Candidate to replace Iglesias pushed for his ouster.
Patrick Rogers, a former general counsel to the New Mexico Republican Party and a candidate to replace fired New Mexico U.S. Attorney David Iglesias, “pressured” Iglesias “several times to bring voter fraud prosecutions where little evidence existed” before the 2006 mid-term elections. Rogers, who was secretary of the nonprofit American Center for Voting Rights Legislative Fund at the time, was, according to Iglesias, “obsessed . . . convinced there was massive voter fraud going on in this state, and I needed to do something to stop it.”

Its Web domain name has suddenly expired, its reports are all gone (except where they have been preserved by its opponents), and its general counsel, Mark “Thor” Hearne, has cleansed his résumé of affiliation with the group. Hearne won’t speak to the press about ACVR’s demise.

Evidence was accumulating that the issue of voter fraud had been pushed by the GOP in an effort to mask voter suppression. Much of the evidence has emerged in media reports and congressional hearings into the firings of U.S. attorneys in at least eight cities in 2006, which “led to allegations that Republican officials pressed some of the fired prosecutors to bring voter fraud cases in hard-fought races.”
For example, Bradley Schlozman, the interim U.S. attorney in Kansas City, brought a controversial set of indictments for voter-registration fraud several days before the 2006 election in Missouri. The cases appeared to flout DoJ policy, which discouraged election-related indictments too close to Election Day. Schlozman told the Senate judiciary committee that he acted at the “direction” of the DoJ’s Public Integrity Section, testimony he later recanted.

Katie, great link! Thom Hartmann is fantastic. I could only dream of writing as well as he does. He explains things in such easy-to-see terms, that it’s a wonder more people don’t see the folly of attempting to govern a nation through conservative philosophy.
When will people learn that the reason conservatives cannot effectively govern is that they don’t believe in government? They feel that the problem with America is its government, and then they run to be a part of it. But they don’t understand what its function is supposed to be. They don’t understand why laws were passed to prevent people from doing some of the very things these people want to do, but that our society has decided should not be done. Hell, I would surmise that they would love to see murder legalized, since that would present a quicker solution to the problems they faced with their naysayers. And a good many of their “leadership” (conservatives) have publicly made statements to the effect that we’re lucky murder is illegal.
And they think they should be in charge? They think so much that they should be in charge, that they are willing to steal the votes of the people they claim to want to represent, so they can knowingly pursue an agenda their constituents would oppose (hence, the reason they would have lost). And they rationalize this to themselves by saying that they are “acting in the best interests of the nation.” They think that they are restoring democracy by destroying democracy.

Voter fraud–where dead people are voting, people are voting multiple times, etc.–has been shown to be minimal. What the Republican Party and these operative organizations have been doing is organized election fraud–an ongoing effort to change the outcome of elections through caging, restrictive registration and ID requirements, partisan corporate ownership of voting machine software, misinformation, and legal intimidation.
All the Republican members of the judiciary committees are singing “la, la, la, nothing to see here, go away.” High time for an independent prosecutor.
We need somebody to make this clear.
