did not deserve, and he couldn’t be bothered with completing his entire service with honor!
I guess when you’re snorting your way through life, honor has nothing to do with you.
June 29th, 2007 at 8:30 amWhat has happened to the proposal to revoke the Iraq “war” resolution? Authorization was related to 9-11, not Iraq, so let’s end it this way.
June 29th, 2007 at 8:53 amif they want to force votes that’s fine… they can hold votes, but they can’t control how people vote… until they get some Republicants to join them, this is all just treading water…
June 29th, 2007 at 9:21 am…man aka rachel, accidentally posted his famous “anyone NOT on my ignore list” in the London ‘car bomb’ thread…
June 29th, 2007 at 9:46 amAnd then Nancy will give Dumbya the good ahead to invade Iran.
She is an AIPAC whore, just like everyone else except Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul.
June 29th, 2007 at 11:11 amImpeach Pelosi and Reid first!
They do NOT represent the interest and voices of the Democrat Party.
Then after the Democrats get new leaders this year, then we can go after cheney and bush.
These so called “leaders” have failed us. They have failed our country. It’s time for them to step aside because all they do is stupid little speeches and “play nice”.
Kick them out of leadership position with the Democrat party since they are way over their heads!
June 29th, 2007 at 3:09 pmGee, I hope they don’t raise the bar “to high” again and end up cow-tailing to Chimpy
Worthless…. just like 98% of Capitol Hill
June 29th, 2007 at 3:43 pmOne more rant:
Pisses me off how Pelosi was all “IMPEACH IMPEACH IMPEACH” and “OUT OF IRAQ NOW” when her part was fighting for control of congress. Now that she has gotten the position she wanted she immediately took both those KEY issues off the table.
How long do we have to wait for a politician to come along that will fight the fight that got them there, once they are there and now have something to lose?
Springsteen said it best…
“Well you’re born with nothing and better off living that way. ‘Cuz as soon as you got something, somebody comes and tries to take it away”
