Rumsfeld v. Bartlett.

By Faiz Shakir on Jun 28th, 2007 at 7:11 pm

Rumsfeld v. Bartlett.

Donald Rumsfeld, claiming he took the phrase “mission accomplished” out of a draft of President Bush’s speech:

“I took ‘Mission Accomplished’ out,” Rumsfeld said. “I was in Baghdad and I was given a draft of that thing and I just died. And I said, it’s too inclusive. And I fixed it and sent it back. They fixed the speech but not the sign.”

But Dan Bartlett says Rumsfeld is lying:

There was a comment Rumsfeld made in one of those books where he claimed that he took the phrase mission accomplished out of the speech itself but that he couldn’t get the banner pulled down. That’s just wrong. I went back and looked at every draft of the speech. That phrase was never in it.

How do we decide who’s lying here?

    Hmmmm….

  2. JG says:

    Hi Zooey.
It will be funny to see who cannot out-lie or out-spin each other..

  3. leftcoast says:

There’s a reason Rumsfeld has not been heard from for such a long time. His career and recollections are being reviewed by the WH as a vetting process to extricate the WH from going to prison.

Hi Guys! It matters little who the author was…the sick fact is that Bush is the one responsible for saying it….

I guess we should just sit back and enjoy the show!

The single most important fact they are trying to divert us from.

  7. MsJoanne says:

Zooey, it’s easy…if their mouths are moving, they are lying. Does it really matter what they are saying?

  8. dixie blood says:

Imagine that…Donald (Duck and Run) Rumsfeld is a worthless, c*cksucking, lyin’ piece of sh!t.

Damn. This is news to me….

  9. JG says:

I read a news article not too long ago that talked about Rumsfeld saying he had set up a transistion office down the hall at the Pentagon or the DoD or somewhere nearby… It sure sounded like he was still trying to somehow keep his finger in the pie.. (Wish I could find the link..)

Sometimes you have to give a speech with the text you’re given, not the text you wish you had.

The United States of America started it’s downward spiral the day the Supreme Court appionted the thugs of the crime family to the White House. Ever since that day, the constitution has been destroyed, little by little and the thugs continue to throw gasoline on that fire. The Republic Party destroyed our nation.

The worm turns ~ I’m old enough to recall the fall of Nixon and this current ‘tit for tat’ chat between Rumsfeld & Bartlett sounds like history repeating itself (read: the downfall of gwb is on a roll).
As for Rumsfeld ‘transition’ office in Pentagon raising eyebrows

Okay, let me see if I can believe either of them. Rumsfeld claims that from all the way over in Baghdad, Iraq, he was able to get a line taken out of a presidential speech (a point which is in dispute).

The WH took a lot of criticism over the “Mission Accomplished” banner and even went so far as to claim they had nothing to do with it, that it was the sailors who put it up to signify that their mission had been accomplished. Going back to Rumsfeld, he thought it was a horrendous thing to impart (”too inclusive”, meaning what, exactly? Not exclusive” enough for their tastes?)

And yet, despite being Secretary of Defense, the highest position within our civilian-led military, that he couldn’t get them to not display the banner during the speech? Exactly how much control over the DoD did our “pal” Rumsfeld have? (I’m from NY. We use “pal” sarcastically a lot, as in, “D’ya mind not peeing on my briefcase, pal?”)

  17. kasinca says:

It takes one to know one…Dan Bartlett is a lying chimpsucker and so is Rumsfeld. They both know a lot about lying.

That’s sounds like it’s all over already!!

They are trying “tooth and nail” to destroy our democracy!! That’s true!

I still believe they can be stopped if the currently useless House leadership will put IMPEACHMENT back on the table…

Nancy Poll-Loser needs to grow a pair of ovaries and start kicking some repugniscum balls!!!

Maybe we need a new political party called “NOT LOSERS”!!!!!

    Amen to that.

  20. JG says:

Wow! Anyone else watching Olbermann? John Dean just said that he really hoped Nancy Pelosi would reconsider her views about impeaching and start with Cheney first! This was in response to the question about the article by Bruce Fein calling for Cheney’s impeachment.

Maybe this will gather steam. I wish she would listen.

    IMPEACH!!! NOW!!

So basically if you wrote, “I am a ring tailed doofus.” on a piece of paper Chimpy would just say it. He doesn’t even review his speeches before he reads the. So he really is just the puppet but whose hand is really up his ass? I bet it’s daddy.

  23. War4Sale says:

    Hmm…which Republican is lying?

It would seem that one of them must be telling truth and yet, being Republicans, we know that’s a manifest impossibility!

This is like one of Zeno’s paradoxes.

You’re thinking of the lying Cretan, not Zeno.

  25. War4Sale says:

    Ah, you are right.

So the questions then become, which of these lying cretans is telling the truth and will the sheer improbability of the act rip a whole in the space time continuum?!

Or the Island of Knights and Knaves. Knights always tell the truth and Knaves always lie. Spies, a third type of inhabitant, sometimes lie and sometimes tell the truth. So what are Rumsfeld and Bartlett?

As Prof Raymond Smullyan would point out:

Since we’ve caught each of them in lies before, neither one can be a Knight. Can they both be Knaves? Well, two Knaves cannot contradict each other, so they can’t both be Knaves. That means that at least one of them is a Spy.

It cannot be determined which of them, of not both, is a Spy.

  27. George says:

    Cool!

    Dueling liars.

I wonder who will come out on top.

I just suggested on another thread that we ought to contact Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid and bring John Dean’s words to their attention.

Send Nancy Pelosi an e-mail and tell her to put impeachment on the table http://speaker.gov/contact/. I do this pretty much every day. I’m sure I am in her kill-file by now, but it makes me feel better to do it. At least I’m doing something other than just complaining.

I also send weekly e-mails to my two senators and congresswoman.
