Early this morning, British police “discovered an explosive device in a car laden with gasoline, nails, and gas canisters” in central London. British authorities have not said who may be responsible for the attempted attack, but Jacqui Smith, Britian’s new homeland secretary, characterized the incident as attempted “international terrorism.” The BBC noted that the timing may be significant as the incident comes as “the second anniversary of the 7 July bombings approach[es].”
Despite counterterrorism officials having “no prior intelligence information indicating” this attack might be imminent, Britain’s increased risk of “international terrorism” has long been attributed to British involvement in the war in Iraq by numerous national security experts:
Foreign Affairs Committee of the British Parliament:
“Britons are more - not less - likely to be the target of terrorist attacks as a result of the war in Iraq.” [BBC News, 2/2/2004]
Britain’s Joint Terrorist Analysis Center:
“[E]vents in Iraq are continuing to act as motivation and a focus of a range of terrorist-related activity in the UK.” [Financial Times, 7/19/2005]
Former chief of the British intelligence service MI5, Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller:
“UK foreign policy … in Iraq and Afghanistan” has inspired a “violent threat” to the UK that will persist for “more than a generation.” [The Independent, 11/11/2006]
David Cameron, leader of Britain’s Conservative Party:
“It is clear that over the last few years decisions that have been taken, the difficulties there have been in Iraq, clearly have had a wider effect” and “the threat to Britain was now greater as a result of the war [in Iraq] was ‘a statement of fact.’” [ABC News, 12/18/2006]
Dr. Jonathan Eyal, the director of international security at the Royal United Services Institute:
The “terrorist threat facing Britain from home-grown al-Qaeda agents is higher than at any time since the September 11 attacks in 2001.” He faulted the “wars in Afghanistan and Iraq” and western government’s inability to kill or capture Osama bin Laden. [The Telegraph, 2/25/2007]
The U.S. intelligence community assessed that Iraq “has become the ‘cause celebre‘ for jihadists.” The State Department has acknowledged the war in Iraq “has been used by terrorists as a rallying cry for radicalization and extremist activity that has contributed to instability in neighboring countries.” The longer the occupation in Iraq continues, the more it serves as a recruiting and propaganda tool for terrorists. Ultimately — as British experts understand — the Iraq war leads to greater insecurity around the globe.
Happenings
You’re going to be told lots of things.
You get told things every day that don’t happen.
It doesn’t seem to bother people, they don’t—
It’s printed in the press.
The world thinks all these things happen.
They never happened.
Everyone’s so eager to get the story
Before in fact the story’s there
That the world is constantly being fed
Things that haven’t happened.

June 29th, 2007 at 1:53 pmJohn Stacks,
Your beehive metaphor is faulty on two levels.
The first is a misunderstanding of the nature of bees. You can live peacefully with a beehive in your backyard if you do not bother the beehive.
The second is a misunderstanding of geography. You metaphor implies that a backyard is a place where a person should live in peace. I think you meant this as the place where people live or their country. It does not make sense for someone to eliminate a terrorist who is not in his backyard because the terrorist does not present a threat. The coalition of the willing invaded iraq under the premise that we should fight the terrorists in iraqs backyard. so they left their backyards and entered the iraq’s backyard and stirred up the beehive there. So maybe a better metaphor is to not stir up the beehives in your neighbors backyards because then you are going to cause the bees to sting both you and them. Point in case, we invaded iraq and now 3500+ americans are dead and 150,000+ iraqs are dead. Maybe americans didnt really understand the beehive and should have just left it alone?

June 29th, 2007 at 1:59 pmNah John Stack, can’t you see that using violence to solve this problem has only lead to more violence and terrorism? Thats the whole point of this post. America will never be able to take out all of the terrorists with physical force which has been demonstrated over the past 50 years. Our foreign policy is failing us. We need a new direction.
June 29th, 2007 at 2:00 pmLiberals have both extremes no doubt. I would venture to say that the rich ones inherited their money - they didn’t work for it. Actors in Holywood are like that in the way that they really didn’t work for their money either.
June 29th, 2007 at 2:00 pmI agree here. Actors are waaaaaaaaayyyyyyy over paid.
June 29th, 2007 at 2:02 pmJohn lots of liberal types work their asses off. Lots of conservitards come from rich families and don’t do shit.

Terrorists are not bees. They don’t react like bees. This is a problem that cannot be solved with platitudes, parables or fables. Unfortunately, this administration gleaned only the intelligence and predictions that would support their preordained agenda. Then they act surprised that things actually turned out the way they did.

June 29th, 2007 at 2:06 pmAnd yet, we have not had another terrorist attack in the U.S. since 9/11.
Many of the “learned” posters here may attribute this to the Bush admin. and their anti-terrorism policies. Ha!
I think it has more to do with the “terrorists” being told to “stand down”
June 29th, 2007 at 2:08 pmLet’s face it; if they wanted to, they can get in to this country, and blow themselves up in a shopping mall. So, why haven’t they?
Because their masters have not given the order. Their masters are still in place, and still in control, and will strike when they deem the time is right; say, just prior to losing the White House in 2008.
Zooey has a babe complex to her, you can tell by her words.
June 29th, 2007 at 2:08 pmI must warn you, however, that you’re going to see a lot more of these know-it-alls suddenly play stupid and inquire on both the definitions of “Islamo†and “stalinist.†It’s only one way these stupid loons seek to avoid accountability when confronted. Good luck, Texan.
Comment by CT V_1 — June 29, 2007 @ 1:52 pm
Yeah, good point. The irrefutable logic of creating a meaningless hyphenated epithet and applying it indiscriminately to anyone who objects or disagrees is totally money.
You don’t have to come up with a meaningful explanation, because those who inquire are not seeking clarification; they’re merely trying to “avoid accountability”. Accountability for what, you haven’t explained and, if pattern holds, you won’t.
So you and your troll buddies can high-five each other for scoring major points in the troll TP-equivalent of “Second Life”. — It’s not ThinkProgress, but it is a nearly life-like fantasy world, a world in which “Islamo-Stalinist” makes perfect sense and answers all questions, a world that suits your purposes and boosts your egos so cruelly battered by the larger, reality-based community.

Let’s examing the peaceful and loving nature of Christianity, shall we?
Lesson One:
The Christian Crusades 1095-1291
A series of seven medieval campaigns occuring during the time of Medieval England against Muslims.
The Christian Inquisition 1233 - 1808
Ultimately it was a lengthy period of Christians persecuting non-Christians and Jews, for the sake of conversion. In Spain alone an estimated 31,912 heretics were burned at the stake, 17,659 were burned in effigy and 291,450 made reconciliations in the Spanish Inquisition.
The Christian Salem Witch Trials 1692
Women were burned at the stake for being accused of witchcraft.

Well, you’ll get it in comment form, and if you don’t like it, eat a dick.
What a douche-bag. Oh, that’s right — t’s Mr. Pee. Incapable of civilized discourse because he either has limited language skills, limited comprehension or just a deep sense of inferiority.
The Islamo part comes from the term Islamist. An Islamist is someone who thinks that Muslims have a unique way of living and that that some how exempts them from “Western†standards, there is more to it but you’ll have to research that yourself, bucko.
The picture becomes clearer. It’s probably limited comprehension. I don’t know where you get your belief that posters on TP think that “Muslims have a unique way of living that exempts them from ‘Western’ standards”, or why (if that even made any sense) that term would apply automatically to anyone who criticized Bush’s policy in the middle east.
Actually, “bucko”, it’s you who think Muslims are so much different than the west.
A Stalinist is, of course, a form of communism.
Wow. That was illuminating. Do you even know what communism is? I doubt it, or else you wouldn’t try to inject it into a discussion like this. Granted, it’s a pathetic attempt, but it’s an attempt nonetheless.
The two terms combined denote you.
Can you point to a single thing that I have posted that leads to the conclusion that I am either an “Islamist” or a “Stalinist/communist”?
Let me help you out so you don’t embarrass yourself too badly — disagreeing with you is de facto evidence of neither.

June 29th, 2007 at 2:25 pmLesson Two:
Let’s see what the loving and peaceful things the the bible says you should do to non-Christians:
“If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. Your hand shall be the first raised to slay him; the rest of the people shall join in with you. You shall stone him to death, because he sought to lead you astray from the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. And all Israel, hearing of this, shall fear and never do such evil as this in your midst.”
–Deuteronomy 13:7-12 NAB
“They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman.”
–2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB
“Suppose a man or woman among you, in one of your towns that the LORD your God is giving you, has done evil in the sight of the LORD your God and has violated the covenant by serving other gods or by worshiping the sun, the moon, or any of the forces of heaven, which I have strictly forbidden. When you hear about it, investigate the matter thoroughly. If it is true that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, then that man or woman must be taken to the gates of the town and stoned to death.”

‘Islamo-Stalinist’ is the correct label according to your tanking ideology. You will need to accept that.
Comment by CT V_1 — June 29, 2007 @ 2:18 pm
As I asked of your teammate, please point to a single statement I have posted that supports your insistence that I am an “Islamo-Stalinist”.
Of course, if it’s a meaningless term, you won’t have to come up with any empirical backup. You guys made up the term, so you can apply it however you wish — you don’t have to adhere to any commonly accepted customs of language and word use.
Of course, simply insisting that an opponent is an “Islamo-Stalinist” without explaining why that term is appropriate could be seen as an admission that the term itself is meaningless.
June 29th, 2007 at 2:29 pmLesson Three:
Let’s examine the nurturant way that the Lord God commands Christians to treat infants:
1 Samuel 15:3 God commands the death of helpless “suckling” infants. This literally means that the children god killed were still nursing.
Psalms 135:8 & 136:10 Here god is praised for slaughtering little babies.
Psalms 137:9 Here god commands that infants should be “dashed upon the rocksâ€.

June 29th, 2007 at 2:54 pmWhat happened on 9/11/01? Ok, here’s my stab at it.
19 well educated, fanatical Saudi men defamed their religion by hijacking four airliners, crashing 2 of them into the symbols of our economic might (the World Trade Center buildings), one into the symbol of our military might (the Pentagon), and the fourth one may have been intended for the Congress or Whitehouse. Three reached their targets, the forth one was brought down by American citizens short of its goal.
(Betcha you were expecting: Those planes were military/run by CIA agents as a false flag mission. Occam’s razor, dude. In this case, the simplest explanation makes sense. However, the government had a hand in this, IMO)
Even though they had plenty of warning this was coming, a combination of incompetence (somewhat rectified by the Patriot Act, too bad the rest of the act is an Orwellian Masterpiece) and willful negligence by the Bush administration (warnings through the spring and summer leading up to 11 September that Bush ignored, including the August PDB) allowed the 19 men to carry out their mission.
Why? Well, old fashioned detective stories help here.
Do they have the means? Hell yeah! All it takes is a ‘You’ve done your job, son’, and Dubya is scott free.
Do they have the motive? Most definitely. They’ve been gunning for Iraq ever since before Clinton got in office. Bush has a personal interest in taking down Saddam. AND this is another Vietnam style war for Bush to make profit on and slam his political adversaries with. The same BS is being triped out now over the War in Iraq as was in the so-called Vietnam Conflict on both sides of the aisle.
And the opportunity? Well, here it is. September 11th. A day given on a golden platter for Bush’s admin to start a takeover that’s Nixonian in its view.
The trouble with you, CT V_1, is you trust Bush and his government, probably implicitly. Alot of us don’t. Low poll numbers reflect this. The low poll numbers of the Congress do not refute this, they support it! Most Americans in general and myself in particular do not _trust_ the President, and are dismayed at the House of Representatives and Senate that they haven’t _done_ anything about it. You try to paint opposition to your beloved Bush in tones of ‘Islamo-Stalinist’, which makes you a fool when you paint a libertarian or moderate Democrat who is anti-war with such a brush.
The people you support deserve a title. Christian Fascists (or ‘Christo-Fascists’ to save space). Fascism: The practice of making Loyalty to the State more important than loyalty to anything else. Christianity is a tool (your own people have said so!) to accomplish this goal. To dissent with Bush is to be anti-American. So be it. I dissented with Clinton. I dissented with Bush Senior. And I have suffered (personally suffered!) 6 years of rule by Bush Junior, and last time I took civics (back in ‘91), I distinctly remember that dissent was a very patriotic thing to do. If dissenting with your beloved Bush makes me Anti-American, then guess what? I don’t WANT to be American anymore.
I distrust your leader, CT, and frankly, I distrust you as well. And everything you and your leader say, I intend on disputing and distrusting.
June 29th, 2007 at 2:55 pmJohn Sacks needs to be dealt with on three levels:
First, John seems to believe that liberals are a bunch of losers that mooch off their rich conservative friends. The problem, John, is that the statistics show you to be wrong. The states with the greatest per capita income are blue states. They send more of their federal tax dollars to states that have higher poverty, less health insured people, greater unemployment, higher rates of teenaged and unmarried pregnancies/greater divorce rates. They also tend to have the worst school systems. These states are, by in large, red states. The actual facts tend to indicate that the Republican form of governmentprovide for the worst social outcomes. Some would say that this indicates that most Republicans are lazy, stupid, uneducated and lack moral fiber. Certainly, the Repbulican elite pushes the theory that if you do not get rich in this country it is because you are somehow lacking as an individual. Democrats tend to believe that it is indeed the failure of Republican party values and policies that cause this result.
Second, John believes that there are only islamo fascists. Sorry John, every religion breeds its extremists. The Romans had their feeding of the Christians to the lions. The Christians had their Inquisition. There has traditionally been hostility between Catholics and Protestants (try Ireland). We have seen the KKK based on Christian values and abortion clinic bombers. We should not condem all of Christianity based upon these examples. We should not attempt to condemn all Islam either. However, our very real enemies in the Islamic world hope that we think and express these views. They want to turn this into a vast clash of the west against the middle east. You oblige them with your ignorant reaction and therefore aid and abet their efforts.
Third, John does not understand how to deal with terrorism or assymmetrical warfare.
a. Our opponents look to make small, sharp attacks in order to provoke an over-reaction on our part. Thus, instead of dealing with Osama and Al Quaeda in Afghanistan: we split our forces and left the job undone. By attacking a country that was not involved in the 9/11 attack, we struck a pose as a threat in the region.
b. Our opponents depend upon our inability to understand the culture within which they exist and to exercise hubris in our response. We went to war in Iraq when our President did not really know the differences between the three major religious/ethnic groups in the country. The Right Wingers, like John, were so over confident as to believe that we could attack and watch as the adoring people threw flowers in our path. Yea, likely story. Our failure to anticipate the resulting insurrection, our failure to react to the general chaos in the days immediately after the “mission was accomplished” and our continuing failure to understand the nature of the insurrection guaranteed military failure.
c. John does not understand that the blind use of force will indeed be counter productive. It must be measured and selective. Imagine if we had decisively taken out the Taliban and Al Quaeda in Afghanistan. Imagine if we had followed that victory with a well-thought-out reconstruction program. We had enjoyed the support of the entire Islamic world after 9/11. Even Iran offered help We could suspect their sincerety but not the poliltical straight jacket that world opinion had placed them in. Then we could have turned our attention to Iraq and accomplished our goals with diplomatically and with a minimum of force.
I could go on. However, John’s thinking tends to be rigid, intellectually incurious and simplistic. I also sense one other problem with John that I have seen with many of the Chickenhawks.
