Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) and 36 of his House colleagues called for a hearing into the role Dick Cheney played in the 2002 die-off of about 70,000 salmon near the California-Oregon border. The letter wrote, “Did in fact the vice president of the United States put pressure on midlevel bureaucrats to alter the science and circumvent the law in order to gain political votes for his re-election or the election of other people in Oregon?”

“A massive car bomb exploded at a street-side bus depot during Baghdad’s Thursday morning rush hour, killing at least 22 people and wounding more than 40 others in a tremendous explosion that set fire to scores of vehicles.” Elsewhere, 20 headless bodies were found “on the banks of the Tigris River.”

“U.S. commanders plan a summer of stepped-up offensives against Al Qaeda in Iraq as they tailor strategy to their expectation that Congress soon will impose a timeline for drawing down U.S. forces here.”

In a new Pew poll, people in countries “as diverse as Canada, Peru, Ukraine, China and India” identified environmental problems such as global warming as “the leading threat the world faces…outranking concerns about nuclear weapons, ethnic hatred and AIDS.”

“[A] look at emergency rooms around the nation shows that wait times — and their health consequences — are increasing everywhere. The problem isn’t confined to hospitals that serve mostly the uninsured.” Affluent areas are “seeing the same problems they’re seeing in the urban areas,” one doctor said.

“Three former leaders of Exodus International, often described as the nation’s largest ex-gay ministry, publicly apologized Wednesday for the harm they said their efforts had caused many gays and lesbians who believed the group’s message that sexual orientation could be changed through prayer.”

2.2 million: Number of people currently imprisoned in the United States. “Prisons and jails added more than 42,000 inmates last year, the largest increase since 2000.”

A survey of Labor Dept. employees, thought to be “the first step by the Bush administration to revise the rules to restrict access to family leave,” ended up finding “a broad consensus that family and medical leave is good for workers and their families, is in the public interest and is good workplace policy.”

The American bald eagle, revered and reviled over more than two centuries, today will be officially declared safe from extinction in the lower 48 states,” and removed from the Endangered Species list.

And finally: Sen. Pat Leahy (D-VT) loves Batman. He will “appear in the upcoming installment of the big-screen Batman franchise, ‘The Dark Night,’ slated to be released in 2008.” According to Roll Call, Leahy told his barber on Wednesday that “he hadn’t had a trim in a while, since he had let his hair grow out for the role. The Senator also mentioned a recent all-night filming session that went on ‘too damn long.’”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

    From the L.A. Times article:

Exodus’ president, Alan Chambers, reached by phone at the meeting in Irvine, said he disagreed with its critics, adding that its methods have helped many people, including him. “Exodus is here for people who want an alternative to homosexuality,” Chambers said. “There are THOUSANDS of people like me who have overcome this. I think there’s room for more than one opinion on this subject, and giving people options isn’t dangerous.”

    Impeach him
By: Steve Benen on Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Bruce Fein, the associate deputy attorney general under Reagan, has apparently seen enough.

“In grasping and exercising presidential powers, Cheney has dulled political accountability and concocted theories for evading the law and Constitution that would have embarrassed King George III. The most recent invention we know of is the vice president’s insistence that an executive order governing the handling of classified information in the executive branch does not reach his office because he also serves as president of the Senate. In other words, the vice president is a unique legislative-executive creature standing above and beyond the Constitution. The House judiciary committee should commence an impeachment inquiry. As Alexander Hamilton advised in the Federalist Papers, an impeachable offense is a political crime against the nation. Cheney’s multiple crimes against the Constitution clearly qualify.

In the end, President Bush regularly is unable to explain or defend the policies of his own administration, and that is because the heavy intellectual labor has been performed in the office of the vice president. Cheney is impeachable for his overweening power and his sneering contempt of the Constitution and the rule of law.

With a 67-vote threshold in the Senate, impeachment is a long-shot, but Fein, a conservative Republican, makes a very compelling case. – from Crooks and Liars

FALLUJAH – Strict curfew and tight security measures have brought difficult living conditions and heightened tempers to residents of this besieged city.

The siege in this city located 40 mi. west of Baghdad has entered its second month. There is little sign of any international attention to the plight of the city. Fallujah, which is largely sympathetic to the Iraqi resistance, was assaulted twice by the U.S. military in 2004.

“U.S. snipers on rooftops are enjoying themselves watching us walk around to find a bite of food for our families,” 55-year-old Hajji Mahmood told IPS. “They laugh at us and call us names. They should know Fallujah is still the same city that kicked them away three years ago.”

This is the Bush Crime Family’s latest propaganda campaign. Identify everyone who kills people in Iraq as Al Qaeda. Unfortunately the “liberal” MSM is going along with this new propaganda campaign.

    War for Oil

The frantic efforts of the US and British governments to persuade Iraq to sign over its oil to Western companies on terms wildly unfavourable to Iraq, happily continue to run into the sands. But it is instructive to those who still try to argue this whole war wasn’t about oil.
    http://www.accuracy.org:80/newsrelease.php?articleId=1511

Meanwhile, the major oil companies have no desire to step into the bloodbath yet anyway. They are making truly unbelievable profits from the high oil and gas prices the war has engendered.

In the past few weeks, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte and the chief U.S. commander in the Mideast, Admiral William Fallon, have all traveled to Baghdad to press Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki to pass a controversial oil law.

Five Nobel Peace Prize laureates have just released a statement against the U.S. pressure on the Iraqi government.

The Laureates’ statement is as follows: “In support of the people of Iraq, we the undersigned Nobel Peace Prize Laureates state our opposition to the Iraq Oil Law. We also oppose the decision of the United States government to require that the Iraq government pass the Oil Law as a condition of continued reconstruction aid in legislation passed on May 24, 2007. A law with the potential to so radically transform the basic economic security of the people of Iraq should not be forced on Iraq while it is under occupation and in such a weak negotiating position vis-à-vis both the U.S. government and foreign oil corporations. The Iraq Oil Law could benefit foreign oil companies at the expense of the Iraqi people, deny the Iraqi people economic security, create greater instability, and move the country further away from peace. The U.S. government should leave the matter of how Iraq will address the future of its oil system to the Iraqi people to be dealt with at a time when they are free from occupation and more able to engage in truly democratic decision-making. It is immoral and illegal to use war and invasion as mechanisms for robbing a people of their vital natural resources.”

U.S. House Passes Bill Affirming Global Warming Exists

WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives Wednesday, aiming to put an end to the debate over whether global warming is actually occurring, passed legislation recognizing the “reality” of climate change and providing money to work on the problem.

By a vote of 272-155, the House approved an environmental funding bill for the fiscal year starting Oct. 1 that would increase federal investments in basic research on climate change and establish a new commission to review scientific questions that need to be addressed.

The White House has threatened a veto of the $27.6 billion bill because its overall spending would exceed President Bush’s request by about $2 billion. The Senate has not yet debated the bill.

I no longer think that ‘not enough votes’ is a valid excuse. Impeach him. No credible police, DA or judge would, after all, not arrest. indict or hold a trial for someone based on what they thought the jury would decide…

It’s simply become a matter of applying appropriate consequences to his actions, and showing him that he does not have a free pass.

The act alone of being Impeached might just be enough at this point to stop the serial killer from finding another victim, so to speak…

What a bunch of whiners. Even at $3.00/gal the US pays less than most of the rest of the world for gasoline not to mention all the other stuff oil is used to make. What on earth gives you crybabies the idea that the oil that lies below the sands of some of the most desolate places on earth belongs to YOU for NOTHING? $70 a barrel? At some point it will be cost effective enough to look for American oil again. $70/bbl = about $1.28 a gallon. The rest of the cost is the cost for shipping, refining into gasoline, state and federal taxes and, of course, PROFIT for the oil companies. In order to boost their profits, of course, all they have to do is choke the supply a little. They do that by closing refineries for “maintenance” and other reasons.

As for OPEC, if you were managing a rapidly disappearing resource, the ONLY resource you have other than silicon in the form of SAND, what would YOU do? There won’t be an OPEC in another hundred years or so because there won’t be any more oil. That’s why the new Dubai was created. One profitable thing you can do with sand is make beaches and attract tourists and the rich people of the world.

Maybe, maybe not. I used to gag when I tried to eat an apple, now I enjoy them. The same goes for several other foods, such as turkey and ham. And I’m beginning to enjoy spinach and potatoes also.

Although anything competing with a cold beer on a hot day is a tall order.

A$$hole Mitt Romney supports animal torture too:

    Romney’s Cruel Canine Vacation

    http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1638065,00.html?cnn=yes

The incident: dog excrement found on the roof and windows of the Romney station wagon. How it got there: Romney strapped a dog carrier — with the family dog Seamus, an Irish Setter, in it — to the roof of the family station wagon for a twelve hour drive from Boston to Ontario, which the family apparently completed, despite Seamus’s rather visceral protest.

Massachusetts’s animal cruelty laws specifically prohibit anyone from carrying an animal “in or upon a vehicle, or otherwise, in an unnecessarily cruel or inhuman manner or in a way and manner which might endanger the animal carried thereon.” An officer for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals responded to a description of the situation saying “it’s definitely something I’d want to check out.” The officer, Nadia Branca, declined to give a definitive opinion on whether Romney broke the law but did note that it’s against state law to have a dog in an open bed of a pick-up truck, and “if the dog was being carried in a way that endangers it, that would be illegal.” And while it appears that the statute of limitations has probably passed, Stacey Wolf, attorney and legislative director for the ASPCA, said “even if it turns out to not be against the law at the time, in the district, we’d hope that people would use common sense…Any manner of transporting a dog that places the animal in serious danger is something that we’d think is inappropriate…I can’t speak to the accuracy of the case, but it raises concerns about the judgment used in this particular situation.”

2.2 million: Number of people currently imprisoned in the United States. “Prisons and jails added more than 42,000 inmates last year, the largest increase since 2000.”

How many of those 42,000 were convicted repubs and how much more will the numbers go up when the real tidal wave hits?

    Outsourcing Jobs Inside America
    Thursday 28th of June 2007
    by Jay Randal

One of the hidden poison pills inside immigration bill would allow corporations to hire more guest workers from India to work for less pay than US laborers get.

Outsourcing of jobs to other countries is changing to bring the foreign workers to the US instead, to replace higher paid American workers, so this is a conspiracy.

Good well paying jobs for American citizens are ending/vanishing, as more employment opportunities are given to foreigners, so CEOs are screwing our nation.

At the same time massive hordes of migrant workers are flooding across the Mexican border to snatch any jobs available for unskilled laborers for cheap wages.

The American dream is coming to an end for average common citizens, as exploitation of foreign laborers increases daily, and Americans lose their employment.

How long before the United States turns into a barrio of poverty and fortified enclaves for the wealthy elite? Will the US become like Mexico or more like Haiti?

    RX2,
Fair warning. I shoot poachers! I’m a sharpshooter certified by the USMC and I will not hesitate to put a round in your red ass if I ever see you or anyone else hunting Bald Eagles.

Your statement is indicative of Cons in general; invade, shoot, bully your way into something while being too chickenshit to stand up & serve.

MN has had resounding success in the Bald Eagle restoration process, & no Neoturd is going to screw that up.

By the way, it’s tourist season in MN…I have a license and will use it.

Funny -the very same thought crossed my mind as well.

On topic, it was very courageous for the former leaders of that Exodus group to publicly express their regret and share their experiences. They were honest with themselves and others when they decided to accept reality and learn to live with it.

Unlike the self-deluded trolls in this board who’d rather cling on to their alternate version of reality.

Oh, and Daryll, really -come out already. It’s ok if you’re gay. Stop hating yourself.
