Al Gore writes in today’s NY Times.

Next Saturday’s Live Earth concerts on all seven continents around the globe “will ask for the attention of humankind to begin a three-year campaign to make everyone aware of how we can solve the climate crisis.” In conjunction with the concerts, individuals are being are being asked to make some commitments to reduce carbon emissions and to help “shape and drive government action.” Gore writes:

To this end, we should demand that the United States join an international treaty within the next two years that cuts global warming pollution by 90 percent in developed countries and by more than half worldwide in time for the next generation to inherit a healthy Earth. [...]

Our children have a right to hold us to a higher standard when their future — indeed, the future of all human civilization — is hanging in the balance. They deserve better than a government that censors the best scientific evidence and harasses honest scientists who try to warn us about looming catastrophe. They deserve better than politicians who sit on their hands and do nothing to confront the greatest challenge that humankind has ever faced — even as the danger bears down on us.

The Bush Administration is seeking to eliminate federal funding for geothermal energy research according to a report from Reuters.
The Department of Energy has not requested funds for geothermal research in our fiscal-year 2008 budget,” .
Geothermal energy produces NO Greenhouse Gasses. Estimates are that up to a THIRD of the energy used by American power plants could be supplied by Geothermal Energy.
    Pennywise and Pound foolish.

I’ll gladly concede that the whole “progressive” movement is a lost cause

    Comment by Vinnie — July 1, 2007 @ 2:37 am

    Vinaigrette-Judas,
That part of your message is THE ONLY FACT you have and you made it conditional by putting an “IF” at the end of that fact. You can’t change facts by including double entendre in your idiotic messages Judas. You never asked me if I had gone to protests you asked how I would go about creating a nationwide general strike to bolster the will of the people over our representative democracy. Can’t you read that progressives like you are worthless to any causes? Originally, I operated under the assumption that progressives would be the “get it done people” or the “make it happen people” but three or four weeks have opened my eyes to the truth that progressives suck. So, now I only point out the reality that your part of a movement alright, a bowl movement.

The reason my posts annoy the “hell” out of you (as you so coined) is due to several other facts that you forgot about. For starters you are an agent provocateur and that makes you the equivalent of a little boy who likes to torture puppies and kittens. After all you admitted your position several times since you are only here to fluck with me. Another reason that my posts annoy you is that they challenge your positions. One of your positions is that a carbon tax will help reduce global warming. Aside from the obvious problems with such a thing, money is no replacement for rationing except to feed the tank of your greed. It isn’t that I’m right and you’re wrong since the truth is money can never buy love or happiness.

Finally, what has you most perturbed about my presence here is when I explained to you an easy way to reduce carbon emissions. Let’s review this; you believe that the carbon atoms in the air come from the things that people do like operate cars. You believe that hybrid cars will help to reduce the amount of carbon atoms in the air. Now on the other hand I believe that population overshoot has out stepped the available resources to the population and no matter what you say or do our fate will be the same as that of the St. Matthew Island reindeer herd or the fate of the original settlers of Easter Island.

Compound population overshoot with something called “peak-everything” and the truth rings out like freedom. Too many people, applying too much demand, degrade and ultimately poison the systems that contain the excessive demand. As you attempt to spin that fact like an addict you suggest hyper efficiency cars and such but never address the underlying or root cause of all the problems: our physical existence here in the billions burning the energy of your offspring.

I believe that if you were honest you would completely rethink your stance and realize that there are only a few choices and frankly they all suck. We can’t “build” or “grow” our way out of resource depletion and we can’t sequester carbon while destroying oceans and cutting down trees. Henry Kissinger labeled us all as “Useless Eaters” and while I hate labels he is correct. Our lives have become meaningless and even silly and that should be of no surprise to anyone.

You wish to cut carbon through taxation. This sends shivers up and down my spine since I intuitively realize your purpose even though you may not. You don’t want to ration fossil fuel since you will have to do with less energy. Carbon taxation’s purpose is to foster something called “demand destruction” by hook or by crook the wealthy will increase the energy pool available to them while burdening everybody else with debt and diminishing expensive energy. Driving hybrids is not the same as conservation or cessation.

So, in the spirit of humanity if you sacrifice the lives of your family and yourself Vinnie, you would reduce emissions (only fractionally) and fractionally reduce resource demand thusly adding a fraction of a nanosecond to humanities TTL. As I stated on the thread you bookmarked you are looking for the best of both worlds Vinnie. You want to have your cake and eat it too. You want to continue to use oil and at the same time attempt to limit everyone else’s use of oil and make the determining factor $$$$MONEY$$$$. Not quantity based rationing and conservation leading to cessation but demand destruction via $$$$MONEY$$$$.

Now, go on and blow it out of your exhaust pipe since the GREEN you are about is $$$$$. All one needs to do is follow the money to realize that you are like I said an agent provocateur. You have been defending the oil companies, factories, corporations and the plutocrats the whole time and the sick truth is that you may not even realize it. You are part of a pyramid scheme and that isn’t all that progressive.

If you were sincere about pollution reduction you would want rationing and conservation leading to cessation. Since you are insincere, load your family and yourself in a car and drive off a cliff and GFY

LOL Funny… Though, Kerry/Edwards would have been much better than another 4 years with Edgar Bergen (Cheney) and his lap puppet :D

As of November 2006, when they would have gained a Democratic Congress, the Iraq Occupation would now be over, we’d be in the process of developing alternative fuels, and a National Health Care study group would have been factored into the budget along with relief for Katrina, education overhaul and a plan to reduce the deficit…

And imagine if it had been Gore in 2000… No occupation of Iraq at all! National Health Care would be being established and we’d not be indebted to China…

Gore says he’s not interested in running, that he’s fallen out of love with politics…. Too bad. He’s really the right person for the job…

I guess thos who sit here and squeal like stuck pigs over tax increases are obviously too ignorant to realize that they are the ones paying for the $630 Billion in tax cuts Bush engineered for the top 1 percent of Americans. Of course they dont realize it and can’t accept it because its one of those little secrets that the fair and balanced people at Faux Noise Network wont tell their faithful sheeple viewers. And we can be doubly assured, given the greater than $20 million that Rush Limbaugh makes for spewing lies, that their most favorite radio personality isn’t going to tell them either. If he did he’d stand to lose some of the tax breaks that trailer trash loyal Bushies are paying for while thinking they are safer with the chimp in office.

By the way, Gore/Edwards 08 has a great ring to it. Two southerners on the ticket is what we will need to take back the White House in 2008. Of course given the list of Repugnicans running for the office, I think we could run an Alfred E Newman/ Daffy Duck ticket in 2008 and we’ still beat the Repugnicans.

  24. m12 says:

You might want to look up your history, bob (not the intelligent).

It is Kennedy and Reagan that cut income tax rates to 28%. The Democrats in 1993 hiked this to 40%, and Americans gave them the boot a year later.

  25. Dean of Dissent, TP.org says:

    Comment by unbelievable

Of note, the 26% approval rating depicts those who aren’t satisfied with the President’s performance in general, not a more serious onus on the Republican party, indicated by Congress’ higher approval rating.

In other words, in no way does it mean that voters aren’t willing to vote another Republican president into office. Many Republican voters feel heavily that the President is hurting the Republican party.

Last week on a particularly sunny day, my son complained after a bicycle tour ( he is very agile and not overweight)

“Mommy I can hardly breathe and I have a headache”

What is my answer supposed to be?

“Sorry, dear. But to cut all this ozone in the atmosphere and stop global warming, daddy would have to pay way more taxes. So pull yourself together it wouldn’t be worth it.”?

And, while we’re at it. Where is all the money that Mr Bush squandered supposed to come from to cover the budget deficit the US has run up?

Shall I give my son the message. “Hey and while we’re at it, one of these days you will have to pay up for our debt, so daddy and me can drive posh cars and leave the air conditioning at 22°C.”?

I love my son and I want him to live in a peaceful, healthy environment. And I love him and his brother (my husband, too) more than enough to be prepared to sacrifice some comfort for their benefit.

The Tax Act of 1997, which came AFTER 1993, by the way, created more loopholes for the upper tax bracket essentially lowering their portion of taxes through hidden means.

Not everything is blatantly obvious. Some times you have to read the fine print.

“On August 5, 1997, President Clinton signed the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 and the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 into law. Heralded by the politicians in Washington as landmark legislation, these two laws are supposed to balance the federal budget by 2002 and cut taxes by about $95 billion over a five-year period. If a balanced budget is achieved, it will be the first time since 1969. The new legislation cuts federal spending by about $260 billion over five years, with $115 billion of that coming from lower Medicare reimbursement to hospitals and doctors.

Individuals will get a variety of new tax breaks. The law provides a tax credit for children under 17, creates college tuition tax credits and education IRAs, and allows penalty-free withdrawals from individual retirement accounts for qualified education expenses and first home purchases. Capital gains taxes are cut, and the rules for taxing home sales are completely revised. Fewer estates will be subject to taxes, and special estate tax breaks are provided for qualifying small businesses and family farms.”

Considering that you used the words “uppermost tax bracket” and the income tax is the only federal tax that has an uppermost bracket (or a rate of 35%), it would be kind of difficult to assume you were speaking of anything else.

“Almost half the tax cuts provided by the legislation will go to the best-off 5 percent of taxpayers. In contrast, taxpayers in the lowest 40% of the income scale will get nothing. ”

And? The top 5% pays half of federal income taxes, and the bottom 40% pays essentially zilch. Tough to get a tax cut when you pay $0 in taxes!

Personal Income Taxes are now used to pay down the Federal Reserve interest. PIT were a result of WW1 and were not collected till WW2. From 1776 till 1913 there were no personal income tax laws or personal income taxes. Tax laws were created but not used till 1939 so no personal income taxes were collected by an organization that never existed called the IRS between 1776 and 1939 give or take. More than that the Federal Government charged the Federal Reserve with the task of dealing with our money in the 1900s (can’t remember the exact year) and what can be said is that this is the first “outsourcing” and is unconstitutional.

The 16th Amendment should have been repealed after the war it was intended to fund but instead the plutocrats saw it for the gravy train it was and that remains our situation till this day. Takes are deliberately made to be difficult to understand and come at us from all directions. You want to make a big point about something? Want to show everyone how clever you are? Use fancy words to try to prove you are all that and then some. Here I will show you how it is done. First you should know how to spell the word you are about to use in your pontification and it is a good idea to make sure that you correctly spell your central word!

Here you used the spelling MONATERISM and that happens to be a non-word since it is not in a dictionary or in a commonly found tool on a computer called a spell checker.
My best guess is that you mean MONETARISM? Or did you mean “Al Gore”?

    MONETARISM is defined as:
(NOUN) an economic theory holding that variations in unemployment and the rate of inflation are usually caused by changes in the supply of money…

So if you mean MONETARISM you will see that it is a noun and nouns are “things”. Demand destruction is a pair of words. The word demand in this case refers to goods, services and/or resources that an individual or group desires. Demand is one of the basic concepts of “economics.” Destruction in this case is the elimination of demand by raising prices beyond one’s ability to pay or by literally destroying customers with bombs, guns, etc.

Now if money were based on the gold standard you could have a point. Oil is energy and energy gets things done. Our money is not tied to gold but is now linked to a depleting resource called oil. Even if I never find more gold I can never deplete the gold unless I shoot it into space for some reason. Oil is burned to “do work” and then it is gone. Now you stated that MONETARISM is a “philosophy” and that is not true since it is in fact considered a “theory” of economics. Preachers and conservatives have nothing to do with economic theories.

Please explain yourself and do include examples so we can have open discourse about your claim. Also you may want to look at my other post about income taxes posted on this thread? Thank you!

Reagan’s economic policy changed in 1984, away from Reagenomics towards a more moderate path. He in fact, figured out that he was wrong, and changed policies.

He didn’t change policies at all. In 1986, Reagan passed the second of his critical tax reform acts, cutting top rates to 28%.

In 1986 the chief thing which saved America’s economy was a sharp fall in fuel prices. While taxes, are not the huge expense the rightwing makes out (You have to be making a profit to pay them) fuel impacts every portion of the economy – the price goes down, economic strength improves.

Note what really hurt Carter: Ford’s fuel crisis. What really helped Reagan? The fuel crisis ending.

Carter might have inherited a fuel crisis, but he made it worse, as the price of oil jumped from $14 to $35, its alltime high.

Contrary to the eternal optimist Vinnie and others like him there is no way to escape the fate of the dwellers of Easter Island or the reindeer of St. Matthews Island unless everyone picks up a gun or stick and starts killing everyone they see. Billions will need to go. The hybrid drivers are over confident and their cars and piles of money will not stop the beating the poor will give them. Odds are people like Vinnie will be found in cold soup and sliced into sandwiches by the hordes of starving poor people. Survival of the fittest is cool but survival of the most well armed largest group of group thinkers is better. “So, Join the ARMY!”

I may not agree with freedomrings, but he is at least making cogent points without attacking someone else just because they disagree.

Without mentioning names; if you criticize someone for resorting to name-calling, it undermines your argument to then call that person a name. Many posters veer away from the topic under discussion to score their partisan points. Maybe that makes YOU feel good, but you add nothing to the discussion, and nothing of any substance for someone like me to evaluate your true position.
You can say Clinton was worse or Reagan was worse, but the facts in support or opposition are, sadly, just minutiae to help make your point.
Reagan dismantled social programs, borrowed a ton of money (deficit spending) to spend on batshite crazy star wars programs,
and began the neo-con revolution. But he lowered taxes.
Clinton brought us peace, prosperity, and a balanced budget.
But, he also brought us NAFTA (a disasta) draconian anti-drug policies, and a worse environment.
Both guys did some good things. Both did the U.S. a disservice.
The thread is about Al Gore.
    Here’s my take.
I think global warming is partially man-made. The scientists believe that man is responsible for 90% of the warming since 1950.
I agree that we should do all we can to fund and encourage sustainable, and pollution free energy. Personally, I believe pollution is the biggest problem, and global warming is increasing as a result of some of that pollution.
I do not support the corporate carbon tax solution, because it allows some to pollute, while seeking to balance this with non-polluters. This carbon tax scheme seems to be some kind of subterfuge to let primary bad actors continue with their bad acts.
Comments? Other points of view are welcome. If you call me a name it’s because you have nothing else to go with. How sad for you.

Way bakc in that dark little mind of yours, you have had an idea for awhile, now, haven’t you? Nobody is there for you and nobody listens to you when you know, if they did, they would see you as the true revolutionary they have been waiting for.
But the world can’t accept you now, and so you sit there alone in that dark place, for days and weeks on end.
I tell you this; it’s not going to get any better. The people aren’t going to listen and see your greatness.
So that idea that you have, in the back of your little mind, is the best idea for you.
You are truely alone and sad and your life will never be any better than it is right now. There are those who are better off leaving this place. They are broken and have no chance of redemption.
That little voice in the back of your dark mind, is correct. You have thought about it. So you should, in fact, act upon it. While you still can make some decisions for yourself.

Since this thread is so wide ranging, I’ll mention this from the BBC about Uganda’s plastic bag crisis. It seems that everything purchased in Uganda comes in a plastic bag. Ugandans reuse these plastic bags for everthing…milk…food…gasoline…and most troubling… for toilets. Apparently sewage treatment is in short supply in Uganda….because the people relieve themselves in plastic bags, tie a knot, and give them a toss. Flying Latrines is what they call them.
This is a serious problem because the plastic bags don’t decompose, get buried, and make the soil unviable…nothing grows.
Millions of these bags enter the country courtesy of Globalization.

I’m not sure that it was after that Al Gore claimed that he invented the internet even though that was not true. It always struck me as comical that Al Gore debated the musical legend Frank Zappa in a government hearing. Now he is pushing a carbon tax and here we must suspend disbelief since there is no way I’m going to feel guilty about burning oil. Don’t call the cops if their isn’t a crime.

    But I digress,

If you are going to claim that you support the war, well the war effort needs you. Join the army, volunteer to go to the front because soldiers right now are having their tours of duty extended because there are not enough of them. If you support the war you should put your money where your mouth is, and go join the war.

And if you support the troops, you should be standing up for veterans benefits. You should be seeing to it, that the budget for veterans benefits remains top class, if you say you support the troops, you should actually support the troops. Yet, it is often the antiwar crowd, the liberals who you Republicans claim hate the troops, who are most vocal in support of veterans benefits.

The Republican response I have seen on these boards, to veterans benefits when soldiers have had their limbs blown off, has been “They volunteered, no skin off my nose.”

If you really support America, support America, read your constitution and make it your personal mission to defend that wonderful document. You don’t have to be a lawyer, you just have to understand that that document was a line in the sand drawn to judge what government can, and cannot do.

Hold your officials accountable, don’t accept that “Clinton did it to.” If it is wrong it is wrong, whoever did it first. If you don’t trust either party to not abuse their power vote for an independent. If you can’t find an independent you trust? Stand for election yourself.

  304. shane says:

Actually, investment bankers rarely take anybody who doesn’t come from the Harvards, Dukes, Yales, Browns, etc. It’s not bias on community colleges, and as I’ve said before, people can use their community colleges to advance to those schools and land those jobs if they desire. You’re being an all-or-nothing bigot where there’s no justification. You wouldn’t be telling me that if I was a progressive commentator.

Comment by Dean of Dissent, TP.org

FYI, they also throw out the resumes of people who took a year off before they started at those colleges to find themselves. Same at prestigious law firms. Believe it or not, to get the best jobs take fierced determination.

  305. shane says:

That’s a talking point, sir, not a sound rebuttal.

    Comment by Dean of Dissent

Oh it’s an extremely sound rebuttal. But that’s all you can come up with? Go join up soldier.

No you shut up diaper boy. I’m sure many people here don’t feel that 53 is as old as you say or that 20 is as young as you feel. So you STFU.

Not to be disagreeable with someone whose posts I enjoy, but I personally do not equate “the best jobs” with the ones that pay more. Sometimes you have to give up part of your soul to get the kind of money that motivates some people.

Oh I’m with you Wayne. That’s why I left the coporate world and tended bar for 15 years and hung out with my friends all day. I can’t believe they paid me to do that. But to the neocon nazis the only thing they will understand is the bottom line, unless they’re excusing their own lack of success.

    Comment by shane

LOL. I think I’ve contributed, and I think I’ve held a number of jobs already. Why do you feel so confident in your filthy projections? Really, why? I started working earlier than you, by the way.

People need their booze and Stalinist talking points, so keep contributing to great ol’ America. Actually, the times change, and options to succeed become more diversified. Your viewpoints are essentially nullified, they don’t count, so keep talking to the wall.
Again, you’re not one to consult on Social skills. I mean, you’re a bartender. Geez….what don’t you get?

Everything to you is ‘name brand.’ I choose not to fall for it, so you’re the one at a disadvantage here. Ever watch the CBS documentary debunking the myth that students can easily get big-time jobs because they attended a name-brand school. Never mind, you’re brain dead.

    A bartender……..please.

Typical righty, knows nothing of what was going on.

Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11. Even GW Bush, your personal god of vengeance, says so. Saddam was opposed to Osama Bin Laden, and though he was a nasty man, and indeed held views in opposition to America, he was not an immediate threat.

Osama Bin Laden, who had killed over 3000 Americans, was allowed to escape in order for America to invade Iraq. Afghanistan, a justified war, was allowed to degenerate to the point where Pakistan’s government is now faced with the taliban spreading its influence within their borders, and Afghanistan itself is now the world’s biggest poppy growing country.

Those WMDs, weren’t there. Those terrorist links, weren’t there. Indeed the best evidence released so far reveals a evil monster of a man in Saddam, who was nonetheless opposed to Osama Bin Laden. You trollls, you do merge into one after a while. When you can’t argue the facts, bring out the BS, and never mind the results of what your government did.

Nope, 20 is pretty young. In your case, 53 is probably more 83.

    Comment by Wayne A. Schneider — July 1, 2007 @ 2:13 pm

Whatever. Whatever. Whatever. Whatever. Whatever. You made this big post about how invent and create are words to hang me by. You go on to mention your command of language and mad not one, not two, not three but in fact four spelling errors. More than that there were grammatical errors too but you brought that up in another petty assed post. The point is your petty and what difference does it make if Gore said created or invented? Look at those words and then you point out that Gore chose CREATED. Wow, that is God stuff there WaynO. So your point was that you wanted to defend Al Gore and you thought it was disingenuous of me to bash him for,”inventing the internet” when he in fact took responsibility for, “creating the internet.” So spelling errors aside your point is rather petty and even silly since you know that Al said something that was self serving and that was my point in bringing it up. GFarpY

No strawman there. Where is the straw man?

You could argue ad-hominem, which would make you a total hypocrit given your own response to my arguments, not that the straw man claim is any better given you accusing me of supporting the Democrats, after a post where I stated that if you don’t trust either party you should vote independent.

  329. Bruce Gorton says:

  330. Emerald says:

Please, freedomrings doesn’t represent Nebraskans or anything related to the state other than the unfortunate majority of regressive thinkers.

Nebraska is a magnificent state, despite the right-wing idiots who dominate our political scene. There are progressive thinkers here, and we battle honorably and continually to bring our political dialog up to the 21st Century.

This thread took several odd turns; it originally dealt with Gore’s call to Americans to take the lead on the issue of global warming…and his principled campaign to inform, educate and motivate us to act is worthy of reasoned debate. But until the anti-intellectual movement in this country is forced to retreat, we will continue to see this issue trivialized.

Is it any wonder that the nations of the world mock the United States?

I’ll bet freedomrings was banned over at redstate.com. I don’t think anybody, left or right, could stand this guy’s ranting for very long. He is the definition of annoying troll.

What’s said is that he is actually proud of himself for bringing down the level of this message board. The good thing is that anyone with half a brain can tell who the jackass is (the right wing troll) and who the decent people are (most of the progressive thinkers that post here). Trolls, you’re doing a horrible job representing the 28%’ers.

  336. lonesomerobot says:

Al Gore didn’t “create” the Internet, but I sure as hell remember watching him campaign for VP the first time around, and seeing him speak strongly in support for the “Information Superhighway.” He was out stumping for the technology before the vast majority of Americans, or American Politicians were in support, or even knew what the concept entailed.

Bottom line, Gore was ahead of the curve on the potentials of the system, and he did have an impact on its development on the Internet.

Even more compelling, his glorious life was the inspiration for the book “Love story.” So there’s that.
