Voinovich Lashes Out At Hannity: ‘You’re Not Going To Intimidate Me,’ Then Hangs Up

Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS) said recently that “talk radio is running America” and that “we have to deal with that problem.” Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said “hate radio” has hijacked the political discourse with its “xenophobic, anti-immigrant” rhetoric.

Yesterday, Sen. George Voinovich (R-OH) released his frustration in a “hate radio” interview with Sean Hannity. “A lot of radio programs have really got out there and fired this thing up,” Voinovich said of the immigration debate. “And so people are really hot about it. And I’m getting calls from people that basically are intimidating me.” Voinovich told Hannity:

I’ve had people back home because of programs like yours said to me if you vote for this bill, it’s the end of your political career. I just want you to know and I want everybody else to know that you do not intimidate George Voinovich.

Fed up with Hannity’s efforts to turn the interview into a right-wing commentary, Voinovich lashed out, “I really don’t think it’s worthy to talk to you right now because you’ve got your mind made up.” Hannity then turned on Voinovich, telling him, “You’re running away because you can’t answer a simple question. … Oh, so I’m irrational because I disagree with you? You’re a mighty senator, ok I get it.” Voinovich then hung up.

Listen to the interview:

UPDATE: The right is outraged over Voinovich. Hot Air says he humiliated himself. KLo writes, “At least he didn’t cry.” Radio Equalizer asks, “How did these elected officials get so out of touch with reality?” And FrontPage calls him “Senator Embarrassment.”

Actually, Mr. Voinovich, these people will give you hell regardless of talk radio, simply because they oppose amnesty.

I never had to turn on the radio to determine that amnesty is a sham practice in the United States of America.

Depends on whether they're actually reporting the truth or warping it to fit their ideological agenda.

For Beck, Boortz, et al it seems that anything short of summary execution of illegal immigrants is "amnesty". Funny how their definition doesn't match any in the dictionary...

Interesting to see Republicans now become the targets of conservative hate radio and hate websites (Michelle Malkindinejad, et al). They all thought it was great for past decade, they all fall over themselves to praise she of the black cocktail dress, they think free speech is great when the target is a Democrat.

I think we're about to see a real shakeup in the GOP. People are sick of what it's become.

    Amnesty:

a period during which offenders are exempt from punishment

The offenders of course being people that came here illegally and live here illegally. Excempt from punishment is only the beginning, the bill gave them the right to citizenship on top of forgetting about their crimes.

It is Sean Hannity's show. What in the world did George Voinovich think was going to happen to him?

  55. David Shannon Says:

It's interesting to see how a conservative responds when hit with the same tactics that these talk jocks usually use against liberals. It's like there was a flash of light and -- all of a sudden -- Voinovich saw for the first time that talk radio tactics aren't about getting to the truth, they're just about making the other person look bad.

What tactics? Well, the "bogus study gambit" for one. Hannity ambushes Voinovich with a Heritage Foundation study, but there are other studies (like from CBO) that show an opposite result. And the "have you read the whole bill gambit." Hey, none of these guys ever read the whole bill. They certainly didn't read the Patriot Act. Many bills passed by the Republicans over the last few years were intentionally withheld until minutes before the vote, but I didn't hear Hannity complaining about that. Now, of course, it's a sin.

Who knows? If Hannity keeps hitting Republicans with his usual tactics, maybe he'll create some votes for the Fairness Doctrine.

From the Rasmussen reports, and this is from June 8. And the bill's only become more unpopular since then.

The last Rasmussen Reports national telephone poll found that just 23% of Americans supported the legislation... There is no mystery to why the public opposed the bill. In the minds of most Americans, immigration reform means reducing illegal immigration and enforcing the border. Only 16% believed the Senate bill would accomplish that goal... Rasmussen Reports polling found that 72% of Americans believe it’s Very Important to reduce illegal immigration and enforce the borders. Just 29% said it was Very Important to legalize the status of those illegally living in the country today... With all the polling data in the world today, how could they have failed to see this coming? While Rasmussen Reports was the only public polling firm to directly ask about support or opposition to the Senate bill, other polling data such as a recent CBS News/New York Times survey provided plenty of warning signs. Besides, the nation’s politicians purchase plenty of private polling data that should have given them a hint.

    (Full report below.)

    Any other questions, freak?

Why the Senate Immigration Bill Failed

    Friday, June 08, 2007

Elite newspapers and countless bloggers are writing their own explanations of why the compromise immigration legislation failed last night. Most of the write-ups discuss legislative tactics, an amendment offered by Senator Byron Dorgan (D), or some particular provision of the bill dealing with amnesty or guest workers.

The reality is much simpler and has nothing to do with legislative tactics. The immigration bill failed because a broad cross-section of the American people are opposed to it. Republicans, Democrats, and unaffiliated voters are opposed. Men are opposed. So are women. The young don’t like it; neither do the no-longer-young. White Americans are opposed. Americans of color are opposed.

The last Rasmussen Reports national telephone poll found that just 23% of Americans supported the legislation. When a bill has less popular support than the War in Iraq, it deserves to be defeated.

There is no mystery to why the public opposed the bill. In the minds of most Americans, immigration reform means reducing illegal immigration and enforcing the border. Only 16% believed the Senate bill would accomplish that goal.

It wasn’t amnesty or guest-worker programs or paths to citizenship that doomed the bill. Each of those provisions made it more difficult for some segments of the population to accept. However, most voters were willing to accept them as part of a true compromise that accomplished the primary goal of reducing illegal immigration.

The key to winning voter support was to accomplish that primary goal.

The Senators missed that point and that’s where the mystery resides in analyzing why this bill failed. It’s not unusual for political leaders to be out of touch with their constituents, but rarely this out of touch. How could something this unpopular with voters get so close to passage in a legislative body that is supposed to represent them?

From the beginning, the Senate approached the issue with top priority of addressing the legal status of the illegal aliens. They addressed concerns about guest-worker programs and questions about whether family or skill level should be more important when determining who could enter the country.

All of those are important questions, but they are not the most important question. Rasmussen Reports polling found that 72% of Americans believe it’s Very Important to reduce illegal immigration and enforce the borders. Just 29% said it was Very Important to legalize the status of those illegally living in the country today.

After ignoring the main point that voters were hoping to address, Senators should not have been shocked at the public reaction. But they were.

We live in a world where most Americans believe that most Members of Congress will sell their vote for cash or a campaign contribution. Only 16% believe the legislators’ votes are not for sale. By a nearly 5-to-1 margin, voters believe that Members of Congress are more interested in their own careers and agenda rather than the public good.

In that environment, the only way for political leaders to prove they are serious about enforcing the border and reducing illegal immigration will be to do it. That’s the next logical step in the immigration debate.

There are plenty of steps that could be taken quickly with solid voter support. Some may require new laws while others may simply require enforcement of the existing laws. But, voters aren’t concerned about the specifics—they’ll support serious efforts to reduce illegal immigration. This could include imposing employer sanctions, building a barrier, adding more border patrol agents, supporting local law enforcement efforts, and more.

Once the government actually enforces the border, then the debate can begin on all other aspects of immigration reform. Then, the same politicians who were stunned by their misreading of the public on this bill will probably be stunned to learn something else—most Americans actually do favor a welcoming and open immigration policy.

The United States is a nation of immigrants. It is also a nation of laws. Voters want to honor both aspects of the national heritage. And, like good parents trying to instill values in their children, voters want their elected representatives to do the same.

I've got to say this again. I just don't know anyone (except one old man) who listens to talk radio. I asked about 15 at work and only one said they even listened to the radio (that one old man). But half of them said they read news and political articles online. I just don't think the vast majority of Americans get their news and info from radio anymore. Not since a very long time ago.

Do any of you listen to any talk radio? Or any radio for that matter. (maybe on the drive into work, but I listen to music then)

  87. Martin Gifford Says:

Australia's prime minister, John Howard, won an election on this issue. He was behind in the polls until a boat full of refugees, The Tampa, crossed into our waters. Howard said, "We decide who comes into Australia and the conditions under which they come." The voters loved it!

People become very irrational when the territorial instinct is aroused. But as Trueblue said, "We are all immigrants."

It's time to move from the conflict-ridden instinctual survival mentality of "us vs them" to the cooperative happiness mentality of "happiness for all."

Talk show hosts think that stirring up the people will bring happiness in the form of money and prestige. But money and prestige are also at the survival level - they don't bring happiness.

Let's move forward towards happiness for everyone, including illegal immigrants and talk show hosts.

  88. Mr. Bush Goes To Hell Says:

WELL-INFORMED. With FACTS to back up what comes out of his mouth.

A couple of years ago, a study was done, and it was shown that people who watch fox "news" are TWICE as likely to be misinformed on topics.

    Thanks for asking...

Sometimes during the day, if I have to drive somewhere for work, I'll listen to whatever is on the local Air America affiliate. Unfortunately, it's AM radio, which means there are about 2 minutes of content for every 15 minutes of stupid commercials.

I have to admit, Randi Rhodes gives me the creeps. She's even rude to people who are essentially agreeing with her, and treats most of the callers as if they were just barely smart enough to accept her words as pearls of wisdom. I can't listen to her.

I just had a look. Amazing! They think that Bush is too soft and not sufficiently right-wing! I didn't think that was possible - and they regularly get over 500 comments!

Reading through the comments, they seem to think that the sky is falling since 9/11. If the sky is falling, it is because of Bush's response to 9/11, not the event itself.

I don't get it. How does 3,000 deaths in New York compare to 800,000 deaths in Rwanda or 300,000 deaths in Sudan? In the big picture, and over the long-term, 9/11 wasn't an intrinsically important event. There just needed to be a level-headed professional response to capture those responsible and to stop something similar happening again.

The extreme right seem to be afraid of that America, which is armed to the gills, is going to be destroyed by 19 Islamists! Is America so weak and vulnerable? The extreme right are stuck at the territorial survival level of thinking.

(I tried to post at Little Green Footballs but the registering is closed ATM.)

  170. BrianS Says:

Great. They killed immigration reform. So we're stuck with the current system, which is NOT WORKING. Everyone starts throwing around words like "amnesty for illegals", and they kill a reasonable reform which would improve the current situation. Employers would have had a way to actually track if an employee is illegal. It would get those people out of the shadows so they can be tracked for security purposes. Right now, we have no clue which are the criminals and which are not. It would have also taken measures to secure our borders to prevent more illegals from coming here.

But most people only hear the word "amnesty" unfortunately.

Think about it. When you are able to get people ranging from Ted Kennedy to George W. Bush to actually agree on something, it's the best compromise we're going to get.

This *is* yet another example of why talk radio idiots are destroying real debate and reform in our country.

  171. hork Says:

    Just a couple of observations...

    1) Let's not get carried away here defending Voinovich. Just because a jackass decides to hang up on Sean Hannity does not make him any less of a jackass.

    2) I've seen the Fairness Doctrine mentioned in a few posts... I support bringing back the FD, but remember, since it only applies to "public airwaves" it would only affect Hannity's radio show. FNC, which is on cable, would not be affected.

    3) I'm not worried about these cable news blowhards. It's clear that the internet/blogs/etc are going to replace cable as news sources... I think cable news (and the pundit shows) are on the way out.

  172. TJM Says:

  173. EthioLib Says:

I never thought I'd see the day when Sean Hannity would sound logical than anyone in the world! Not that I agree with eitehr one, but Hannity sounded more compsed and had the facts than Voinovish. I am sorry, but Voinovich scares me in that he sounds very unstable. I am serious. Well, good for them and they have Rove to thank for this internal snipping. It looks like it backfired on them BIG time!

  174. jjjoe Says:

Amazing...a self-admitted, 40 year politician, than said "whatever that is" to the fairness doctine.....he wasn't even sure what the doctrine was!?! Also, Voinovich thinks that constituents telling him how they want him to vote is intimitation? I thought he represented those people. What a coward.....All of these incumbents should be voted out of office, because it doesn't matter what party you're affiliated with, this yahoos in Washington are too far connected from the American people and ALL of them are killing this country.

  175. SGT Higgins Says:

A SENATOR DID THIS??? Holy crap!

    With fingers in ears:
    "la-la-la-la-la I can't hear you".... *click*

  176. jlm Says:

Fairness Doctrine - by itself, won't solve the problem - you've still got Murdoch owning 39% of the media in the country - and he's the one who got the rightwing nutjobs into power - both here and his native Australia - there's one immigrant I'd like to deport!

    G. Voinovich - I'm a former Ohioan and blue as the sky - George is conservative, but not reactionary. I think he has moderated his views over the years. Or maybe it's just that the rest of his party has lost it's mind over the last 20 years, he looks more moderate

I'm with those who want to give support to any who stand up to the hate-mongers. We've got to find middle ground somehow, or I fear for the future of our country.

  177. KayT Says:

I found this clip amusing. Hannity repeatedly said that the bill was still being written, but touted the Heritage report that stated trillions of dollars in economic impact if the bill passed. How does that work?

Voinovich, to give him credit, said that he wanted to see the entire bill and weigh the options before making a decision. Seems to be a reasonable approach.

  178. Tracy Says:

    #157

I have listened to her and all she is full of emotion. It's obvious by her low command of the english language.

  179. Dave Says:

"Uh-oh…. they are starting to eat their own…"

    Everyone take seconds please.

  180. Jason Baddo Says:

Sean Hannity & marge simpson have them boss....Rupert Murdoch. Enuff said

  181. hellinabucket Says:

    Hannity's a whiney manbitch

  182. Heritage who? Says:

Hannity is puke in a suit. Adopt a senator. Voinovich is pliable on the war and on wiretaps. This is the right wing media machine pressuring dissident republicans into supporting the president. Who is this heritage foundation and what has got Hannitys knickers in such a twist? Heritage Heritage Heritage! ! !!

  183. Steve Says:

Lots of nasty comments here, debate is good but it's getting too personal.

I'd just like to say that I don't think people that break the law (by entering the US Illegally) should be given easy access citizenship.

If I as a citizen break the law, I pay the penalty. Why should it be different for someone here illegally?

That might partly explain why so many folks were against- S-1363
Stated in earlier post- according to Rasmussen report, only 23% supported the legislation.

  184. RCW2001 Says:

The Hannity/Voinovich exchange was entertaining indeed but at the end of the day...

Voinovich helped killed the immigration bill by voting 'nay' On the Cloture Motion....

I detest Hannity but....look at the Voinovich vote.

  185. Janus Says:

Just more ignorant bilge from Sean Hannutsy who, with Rush Limbaughloney, has NO academic credentials. Both are soidisant intellectuals financed by the ultra-Right, quasi-fascist arm of the Republican Party. Their appeal is to the ignorance of the Dupes upon whom the Party relies to cheer and vote against themselves by sending blatant Stooges to Congress in response to the Hannutsy-Limbaughloney style of half-truths and downright lies that whip the Dupes into a frenzy each day. We can all thank the Dupes for the Puppet squatting in the White House oafel office and the havoc he has wreaked world-wise against all things American.

  186. marco Says:

I'm from Va Beach, VA and lived in Guadalajara, Mexico for two years as a youth (aged 7 and 8 mostly) in the late 1970s when my dad attended medical school there. [-He had to learn to read and write everything in Spanish because applications to American schools were denied because the American Medical Association is basically a piece of crap organization only trying to prevent doctors' rates here in America from becoming too competitive.]

One thing I learned at a young age and that you can always be sure of about a Mexican is that his or her word is no good. They behave in peculiar ways that are hard to explain, as if they think we think they are supposed to know something we should know. They talk with a straight face and act like they're being educational and think we're going to just stand there and be swindled.

Mexicans generally are easy to swindle, and they see our country as being richer, so that automatically equates to all Americans have money in their pockets, but when they try to play their tricks on Americans they get called out. Only the really, really dumb ones are taken for anything, and it usually isn't much. But it's something to them. It satisfies them to be that way.

-I recall finding a lost dog after seeing a flyer and when I asked my so-called Mexican friend Carlos to help return the dog to the proper address, we both walked there, he did the talking to the lady plus handed the dog back, and he also took the entire 200 peso reward. (Back then it was 22.5 pesos per American dollar and I could get a 16 ounce bottle of Coke for only 2 pesos so 200 pesos was a lot.)

-Lose your luggage at the Mexican airport.....every time.

-Beggars everywhere in Mexico. I used to ask my pop to pitch in a little and he did every now and then for certain beggars, but that stopped when he pulled out a wad once and the beggar instantly turned from amputee to Olympic hopeful, behind some alley-way, yelling something Mexican and assholish.

They think they are entitled to things you and I work hard for. They'll steal your shoelaces if you give them a chance.

Anyone who crosses a border illegally is taking a risk. I see no reason whatsoever to give 12 to 20 million Mexicans anything at all. Amnesty is total paradise for these greedy bastards. Why? Because we're pushovers?

Get tough, America! Start making demands!

    -Marc T.

  187. Dennis Says:

Voinobitch can't walk and chew gum at the same time. What a cretin! Doesn't know the outcome of a key vote. Has no clue of any cost of legislation that he is voting on, and anyone that has a differing opinion than his is intimidating him. Poor cry baby voinobitch. And I thought I had a dumb Senator (failed the bar three times and didn't know the price of a gallon of milk)

  188. Jim Says:

I generally think that Hannity is scum and don't listen to a word he says. He makes some extremely valid points here and I am happy that this bill died. The costs down the road of a path to citizenship for illegals through social security, welfare, and medical care will be exponentially higher than costs of enforcement and border protection now.

Neither the Democommies and Republicanazis have an answer for America. We need to turn to an outsider like Ron Paul and return to good constitutional rule, personal social liberty, and economic freedom

  189. Ella Fent-Seid Says:

#153 - That’s because they (Democrats) don’t give a damn about border security they just wanted voters.

Security? From what? The 9/11 hijackers were in this country legally. Why isn't it occurring to you that if Bush isn't securing the borders, it's because he knows that America isn't in danger of terrorist acts by migrant and below-minimum wage Mexican workers coming into the nation?

Bush and Cheney, Republicans and Democrats know this and want low wage Mexican workers to satisfy their corporate masters. The problem for Republicans in Congress is that their idiot constituents don't get it and actually bought Bush's war on terror. Republicans in Congress are finding themselves between Iraq and a hard place - how do you get the votes of people who are too stupid to realize they've been taken for fools?

  190. null Says:

Frankly these silly "republicans" or RINOs like Hannity prove themselves to be aligned with liberals against bush in the end. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who disagrees with Bush is an America hating liberal; immigrants made this country great and there are industries here that can't make it without them. In fact, I say that we open our arms and hearts to the 10 million Iraq refugees and give them citizenship too. Who deserves it more than they do??

  191. mike Says:

What is wrong with you people? If your progressive ideals were so palatable Air America wouldn't have gone into bankruptcy or embezzled funds from a charity. Conservative talk radio garners ratings and advertisers want shows with ratings. If the sound of a bird singing got high ratings advertisers would buy the time!

I don't presume to know why people don't want to listen to Progressive (or Liberal) talk radio in numbers great enough to make the format a success. You must face the fact that when it comes to Progressive talk... no one is listening.
